A group of nine pingos occurs in the valley of a glacial meltwater river. The pingos rise from a plain of low-center polygons. Some pingos have a typical cone shape, but others are linear, apparently centered on ice wedges . The occurrence of most pingos at the junction of oversize ice wedge polygon ridges suggests that the injection of water and the segregation of ice occurred along pathways provided by the ice wedges.

Toiling children in India : the gender dimension

Child labour in several low income households is rather pursued for gaining experience and at times for meagre incomes, which are possibly spent on household food expenditure. Though the contribution made by the child labour to the overall wellbeing does not turn out to be substantial, without child labour these households would have been much worse off than the households which can afford not to have child labour. The probability of working is higher for a male child compared to a girl child. This is because the girl children are often engaged in household activities and even when they are engaged in income earning jobs they are shown as helpers. Parents' income as such may not be having a positive impact on child's education rather it is the educational level of the parents which matters in determining whether the child would go to school and continue her/his education. To substantiate the gender bias, the probability of falling ill among the girl children is found to be higher compared to the boys. Parents' educational attainments beyond a certain level again tend to reduce the probability of falling ill.

The environment dimension of food supply chain analysis

The paper reviews relevant literature studying the environmental impacts of food supply chain from production to each stage throughout the supply chain. With limited data and information, to better understand these impacts, a concrete example of the tea supply chain in China is provided. The tea supply chain is analyzed from the environmental prospective, with potential pollutants being identified at each stage of the supply chain. As an example of the food supply chain in a developing country, some unique features of the developing economies are taken into consideration when concluding the implications.

The PSE-3D instability analysis methodology for flows depending strongly on two and weakly on the third spatial dimension

The present contribution discusses the development of a PSE-3D instability analysis algorithm, in which a matrix forming and storing approach is followed. Alternatively to the typically used in stability calculations spectral methods, new stable high-order finitedifference-based numerical schemes for spatial discretization 1 are employed. Attention is paid to the issue of efficiency, which is critical for the success of the overall algorithm. To this end, use is made of a parallelizable sparse matrix linear algebra package which takes advantage of the sparsity offered by the finite-difference scheme and, as expected, is shown to perform substantially more efficiently than when spectral collocation methods are used. The building blocks of the algorithm have been implemented and extensively validated, focusing on classic PSE analysis of instability on the flow-plate boundary layer, temporal and spatial BiGlobal EVP solutions (the latter necessary for the initialization of the PSE-3D), as well as standard PSE in a cylindrical coordinates using the nonparallel Batchelor vortex basic flow model, such that comparisons between PSE and PSE-3D be possible; excellent agreement is shown in all aforementioned comparisons. Finally, the linear PSE-3D instability analysis is applied to a fully three-dimensional flow composed of a counter-rotating pair of nonparallel Batchelor vortices.

Time Evolution of the Fractal Dimension in Turbulent Plumes

Turbulent mixing is a very important issue in the study of geophysical phenomena because most fluxes arising in geophysics fluids are turbulent. We study turbulent mixing due to convection using a laboratory experimental model with two miscible fluids of different density with an initial top heavy density distribution. The fluids that form the initial unstable stratification are miscible and the turbulence will produce molecular mixing. The denser fluid comes into the lighter fluid layer and it generates several forced plumes which are gravitationally unstable. As the turbulent plumes develop, the denser fluid comes into contact with the lighter fluid layer and the mixing process grows. Their development is caused by the lateral interaction between these plumes at the complex fractal surface between the dense and light fluids

Correlation Dimension of Complex Networks

We propose a new measure to characterize the dimension of complex networks based on the ergodic theory of dynamical systems. This measure is derived from the correlation sum of a trajectory generated by a random walker navigating the network, and extends the classical Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm to the context of complex networks. The method is validated with reliable results for both synthetic networks and real-world networks such as the world air-transportation network or urban networks, and provides a computationally fast way for estimating the dimensionality of networks which only relies on the local information provided by the walkers.

Development in one dimension: the rapid differentiation of Dictyostelium discoideum in glass capillaries.

When Dictyostelium discoideum cells are drawn into a fine glass capillary, they rapidly begin the first steps toward the formation of prestalk and prespore zones. Some of the events occur within a minute or two, whereas others follow later. The cells in the front segment are actively motile and those in the hind segment are passive. The volumes of the segments are proportional for different-sized cell masses, and those proportions are the same as those found in normal slugs. When the cells are stained with the vital dye neutral red, the anterior zone becomes darker simultaneously with the formation of the division line. Green fluorescent protein expressed from a stalk-specific promoter is synthesized mostly in the anterior end. Later, this capillary prestalk zone shows a sharp increase in alkaline phosphatase activity, which is known to be characteristic of prestalk cells.

Existential dissonance : a dimension of inauthenticity

This paper will initially review integral concepts found within Heidegger’s understanding of existence or being - namely the dialectic between authentic and inauthentic living, and by extension, existential guilt, anxiety, and regret. Next, I will discuss a particular dimension of inauthenticity found at the intersection of existential guilt and regret, termed existential dissonance. This term, adapted from Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance will serve to illuminate several clinical phenomena. To ground this concept further, I will provide two case examples that further express and clarify this concept.
