The South Orkney Islands are the exposed part of a continental fragment on the southern limb of the Scotia are. The islands are to a large extent composed of metapelites and metagreywackes of probable Triassic sedimentary age. Deformation related to an accretionary wedge setting, with associated metamorphism from anchizone to the greenschist facies, are of Jurassic age (176-200 Ma). on Powell Island, in the centre of the archipelago, five phases of deformation are recognized. The first three, associated with the main metamorphism, are tentatively correlated with early Jurassic subduction along the Pacific margin of Gondwana. D-4 is a phase of middle to late Jurassic crustal extension associated with uplift. This extension phase may be related to opening of the Rocas Verdes basin in southern Chile, associated with the breakup of Gondwanaland. Upper Jurassic conglomerates cover the metamorphic rocks unconformably. D-5 is a phase of brittle extensional faulting probably associated with Cenozoic opening of the Powell basin west of the archipelago, and with development of the Scotia are.

An apatite fission track study of crystalline rocks underlying sedimentary basins in northeastern Brazil indicate that crustal blocks that occur on opposite sides of a geological fault experienced different thermal histories. Samples collected on the West block yielded corrected fission-track ages from 140 to 375 Ma, whereas samples collected on the East block yielded ages between 90 and 125 Ma. The thermal models suggest that each block experienced two cooling events separated by a heating event at different times. We concluded that the West block moved downward relative to the East block ca. 140 Ma ago, when sediments eroded from the East side were deposited on the West side. This process represents the early stage of sedimentary basin formation and the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean in the region. Downward and upward movements related to heating and cooling events of these crustal blocks at different periods until recent times are proposed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The habitat of the mycelial saprobic form of Paracoccidio ides brasiliensis, which produces the infectious propagula, has not been determined and has proven difficult for mycologists to describe. The fungus has been rarely isolated from the environment, the disease has a prolonged latency period and no outbreaks have been reported. These facts have precluded the adoption of preventive measures to avoid infection. The confirmation of natural infections in nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) with P. brasiliensis, in high frequency and wide geographic distribution, has opened new avenues for the study and understanding of its ecology. Armadillos belong to the order Xenarthra, which has existed in South America ever since the Paleocene Era (65 million years ago), when the South American subcontinent was still a detached land, before the consolidation of what is now known as the American continent. on the other hand, strong molecular evidence suggests that P. brasiliensis and other dimorphic pathogenic fungi - such as Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis and Histoplasma capsulatum - belong to the family Onygenaceae sensu Into (order Onygenales, Ascomycota), which appeared around 150 million years ago.P. brasiliensis ecology and relation to its human host are probably linked to the fungal evolutionary past, especially its long coexistence with and adaptation to animal hosts other than Homo sapiens, of earlier origin. Instead of being a blind alley, the meaning of parasitism for dimorphic pathogenic fungi should be considered as an open two-way avenue, in which the fungus may return to the environment, therefore contributing to preserve its teleomorphic (sexual) and anamorphic (asexual) forms in a defined and protected natural habitat. Guinea pig related rodents possess numerous derived placental characters. We attempt to identify diversity within the visceral yolk sac and its association with the chorioallantoic placenta in three species of caviids, two of them possessing a capsule formed by the decidua that covers the chorioallantoic placenta. The results verify that in early pregnancy all three species have in inverted yolk sac placenta. In advanced pregnancy the species differ: Galea spixii, as representative without a capsule, bear a yolk sac in apposition to the chorioallantoic placenta with signs of exchange activity until term. Galea is similar to other caviomorphs in this respect. In Dasyprocta leporina and Cuniculus paca, the representatives possessing a capsule, the yolk sac endoderm lacks signs of substance exchange. Evidently, the presence of a capsule prevents such ail interaction. The variations established here must be considered if animal models for human placentation are required which have restricted access to the chorioallantoic placenta from the outside. Aims Endometrial cancer is one of the most common cancers in women worldwide, but there is a lack of diagnostic markers for early detection of these tumours. The raf kinase inhibitory protein (RKIP) negatively regulates the Raf/MEK/ERK pathway, and the downregulation of RKIP is associated with tumour progression and metastasis in several human neoplasms. The aim of this study was to assess the expression levels of RKIP in endometrial cancer and determine whether this expression correlates with clinical outcome in these patients. Methods Tissue microarrays constructed using tissue samples from 209 endometrial adenocarcinomas, 49 endometrial polyps and 48 endometrial hyperplasias were analysed for RKIP expression by immunohistochemistry. Results The authors found that RKIP expression decreases significantly during malignant progression of endometrial cancer; it is highly expressed in non-neoplastic tissues (polyps 79.6%; hyperplasias 87.5%) and expressed at very low levels in endometrioid adenocarcinomas (29.7%). No correlations were observed between RKIP expression, clinicopathological data and survival. Conclusion This study demonstrated for the first time that RKIP expression is lost during the carcinogenic evolution of endometrial tumours and that the loss of RKIP expression is associated with a malignant phenotype. Functional studies are needed to address the biological role of RKIP downregulation in endometrial cancer.

