The mathematical representation of Brunswik s lens model has been usedextensively to study human judgment and provides a unique opportunity to conduct ameta-analysis of studies that covers roughly five decades. Specifically, we analyzestatistics of the lens model equation (Tucker, 1964) associated with 259 different taskenvironments obtained from 78 papers. In short, we find on average fairly high levelsof judgmental achievement and note that people can achieve similar levels of cognitiveperformance in both noisy and predictable environments. Although overall performancevaries little between laboratory and field studies, both differ in terms of components ofperformance and types of environments (numbers of cues and redundancy). An analysisof learning studies reveals that the most effective form of feedback is information aboutthe task. We also analyze empirically when bootstrapping is more likely to occur. Weconclude by indicating shortcomings of the kinds of studies conducted to date, limitationsin the lens model methodology, and possibilities for future research.

Summary Skin is the essential interface between our body and its environment; not only does it prevent water loss and protect us from external insults it also plays an essential role in the central nervous system acting as a major sense organ primarily for touch and pain. The main cell type present in skin, keratinocyte, undergoes a differentiation process leading to the formation of this protecting barrier. This work is intended to contribute to the understanding of how keratinocyte differentiates and skin functions. To do this, we studied two genetic skin diseases: Erythrokeratodermia variabilis and Mal de Meleda. Our approach was to examine the expression and localization of proteins implicated in these two pathologies in normal and diseased tissues and to determine the influence of mutant proteins at the molecular and cellular levels. Connexins are major components of gap junctions, channels allowing direct communication between cells. Our laboratory has identified mutations in both connexin 30.3 (Cx30.3) and 31 (Cx31) to be causally involved in erythrokeratodermia variabilis (EKV), an autosomal dominant disorder of keratinization. In the first chapter, we show a new mutation of Cx31, L209P-Cx31, in 3 EKV patients, extending the field of EKV-causing mutations although the mechanism by which connexin mutations lead to the disease is unclear. In the second chapter, we studied the effect of F137L-Cx30.3 on expression, trafficking and localization of cotransfected Cx31 and Cx30.3 in connexin-deficient HeLa cells. The F137 amino acid, highly conserved in connexin family, is oriented towards the channel pore and F137L mutation in either Cx30.3 or Cx31 lead to EKV. As two genes can lead to EKV when mutated, our hypothesis was that Cx31 and Cx30.3 might cooperate at a molecular level. We were able to demonstrate a physical interaction between Cx31 and Cx30.3. The presence of F137L-Cx30.3 disturbed the trafficking of both connexins, less connexins were integrated into gap junctions and thus, the coupling between cell was diminished. Connexins formed in the presence of F137L-Cx30.3 are degraded at their exit from the endoplasmic reticulum. In conclusion, our results indicate that the genetic heterogeneity of EKV is due to mutations in two interacting proteins. F137L-Cx30.3 has a dominant negative effect and affects Cx31, disturbing cellular communication in epidermal cells. Mal de Meleda is an autosomal recessive inflammatory and a keratotic palmoplantar skin disorder due to mutations in SLURP1 (secreted LY6/PLAUR-related protein 1). SLURP1 belongs to the LY6/PLAUR family of proteins and has the particularity of being secreted instead of being GPI-anchored. The high degree of structural similarity between SLURP1 and the three fingers motif of snake neurotoxins and LYNX 1-C suggests that this protein could interact with the neuronal acetylcholine receptors. In the third chapter, we show that SLURP1 potentiates responses of the a7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAchR) to acetylcholine. These results identify SLURP1 as a secreted epidermal neuromodulator that is likely to be essential for palmoplantar skin. In the fourth chapter, we show that SLURP1 is expressed in the granular layer of the epidermis but is absent from skin biopsies of Mal de Meleda patients. SLURP1 is also present in secretions such as sweat, tears or saliva. An in vitro analysis on two mutant of SLURP-I demonstrates that W15R-SLURP1 is absent in cells while G86R-SLURP1 is expressed and secreted, suggesting that SLURP1 can lead to the disease by either an absent or an abnormal protein. Finally, in the fifth chapter, we analyse the expression and biological properties of other LY6/PLAUR members, clustered around SLURP] on chromosome 8. Their GPI-anchored or secreted status were analysed in vitro. SLURP1, LYNX1-A and -B are secreted while LYPDC2 and LYNX 1-C are GPI anchored. Three of these proteins are expressed in the epidermis and in cultured keratinocytes. These results suggest that these LY6/PLAUR members may have an important role in skin homeostasis.

