Photodynamic therapy of deep or nodular skin tumours is currently limited by the poor tissue penetration of the porphyrin precursor 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). In this study, silicon microneedle arrays were used, for the first time, to enhance skin penetration of ALA in vitro and in vivo. Puncturing excised murine skin with 6x7 arrays of microneedles 270 mum in height, with a diameter of 240 mum at the base and an interspacing of 750 mum led to a significant increase in transdermal delivery of ALA released from a bioadhesive patch containing 19 mg ALA cm(-2). Microneedle puncture enhanced ALA delivery to the upper regions of excised porcine skin but, at mean depths of 1.875 mm, ALA concentrations were similar to control values, possibly reflecting binding of ALA by tissue components. However, and importantly, in vivo experiments using nude mice showed that microneedle puncture could reduce application time and ALA dose required to induce high levels of the photosensitiser protoporphyrin IX in skin. This clearly has implications for clinical practice, as shorter application times would mean improved patient and clinician convenience and also that more patients could be treated in the same session. As ALA is expensive and degrades rapidly via a second order reaction, reducing the required dose is also a notable advantage.

The Amor-type near-Earth Asteroid (10302) 1989 ML has an “Earth-like” orbit (period 1.44 yr, eccentricity 0.14, inclination 4.4°), therefore the energy required to reach it from the Earth is relatively small making it a very attractive target for rendezvous missions. We have observed 1989 ML in the thermal infrared using the Spitzer Space Telescope, and compared these data with optical and near-infrared observations. The Spitzer results imply a diameter of 0.28±0.05 km and a geometric albedo of 0.37±0.15; together with the reflectance spectrum they are consistent with the relatively rare E classification.

This paper reports a study carried out to assess the impact of the use of self-compacting concrete (SCC) on bond and interfacial properties around steel reinforcement in practical concrete element. The pull-out tests were carried out to determine bond strength between reinforcing steel bar and concrete, and the depth-sensing nano-indentation technique was used to evaluate the elastic modulus and micro-strength of the interracial transition zone (ITZ) around steel reinforcement. The bond and interracial properties around deformed steel bars in different SCC mixes with strength grades of 35 MPa and 60 MPa (C35, C60) were examined together with those in conventional vibrated reference concrete with the same strength grades. The results showed that the maximum bond strength decreased when the diameter of the steel bar increased from 12 to 20 mm. The normalised bond strengths of the SCC mixes were found to be about 10-40% higher than those of the reference mixes for both bar diameters (12 and 20 mm). The study of the interfacial properties revealed that the elastic modulus and the micro-strength of the ITZ were lower on the bottom side of a horizontal steel bar than on the top side, particularly for the vibrated reference concrete. The difference of ITZ properties between top and bottom side of the horizontal steel bar appeared to be less pronounced for the SCC mixes than for the corresponding reference mixes.

Template electrodeposition has been used to prepare a wide range of nanostructures but has generally been restricted to aqueous electrolytes. We report the deposition of silver nanowires in a commercial nuclear track-etched polycarbonate template from the nonaqueous ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6]) using silver electrochemically dissolved from the anode. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the nanowires have a very high aspect ratio with an average diameter of 80 nm and length of 5 mu m. Ionic liquid electrolytes should greatly extend the range of metals that can be electrodeposited as nanowires using templates.

A method using a combination of ball milling, acid hydrolysis, and ultrasound was developed to obtain a high yield of cellulose nanofibers from flax fibers and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposites were prepared with these additives by a solution-casting technique. The cellulose nanofibers and nanocomposite films that were produced were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X- ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Nanofibers derived from MCC were on average approximately 8 nm in diameter and 111 nm in length. The diameter of the cellulose nanofibers produced from flax fibers was approximately 9 nm, and the length was 141 nm. A significant enhancement of the thermal and mechanical properties was achieved with a small addition of cellulose nanofibers to the polymer matrix. Interestingly, the flax nanofibers had the same reinforcing effects as MCC nanofibers in the matrix. Dynamic mechanical analysis results indicated that the use of cellulose nanofibers (acid hydrolysis) induced a mechanical percolation phenomenon leading to outstanding and unusual mechanical properties through the formation of a rigid filler network in the PVA matrix. X-ray diffraction showed that there was no significant change in the crystallinity of the PVA matrix with the incorporation of cellulose nanofibers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This study aimed to test these hypotheses: cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE) is expressed in a human artery, it generates hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and H2S relaxes a human artery. H2S is produced endogenously in rat arteries from cysteine by CSE. Endogenously produced H2S dilates rat resistance arteries. Although CSE is expressed in rat arteries, its presence in human blood vessels has not been described. In this study, we showed that both CSE mRNA, determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and CSE protein, determined by Western blotting, apparently occur in the human internal mammary artery (internal thoracic artery). Artery homogenates converted cysteine to H2S, and the H2S production was inhibited by DL-propargylglycine, an inhibitor of CSE. We also showed that H2S relaxes phenylephrine-precontracted human internal mammary artery at higher concentrations but produces contraction at low concentrations. The latter contractions are stronger in acetylcholine-prerelaxed arteries, suggesting inhibition of nitric oxide action. The relaxation is partially blocked by glibenclamide, an inhibitor of K-ATP channels. The present results indicate that CSE protein is expressed in human arteries, that human arteries synthesize H2S, and that higher concentrations of H2S relax human arteries, in part by opening K-ATP channels. Low concentrations of H2S contract the human internal mammary artery, possibly by reacting with nitric oxide to form an inactive nitrosothiol. The possibility that CSE, and the H2S it generates, together play a physiological role in regulating the diameter of arteries in humans, as has been demonstrated in rats, should be considered.

