Stem cells are defined as cells capable of self-renewal and differentiation into specialized cells when submited to external signalings in the enviroment. Among adult stem cells, mesenchymal cells occupy an important position because they can differentiate into mesodermal cells such as osteoblasts, adipocytes and chondrocytes. Cell therapy consists in the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in the treatment of degenerative diseases and harmed tissue reconstruction. Due to the longstanding and costly procedure for cultivation of MSC, it was proposed the use of low power light sources, such as light emitting diodes (LED), to optimize these factors. Recent works have shown a series of results from the influence of LED light on biological tissues such as increased rate of cell proliferation, increased RNA, DNA and ATP synthesis rate. The purpose of this study is to compare the biomodulator effect of LED light set at wavelengths 630nm ± 10nm and 805nm ± 10nm on the mesenchymal stem cells proliferation. For this, the mesenchymal stem cells culture adopted the procedure used in the Departament of Animal Reproduction and Veterinary Radiology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of Botucatu. MSC were obtained from an adult horse bone marrow, and isolated by density gradient separation, with the FICOLL reagent and by centrifugation. The pellet containing the stem cells was removed and these were placed in low glucose DMEM culture medium, containing 10% fetal calf serum and antibiotics. The material was observed daily by inverted microscopy for monitoring the progression of the cells and subsequently the amount of cells were counted in a Neubauer counting chamber. The amount of MSC was obtained by cell culture seeded in 24 wells culture plate and segregated into three distinct groups: Group 1 was irradiated with wavelength set at 630nm ± 10 nm, Group... Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate by histometric and immunohistochemistry analysis the effects of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in alveolar prior to placement of mini-implants in animals with or without induced periodontal disease. Material and method: Thirty-two rats were used. Periodontal disease (PD) was induced by ligature in the lower left first molar. After 7 days of PD evolution, it was performed removal of the ligature and extraction of the left lower first molars in all animals. Thus, animals were divided into 2 groups (n=16) according to the treatments in the dental alveolus before immediate implant installation: MD (control) : mechanical debridement (MD), irrigation with 1 ml of saline solution followed by implant installation; aPDT- MD, irrigation with 1 ml of Toluidine Blue-O and low intensity laser (LLLT) and implant installation. Eight animals from each group were euthanized at 15 and 30 days after the installation of mini-implants. Specimens were processed for histologic, immunohistochemical and histometric analysis. The histometric data were processed for statistical analysis (Kruskall-Wallis and Dunn test; p <0.05). Result: In treatment analysis, results indicated that there was a greater BIC in implants installed in uncontaminated alveolus treated with a PDT ( p<0,05) and greater imuno-reactivity to OPG in bone issue treated with aPDT. Conclusion: The aPDT proved to be effective in bone loss control in no contaminated area and it has increased the bone loss and metabolic activity in alveolus irradiated prior to implant installation.

Stryphnodendron obovatum Benth. known as barbatimão de folha miúda, is a typical tree of the Midwest and Southeast “Cerrado” regions of Brazil. Several secondary metabolites have been identified in its barks, including tannins, described on the literature as allelochemicals. Beholding to identify a possible allelopathic activity in S. obovatum leaves, we tested hydroethanolic EtOH:H2 O (70% and 50% v/v) extracts, in different concentrations, on the initial development of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Among the results, we highlight the effect of the 50% hydroethanolic extract in inhibiting the formation of the main and the secondary roots and the stimulation of the hypocotyl growth in C. sativus by the 70% hydroethanolic extract, both in all concentrations tested. The cytotoxic activity, evaluated by bioassay toxicity on Artemia salina Leach., was negative for the tested extracts (LC50> 1000 mg.mL-1). Concomitantly, the molluscicidal activity, evaluated against snails of Biomphalaria glabrata Say, presented low acute toxicity of solutions of 70% hydroethanolic extract at concentrations of 128.9 mg.mL-1 and 172.8 mg.mL-1 and values above 250 mg.mL-1 to solutions of 50% hydroalcoholic extract, being therefore considered inactive for these. The results suggest the existence of allelochemicals in the extracts tested and they have low toxicity.
