Let X be an infinite-dimensional complex Banach space. Very recently, several results on the existence of entire functions on X bounded on a given ball B1 X and unbounded on another given ball B2 X have been obtained. In this paper we consider the problem of finding entire functions which are uniformly bounded on a collection of balls and unbounded on the balls of some other collection. RESUMEN. Sea X un espacio de Banach complejo de dimensión infinita. En este trabajo, los autores estudian el problema de encontrar una función entera en X que esté uniformemente acotada en una colección de de bolas en X y que no esté acotada en las bolas de otra colección.

Complete resolution of the amide resonances in a three-dimensional solid-state NMR correlation spectrum of a uniformly 15N-labeled membrane protein in oriented phospholipid bilayers is demonstrated. The three orientationally dependent frequencies, 1H chemical shift, 1H–15N dipolar coupling, and 15N chemical shift, associated with each amide resonance are responsible for resolution among resonances and provide sufficient angular restrictions for protein structure determination. Because the protein is completely immobilized by the phospholipids on the relevant NMR time scales (10 kHz), the linewidths will not degrade in the spectra of larger proteins. Therefore, these results demonstrate that solid-state NMR experiments can overcome the correlation time problem and extend the range of proteins that can have their structures determined by NMR spectroscopy to include uniformly 15N-labeled membrane proteins in phospholipid bilayers.

Eukaryotic chromosome replication is initiated from numerous origins and its activation is temporally controlled by cell cycle and checkpoint mechanisms. Yeast has been very useful in defining the genetic elements required for initiation of DNA replication, but simple and precise tools to monitor S phase progression are lacking in this model organism. Here we describe a TK+ yeast strain and conditions that allow incorporation of exogenous BrdU into genomic DNA, along with protocols to detect the sites of DNA synthesis in yeast nuclei or on combed DNA molecules. S phase progression is monitored by quantification of BrdU in total yeast DNA or on individual chromosomes. Using these tools we show that yeast chromosomes replicate synchronously and that DNA synthesis occurs at discrete subnuclear foci. Analysis of BrdU signals along single DNA molecules from hydroxyurea-arrested cells reveals that replication forks stall 8–9 kb from origins that are placed 46 kb apart on average. Quantification of total BrdU incorporation suggests that 190 ‘early’ origins have fired in these cells and that late replicating territories might represent up to 40% of the yeast genome. More generally, the methods outlined here will help understand the kinetics of DNA replication in wild-type yeast and refine the phenotypes of several mutants.

Maternally encoded RNAs and proteins program the early development of all animals. A subset of the maternal transcripts is eliminated from the embryo before the midblastula transition. In certain cases, transcripts are protected from degradation in a subregion of the embryonic cytoplasm, thus resulting in transcript localization. Maternal factors are sufficient for both the degradation and protection components of transcript localization. Cis-acting elements in the RNAs convert transcripts progressively (i) from inherently stable to unstable and (ii) from uniformly degraded to locally protected. Similar mechanisms are likely to act later in development to restrict certain classes of transcripts to particular cell types within somatic cell lineages. Functions of transcript degradation and protection are discussed.

Early metazoan development is programmed by maternal mRNAs inherited by the egg at the time of fertilization. These mRNAs are not translated en masse at any one time or at any one place, but instead their expression is regulated both temporally and spatially. Recent evidence has shown that one maternal mRNA, cyclin B1, is concentrated on mitotic spindles in the early Xenopus embryo, where its translation is controlled by CPEB (cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein), a sequence-specific RNA binding protein. Disruption of the spindle-associated translation of this mRNA results in a morphologically abnormal mitotic apparatus and inhibited cell division. Mammalian neurons, particularly in the synapto-dendritic compartment, also contain localized mRNAs such as that encoding α-CaMKII. Here, synaptic activation drives local translation, an event that is involved in synaptic plasticity and possibly long-term memory storage. Synaptic translation of α-CaMKII mRNA also appears to be controlled by CPEB, which is enriched in the postsynaptic density. Therefore, CPEB-controlled local translation may influence such seemingly disparate processes as the cell cycle and synaptic plasticity.

A procedure for the enzymatic synthesis of uniformly 13C15N-labeled DNA oligonucleotides in milligram quantities for NMR studies is described. Deoxynucleotides obtained from microorganisms grown on 13C and 15N nutrient sources are enzymatically phosphorylated to dNTPs, and the dNTPs are incorporated into oligonucleotides using a 3'-5' exonuclease-deficient mutant of Klenow fragment of DNA polymerase I and an oligonucleotide template primer designed for efficient separation of labeled product DNA from unlabeled template. The labeling strategy has been used to uniformly label one or the other oligonucleotide strand in the DNA duplex dGGCAAAACGG.dCCGTTTTGCC in order to facilitate assignment and structure determination by NMR. Application of 15N and 13C heteronuclear NMR experiments to isotopically labeled DNA is presented.