In this paper we study the disability transition probabilities (as well as the mortalityprobabilities) due to concurrent factors to age such as income, gender and education. Althoughit is well known that ageing and socioeconomic status influence the probability ofcausing functional disorders, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the combined effectof those factors along the individuals' life and how this affects the transition from one degreeof disability to another. The assumption that tomorrow's disability state is only a functionof the today's state is very strong, since disability is a complex variable that depends onseveral other elements than time. This paper contributes into the field in two ways: (1) byattending the distinction between the initial disability level and the process that leads tohis course (2) by addressing whether and how education, age and income differentially affectthe disability transitions. Using a Markov chain discrete model and a survival analysis, weestimate the probability by year and individual characteristics that changes the state of disabilityand the duration that it takes its progression in each case. We find that people withan initial state of disability have a higher propensity to change and take less time to transitfrom different stages. Men do that more frequently than women. Education and incomehave negative effects on transition. Moreover, we consider the disability benefits associatedto those changes along different stages of disability and therefore we offer some clues onthe potential savings of preventive actions that may delay or avoid those transitions. Onpure cost considerations, preventive programs for improvement show higher benefits thanthose for preventing deterioration, and in general terms, those focussing individuals below65 should go first. Finally the trend of disability in Spain seems not to change among yearsand regional differences are not found.

Closely related species may be very difficult to distinguish morphologically, yet sometimes morphology is the only reasonable possibility for taxonomic classification. Here we present learning-vector-quantization artificial neural networks as a powerful tool to classify specimens on the basis of geometric morphometric shape measurements. As an example, we trained a neural network to distinguish between field and root voles from Procrustes transformed landmark coordinates on the dorsal side of the skull, which is so similar in these two species that the human eye cannot make this distinction. Properly trained neural networks misclassified only 3% of specimens. Therefore, we conclude that the capacity of learning vector quantization neural networks to analyse spatial coordinates is a powerful tool among the range of pattern recognition procedures that is available to employ the information content of geometric morphometrics.

Records with the search string biogeograph* were collected from the Science Citation Index (SCI). A total of 3456 records were downloaded for the 1945-2006 period from titles of articles and reviews, and 10,543 records were downloaded for 1991-2006, taking into consideration also abstracts and keywords. Temporal trends of publications, geographical and institutional distribution of the research output, authorship, and core journals were evaluated. There were as many as 122 countries carrying out biogeographic research; in the most recent period, USA is the top producing country, followed by the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, and Canada. There were 17,493 authors contributing to the field. During 1991-2006 there were 4098 organizations with authors involved in biogeographic research; institutions with higher number of papers are the Natural History Museum (United Kingdom), the University of California, Berkeley (USA), the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (France), the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Mexico), the American Museum of Natural History (USA) and the Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia). Research articles are spread over a variety of journals, with the Journal of Biogeography, Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, Molecular Ecology, and Biological Journal of the Linnean Society being the core journals. From 28,759 keywords retrieved those with the highest frequency were evolution, phylogeny, diversity, mitochondrial DNA, pattern(s), systematics, and population(s). We conclude that publications on biogeography have increased substantially during the last years, especially since 1998. The preferred journal for biogeographic papers is the Journal of Biogeography. Most frequent keywords seem to indicate that biogeography fits well within both evolutionary biology and ecology, with molecular biology and phylogenetics being important factors that drive their current development.

We investigate whether the gender composition of teams affect theireconomic performance. We study a large business game, played in groups ofthree, where each group takes the role of a general manager. There are twoparallel competitions, one involving undergraduates and the other involvingMBAs. Our analysis shows that teams formed by three women aresignificantly outperformed by any other gender combination, both at theundergraduate and MBA levels. Looking across the performancedistribution, we find that for undergraduates, three women teams areoutperformed throughout, but by as much as 10pp at the bottom and by only1pp at the top. For MBAs, at the top, the best performing group is two menand one woman. The differences in performance are explained bydifferences in decision-making. We observe that three women teams are lessaggressive in their pricing strategies, invest less in R&D, and invest more insocial sustainability initiatives, than any other gender combination teams. Finally, we find support for the hypothesis that it is poor work dynamicsamong the three women teams that drives the results.

The aim of this contribution is to explore how the recent internationalization and the increasing importance of 'cosmopolitan capital' has impacted on the structure and character of the field of the Swiss business elite. For this purpose we will develop the notion of cosmopolitan capital and comparatively investigate the field of the Swiss business elite in 1980, 2000 and 2010 with multiple correspondence analysis. We can show that in this period international managers with transnational careers and networks not only grow in number, but come to conquer the apex of the biggest and highest capitalized Swiss firms. At the same time, national forms of capital decline in importance and Swiss managers themselves are differentiated increasingly into national and international fractions.

Several ink dating methods based on solvents analysis using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were proposed in the last decades. These methods follow the drying of solvents from ballpoint pen inks on paper and seem very promising. However, several questions arose over the last few years among questioned documents examiners regarding the transparency and reproducibility of the proposed techniques. These questions should be carefully studied for accurate and ethical application of this methodology in casework. Inspired by a real investigation involving ink dating, the present paper discusses this particular issue throughout four main topics: aging processes, dating methods, validation procedures and data interpretation. This work presents a wide picture of the ink dating field, warns about potential shortcomings and also proposes some solutions to avoid reporting errors in court.

