In 1956 Whitham gave a nonlinear theory for computing the intensity of an acoustic pulse of an arbitrary shape. The theory has been used very successfully in computing the intensity of the sonic bang produced by a supersonic plane. [4.] derived an approximate quasi-linear equation for the propagation of a short wave in a compressible medium. These two methods are essentially nonlinear approximations of the perturbation equations of the system of gas-dynamic equations in the neighborhood of a bicharacteristic curve (or rays) for weak unsteady disturbances superimposed on a given steady solution. In this paper we have derived an approximate quasi-linear equation which is an approximation of perturbation equations in the neighborhood of a bicharacteristic curve for a weak pulse governed by a general system of first order quasi-linear partial differential equations in m + 1 independent variables (t, x1,…, xm) and derived Gubkin's result as a particular case when the system of equations consists of the equations of an unsteady motion of a compressible gas. We have also discussed the form of the approximate equation describing the waves propagating upsteam in an arbitrary multidimensional transonic flow.

We propose a self-regularized pseudo-time marching scheme to solve the ill-posed, nonlinear inverse problem associated with diffuse propagation of coherent light in a tissuelike object. In particular, in the context of diffuse correlation tomography (DCT), we consider the recovery of mechanical property distributions from partial and noisy boundary measurements of light intensity autocorrelation. We prove the existence of a minimizer for the Newton algorithm after establishing the existence of weak solutions for the forward equation of light amplitude autocorrelation and its Frechet derivative and adjoint. The asymptotic stability of the solution of the ordinary differential equation obtained through the introduction of the pseudo-time is also analyzed. We show that the asymptotic solution obtained through the pseudo-time marching converges to that optimal solution provided the Hessian of the forward equation is positive definite in the neighborhood of optimal solution. The superior noise tolerance and regularization-insensitive nature of pseudo-dynamic strategy are proved through numerical simulations in the context of both DCT and diffuse optical tomography. Many biological environments are crowded by macromolecules, organelles and cells which can impede the transport of other cells and molecules. Previous studies have sought to describe these effects using either random walk models or fractional order diffusion equations. Here we examine the transport of both a single agent and a population of agents through an environment containing obstacles of varying size and shape, whose relative densities are drawn from a specified distribution. Our simulation results for a single agent indicate that smaller obstacles are more effective at retarding transport than larger obstacles; these findings are consistent with our simulations of the collective motion of populations of agents. In an attempt to explore whether these kinds of stochastic random walk simulations can be described using a fractional order diffusion equation framework, we calibrate the solution of such a differential equation to our averaged agent density information. Our approach suggests that these kinds of commonly used differential equation models ought to be used with care since we are unable to match the solution of a fractional order diffusion equation to our data in a consistent fashion over a finite time period.

The unsteady mixed convection flow of an incompressible laminar electrically conducting fluid over an impulsively stretched permeable vertical surface in an unbounded quiescent fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field has been investigated. At the same time, the surface temperature is suddenly increased from the surrounding fluid temperature or a constant heat flux is suddenly imposed on the surface. The problem is formulated in such a way that for small time it is governed by Rayleigh type of equation and for large time by Crane type of equation. The non-linear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the unsteady mixed convection flow under boundary layer approximations have been solved analytically by using the homotopy analysis method as well as numerically by an implicit finite difference scheme. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to decrease rapidly with time in a small time interval and they tend to steady-state values for t* >= 5. They also increase with the buoyancy force and suction, but decrease with injection rate. The local skin friction coefficient increases with the magnetic field, but the local Nusselt number decreases. There is a smooth transition from the unsteady state to the steady state. Diffusion in a composite slab consisting of a large number of layers provides an ideal prototype problem for developing and analysing two-scale modelling approaches for heterogeneous media. Numerous analytical techniques have been proposed for solving the transient diffusion equation in a one-dimensional composite slab consisting of an arbitrary number of layers. Most of these approaches, however, require the solution of a complex transcendental equation arising from a matrix determinant for the eigenvalues that is difficult to solve numerically for a large number of layers. To overcome this issue, in this paper, we present a semi-analytical method based on the Laplace transform and an orthogonal eigenfunction expansion. The proposed approach uses eigenvalues local to each layer that can be obtained either explicitly, or by solving simple transcendental equations. The semi-analytical solution is applicable to both perfect and imperfect contact at the interfaces between adjacent layers and either Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin boundary conditions at the ends of the slab. The solution approach is verified for several test cases and is shown to work well for a large number of layers. The work is concluded with an application to macroscopic modelling where the solution of a fine-scale multilayered medium consisting of two hundred layers is compared against an “up-scaled” variant of the same problem involving only ten layers.

