The goal of this work is to compile the existing information about the species present in our country. This has been done by means of datasheets that list both local references and reviews by foreign authors that include Argentine taxa. The main information sources consulted were Ringuelet et al. (1967), CLOFFSCA (2003), López et al. (2003; 2006), Liotta (2006) and the online databases of W. N. Eschmeyer and Fish Base. This is an open-ended publication. As such, it will require permanent updating, which will depend on the good will and collaboration of the ichthyological community. With this contribution, we hope to help to build a database of the freshwater fish of Argentina. The completion of this project will provide support to diverse plans emanating from different sectors, as well as promote the diffusion of this field of research and reaffirm Argentina’s sovereign rights over our natural resources. Asociación Argentina de Limnología (AAL)

Este año se cumplieron veinticinco años de la creación de la Asociación Argentina de Limnología. En 1984, en la vieja aula magna de la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo (en esa época esta unidad académica funcionaba en las instalaciones del Museo de La Plata) un conjunto de mujeres y hombres relacionados con esta disciplina concretaban ese ansiado anhelo aprobando los fundamentos de su formación y eligiendo su primer comisión directiva. Los años siguientes fueron de gran impulso concretando la realización de talleres reuniones, ediciones de boletines y una gran comunicación entre sus asociados. En 1991 se realiza la primer reunión internacional en la ciudad de La Plata con gran repercusión y convocatoria, posteriormente se hacen los congresos de 1994 y 1998 en la ciudades de Tucumán y Buenos Aires respectivamente. A partir de esta fecha comienza a diluirse la actividad de la asociación para desaparecer en los primeros años del presente siglo. No obstante, ya sin el marco de la asociación, se realizan congresos en 2004 y 2008, en las ciudades de Chascomús y San Carlos de Bariloche respectivamente, con singular éxito. Este archivo es una pequeña muestra de algo que unió a un grupo de profesionales con un objetivo común: el desarrollo y proyección regional de esta disciplina. A simple vista lo podríamos calificar de un nuevo fracaso, ya que tuvo el mismo fin de la ALOA (Asociación Limnológica y Oceanográfica Argentina), pero no sería totalmente cierto, ya que la magnitud de las últimas reuniones nos indica que el crecimiento de esta ciencia es importante. Por ello, me parece adecuado que dejemos a un sociólogo y un historiador de la ciencia la interpretación de este fragmento de la rica historia del “limnobios” en nuestro país.

Earthquake geology of Myanmar

This thesis describes the active structures of Myanmar and its surrounding regions, and the earthquake geology of the major active structures. Such investigation is needed urgently for this rapidly developing country that has suffered from destructive earthquakes in its long history. To archive a better understanding of the regional active tectonics and the seismic potential in the future, we utilized a global digital elevation model and optical satellite imagery to describe geomorphologic evidence for the principal neotectonic features of the western half of the Southeast Asia mainland. Our investigation shows three distinct active structural systems that accommodate the oblique convergence between the Indian plate and Southeast Asia and the extrusion of Asian territory around the eastern syntaxis of the Himalayan mountain range. Each of these active deformation belts can be further separated into several neotectonic domains, in which structures show distinctive active behaviors from one to another.

In order to better understand the behaviors of active structures, we focused on the active characteristics of the right-lateral Sagaing fault and the oblique subducting northern Sunda megathrust in the second part of this thesis. The detailed geomorphic investigations along these two major plate-interface faults revealed the recent slip behavior of these structures, and plausible recurrence intervals of major seismic events. We also documented the ground deformation of the 2011 Tarlay earthquake in remote eastern Myanmar from remote sensing datasets and post-earthquake field investigations. The field observation and the remote sensing measurements of surface ruptures of the Tarlay earthquake are the first study of this kind in the Myanmar region.
