Titanate nanotubes (TiNTs) were obtained by hydrothermal treatment of anatase powder in aqueous NaOH solution and then modified with 2,9,16,23-tertracarboxyl phthalocyanine copper(H) (CuPc). This hybrid organic inorganic nanoscopic system was characterized by X-ray diffraction, microscopy, and spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of pure and modified TiNTs revealed multiwall structures with an average outer diameter of 9 nm and a length of several hundred nanometers. The tubular morphology of the TiNTs was covered with CuPc-film. The amount of CuPc adsorbed onto the TiNTs was quantified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Using the same technique and spin-trapping methodology, the photogeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the TiNTs was systematically investigated. A drastic quenching of photoactivity was observed in the CuPc/TiNT hybrid system. Electron transfer from excited CuPc states to the TiNT conduction band followed by electron recombination may be the cause of this quenching.

Two porous mixed valent diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate compounds have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Crystalline solids of [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl] center dot 3.5H(2)O (tere=terephthalate) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl] center dot 1.5H(2)O (adip=adipate) consist of extended chains in which polymeric layers of multiply metal-metal bonded [Ru(2)](5+) cores are bridged by dicarboxylate ligands in paddlewheel type geometries. Units of [Ru(2)(dicarboxylate)(2)](n)(+) are linked by axial bridging chloride ions generating three-dimensional networks. The polymers loose non-bonded water molecules at low temperatures but do not undergo thermal decomposition below 280-300 degrees C. Both of compounds exhibit high BET surface areas, [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl]: 235 m(2) g(-1) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl]: 281 m(2) g(-1), and occlude similar numbers of mol of N(2) per mol of metal. The terephthalate ligand generated an organized structure with supermicropores (total pore size of 0.24 cm(3) g(-1)) while the adipate ligand led to a mesoporous structure (total pore sizes of 0.47 cm(3) g(-1)) for the corresponding diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate polymers. We have analysed the effect of spin contamination in the wavefunction of HOOO. At least, two solutions can be found for the HF wavefunction. One, lower in energy, presents a high spin contamination and gives qualitatively incorrect structural parameters. On the other hand, the less contaminated HF reference gives structural parameters that are in better agreement with experiment, and positive spin densities on all atoms. Some of the problems described during previous investigations of HOOO can now be traced to problems in the HF reference. For the first time we report a CCSD(T) estimation of the structure of HOOO cis employing a HF reference with small spin contamination. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The use of whole cells of micro-organisms to bring about the biotransformation of an organic compound offers a number of advantages, but problems caused by enzymatic Promiscuity may be encountered upon With Substrates hearing more than one functional group. A one-pot screening method, in which whole fungal cells were incubated with a Mixture of 4-rnethylcyclohexanone I and phenyl methyl Sulfide 2, has been employed to determine the chemoselectivity of various biocatalysts. The hyphomycetes, Aspergillus terreus CCT 3320 and A. terreus URM 3571, catalysed the oxidation of 2 accompanied by the reduction of I to 4-methylcyclohexanol 1a and, for strain A. terreus CCT 3320, the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of 1. The Basidomycetes, Trametes versicolor CCB 202, Pycnoporus sanguineus CCB 501 and Trichaptum byssogenum CCB 203, catalysed the oxidation of 2 and the reduction 1, but no Baeyer-Villiger reaction products were detected. In contrast. Trametes rigida CCB 285 catalysed the biotransformation of 1 to 1a, exclusively, in the absence of any detectable Sulfide oxidation reactions. The chemoselective reduction Of (+/-)-2-(phenylthio)cyclohexanone 3 by T. rigida CCB 285 afforded exclusively the (+)-cis-(1R,2S) and (+)-trans-(1S,2S) diastereoisomers of 2-(phenylthio)cyclohexan-1-ol 3a in moderate yields (13% and 27%, respectively) and high enantiomeric excesses (>98%). Chemoselective screening for the reduction of a ketone and/or the oxidation Of a Sulfide group in one pot by whole cells of micro-organisms represents an attractive technique with applications in the development of synthesis of complex molecule hearing different functional groups. In this work, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of pyridine (py) on thin films of Co and Ni electrodeposited on an Ag electrode activated by oxidation-reduction cycles (ORC) are presented. The SERS spectra from the thin films were compared to those of py on activated bare transition metal electrodes. It was verified that the SERS spectra of py on 3 monolayers (ML)-thick films of Ni and Co presented only bands assignable to the py adsorbed on transition metal surfaces. It was also observed that even for 50 ML-thick transition metal films, the py SERS intensity was ca. 40% of the intensity from the 3 ML-thick films. The relative intensities of the SERS bands depended on the thickness of the films, and for films thicker than 7 ML for Co and 9 ML for Ni they were very similar to those of the bare transition metal electrodes. The transition metal thin films over Ag activated electrodes presented SERS intensities 3 orders of magnitude higher than the ones from bare transition metal electrodes. These films are more suitable to study the adsorption of low Raman cross-section molecules than are ORC-activated transition metal electrodes.