An analysis is performed to study the unsteady combined forced and free convection flow (mixed convection flow) of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid in the vicinity of an axisymmetric stagnation point adjacent to a heated vertical surface. The unsteadiness in the flow and temperature fields is due to the free stream velocity, which varies arbitrarily with time. Both constant wall temperature and constant heat flux conditions are considered in this analysis. By using suitable transformations, the Navier-Stokes and energy equations with four independent variables (x, y, z, t) are reduced to a system of partial differential equations with two independent variables (eta, tau). These transformations also uncouple the momentum and energy equations resulting in a primary axisymmetric flow, in an energy equation dependent on the primary flow and in a buoyancy-induced secondary flow dependent on both primary flow and energy. The resulting system of partial differential equations has been solved numerically by using both implicit finite-difference scheme and differential-difference method. An interesting result is that for a decelerating free stream velocity, flow reversal occurs in the primary flow after certain instant of time and the magnetic field delays or prevents the flow reversal. The surface heat transfer and the surface shear stress in the primary flow increase with the magnetic field, but the surface shear stress in the buoyancy-induced secondary flow decreases. Further the heat transfer increases with the Prandtl number, but the surface shear stress in the secondary flow decreases.

A simple, sufficiently accurate and efficient method for approximate solutions of the Falkner-Skan equation is proposed here for a wide range of the pressure gradient parameter. The proposed approximate solutions are obtained utilising a known solution of another differential equation.

The advent of large and fast digital computers and development of numerical techniques suited to these have made it possible to review the analysis of important fundamental and practical problems and phenomena of engineering which have remained intractable for a long time. The understanding of the load transfer between pin and plate is one such. Inspite of continuous attack on these problems for over half a century, classical solutions have remained limited in their approach and value to the understanding of the phenomena and the generation of design data. On the other hand, the finite element methods that have grown simultaneously with the recent development of computers have been helpful in analysing specific problems and answering specific questions, but are yet to be harnessed to assist in obtaining with economy a clearer understanding of the phenomena of partial separation and contact, friction and slip, and fretting and fatigue in pin joints. Against this background, it is useful to explore the application of the classical simple differential equation methods with the aid of computer power to open up this very important area. In this paper we describe some of the recent and current work at the Indian Institute of Science in this last direction.

The probability distribution of the eigenvalues of a second-order stochastic boundary value problem is considered. The solution is characterized in terms of the zeros of an associated initial value problem. It is further shown that the probability distribution is related to the solution of a first-order nonlinear stochastic differential equation. Solutions of this equation based on the theory of Markov processes and also on the closure approximation are presented. A string with stochastic mass distribution is considered as an example for numerical work. The theoretical probability distribution functions are compared with digital simulation results. The comparison is found to be reasonably good.

We prove the spectral invariance of SG pseudo-differential operators on L-P(R-n), 1 < p < infinity, by using the equivalence of ellipticity and Fredholmness of SG pseudo-differential operators on L-p(R-n), 1 < p < infinity. A key ingredient in the proof is the spectral invariance of SC pseudo-differential operators on L-2(R-n).

Our investigations in this paper are centred around the mathematical analysis of a ldquomodal waverdquo problem. We have considered the axisymmetric flow of an inviscid liquid in a thinwalled viscoelastic tube under certain simplifying assumptions. We have first derived the propagation space equations in the long wave limit and also given a general procedure to derive these equations for arbitrary wave length, when the flow is irrotational. We have used the method of operators of multiple scales to derive the nonlinear Schrödinger equation governing the modulation of periodic waves and we have elaborated on the ldquolong modulated wavesrdquo and the ldquomodulated long wavesrdquo. We have also examined the existence and stability of Stokes waves in this system. This is followed by a discussion of the progressive wave solutions of the long wave equations. One of the most important results of our paper is that the propagation space equations are no longer partial differential equations but they are in terms of pseudo-differential operators.

