Esta dissertação tem por objectivo avaliar a eficácia do processo de mudança organizacional, através das acções dos líderes, da empresa que lidera o mercado de telecomunicações em Cabo Verde, que foi objecto de um processo de reestruturação, que consistiu essencialmente na implementação de um Sistema de Gestão da Qualidade (SGQ). A implementação do referido sistema é entendida, nesta dissertação, como um modelo de mudança organizacional. Para atingir os objectivos preconizados, foi realizado um estudo de caso que contempla uma análise qualitativa dos documentos da empresa e de dados recolhidos através de entrevistas realizadas no período compreendido entre Fevereiro e Agosto de 2010. O estudo procurou compreender o contributo das práticas de liderança para a eficácia da gestão da qualidade. Nesta perspectiva, importa salientar que o tipo de liderança identificado neste estudo de caso é a liderança transformacional, que tecnicamente é o adequado quando se pretende implementar mudanças profundas e que implicam uma redefinição da missão, visão e valores da organização. Importa referir ainda que vários estudos empíricos têm demonstrado de forma consistente, uma relação positiva entre a liderança transformacional e os indicadores de eficiência no trabalho. Procurou-se entender ainda se os líderes na condução do processo de mudança organizacional da empresa estudada, seguiram o modelo proposto por John P. Kotter para a implementação eficaz de mudanças nas organizações, comparando os oito passos propostos pelo autor com os ocorridos na empresa. A avaliação deste estudo de caso permitiu concluir que a essência do modelo foi aplicado. This paper intended to assess the effectiveness of the process of organizational change, through the actions of the leaders of the company that leads the telecommunications market in Cape Verde, which was involved in a restructuration process, covering mainly the implementation of a Quality Management System (QMS). The implementation of this system is understood in this case, as a model of organizational change. To achieve the proposed goals, we performed a case study based on a qualitative analysis of corporate documents and data collected through interviews conducted between February 2010 and August 2010. This study tried to understand the role of leadership practices for the effectiveness of the quality management. In this perspective, it should be noted that the type of leadership identified in this case study is the transformational one, which, technically, is the appropriate when trying to implement significant change, which imply a redefinition of the mission, vision and values of the organization. It should be noted also that several empirical studies have consistently demonstrated a positive relationship between transformational leadership and the performance indicators in the workplace. We also tried to understand if the leaders, in driving the process of organizational change in the company studied, followed the model proposed by John P. Kotter for implementing effective change in organizations, by comparing the eight steps proposed by the author with those verified in the company. The assessment of this case study allowed us to conclude that the essence of the model is applicable to this case.

It is well known that pH is an important parameter for controlling the eucalyptus pulp bleaching when using the final chlorine dioxide stage, since it affects the effectiveness of the process. Recommendations found in the literature for operating are in the 3.5 to 4.0 range. However, in this paper it was shown that final chlorine dioxide has better performance, with significant brightness gain while also preserving pulp quality, when it is operated at near neutral pH. This result can be explained by the generation of sodium bicarbonate in situ upon adding carbon dioxide at this stage.

Semiconductor photocatalysis has received much attention during last three decades as a promising solution for both energy generation and environmental problems. Heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation allows the degradation of organic compounds into carbon dioxide and water in the presence of a semiconductor catalyst and UV light source. The •OH radicals formed during the photocatalytic processes are powerful oxidizing agents and can mineralise a number of organic contaminants. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), due to its chemical stability, non-toxicity and low cost represents one of the most efficient photocatalyst. However, only the ultraviolet fraction of the solar radiation is active in the photoexcitation processes using pure TiO2 and although, TiO2 can treat a wide range of organic pollutants the effectiveness of the process for pollution abatement is still low. A more effective and efficient catalyst therefore must be formulated. Doping of TiO2 was considered with the aim of improving photocatalytic properties. In this study TiO2 catalyst was prepared using the sol-gel method. Metal and nonmetal doped TiO2 catalysts were prepared. The photoactivity of the catalyst was evaluated by the photodegradation of different dyes and pesticides in aqueous solution. High photocatalytic degradation of all the pollutants was observed with doped TiO2. Structural and optical properties of the catalysts were characterized using XRD, BET surface area, UV-Vis. DRS, CHNS analysis, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, FTIR and TG. All the catalysts showed the anatase phase. The presence of dopants shifts the absorption of TiO2 into the visible region indicating the possibility of using visible light for photocatalytic processes.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a existência de relação entre o conhecimento de técnicas de projeto e a efetividade do processo de mudança para uma atuação com maior responsabilidade ambiental. Trata-se de um estudo de caso sobre a Petrobras, mais especificamente sobre a Unidade de Negócios Bacia de Campos, onde foram efetuadas pesquisas de campo por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas e de questionários distribuídos a profissionais alocados na área de Segurança, Meio-ambiente e Saúde nos ativos desta unidade. Os dados resultantes das pesquisas foram tratados quali-quantitativamente, identificando-se que na percepção destes profissionais indica uma correlação significativa entre o nível de maturidade na utilização de técnicas de projeto e o nível de responsabilidade ambiental da organização.