The synthesis and characterization of lanthanide(III) citrates with stoichiometries 1:1 and 2:3; [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O], Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu are reported. L stands for (C6O7H5)(3-) and LH for (C6O7H6)(2-). Infrared absorption spectra of both series evidence coordination of carboxylate groups through symmetric bridges or chelation. X-ray powder patterns show the amorphous character of [LnL center dot xH(2)O]. The compounds [Ln(2)LH(3)center dot 2H(2)O] are crystalline and isomorphous. Emission spectra of Eu compounds suggest C-2v symmetry for the coordination polyhedron of [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and C-4v for [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O]. Thermal analyses (TG-DTG-DTA) were carried out for both series. The thermal analysis patterns of the two series are quite different and both fit in a 4-step model of thermal decomposition, with lanthanide oxides as final products.

The minimum energy path along the lowest-lying pi pi* excited state of 2-aminopurine was calculated to elucidate the mechanisms of radiationless decay and emission in water. The sequential Monte Carlo quantum mechanics approach with a multiconfigurational and perturbative description of the wave function was employed to compute the minimum, transition state, and conical intersection. It was found that the barrier in the potential energy surface to access the conical intersection funnel increases in aqueous environment, making the system prone to enlarge the emission yield. These results rationalize the observed enhancement of emission in 2-aminopurine upon increasing of the solvent polarity. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work deals with the structural and vibrational characterization of PANI nanofibers prepared through interfacial polymerization using different concentrations of HCl aqueous solution. The results were compared to those obtained by PANI prepared through the conventional route. X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques showed that high concentrations of HCl solutions used in the preparation of the PANI nanofibers reduce their crystallinity. The increase of regions with granular morphology was also observed in the scanning electron microscopy images. The changes in the resonance Raman spectra from 200 to 500 cm(-1), FTIR spectra, and the EPR data of the PANI nanofibers reveal an increase in the torsion angles of C-ring-N-C-ring segments owing the formation of bipolarons in the PANI backbone higher than the PANI samples prepared by conventional route.

This paper demonstrates the application of thermal analysis in compatibility and stability studies between it ACE inhibitor (enalapril maleate) and excipients. The results have helped to elucidate the reason of a stability problem observed (luring the storage of enalapril maleate tablets. Incompatibility between enalapril maleate and colloidal silicon dioxide was detected. Besides, it was confirmed that the reaction between enalapril maleate and NaHCO3 increases the thermal stability of the drug. This Study Supports the importance of using thermoanalytical methods in the development of pharmaceuticals.