The unsteady two-dimensional laminar mixed convection flow in the stagnation region of a vertical surface has been studied where the buoyancy forces are due to both the temperature and concentration gradients. The unsteadiness in the flow and temperature fields is caused by the time-dependent free stream velocity. Both arbitrary wall temperature and concentration, and arbitrary surface heat and mass flux variations have been considered. The Navier-Stokes equations, the energy equation and the concentration equation, which are coupled nonlinear partial differential equations with three independent variables, have been reduced to a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The analysis has also been done using boundary layer approximations and the difference between the solutions has been discussed. The governing ordinary differential equations for buoyancy assisting and buoyancy opposing regions have been solved numerically using a shooting method. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer coefficients increase with the buoyancy parameter. However, the skin friction coefficient increases with the parameter lambda, which represents the unsteadiness in the free stream velocity, but the heat and mass transfer coefficients decrease. In the case of buoyancy opposed flow, the solution does not exist beyond a certain critical value of the buoyancy parameter. Also, for a certain range of the buoyancy parameter dual solutions exist.

A novel universal approach to understand the self-deflagration in solids has been attempted by using basic thermodynamic equation of partial differentiation, where burning mte depends on the initial temperature and pressure of the system. Self-deflagrating solids are rare and are reported only in few compounds like ammonium perchlorate (AP), polystyrene peroxide and tetrazole. This approach has led us to understand the unique characteristics of AP, viz. the existence of low pressure deflagration limit (LPL 20 atm), hitherto not understood sufficiently. This analysis infers that the overall surface activation energy comprises of two components governed by the condensed phase and gas phase processes. The most attractive feature of the model is the identification of a new subcritical regime I' below LPL where AP does not burn. The model is aptly supported by the thermochemical computations and temperature-profile analyses of the combustion train. The thermodynamic model is further corroborated from the kinetic analysis of the high pressure (1-30 atm) DTA thermograms which affords distinct empirical decomposition rate laws in regimes I' and 1 (20-60 atm). Using Fourier-Kirchoff one dimensional heat transfer differential equation, the phase transition thickness and the melt-layer thickness have been computed which conform to the experimental data.

In this paper, we present a novel analytical formulation for the coupled partial differential equations governing electrostatically actuated constrained elastic structures of inhomogeneous material composition. We also present a computationally efficient numerical framework for solving the coupled equations over a reference domain with a fixed finite-element mesh. This serves two purposes: (i) a series of problems with varying geometries and piece-wise homogeneous and/or inhomogeneous material distribution can be solved with a single pre-processing step, (ii) topology optimization methods can be easily implemented by interpolating the material at each point in the reference domain from a void to a dielectric or a conductor. This is attained by considering the steady-state electrical current conduction equation with a `leaky capacitor' model instead of the usual electrostatic equation. This formulation is amenable for both static and transient problems in the elastic domain coupled with the quasi-electrostatic electric field. The procedure is numerically implemented on the COMSOL Multiphysics (R) platform using the weak variational form of the governing equations. Examples have been presented to show the accuracy and versatility of the scheme. The accuracy of the scheme is validated for the special case of piece-wise homogeneous material in the limit of the leaky-capacitor model approaching the ideal case.

Nonlinear static and dynamic response analyses of a clamped. rectangular composite plate resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation have been studied using von Karman's relations. Incorporating the material damping, the governing coupled, nonlinear partial differential equations are obtained for the plate under step pressure pulse load excitation. These equations have been solved by a one-term solution and by applying Galerkin's technique to the deflection equation. This yields an ordinary nonlinear differential equation in time. The nonlinear static solution is obtained by neglecting the time-dependent variables. Thc nonlinear dynamic damped response is obtained by applying the ultraspherical polynomial approximation (UPA) technique. The influences of foundation modulus, shear modulus, orthotropy, etc. upon the nonlinear static and dynamic responses have been presented.