The spatial variability of strongly weathered soils under sugarcane and soybean/wheat rotation was quantitatively assessed on 33 fields in two regions in São Paulo State, Brazil: Araras (15 fields with sugarcane) and Assis (11 fields with sugarcane and seven fields with soybean/wheat rotation). Statistical methods used were: nested analysis of variance (for 11 fields), semivariance analysis and analysis of variance within and between fields. Spatial levels from 50 m to several km were analyzed. Results are discussed with reference to a previously published study carried out in the surroundings of Passo Fundo (RS). Similar variability patterns were found for clay content, organic C content and cation exchange capacity. The fields studied are quite homogeneous with respect to these relatively stable soil characteristics. Spatial variability of other characteristics (resin extractable P, pH, base- and Al-saturation and also soil colour), varies with region and, or land use management. Soil management for sugarcane seems to have induced modifications to greater depths than for soybean/wheat rotation. Surface layers of soils under soybean/wheat present relatively little variation, apparently as a result of very intensive soil management. The major part of within-field variation occurs at short distances (< 50 m) in all study areas. Hence, little extra information would be gained by increasing sampling density from, say, 1/km² to 1/50 m². For many purposes, the soils in the study regions can be mapped with the same observation density, but residual variance will not be the same in all areas. Bulk sampling may help to reveal spatial patterns between 50 and 1.000 m.

Summary Attempts to develop cancer vaccines based on molecularly defined tumorassociated antigens were initiated more than 10 years ago. Apart from CTLmediated anti-tumor immunity, interests are. now focused on CD4 T cells that are central players of immune responses. The identification of MHC class-II-restricted epitopes from numerous tumor antigens together with the development of monitoring tools offers the opportunity to quantitatively and qualitatively study antigen-specific CD4 T lymphocytes in cancer patients and to induce both CTL and T helper responses in cancer patients. In this work, we first aimed at validating the use of peptide:MHC class II complex (pMHC II) multimers to quantitate the CD4 T cell response against the hemagglutinin-derived epitope HAso~-si9 from influenza virus presented by HLA-DRBl*0401. By analysing samples from healthy volunteers vaccinated with ananti-influenza vaccine, we could demonstrate a transient expansion and activation of HA-specific CD4 T cells after treatment. Moreover, pMHC II multimers helped us to study the heterogeneity of HAspecific CD4 T cells found in peripheral blood of healthy individuals. Then, we aimed to analyse Melan-A-specific CD4 T cell responses in metastatic melanoma patients. We first demonstrated the presence of CD4 T cells specific for the previously described Melan-A51_73 epitope presented by HLA-DRB 1 *0401 in peripheral blood of those patients. Second, we described and characterised 2 new Melan-A-derived peptides that are presented by different MHC II molecules to CD4 T cells. Specific cells for these epitopes were found in 9/ 16 rnelánoma patients analysed. In addition, pMHC II multimers loaded with one of the two epitopes allowed us to detect ex vivo Melan-A-specific CD4 T cells in peripheral blood of a melanoma patient. Together, these results suggest a potential use of pMHC II multimers in analysing in detail antigen-specific CD4 T cells. However, ex vivo monitoring of such cells will be possible only in particular conditions. Nevertheless, the new Melan-A-derived MHC II-restricted epitopes described here will help to study in more detail Melan-A-specific CD4 T cells in melanoma patients, a field where only scarce data are available.

Introduction. This paper studies the situation of research on Catalan literature between 1976 and 2003 by carrying out a bibliometric and social network analysis of PhD theses defended in Spain. It has a dual aim: to present interesting results for the discipline and to demonstrate the methodological efficacy of scientometric tools in the humanities, a field in which they are often neglected due to the difficulty of gathering data. Method. The analysis was performed on 151 records obtained from the TESEO database of PhD theses. The quantitative estimates include the use of the UCINET and Pajek software packages. Authority control was performed on the records. Analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the sample and the distribution of responses to each question. Sex differences on key questions were analysed using the Chi-squared test. Results. The value of the figures obtained is demonstrated. The information obtained on the topic and the periods studied in the theses, and on the actors involved (doctoral students, thesis supervisors and members of defence committees), provide important insights into the mechanisms of humanities disciplines. The main research tendencies of Catalan literature are identified. It is observed that the composition of members of the thesis defence committees follows Lotka's Law. Conclusions. Bibliometric analysis and social network analysis may be especially useful in the humanities and in other fields which are lacking in scientometric data in comparison with the experimental sciences.

A citation analysis was carried out on the most important research journals in the field of Catalan literature between 1974 and 2003. The indicators and qualitative parameters obtained show the value of performing citation analysis in cultural and linguistic areas that are poorly covered by the A&HCI. Catalan literature shows a similar pattern to that of humanities in general, but it could still be in a stage of consolidation because too little work has as yet been published.

This paper examines the most productive authors, institutions and countries in regional and urban science from 1991 to 2000 using information on published articles (and pages) from a sample of widely recognized journals in this field: ARS, JUE, JRS, IJURR, IRSR, PRS, RSUE, RS and US. We also consider the relation between the country of the institution named in articles and the country in which the journal is published, in order to know if there are a home publication bias in regional and urban science. Analysis was made for the whole decade and by subperiods, this allowed us to make a more dynamic interpretation of the results