Accurate potential energy curves, dissociation energies and spectroscopic constants for several low-lying doublet and quartet electronic states of CaAl were investigated using the CASSCF/MRCI methodology, and the cc-pVQZ basis set. Our results represent an improvement over a previous theoretical description, and also characterizes new higher excited states not previously investigated, thus confirming the assignment of four excited states investigated experimentally. With the theoretical transition moment functions, transition probabilities and radiative lifetimes were estimated via Einstein spontaneous emission coefficients. (c) 2008 Elsevier B. V. The electronic structure and chemical bonding of the ground and low-lying Lambda - S and Omega states of Ta(2) were investigated at the multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory (CASSCF//CASPT2) level. The ground state of Ta(2) is computed to be a X(3)Sigma(-)(g) state (R(e) = 2.120 angstrom, omega(e) = 323 cm(-1), and D(e) = 4.65 eV), with two low-lying singlet states close to it (a(1) Sigma(+)(g) : T(e) = 409 cm(-1), R(e) = 2.131 angstrom, and omega(e) = 313 cm(-1); b(1) Gamma(g): T(e) = 1, 038 cm(-1), R(e) = 2.127 angstrom, and omega(e) = 316 cm(-1)). These electronic states are derived from the same electronic configuration: vertical bar 13 sigma(2)(g)14 sigma(2)(g)7 delta(2)(g)13 pi(4)(u)>. The effective bond order of the X(3) Sigma(-)(g) state is 4.52, which indicates that the Ta atoms are bound by a quintuple chemical bond. The a(1) Sigma(+)(g) state interacts strongly with the X(3)Sigma(-)(g) g ground state by a second-order spin-orbit interaction, giving rise to the (1)0(g)(+) (ground state) (dominated by the X(3)Sigma(-)(g) Lambda - S ground state) and (9)0(g)(+) (dominated by the a(1) Sigma(+)(g) Lambda - S state) Omega states. These results are in line with those reported for the group 5B homonuclear transition metal diatomics. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem 111: 1306-1315, 2011

The adsorption of DPKSH onto Amberlite XAD-2 (styrene resin) and XAD-7 (acrylic ester resin) has been investigated, at (25 +/- 1)degrees C and pH 4.7. The experimental equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models. These three models provide a very good fit for both resins and the respective constants K(L), K(F), and K(DR) were calculated. For the same DPKSH concentration interval, the minimum time of contact for adsorption maximum at XAD-7 was smaller than at XAD-2 and the maximum amount of DPKSH adsorbed per gram of XAD-2 is smaller than at XAD-7. The investigation indicates that the mean sorption energy (E) characterizes a physical adsorption and the surfaces of both resins are energetically heterogeneous. The constants obtained in these studied systems were correlated and compared with those obtained for the silica gel/DPKSH system. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc.

The mechanism and the energy profile of the gas-phase reaction that mimics esterification under acidic conditions have been investigated at different levels of theory. These reactions are known to proceed with rate constants close to the collision limit in the gas-phase and questions have been raised as to whether the typical addition-elimination mechanism via a tetrahedral intermediate can explain the ease of these processes. Because these reactions are common to many organic and biochemical processes it is important to understand the intrinsic reactivity of these systems. Our calculations at different levels of theory reveal that a stepwise mechanism via a tetrahedral species is characterized by energy barriers that are inconsistent with the experimental results. For the thermoneutral exchange between protonated acetic acid and water and the exothermic reaction of protonated acetic acid and methanol our calculations show that these reactions proceed initially by a proton shuttle between the carbonyl oxygen and the hydroxy oxygen of acetic acid mediated by water, or methanol, followed by displacement at the acylium ion center. These findings suggest that the reactions in the gas-phase should be viewed as an acylium ion transfer reaction. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem 111: 1596-1606, 2011

A series of organoselenium amines have been synthesized and submitted to the enzymatic kinetic resolution by acetylation mediated by CAL-B (Novozym 435) to give the corresponding chiral amides in an enantiomerically pure form. After evaluating the appropriate lipase, solvent, temperature, and lipase/substrate ratio in the kinetic resolution, the chiral organoselenium amides were obtained with enantiomeric excess of up to 99%. The effect of adding SO(2) on the structure and dynamics of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (BMIBr) was investigated by low-frequency Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MD simulations indicate that the long-range structure of neat BMIBr is disrupted resulting in a liquid with relatively low viscosity and high conductivity, but strong correlation of ionic motion persists in the BMIBr-SO(2) mixture due to ionic pairing. Raman spectra within the 5 < omega < 200 cm(-1) range at low temperature reveal the short-time dynamics, which is consistent with the vibrational density of states calculated by MD simulations. Several time correlation functions calculated by MD simulations give further insights on the structural relaxation of BMIBr-SO(2).