Vertically aligned ZnO nanowires (NWs) with a length of 1.5-10 mu m and a mean diameter of ca. 150 nm were grown by chemical vapour deposition onto a c-oriented ZnO seed layer which was deposited by atomic layer deposition on Si substrates. The substrates were then spin-coated with an ethanol solution containing Pd nanoparticles with an average size of 2.7 and 4.5 nm. A homogeneous distribution of the Pd nanoparticles on ZnO NWs has been obtained using both Pd particle series. The catalytic activity of the ZnO NWs and Pd/ZnO NWs catalysts was measured in the semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol at 303-343 K and a pressure of 2-10 bar. The effect of the solvent used on the catalytic performance of the Pd/ZnO NWs catalyst was studied. The Pd/ZnO catalysts showed alkene selectivity of up to 95% at an alkyne conversion of 99%. A kinetic model is proposed to explain the activity and selectivity of the ZnO support and Pd/ZnO catalysts.

The kinetics of the liquid-phase hydrogenation of citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal) on Au/TiO2 and Pt-Sn/TiO2 thin films was studied in the temperature range 313-353 K and citral concentrations of 0.25-10.0 mol m(-3). The thin films were deposited onto the inner walls of silica capillaries with internal diameter of 250 mu m. First-order dependence on hydrogen pressure and near zero order dependence on citral concentration were observed for the initial rate of citral hydrogenation over the Pt-Sn/TiO2 and Au/TiO2 thin films. The Au/TiO2 catalyst prevents citronellal formation. The highest yield of unsaturated alcohols was obtained on the Pt-Sn/TiO2 film at a reaction temperature of 343 K, liquid residence time of 30 min and a citral conversion of 99%. In this paper, a model is presented that describes the pressure drop of gas-liquid Taylor flow in round capillaries with a channel diameter typically less than 1 mm. The analysis of Bretherton (J Fluid Mech 10:166-188, 1961) for the pressure drop over a single gas bubble for vanishing liquid film thickness is extended to include a non-negligible liquid film thickness using the analysis of Aussillous and Qu,r, (Phys Fluids 12(10):2367-2371, 2000). This result is combined with the Hagen-Poiseuille equation for liquid flow using a mass balance-based Taylor flow model previously developed by the authors (Warnier et al. in Chem Eng J 135S:S153-S158, 2007). The model presented in this paper includes the effect of the liquid slug length on the pressure drop similar to the model of Kreutzer et al. (AIChE J 51(9):2428-2440, 2005). Additionally, the gas bubble velocity is taken into account, thereby increasing the accuracy of the pressure drop predictions compared to those of the model of Kreutzer et al. Experimental data were obtained for nitrogen-water Taylor flow in a round glass channel with an inner diameter of 250 mu m. The capillary number Ca (gl) varied between 2.3 x 10(-3) and 8.8 x 10(-3) and the Reynolds number Re (gl) varied between 41 and 159. The presented model describes the experimental results with an accuracy of +/- 4% of the measured values.

In the present paper, we introduce a notion of a style representing abstract, complex objects having characteristics that can be represented as structured objects. Furthermore, we provide some mathematical properties of such styles. As a main result, we present a novel approach to perform a meaningful comparative analysis of such styles by defining and using graph-theoretic measures. We compare two styles by comparing the underlying feature sets representing sets of graph structurally. To determine the structural similarity between the underlying graphs, we use graph similarity measures that are computationally efficient. More precisely, in order to compare styles, we map each feature set to a so-called median graph and compare the resulting median graphs. As an application, we perform an experimental study to compare special styles representing sets of undirected graphs and present numerical results thereof. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Organic gels have been synthesized by sol–gel polycondensation of phenol (P) and formaldehyde (F) catalyzed by sodium carbonate (C). The effect of synthesis parameters such as phenol/catalyst ratio (P/C), solvent exchange liquid and drying method, on the porous structure of the gels have been investigated. The total and mesopore volumes of the PF gels increased with increasing P/C ratio in the range of P/C B 8, after this both properties started to decrease with P/C ratio for P/C[8 and the gel with P/C = 8 showed the highest total and mesopore volumes of 1.281 and 1.279 cm3 g-1 respectively. The gels prepared by freeze drying possessed significantly higher porosities than the vacuum dried gels. The pore volume and average pore diameter of the freeze dried gels were significantly higher than those of the vacuum dried gels. T-butanol emerged as the preferred solvent for the removal of water from the PF hydrogel prior to drying, as significantly higher pore volumes and specific surface areas were obtained in the corresponding dried gels. The results showed that freeze drying with t-butanol and lower P/C ratios were favourable conditions for the synthesis of highly mesoporous phenol–formaldehyde gels.