This paper reviews the influence of particle size distribution, agglomerates, rearrangement, sintering atmospheres and impurities on the pore evolution of some commonly studied oxides. These factors largely affect sintering mechanisms due to modifications of diffusion coefficients or evaporation-condensation. Very broad particle size distribution leads to grain growth and agglomerates densify first. Rearrangement of particles due to neck asymmetry mainly in the early stage of sintering is responsible for a high rate of densification in the first minutes of sintering by collapse of large pores. Sintering atmospheres play an important role in both densification and pore evolution. The chemical interaction of water molecules with several oxides like MgO, ZnO and SnO2 largely affects surface diffusion. As a consequence, there is an increase in the rates of pore growth and densification for MgO and ZnO and in the rate of pore growth for SnO2. Carbon dioxide does not affect the rate of sintering of MgO but greatly affects both rates of pore growth and densification of ZnO. Oxygen concentration in the atmosphere can especially affect semiconductor oxides but significantly affects the rate of pore growth of SnO2. Impurities like chlorine ions increase the rate of pore growth in MgO due to evaporation of HCl and Mg(OH)Cl, increasing the rate of densification and particle cuboidization. CuO promotes densification in SnO2, and is more effective in dry air. The rate of densification decrease and pore widening are promoted in argon. An inert atmosphere favors SnO2 evaporation due to reduction of CuO. © 1990.

This study investigated the role of the early lactation milk (ELM) on the male reproductive performance and the participation of GnRH on this effect in Wistar rats. Newborn males were divided into three experimental groups: 1) ELM-deprived pups, 2) ELM-deprived pups treated with exogenous GnRH 1, 7, 25, and 31 h after birth, and 3) non-ELM-deprived and without exogenous GnRH. In relation to the other two groups, the ELM-deprived male rats exhibited as adults: reduced fertility, decreased weight of both vas deferens and seminal vesicle, and reduced levels of fructose in the seminal vesicle and prostate gland. We suggest that the intake of ELM during the neonatal period is important to the later sexual development of rats, and that GnRH is somehow involved in such an effect.

Maternal malnutrition was shown to affect early growth and leads to permanent alterations in insulin secretion and sensitivity of offspring. In addition, epidemiological studies showed an association between low birth weight and glucose intolerance in adult life. To understand these interactions better, we investigated the insulin secretion by isolated islets and the early events related to insulin action in the hind-limb muscle of adult rats fed a diet of 17% protein (control) or 6% protein [low (LP) protein] during fetal life, suckling and after weaning, and in rats receiving 6% protein during fetal life and suckling followed by a 17% protein diet after weaning (recovered). The basal and maximal insulin secretion by islets from rats fed LP diet and the basal release by islets from recovered rats were significantly lower than that of control rats. The dose-response curves to glucose of islets from LP and recovered groups were shifted to the right compared to control islets, with the half-maximal response (EC 50) occurring at 16.9 ± 1.3, 12.4 ± 0.5 and 8.4 ± 0.1 mmol/L, respectively. The levels of insulin receptor, as well as insulin receptor substrate-1 and phosphorylation and the association between insulin receptor substrate-1 and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase were greater in rats fed a LP diet than in control rats. In recovered rats, these variables were not significantly different from those of the other two groups. These results suggest that glucose homeostasis is maintained in LP and recovered rats by an increased sensitivity to insulin as a result of alterations in the early steps of the insulin signal transduction pathway.

Three experimental protocols were carried out with the aim of evaluating the role of protein restriction on the progression of the established adriamycin-induced nephropathy, and whether the protective effect of the diet persists after the diet is discontinued. The effect of a low protein diet (LPD) was studied for 6 weeks in protocol 1, 16 weeks in protocol 2 and for 28 weeks in protocol 3. In protocol 3, one group (LL) received LPD and another (NN) was given a normal protein diet (NPD). A third group (LN) received LPD for 16 weeks and then NPD for 12 weeks and a fourth group (NL) was fed NPD for 16 weeks and then LPD for 12 weeks. In protocol I the tubulo- interstitial index (TILl) of rats on LPD (Md = 2, P25 = 0.0; P75 = 3.5) after six weeks, was smaller than that of the animals on NPD (Md = 6.0; P25 = 3.0; P75 = 8.0; p < 0.05). In protocol 2, the group taking LPD presented an area of interstitial fibrosis (IF) (Md= 0.5%, P25 0.2%; P75 = 1.9%) smaller than that of the NPD group (Md = 6.8%; P25 = 5.2%; P75 = 7.1%; P < 0.05). No significant difference in the area of glomerulosclerosis (GSA) was observed between the animals on LPD (Md = 0.0%; P25 = 0.0%, P75 = 0.0%) and NPD (Md = 0.37%; P25 = 02% P75 = 1.25%; p > 0.05). In protocol 3, the group LL showed GSA (Md = 1.3%; P25 0.6%, P75 = 2.5%) and IF (Md = 3.60/0; P25 = 1.6%; P75 = 5.9%) smaller that those of LN (GSA Md = 10.1%; P25 = 6.6%; P75 = 14.8%; IF; Md = 17.3%; P25 = 14.1%; P75 = 24,5%), NL (GSA: Md = 9.1%; P25 = 5,8%; P75 = 11.7%; IF; Md = 25.0%; P25 = 20.4%; P75 = 30%), and NN (GSA: Md = 6. 75%; P25 = 4.9%; P75 = 11.7%; IF: Md = 20.9%; P25 = 16.2%; P75 = 32.4%). In conclusion, in order to be effective, LPD must be introduced early and maintained for a long period of tune.