The technique of ion nitriding, despite being fully consolidated in the industry, has great limitations when applied to the treatment of small parts. This is because effects that occur due to non-uniformity of the electric field, generate localized heating in parts, damaging the uniformity of nitrided layer. In addition, because the samples are treated static parts thereof are untreated. To expand the use of plasma nitriding, this work presents the development, assembly and testing of a prototype plasma reactor with rotatory cathodic cage [patent pending], able to meet these needs, giving the material a uniform treatment and opening doors to industrial scale production. The samples tested with hexagonal nuts are 6.0 mm in diameter, made of stainless steel AISI 304 nitrided at a pressure of 1 mbar in an atmosphere of 20% H2 + 80% N2 for 1 h. After treatment, testing visual inspection, optical microscopy and microhardness were carried out to check the effectiveness of the process for uniformity and hardness of the parts. All samples exhibited uniform color, and matte brownish, unlike the untreated samples, silver color and gloss. The hardness of the surface (top and sides) was 65% and even higher than the original hardness. The nitrided layer showed great uniformity in microstructure and thickness. It is concluded, therefore, that the unit was effective constructed for the purposes for which it was designed

The nanostructured materials over the last decade have been increasing the variety of studies and research applications in many industries. From the understanding and manipulation of nanoscale is possible to obtain high-performance materials. One method, which has been very effective in obtaining of nanostructured composites, is the electrospinning, a technique that uses electrostatic forces to produce fibers from a polymer solution. By understanding and controlling of process conditions, such as solution viscosity, working distance, the velocity of the collector, applied voltage and others conditions, it is possible to obtain fibers in many different morphologies. This work aims to obtain nanostructured composites from polysulfone (PSU) a thermoplastic polymer with high oxidation resistance and good mechanical strength at high temperatures and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that are excellent reinforcements for polymer materials, their mechanical resistance is greater than that of all known materials; using the electrospinning process via polymer solution. Were used polysulfone solutions, n,n-ndimetil acetamide (PSU / DMAc) and this same solution added of CNTs in order to obtain the nanofibers. In both cases were analyzed the effectiveness of the process from the analysis of fiber diameters, rheological behavior and infrared spectroscopy. The results obtained confirmed the efficiency of the electrospinning process to obtain polymeric fibers

This article, which is based on a longitudinal study conducted with a cohort ofoctogenarians, examines downward social comparison and its effectiveness as an adjustment mechanism during the frailty process. First of all, a paradoxical stability of subjective well-being is to be observed: it remains stable over five years notwithstanding the general decline in health. Next, an analysis based on individual health trajectories reveals that downward social comparison is associated with the maintenance of a stable level of well-being, whereas, when it is not associated with well-being, the latter tends to vary.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of enteral nutritional therapy (ENT) in the healing process of pressure ulcers (PU) in adults and the elderly. METHOD A systematic review whose studies were identified through the databases of Cochrane, MEDLINE/PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and manual searches. It included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) without delimiting the period or language of publication, which addressed adults and elderly patients with pressure ulcers in a comparative treatment of enteral nutritional therapy and placebo or between enteral nutritional therapy with different compositions and dosages. RESULTS We included ten studies that considered different interventions. It resulted in more pressure ulcers healed in the groups that received the intervention. The included studies were heterogeneous with regard to patients, the type of intervention, the sample and the follow-up period, all of which made meta-analysis impossible. CONCLUSION Although the enteral nutritional therapy demonstrates a promotion of pressure ulcer healing, sufficient evidence to confirm the hypothesis was not found.

