Measurements in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV of jet correlations for a trigger hadron at intermediate transverse momentum (p(T,trig)) with associated mesons or baryons at lower p(T,assoc) indicate strong modification of the away-side jet. The ratio of jet-associated baryons to mesons increases with centrality and p(T,assoc). For the most central collisions, the ratio is similar to that for inclusive measurements. This trend is incompatible with in-vacuum fragmentation but could be due to jetlike contributions from correlated soft partons, which recombine upon hadronization.

The classical model of capillary equilibrium in cylindrical pores is modified here by the introduction of molecular concepts and the solid fluid interaction potential. The new approach accurately predicts capillary coexistence and criticality, with results quantitatively matching those from density functional theory for nitrogen adsorption, while also predicting condensation pressures in agreement with reported experimental findings for MCM-41. The larger critical pore size for nitrogen adsorption in these materials, however, suggests a modification of the potential function parameters, evaluated here from data for hydroxylated silica.

We modified the noninvasive, in vivo technique for strain application in the tibiae of rats (Turner et al,, Bone 12:73-79, 1991), The original model applies four-point bending to right tibiae via an open-loop, stepper-motor-driven spring linkage, Depending on the magnitude of applied load, the model produces new bone formation at periosteal (Ps) or endocortical surfaces (Ec.S). Due to the spring linkage, however, the range of frequencies at which loads can be applied is limited. The modified system replaces this design with an electromagnetic vibrator. A load transducer in series with the loading points allows calibration, the loaders' position to be adjusted, and cyclic loading completed under load central as a closed servo-loop. Two experiments were conducted to validate the modified system: (1) a strain gauge was applied to the lateral surface of the right tibia of 5 adult female rats and strains measured at applied loads from 10 to 60 N; and (2) the bone formation response was determined in 28 adult female Sprague-Dawley rats. Loading was applied as a haversine wave with a frequency of 2 Hz for 18 sec, every second day for 10 days. Peak bending loads mere applied at 33, 40, 52, and 64 N, and a sham-loading group tr as included at 64 N, Strains in the tibiae were linear between 10 and 60 N, and the average peak strain at the Ps.S at 60 N was 2664 +/- 250 microstrain, consistent with the results of Turner's group. Lamellar bone formation was stimulated at the Ec.S by applied bending, but not by sham loading. Bending strains above a loading threshold of 40 N increased Ec Lamellar hone formation rate, bone forming surface, and mineral apposition rate with a dose response similar to that reported by Turner et al, (J Bone Miner Res 9:87-97, 1994). We conclude that the modified loading system offers precision for applied loads of between 0 and 70 N, versatility in the selection of loading rates up to 20 Hz, and a reproducible bone formation response in the rat tibia, Adjustment of the loader also enables study of mechanical usage in murine tibia, an advantage with respect to the increasing variety of transgenic strains available in bone and mineral research. Techniques and mechanism of doping controlled amounts of various cations into pillared clays without causing precipitation or damages to the pillared layered structures are reviewed and discussed. Transition metals of great interest in catalysis can be doped in the micropores of pillared clay in ionic forms by a two-step process. The micropore structures and surface nature of pillared clays are altered by the introduced cations, and this results in a significant improvement in adsorption properties of the clays. Adsorption of water, air components and organic vapors on cation-doped pillared clays were studied. The effects of the amount and species of cations on the pore structure and adsorption behavior are discussed. It is demonstrated that the presence of doped Ca2+ ions can effectively aides the control of modification of the pillared clays of large pore openings. Controlled cation doping is a simple and powerful tool for improving the adsorption properties of pillared clay.

A two-step method of loading controlled amounts of transition metal cations into alumina pillared clays (Al-PILCs) is proposed. First, calcined Al-PILC was dispersed into an aqueous solution of sodium or ammonium ions. Increasing the pH of the dispersion resulted in an increase in the amount of cations loaded into the clay. The ion-doped Al-PILC was then exchanged with an aqueous solution of transition metal salt at a pH of similar to 4.5 to replace Na+ or NH4+ ions by transition metal cations. Analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance-ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, as well as N-2 adsorption were used to characterize the PILC products with and without the loading of metal ions. The introduced transition metal species exist in the forms of hydrated ions in the PILC hosts. The content of transition metal ions in the final product increased with the amount of Na+ or NH4+ loaded in the first step so that by controlling the pH of the dispersion in the first step, one can control the doping amounts of transition metal cations into Al-PILCs. A sample containing 0.125 mmol/g of nickel was thus obtained, which is similar to 3 times of that obtained by directly exchanging Al-PILC with Ni(NO3)(2) solution, while the pillared layered structures of the Al-PILC remained. The porosity analysis using N-2 adsorption data indicated that most of the doped transition metal ions dispersed homogeneously in the micropores of the Al-PILC, significantly affecting the micropore structure.