The karyotypes of 15 species of Termitidae were analyzed. All of them are X1X2Y1Y2 (male) and X1X1X2X2 (female). With the exception of Neocapritermes opacus with 2n=40, the remaining species are 2n=42 in both sexes, a karyotype similar to those described for African species by other authors. The sex determining mechanism probably originated before the split up of Gondwanaland, in a single event, early during the karyotype evolution of the family Termitidae by means of a reciprocal translocation that involved the primitive Y and a chromosome from an autosomal pair.

Development of the periodontium involves a series of complex steps that result in the formation of root dentine, cementum, bone and fibres of the ligament. These precisely controlled and timed events require the participation of the enamel organ derived epithelial cells of Hertwig's (HRS) and ectomesenchymal cells of the dental follicle. These events involve rapid turnover of the tissues and cells, including disappearance of epithelial cells of HRS. Thus, it seemed likely to us that programmed cell death (apoptosis) may play a role in the development of the periodontium. Fragments of first molars, obtained from 14- and 29-day-old rats, were fixed in glutaraldehyde-formaldehyde and processed for light and electron microscopy. For the TUNEL method for detection of apoptosis, specimens were fixed in 4% formaldehyde and embedded in paraffin. Results confirmed that epithelial cells of HRS maintain a close relationship with the forming dentine root, and that they may become trapped in the dentino-cemental junction. Some of the epithelial cells exhibited ultrastructural features which are consistent with the interpretation that they were undergoing programmed cell death, i.e. apoptosis. Periodontal fibroblast-like cells showed typical images of apoptosis and engulfed apoptotic bodies. TUNEL positive structures were present in all corresponding regions. It seems therefore that apoptosis of epithelial cells of HRS and fibroblast-like cells of the periodontal ligament constitutes an integral part of the developmental process of the tissues of the periodontium. A general survey of the occurrence of morphologically differentiated sex chromosomes in the neotropical freshwater fishes is presented. The total number of 32 occurrences involving simple XX-XY and ZZ-ZW, and multiple X1X2Y, XY1Y2 and ZW1W2 sex chromosome systems is described, with comments on the aspects of sex chromosome evolution in this fish fauna. The occurrence of different sex chromosome systems in related species of the same genus, or in different populations of the same nominal species, involving male and sometimes female heterogamety, and differences in the molecular composition of sex-linked heterochromatin, are considered as indicative of the early stage of sex chromosomes evolution in fish.

Recent structural investigations and geochronological studies of rocks from the Médio Coreaú domain in the NW part of northeast Brazil's Borborema Province provide important constraints on the tectonic evolution of the region both preceeding and during the assembly of West Gondwana. Field observations of structural features and fabrics have revealed the presence of four distinct deformational phases in the MCD: D1, D2, D3 and D4. Only the early Paleoproterozoic gneisses record the D1 tectonic event and its preservation is cryptic owing to strong overprinting by the subsequent tectonic phases. The D2, D3 and D4 events affected younger supracrustal rocks and Neoproterzoic magmatic units, and U-Pb geochronological constraints show that all of these tectonic phases represent deformational events that occurred during Brasiliano collision between the West African craton and the NW part of the Borborema Province. The D2 phase, lasting between ca. 622 and 591 Ma, represents a frontal collision stage, which generated NW verging thrust-nappe systems, low-angle foliation, high-grade metamorphism and crustal anatexis. Transition to a strike-slip regime (D3) occurred at around 591 Ma when the region entered a phase of escape tectonics. During this time, the motion of crustal blocks towards NE and E was accommodated along numerous anastomosing shear zones. Syntectonic emplacement of granitoid plutons took place in transtensional domains of the shear zone system. The intrusion of late tectonic granitoids and rapid uplift and cooling of the orogen around 560 Ma as a result of D4 transpressional movements marked the end of the D3 transcurrent regime. These findings show that only the early Paleoproterozoic gneisses in the Médio Coreaú domain are polycyclic in nature. Rather than representing distinct orogenic events, the D2, D3 and D4 tectonic phases are a manifestation of progressive deformational events that developed in response to changes in the regional stress field during convergence and collision between the Borborema Province and its surrounding cratons.