In the context of real-valued functions defined on metric spaces, it is known that the locally Lipschitz functions are uniformly dense in the continuous functions and that the Lipschitz in the small functions - the locally Lipschitz functions where both the local Lipschitz constant and the size of the neighborhood can be chosen independent of the point - are uniformly dense in the uniformly continuous functions. Between these two basic classes of continuous functions lies the class of Cauchy continuous functions, i.e., the functions that map Cauchy sequences in the domain to Cauchy sequences in the target space. Here, we exhibit an intermediate class of Cauchy continuous locally Lipschitz functions that is uniformly dense in the real-valued Cauchy continuous functions. In fact, our result is valid when our target space is an arbitrary Banach space.

In the first part of this work, we show how certain techniques from quantum information theory can be used in order to obtain very sharp embeddings between noncommutative Lp-spaces. Then, we use these estimates to study the classical capacity with restricted assisted entanglement of the quantum erasure channel and the quantum depolarizing channel. In particular, we exactly compute the capacity of the first one and we show that certain nonmultiplicative results hold for the second one.

This study explores the relationship between conformity to traditional feminine gender norms and meaning and purpose in life among female college students. Based on previous research findings that show a negative correlation between specific traditional feminine gender norm conformity factors and psychological well-being, we posited that participants with higher levels of traditional gender norm conformity will experience a lower sense of meaning and purpose in life. Self-report data was obtained from 338 female undergraduate college students using the Conformity to Feminine Norms Inventory (CFNI) and the Purpose in Life Test (PIL). A standard multiple regression assessed the accuracy of eight feminine norms in predicting purpose and meaning in life. Results partially supported the hypothesis, with Modesty as the most significant contributor to meaning and purpose. Inconsistent with our hypothesis, participants who endorsed high scores on Nice in Relationships, Involvement with Children, Sexual Fidelity, and Domestic, scored higher on the PIL.

We report electrical conductance measurements of Bi nanocontacts created by repeated tip-surface indentation using a scanning tunneling microscope at temperatures of 4 and 300 K. As a function of the elongation of the nanocontact, we measure robust, tens of nanometers long plateaus of conductance G0=2e2/h at room temperature. This observation can be accounted for by the mechanical exfoliation of a Bi(111) bilayer, a predicted quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator, in the retracing process following a tip-surface contact. The formation of the bilayer is further supported by the additional observation of conductance steps below G0 before breakup at both temperatures. Our finding provides the first experimental evidence of the possibility of mechanical exfoliation of Bi bilayers, the existence of the QSH phase in a two-dimensional crystal, and, most importantly, the observation of the QSH phase at room temperature.

In t-norm based systems many-valued logic, valuations of propositions form a non-countable set: interval [0,1]. In addition, we are given a set E of truth values p, subject to certain conditions, the valuation v is v=V(p), V reciprocal application of E on [0,1]. The general propositional algebra of t-norm based many-valued logic is then constructed from seven axioms. It contains classical logic (not many-valued) as a special case. It is first applied to the case where E=[0,1] and V is the identity. The result is a t-norm based many-valued logic in which contradiction can have a nonzero degree of truth but cannot be true; for this reason, this logic is called quasi-paraconsistent.

From previous experiments, it was evident that the accumulation of zinc in maturing wheat grains is highly regulated, but the regulatory mechanisms involved are not yet identified. In this study, we determined the transfer of radiolabelled zinc (fed directly into a leaf flap) from the flag leaf lamina to the grains. We also determined how this zinc transfer was affected by feeding additional unlabeled zinc (1 μmol per plant) either into the flag leaf sheath or the peduncle. Most of the 65Zn was retained in the feeding flap. A high percentage of the zinc exported from the flap accumulated in the grains with little accumulation of radiolabel in the other parts of the shoot. Unlabeled zinc remained mainly in the feeding flap and in the parts reached by the transpiration stream from the feeding position. The transfer of radiolabelled zinc was essentially not influenced by unlabeled zinc fed into another plant part. Our results suggest that the loading of zinc into the phloem and the mass flow in the sieve tubes might regulate zinc redistribution within the wheat shoot.