The dynamics of the focusing of laser-driven ion beams produced from concave solid targets was studied. Most of the ion beam energy is observed to converge at the center of the cylindrical targets with a spot diameter of 30 mu m, which can be very beneficial for applications requiring high beam energy densities. Also, unbalanced laser irradiation does not compromise the focusability of the beam. However, significant filamentation occurs during the focusing, potentially limiting the localization of the energy deposition region by these beams at focus. These effects could impact the applicability of such high-energy density beams for applications, e. g., in proton-driven fast ignition.

The results of a study of the oxidative mineralisation of 4-CP by oxygen, sensitised by thin films of Degussa P25 TiO2, are reported. The films are used under conditions in which the kinetics of photomineralisation are independent of mass transfer effects and stable towards repeated irradiation. Using a TiO2 film, the process goes through the same mechanism as a TiO2 dispersion, generating the same intermediates, namely: 4-chlorocatechol and hydroquinone. The kinetics of photomineralisation show clear differences between a TiO2 film and a dispersion. With TiO2 films the initial rate of photomineralisation is strongly dependent upon photocatalyst loading, (units; g dm(-3)) reaching a distinct maximum, which appears to be associated with the formation of a monolayer of aggregated particles - the diameter of the aggregated particles is estimated as 0.44 mu m. A simple 2D model is presented to help illustrate the features of such a system. With TiO2 dispersions the rate usually reaches a plateau at ca. 0.5 g dm(-3) of TiO2. For TiO2 films the initial rate depends directly upon the incident light intensity, implying that the photocatalytically active particles are under low illumination conditions, partially shielded by the other particles making up each aggregated particle. In contrast, with TiO2 dispersions R-i depends upon I-0.64, implying that the different light intensities used spanned both the high (R(i)proportional to I-1/2) and low (R(i)proportional to I) intensity kinetic regions. The kinetics of photomineralisation of 4-CP, sensitised by TiO2 films obey the same Langmuir-Hinshelwood expressions as found in most semiconductor photocatalyst work conducted with TiO2 dispersions. However, in a study of the variation R-i as a function of [4-CP] and [O-2] the values for the maximum rates were larger, and those for the apparent Langmuir adsorption coefficients were smaller, than those found for TiO2 dispersions. Thermal management as a method of heightening performance in miniaturized electronic devices using microchannel heat sinks has recently become of interest to researchers and the industry. One of the current challenges is to design heat sinks with uniform flow distribution. A number of experimental studies have been conducted to seek appropriate designs for microchannel heat sinks. However, pursuing this goal experimentally can be an expensive endeavor. The present work investigates the effect of cross-links on adiabatic two-phase flow in an array of parallel channels. It is carried out using the three dimensional mixture model from the computational fluid dynamics software, FLUENT 6.3. A straight channel and two cross-linked channel models were simulated. The cross-links were located at 1/3 and 2/3 of the channel length, and their widths were one and two times larger than the channel width. All test models had 45 parallel rectangular channels, with a hydraulic diameter of 1.59 mm. The results showed that the trend of flow distribution agrees with experimental results. A new design, with cross-links incorporated, was proposed and the results showed a significant improvement of up to 55% on flow distribution compared with the standard straight channel configuration without a penalty in the pressure drop. Further discussion about the effect of cross-links on flow distribution, flow structure, and pressure drop was also documented.

The application of blown jet vortex generators to control flow separation in a diffuser with an opening angle of 10° has been studied using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Fluent 6™. Experimental data is available for the uncontrolled flow in the diffuser. The section of the duct upstream of the diffuser has a height H equal to 15 mm; its length and breadth are 101H and 41H respectively; the diffuser has an expansion ratio of 4.7:1. Fully developed flow is achieved upstream of the diffuser. Pipes of diameters equal to 1.5%, 2.5% and 5% of H were considered; pitch angle was constant at 45° and yaw angle was fixed at 60°; velocity ratio was varied from 1.7 to 8.0; both co-rotating and counter-rotating arrays were studied. The best results were obtained with a counter-rotating array of generators with a hole diameter of 5% of H and a velocity ratio of 3.7.
