We report development of a new fiber doped with PbSe quantum dots for nonlinear optical applications. PbSe quantum dots related absorption peaks were obtained at 1021, 1093 and 1351 nm. The resonant optical nonlinearity and attenuation at 1500 nm were measured to be 9.4 × 10−16 m2/W and 0.01 dB/m, respectively. The emission around 1540 nm was observed upon near resonant pumping at 1064 nm.

Lutetium fluorides with different compositions, crystal phases, and morphologies, such as beta-NaLuF4 hexagonal microprisms, microdisks, mirotubes, alpha-NaLuF4 submicrospheres, LuF3 octahedra, and NH4Lu2F7 icosahedra, prolate ellipsoids and spherical particles have been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the samples. The intrinsic structural feature of lutetium fluorides, the solution pH values, F- sources, and organic additives (Cit(3-) and EDTA) account for the ultimate shape evolutions of the final products. The possible formation mechanisms for products with various architectures have been presented. Additionally, we investigated the upconversion luminescence properties of beta-NaLuF4: 20% Yb3+/2% Er3+ with different morphologies.

Y2(1-x) Gd2xSiWO8 : A ( 0 <= x <= 1; A= Eu3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, Er3+) phosphor films have been prepared on silica glass substrates through the sol - gel dip-coating process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), atomic force microscope (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence spectra as well as lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of the XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 800 degrees C and crystallized completely at 1000 degrees C. The AFM and SEM study revealed that the phosphor films, which mainly consisted of closely packed grains with an average size of 90 - 120 nm with a thickness of 660 nm, were uniform and crack free. Owing to an efficient energy transfer from the WO42- groups to the activators, the doped lanthanide ion ( A) showed its characteristic f - f transition emissions in crystalline Y2(1-x) Gd2xSiWO8 (0 <= x <= 1) films. The optimum concentrations for Eu3+, Dy3+, Sm3+, Er3+ were determined to be 21, 5, 3 and 7 mol% of Y3+ in Y2SiWO8 films, respectively.

A new blue phosphorescent glass-ceramic, Eu2+ and Nd3+, co-doped CaO-Al2O3-B2O3, was synthesized. After the irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) light, the glass-ceramic emitted blue long-lasting phosphorescence (LLP) with a spectrum peaking at about 464 nm ascribed to the characteristic 4f(6)5d(1) -> 8S(7/2) transition of Eu2+. This phosphorescence can be seen in the dark 1 h after the irradiation. However, the transparent Eu2+ and Nd3+ co-doped CaO-Al2O3-B2O3 glass did not show the phosphorescence. By the X-ray diffraction diffusion (XRD) data, alpha-CaAl2B2O7 was demonstrated to be the crystallites in the glass-ceramic. We think that alpha-CaAl2B2O7:Eu2+ Nd3+ crystallites produced during the heat treatment of the glass contribute to the LLP of the glass-ceramic.

Multi-color LLP phenomenon was observed in Mn2+-doped ZnO-B2O3-SiO2 glassceramics after the irradiation of a UV lamp at room temperature. Transparent ZnO-B2O3-SiO2 glass emitted reddish LLP while opaque glass-ceramics prepared by the glass sample after heat treatment emitted yellowish or greenish LLP. The change of the phosphorescence is due to the alteration of co-ordination state of Mn2+. The phosphorescence of the samples was seen in the dark with naked eyes even 12 h after the irradiation with a UV lamp (lambda(max) = 254 nm) for 30 min. Based on the approximative t(-1) decay law of the phosphorescence, we suggest that the LLP is attributed to the thermally assisted electron-hole recombination.

A new compound KMgLa(PO4)(2), isotypic with monoclinic LaPO4, is reported. Its cell parameters have been determined from X-ray powder diffraction data. Crystallization occurs in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n (No. 14) with a = 6.839(3) Angstrom, b = 7.066(1) Angstrom, c = 6.523(3) Angstrom, beta = 103.42(4)degrees, and Z = 2. It was found that the KMgLa(PO4)(2) phase was isostructural with monoclinic LaPO4. The difference between them was that half of the La atoms in LaPO4 were couplingly substituted with the same amount of Mg and K atoms. This isomorphous substitution was confirmed by IR and Eu3+-doped excitation and emission spectra and by elemental analysis of single crystals. The spectroscopic data were compared with those of LaPO4:Eu3+. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

There is currently a need to expand the range of graft materials available to orthopaedic surgeons. This study investigated the effect of ternary phosphate based glass (PBG) compositions on the behaviour of osteoblast and osteoblast-like cells. PBGs of the formula in mol% P2O5 (50)-CaO (50-X)-Na2O (X), where X was either 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 were produced and their influence on the proliferation, differentiation and death in vitro of adult human bone marrow stromal cells (hBMSCs) and human fetal osteoblast 1.19 (HFOB 1.19) cells were assessed. Tissue culture plastic (TCP) and hydroxyapatite (HA) were used as controls. Exposure to PBGs in culture inhibited cell adhesion, proliferation and increased cell death in both cell types studied. There was no significant difference in %cell death between the PBGs which was significantly greater than the controls. However, compared to other PBGs, a greater number of cells was found on the 48 mol% CaO which may have been due to either increased adherence, proliferation or both. This composition was capable of supporting osteogenic proliferation and early differentiation and supports the notion that chemical modification of the glass could to lead to a more biologically compatible substrate with the potential to support osteogenic grafting. Realisation of this potential should lead to the development of novel grafting strategies for the treatment of problematic bone defects.