We used the startle eyeblink modification paradigm to investigate whether clinically anxious children, like high trait-anxious adults, display a bias in favour of threat words compared to neutral words. The present study included 16 clinically anxious children whose diagnostic status was determined using the parent version of a semistructured diagnostic interview as part of a larger childhood anxiety study. The children were presented with threat and neutral words fur 6 s each. A startle-eliciting auditory stimulus - a 100 dBA burst of white noise of 50 ms duration - was presented during the words at lead intervals of 60, 120, 240, or 3500 ms and during intertrial intervals. The overall pattern of startle eyeblink modification indicated inhibition at the 120 and 240 ms lead intervals and facilitation at the 3500 ms lead interval. startle-latency shortening during threat words at the :60 ms lead interval was larger than at other intervals, whereas there was no difference during neutral words. This result reflects an anxiety-related bias in favour of threat words occurring at a very early - and possibly preattentive stage - of information processing.

A series of aluminum-10 wt pet silicon castings were produced in sand molds to investigate the effect of modification on porosity formation. Modification with individual additions of either strontium or sodium resulted in a statistically significant increase in the level of porosity compared to unmodified castings. The increase in porosity with modification is due to the presence of numerous dispersed pores, which were absent in the unmodified casting. It is proposed that these pores form as a result of differences in size of the aluminum-silicon eutectic grains between unmodified and modified alloys. A geometric model is developed to show how the size of eutectic grains can influence the amount and distribution of porosity. Unlike traditional feeding-based models, which incorporate the effect: of microstructure on permeability, this model considers what happens when liquid is isolated from the riser and can no longer flow. This simple isolation model complements rather than contradicts existing theories on modification-related porosity formation and should be considered in the development of future comprehensive models.

Recent increasing applications for cast Al-Si alloys are particularly driven by the need for lightweighting components in the automotive sector. To improve mechanical properties, elements such as strontium, sodium and antimony can be added to modify the eutectic silicon from coarse and plate-like to fine and fibrous morphology. It is only recently being noticed that the morphological transformation resulting from eutectic modification is also accompanied by other, equally significant, but often unexpected changes. These changes can include a 10-fold increase in the eutectic grain size, redistribution of low-melting point phases and porosity as well as surface finish, consequently leading to variations in casting quality. This paper shows the state-of-the-art in understanding the mechanism of eutectic nucleation and growth in Al-Si alloys, inspecting samples, both quenched and uninterrupted, on the macro, micro and nano-scale. It shows that significant variations in eutectic nucleation and growth dynamics occur in AI-Si alloys as a function of the type and amount of modifier elements added. Titania sol-pillared clay (TiO2 PILC) and silica-titania sol-pillared clay (SiO2-TiO2 PILC) were synthesized by the sol-gel method. Supercritical drying (SCD) and treatment with quaternary ammonium surfactants were used to tailor the pore structure of the resulting clay. It was found that SCD approach increased the external surface area of the PILCs dramatically and that treatment with surfactants could be used to tailor pore size because the mesopore formation in the galleries between the clay layers follows the templating mechanism as observed in the synthesis of MCM-41 materials. Highly mesoporous solids were thus obtained. In calcined TiO2 PILC, ultrafine crystallites in anatase phase, which are active for photocatalytic oxidation of organics, were observed. In SiO2-TiO2 PILCs and their derivatives, titanium was highly dispersed in the matrix of silica and no crystal phase was observed. The highly dispersed titanium sites are good catalytic centers for selective oxidation of organic compounds. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

Estimates of Wolbachia density in the eggs, testes and whole flies of drosophilid hosts have been unable to predict the lack of cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) expression in so-called mod(-) variants. Consequently, the working hypothesis has been that CI expression, although related to Wolbachia density, is also governed by unknown factors that are influenced by both host and bacterial genomes. Here, we compare the behaviour of the mod(-) over-replicating Wolbachia popcorn strain in its native Drosophila melanogaster host to the same strain transinfected into a novel host, namely Drosophila simulans. We report that (i) the popcorn strain is a close relative of other D. melanogaster infections, (ii) the mod(-) status of popcorn in D. melanogaster appears to result from its inability to colonize sperm bundles, (iii) popcorn is present in the bundles in D. simulans and induces strong CI expression, which demonstrates that the bacterial strain does not lack the genetic machinery for inducing CI and that there is host-species-specific control over Wolbachia tissue tropism, and (iv) infection of sperm bundles by the mod(-) D. simulans wCof strain indicates that there are several independent routes by which a strain can be a CI non-expressor.

A repetitive DNA motif was used as a marker to identify novel genes in the mucosal pathogen Moraxella catarrhalis. There is a high prevalence of such repetitive motifs in virulence genes that display phase variable expression. Two repeat containing loci were identified using a digoxigenin-labelled 5'-(CAAC)(6)-3' oligonucleotide probe. The repeats are located in the methylase components of two distinct type III restriction-modification (R-M) systems. We suggest that the phase variable nature of these R-M systems indicates that they have an important role in the biology of M. catarrhalis.