This report shares my efforts in developing a solid unit of instruction that has a clear focus on student outcomes. I have been a teacher for 20 years and have been writing and revising curricula for much of that time. However, most has been developed without the benefit of current research on how students learn and did not focus on what and how students are learning. My journey as a teacher has involved a lot of trial and error. My traditional method of teaching is to look at the benchmarks (now content expectations) to see what needs to be covered. My unit consists of having students read the appropriate sections in the textbook, complete work sheets, watch a video, and take some notes. I try to include at least one hands-on activity, one or more quizzes, and the traditional end-of-unit test consisting mostly of multiple choice questions I find in the textbook. I try to be engaging, make the lessons fun, and hope that at the end of the unit my students get whatever concepts I‘ve presented so that we can move on to the next topic. I want to increase students‘ understanding of science concepts and their ability to connect understanding to the real-world. However, sometimes I feel that my lessons are missing something. For a long time I have wanted to develop a unit of instruction that I know is an effective tool for the teaching and learning of science. In this report, I describe my efforts to reform my curricula using the “Understanding by Design” process. I want to see if this style of curriculum design will help me be a more effective teacher and if it will lead to an increase in student learning. My hypothesis is that this new (for me) approach to teaching will lead to increased understanding of science concepts among students because it is based on purposefully thinking about learning targets based on “big ideas” in science. For my reformed curricula I incorporate lessons from several outstanding programs I‘ve been involved with including EpiCenter (Purdue University), Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), the Master of Science Program in Applied Science Education at Michigan Technological University, and the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL). In this report, I present the methodology on how I developed a new unit of instruction based on the Understanding by Design process. I present several lessons and learning plans I‘ve developed for the unit that follow the 5E Learning Cycle as appendices at the end of this report. I also include the results of pilot testing of one of lessons. Although the lesson I pilot-tested was not as successful in increasing student learning outcomes as I had anticipated, the development process I followed was helpful in that it required me to focus on important concepts. Conducting the pilot test was also helpful to me because it led me to identify ways in which I could improve upon the lesson in the future.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to evaluate the banking and insurance technology curriculum at ten junior colleges in Taiwan. The study focused on curriculum, curriculum materials, instruction, support services, student achievement and job performance. Data was collected from a diverse sample of faculty, students, alumni, and employers. ^ Questionnaires on the evaluation of curriculum at technical junior colleges were developed for use in this specific case. Data were collected from the sample described above and analyzed utilizing ANOVA, T-Tests and crosstabulations. Findings are presented which indicate that there is room for improvement in terms of meeting individual students' needs. ^ Using Stufflebeam's CIPP model for curriculum evaluation it was determined that the curriculum was adequate in terms of the knowledge and skills imparted to students. However, students were dissatisfied with the rigidity of the curriculum and the lack of opportunity to satisfy the individual needs of students. Employers were satisfied with both the academic preparation of students and their on the job performance. ^ In sum, the curriculum of the two-year banking and insurance technology programs of junior college in Taiwan was shown to have served adequately preparing a work force to enter businesses. It is now time to look toward the future and adapt the curriculum and instruction for the future needs of the ever evolving high-tech society. ^

Purpose To compare the process of myelination in the developing optic nerve (ON) of anaemic rats with the subsequent recovery after being fed an iron-recovery diet. Methods In this study, the morphometrical parameters in the ON were assessed by electron microscopy in Wistar rats that were on an iron-deficient diet for 32 days or for 21 days followed by 10 days on an iron-recovery diet. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed using representative electron ultramicrographs. Data were analysed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). When differences were detected, comparisons were made using Tukey`s post hoc test (P<0.05 was considered to be significant). Results Qualitative analysis of the ONs in anaemic and recovered animals showed a higher rate of deformed axons and increased lamellar separation in the myelin sheath when compared with the respective control group. The ON of the anaemic group showed a reduced mean density of myelinated fibres when compared with the control group. The fibre area ratio, axon area ratio, and myelin area ratio of large axons/small axons in the ONs of the control group showed the highest values for the myelin areas, axon areas, and total fibre areas. The control group showed a significantly higher myelin sheath thickness when compared with the anaemic and recovered groups. Conclusions Our data indicate that iron is necessary for maintenance of the ON cell structure, and that morphological damage from iron deficiency is not easily reverted by iron repletion.