Acidification of an isopropanol solution containing mixtures of [Ti(OPri)(4)] and [W(OEt)(5)] produced solutions from which various TiO2, WO3 and TiO2/WO3 thin films could be obtained by dip coating and annealing. The films were analysed by X-ray diffraction, SEM/EDAX, Raman, electronic spectra, contact angle and photoactivity with respect to destruction of an over layer of stearic acid. The TiO2/WO3 films were shown to be mixtures of two phases TiO2 and WO3 rather than a solid solution TixWyO2. The 2% tungsten oxide doped titania films were shown to be the most effective photocatalysts. All of the TiO2 and TiO2/WO3 films showed light induced superhydrophillicity. DC and AC electrical conductivity measurements in single crystals of diammonium hydrogen phosphate along the c axis show anomalous variations at 174, 246 and 416 K. The low-frequency dielectric constant also exhibits peaks exactly at these temperatures with a thermal hysteresis of 13 degrees C for the peak at 416 K. These specific features of the electrical properties are in agreement with earlier NMR second-moment data and can be identified with three distinct phase transitions that occur in the crystal. The electrical conductivity values have been found to increase linearly with impurity concentration in specimens doped with a specific amount of SO42- ions. The mechanisms of the phase transition and of the electrical conduction process are discussed in detail.

The magnetic properties of Mn-doped ZnO (ZnO:Mn) nanorods grown by hydrothermal process at a temperature of 200 8C and a growth time of 3 h have been studied. The samples were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and SQUID magnetometry. Mn (3 wt%) and (5 wt%)-doped ZnO samples exhibit paramagnetic and ferromagnetic behavior, respectively, at room temperature. The spin-glass behavior is observed from the samples with respect to the decrease of temperature. At 10 K, both samples exhibit a hysteresis loop with relatively low coercivity. The room-temperature ferromagnetism in 5 wt% Mn-doped ZnO nanorods is attributed to the increase in the specific area of grain boundaries, interaction between dopant Mn2þ ions substituted at Zn2þ site and the interaction between Mn2þ ions and Zn2þ ions from the ZnO host lattice

The evidence of successful growth of Mn-doped PbS (Pb(1-x)Mn(x)S) nanocrystals (NCs) in SiO(2)-Na(2)CO(3)-Al(2)O(3)-PbO(2)-B(2)O(3) template, using the fusion method, is reported on in this study. The as-grown Pb(1-x)Mn(x)S NC is characterized using optical absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance, and atomic force microscopy. The data are discussed in terms of two distinct scenarios, namely a core-doped and a shell-doped nanostructure. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Li(2)O-B(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) glass system, un-doped and doped with LiF, and/or TiO(2) was synthesized by the fusion method and its physical properties were investigated by thermoluminescence (TL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The samples were subjected to gamma-rays from a colbalt-60 ((60)Co) source. These techniques provided evidence of LiF and LiF doped with Ti crystal formation in the glass system. A TL glow peak at about 433 K was sensitive to (60)Co gamma-rays and showed good linearity with doses and consequently could be used to quantify radiation doses. To facilitate the design of laser host materials with optimized emission properties, detailed structural information at the atomic level is essential, regarding the local bonding environment of the active ions (distribution over distinct lattice sites) and their extent of local clustering as well as their population distribution over separate micro- or nanophases. The present study explores the potential of solid state NMR spectroscopy to provide such understanding for rare-earth doped lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) ceramics. As the NMR signals of the paramagnetic dopant species cannot be observed directly, two complementary approaches are utilized: (1) direct observation of diamagnetic mimics using Sc-45 NMR and (2) study of the paramagnetic interaction of the constituent host lattice nuclei with the rare-earth dopant, using Pb-207 NMR lineshape analysis. Sc-45 MAS NMR spectra of scandium-doped PLZT samples unambiguously reveal scandium to be six-coordinated, suggesting that this rare-earth ion substitutes in the B site. Static Pb-207 spin echo NMR spectra of a series of Tm-doped PLZT samples reveal a clear influence of paramagnetic rare-earth dopant concentration on the NMR lineshape. In the latter case high-fidelity spectra can be obtained by spin echo mapping under systematic incrementation of the excitation frequency, benefiting from the signal-to-noise enhancement afforded by spin echo train Fourier transforms. Consistent with XRD data, the Pb-207 NMR lineshape analysis suggests that statistical incorporation into the PLZT lattice occurs at dopant levels of up to 1 wt.% Tm3+, while at higher levels the solubility limit is reached.
