Objective: Waveform analysis has been used to assess vascular resistance and predict cardiovascular events. We aimed to identify microvascular abnormalities in patients with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) using ocular waveform analysis. The effects of pioglitazone were also assessed. Methods: Forty patients with IGT and twenty-four controls were studied. Doppler velocity recordings were obtained from the central retinal, ophthalmic and common carotid arteries, and sampled at 200 Hz. A discrete wavelet-based analysis method was employed to quantify waveforms. The resistive index (RI),was also determined. Patients with IGT were randomised to pioglitazone or placebo and measurements repeated after 12 weeks treatment. Results: In the ocular waveforms, significant differences in power spectra were observed in frequency band four (corresponding to frequencies between 6.25 and 12.50 Hz) between groups (p

In this paper, a model is presented that describes the pressure drop of gas-liquid Taylor flow in round capillaries with a channel diameter typically less than 1 mm. The analysis of Bretherton (J Fluid Mech 10:166-188, 1961) for the pressure drop over a single gas bubble for vanishing liquid film thickness is extended to include a non-negligible liquid film thickness using the analysis of Aussillous and Qu,r, (Phys Fluids 12(10):2367-2371, 2000). This result is combined with the Hagen-Poiseuille equation for liquid flow using a mass balance-based Taylor flow model previously developed by the authors (Warnier et al. in Chem Eng J 135S:S153-S158, 2007). The model presented in this paper includes the effect of the liquid slug length on the pressure drop similar to the model of Kreutzer et al. (AIChE J 51(9):2428-2440, 2005). Additionally, the gas bubble velocity is taken into account, thereby increasing the accuracy of the pressure drop predictions compared to those of the model of Kreutzer et al. Experimental data were obtained for nitrogen-water Taylor flow in a round glass channel with an inner diameter of 250 mu m. The capillary number Ca (gl) varied between 2.3 x 10(-3) and 8.8 x 10(-3) and the Reynolds number Re (gl) varied between 41 and 159. The presented model describes the experimental results with an accuracy of +/- 4% of the measured values.

Flow maldistribution of the exhaust gas entering a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can cause uneven soot distribution during loading and excessive temperature gradients during the regeneration phase. Minimising the magnitude of this maldistribution is therefore an important consideration in the design of the inlet pipe and diffuser, particularly in situations where packaging constraints dictate bends in the inlet pipe close to the filter, or a sharp diffuser angle. This paper describes the use of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to validate a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model of the flow within the inlet diffuser of a DPF so that CFD can be used with confidence as a tool to minimise this flow maldistribution. PIV is used to study the flow of gas into a DPF over a range of steady state flow conditions. The distribution of flow approaching the front face of the substrate was of particular interest to this study. Optically clear diffusing cones were designed and placed between pipe and substrate to allow PIV analysis to take place. Stereoscopic PIV was used to eliminate any error produced by the optical aberrations caused by looking through the curved wall of the inlet cone. In parallel to the experiments, numerical analysis was carried out using a CFD program with an incorporated DPF model. Boundary conditions for the CFD simulations were taken from the experimental data, allowing an experimental validation of the numerical results. The CFD model incorporated a DPF model, the cement layers seen in segmented filters and the intumescent matting that is commonly used to pack the filter into a metal casing. The mesh contained approximately 580,000 cells and used the realizable ?-e turbulence model. The CFD simulation predicted both pressure drop across the DPF and the velocity field within the cone and at the DPF face with reasonable accuracy, providing confidence in the use the CFD in future work to design new, more efficient cones.

A dynamic global security-aware synthesis flow using the SystemC language is presented. SystemC security models are first specified at the system or behavioural level using a library of SystemC behavioural descriptions which provide for the reuse and extension of security modules. At the core of the system is incorporated a global security-aware scheduling algorithm which allows for scheduling to a mixture of components of varying security level. The output from the scheduler is translated into annotated nets which are subsequently passed to allocation, optimisation and mapping tools for mapping into circuits. The synthesised circuits incorporate asynchronous secure power-balanced and fault-protected components. Results show that the approach offers robust implementations and efficient security/area trade-offs leading to significant improvements in turnover.

The capillary micro reactor, with four stable operating flow patterns and a throughput range from grams per hour to kilograms per hour, presents an attractive alternative to chip-based and microstructured reactors for laboratory- and pilot-scale applications. In this article, results for the extraction of 2-butanol from toluene under different flow patterns in a water/toluene flow in long capillary microreactors are presented. The effects of the capillary length (0.4-2.2 m), flow rate (0.1-12 mL/min), and aqueous-to-organic volumetric flow ratio (0.25-9) on the slug, bubbly, parallel, and annular flow hydrodynamics were investigated. Weber-number-dependent flow maps were composed for capillary lengths of 0.4 and 2 m that were used to interpret the flow pattern formation in terms of surface tension and inertia forces. When the capillary length was decreased from 2 to 0.4 m, a transition from annular to parallel flow was observed. The capillary length had little influence on slug and bubbly flows. The flow patterns were evaluated in terms of stability, surface-to-volume ratio, throughput, and extraction efficiency. Slug and bubbly flow operations yielded 100% thermodynamic extraction efficiency, and increasing the aqueous-to-organic volumetric ratio to 9 allowed for 99% 2-butanol extraction. The parallel and annular flow operating windows were limited by the capillary length, thus yielding maximum 2-butanol extractions of 30% and 47% for parallel and annular flows, respectively.

