Fontes para pensar a trajetória de um intelectual brasileiro Alceu Amoroso Lima

O estágio da pesquisa ora em andamento tem como foco principal apresentar e discutir dois conjuntos de fontes utilizados como auxiliares no estudo, em particular, da trajetória do pensador católico brasileiro Alceu Amoroso Lima, e também dos intelectuais que faziam parte do seu grupo. Os conjuntos são: uma seleção de obras de pensadores dos séculos XVIII-XIX (Edmund Burke, Louis-Ambroise De Bonald, Joseph De Maistre e Juan Donoso Cortés); a revista A Ordem, publicação de orientação católica criada nos anos 20 e que era o principal meio de expressão da intelectualidade católica laica. Certamente, o primeiro conjunto de fontes nos fornece elementos para pensar a produção de artigos de intelectuais católicos publicados na revista A Ordem, no Brasil dos anos 1930 e 1940, e particularmente por Alceu Amoroso Lima, o intelectual líder do grupo pessoas que escreviam nessas páginas.

A partir de um ensaio de Leack sobre o tempo, procura-se precisar certos conceitos conhecimentos que se tem hoje sobre caçadores-coletores e suas representações de espaço e tempo. Tentase também estabelecer a importância que têm para o surgimento de uma representação linear do tempo, o desenvolvimento tecnológico e o aparecimento de religiões salvacionistas e mostrar como, mesmo certa estrutura de representação cíclica se mantém.

A dimensão pulsional do sensível: elaborações acerca da percepção em Renaud Barbaras

In this paper, we analyze the theoretical work of Renaud Barbaras, departing from his proposal to highlight and develop the potential of Husserl's theory of perception, based on the doctrine of perceptive donation according to profiles. We mainly focused on his work entitled Desire and distance: introduction to a phenomenology of perception. We underline the description, operated by the author, about the vital movement as desire and the characterization of the subject of the perception as living. In this condition, the formulation about the priority of a dimension emerges, qualified by Barbaras as pulsion towards the objectifying dimension of classical epistemology in the subject-object relation. We indicate that, according to the author, these rearrangements entail the need to consider the body, perception and movement based on the category of life.

Review of: Solving the Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls: New Light on the Bible, by Edward M. Cook

Edward M. Cook's new book makes an excellent addition to the growing list of "introductions" to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Aimed primarily at a Christian lay and clerical audience, it succeeds admirably in leading its readers through the labyrinthine world of Scroll scholarship and controversy. The book divides itself into two uneven parts. In the first part, chapters 1-4, Cook deals with the discovery of the Scrolls in 1947 and the subsequent history of their decipherment and (often delayed) publication. Cook's treatment of this controversial topic is the most fair and evenhanded I have ever read; he has done meticulous research, reading many accounts of the Scrolls, from Edmund Wilson's in the 1950's to the latest journal articles from 1993. The result is a highly readable account of the finding and purchase of the Scrolls, the appointment of an international team of scholars to decipher and publish them, the delays in publication (including the results of the Six Day War in 1967, when most of the Scroll fragments fell into Israeli hands), and the controversy surrounding then editor-in-chief John Strugnell and the release of the photographs in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Cook is objective and fair throughout, but particularly striking is his sympathetic portrayal of the original seven member editorial team.

Implementing Human Papillomavirus Testing in a Public Health Hospital: Challenges and Opportunities

Objectives: Robust evidence now supports human papillomavirus (HPV) testing as a more effective option to screening and as more sensitive than cytology in detecting high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Our goal was to analyze the performance of the Hybrid Capture II (HC2) assay for high-risk HPV (hrHPV) in women undergoing gynecological examination at a public health hospital as part of the evaluation of HPV screening as an alternative or complement to cytology. Study Design: This analysis is a subset of a cross-sectional study carried out at a large public hospital serving a predominantly low-resource population. A total of 705 women were enrolled; the sensitivity and specificity of each test were estimated and compared. Results: The analysis identified 272 hrHPV-positive women (mean age 36.3 years) and 433 hrHPV-negative women (mean age 41.2 years). HPV testing showed a significantly increased sensitivity of the HC2 assay versus cytology (84.5 vs. 69.7%; p < 0.0001) but a lower specificity (49.90 vs. 88.78%; p < 0.0001). Histomorphometric analysis of the effects of creatine on rat myometrium

Objective: To analyze the myometrial thickness of rats subjected to creatine (Cr) ingestion. Study design: A total of 14 rats was equally divided into the control group (ConGr) receiving 1 ml potable water and the creatine group (CrGr) subjected to the ingestion of 1.6 g/kg Cr diluted in 1 ml potable water. At the end of 8 weeks, the animals were anesthetized (xylazine and ketamine) and sacrificed, the uteri and ovaries stained with hematoxylin and eosin, the thickness of both the myometrium and the epithelium measured and the follicles counted. Results: Analysis revealed a significant increase in thickness of the myometrium in the CrGr (272.26 +/- 66.71 mu m) contrasted with that from the ConGr (160.76 +/- 35.65 mu m), CrGr > ConGr (p < 0001). Conclusion: Our data suggest that Cr changed myometrial morphology in rats by enhancing myometrial thickness, but its action mechanism in the smooth muscle is still unclear.