In this paper, the hydrodynamics and the pressure drop of liquid-liquid slug flow in round microcapillaries are presented. Two liquid-liquid flow systems are considered, viz. water-toluene and ethylene glycol/water-toluene. The slug lengths of the alternating continuous and dispersed phases were measured as a function of the slug velocity (0.03-0.5 m/s), the organic-to-aqueous flow ratio (0.1-4.0), and the microcapillary internal diameter (248 and 498 mu m). The pressure drop is modeled as the sum of two contributions: the frictional and the interface pressure drop. Two models are presented, viz, the stagnant film model and the moving film model. Both models account for the presence of a thin liquid film between the dispersed phase slug and the capillary wall. It is found that the film velocity is of negligible influence on the pressure drop. Therefore, the stagnant film model is adequate to accurately predict the liquid-liquid slug flow pressure drop. The influence of inertia and the consequent change of the slug cap curvature are accounted for by modifying Bretherton's curvature parameter in the interface pressure drop equation. The stagnant film model is in good agreement with experimental data with a mean relative error of less than 7%.

A systematic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach has been applied to design the geometry of the channels of a three-dimensional (thick-walled) screen comprising upstream and downstream sets of elongated channels positioned at an angle of 90 degrees with respect to each other. Such a geometry of the thick-wall screen can effectively drop the ratio of the maximum flow velocity to mean flow velocity below 1.005 in a downstream microstructured reactor at low Reynolds numbers. In this approach the problem of flow equalization reduces to that of flow equalization in the first and second downstream channels of the thick-walled screen. In turn, this requires flow equalization in the corresponding cross-sections of the upstream channels. The validity of the proposed design method was assessed through a case study. The effect of different design parameters on the flow non-uniformity in the downstream channels has been established. The design equation is proposed to calculate the optimum values of the screen parameters. The CFD results on flow distribution were experimentally validated by Laser Doppler Anemometry measurements in the range of Reynolds numbers from 6 to 113. The measured flow non-uniformity in the separate reactor channels was below 2%.

The present work is focused on the demonstration of the advantages of miniaturized reactor systems which are essential for processes where potential for considerable heat transfer intensification exists as well as for kinetic studies of highly exothermic reactions at near-isothermal conditions. The heat transfer characteristics of four different cross-flow designs of a microstructured reactor/heat-exchanger (MRHE) were studied by CFD simulation using ammonia oxidation on a platinum catalyst as a model reaction. An appropriate distribution of the nitrogen flow used as a coolant can decrease drastically the axial temperature gradient in the reaction channels. In case of a microreactor made of a highly conductive material, the temperature non-uniformity in the reactor is strongly dependent on the distance between the reaction and cooling channels. Appropriate design of a single periodic reactor/heat-exchanger unit, combined with a non-uniform inlet coolant distribution, reduces the temperature gradients in the complete reactor to less than 4degreesC, even at conditions corresponding to an adiabatic temperature rise of about 1400degreesC, which are generally not accessible in conventional reactors because of the danger of runaway reactions. To obtain the required coolant flow distribution, an optimization study was performed to acquire the particular geometry of the inlet and outlet chambers in the microreactor/heat-exchanger. The predicted temperature profiles are in good agreement with experimental data from temperature sensors located along the reactant and coolant flows. The results demonstrate the clear potential of microstructured devices as reliable instruments for kinetic research as well as for proper heat management in the case of highly exothermic reactions. To enhance the uniformity of fluid flow distribution in microreactors, a header configuration consisting of a cone diffuser connected to a thick-walled screen has been proposed. The thick-walled screen consists of two sections: the upstream section constitutes a set of elongated parallel upstream channels and the downstream section constitutes a set of elongated parallel downstream channels positioned at an angle of 90 with respect to the upstream channels. In this approach the problem of flow, equalization reduces to that of flow equalization in the first and second downstream channels of the thick-walled screen. In turn, this requires flow equalization in the corresponding cross sections of the upstream channels. The computational fluid dynamics analysis of the fluid flow maldistribution shows that eight parallel upstream channels with a width of 300-600 pm are required per 1 cm of length for flow equalization. The length to width ratio of these channels has to be > 15. The numerical results suggest that the proposed header-configuration can effectively improve the performance of the downstream microstructured devices, decreasing the ratio of the maximum flow velocity to the mean flow velocity from 2 to 1.005 for a wide range of Reynolds numbers (0.5-10). 2006 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AlChE J, 53: 28-38, 2007.
