Um incêndio é algo difícil de prever, assim como a sua consequência nos elementos de construção. Dessa forma, ao longo das últimas décadas, os elementos de construção têm sido alvo de diversos estudos a fim de avaliar os seus comportamentos quando solicitados em situação de incêndio. O International Building Code (IBC) descreve um método de cálculo analítico para a determinação da resistência ao fogo dos elementos da construção de acordo com os procedimentos de teste estabelecidos na ASTM E119 (Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials). Nesta dissertação foi feita uma análise desse método, que se mostrou inadequado para estimar a resistência ao fogo das alvenarias, sem função estrutural, de blocos cerâmicos e blocos de betão, uma vez que despreza qualquer efeito do ar no interior das mesmas. No seguimento desta análise, é apresentado um desenvolvimento do método descrito tendo em conta o efeito do ar. Depois de uma análise aos vários tipos de blocos cerâmicos e de betão com diferentes dimensões e geometrias foi possível obter uma relação entre a espessura equivalente de ar existente num bloco e a sua respectiva resistência ao fogo, de modo a serem obtidos os valores descritos na normalização existente. O efeito do ar mostrou ter uma maior influência na resistência ao fogo nas alvenarias constituídas por blocos cerâmicos de furação vertical, já que a sua geometria caracterizada por um elevado número de pequenos alvéolos contribui para o aumento do isolamento térmico, e consequentemente da sua resistência ao fogo. Nas alvenarias rebocadas os valores da resistência ao fogo aumentam cerca de 50%, quando revestidos com argamassa de cimento, e 70% quando revestidos com gesso, logo, o emprego de revestimentos representam uma boa alternativa para aumentar a resistência ao fogo.

A reabilitação de edifícios antigos tem vindo a alcançar uma maior importância na actual narrativa da organização das cidades, devido à inevitável necessidade de reabilitar o património arquitetónico dos centros degradados, sendo vista pelo setor da construção civil como uma atividade com potencial de desenvolvimento para todos os intervenientes na construção. Torna-se, por isso, num tema consensual e extremamente interessante como objeto de estudo e reflexão, concretamente na cidade do Porto, onde se pode encontrar um centro histórico classificado. Nesta perspetiva deve ser dada a devida relevância à preservação do património construído, reabilitando-o para que a população regresse ao centro urbano. O presente relatório tem como base um estágio desenvolvido na empresa Porto Vivo, Sociedade de Reabilitação Urbana (SRU) da Baixa do Porto. Numa primeira parte deste trabalho será feita uma reflexão sobre a reabilitação urbana, registando a evolução que esta tem vindo a sofrer ao longo dos tempos, tendo posteriormente o foco na cidade do Porto, mais concretamente no centro histórico da cidade. Também será dado ênfase à intervenção da Porto Vivo SRU. Numa segunda parte, serão abordados os tipos de estrutura predominantes no centro histórico da cidade do Porto, nomeadamente, estruturas de madeira e estruturas de alvenaria de pedra. Por fim, na terceira parte deste trabalho analisaremos dois casos de obra. Como corolário, apresentamos a conclusão do trabalho onde se incluem propostas e sugestões para o seu desenvolvimento futuro.

O mudejarismo é, numa definição geral, a arte de tradição islâmica efectuada sob domínio cristão, constituindo a única arte genuína da Península Ibérica. Descreve-se como aquela arte se manifestou no sul de Portugal, nos finais do século XV e princípios do século XVI, adaptando-se ao tardo-gótico daquela região. Identificam-se e caracterizam-se os principais monumentos com decoração mudéjar do sul de Portugal, analisando as suas formas, técnicas e materiais.

On April 25, 1878 at an informal meeting of members of the Toronto Chapter of Rose Croix a petition was presented for a warrant for a Lodge of Perfection. The Toronto Lodge of Perfection of the Scottish Rite Masonry in the Valley of Toronto held its inaugural meeting in Toronto, Ont. on May 22 1878 with support and approval of the Supreme Council for Canada. From time to time, the name of the chapter was also known as the Toronto Grand Lodge of Perfection, but was dropped permanently in 1884. The group continues to meet today in Toronto, Ontario.

James D. Tait (1836-1907) came to Canada in 1855 from Scotland. He worked in the dry goods business until he established the James D. Tait Company in 1864. The business was first located on Ontario street and specialized in furs. The business expanded to include dry goods and dress-making. After the building was destroyed by fire, Tait established and expanded the business into the Prendergast building on the corner of St. Paul and William Streets. James D. Tait died in 1907 while on vacation in Muskoka. In 1912 upon the resignation (or removal) of Benjamin Brick and Arthur Harbour, Stanley G. Smith joins the company as a director and secretary-treasurer. 1918/1919 vice-president E.J. Dignum dies. 1919 S.J. Inksater becomes a director of the company (His stock was purchased by the J.D. Tait Co.) By the 1930s the business, still in the same location, was under the leadership of Malcolm Stobie, President, Samuel J. Inksater, Vice-President and Stanley G. Smith, Secretary-Treasurer. The James D. Tait Company Limited ceased operations on 17 August 1933. The 1935 St. Catharines city directory records John Stobie, a former manager of the James D. Tait Company, operating a dry goods business at the same location, but with one-third the size of the original store space.

Fairview School was built in 1919 in Louth Township, Lincoln County, Ont. The school remained in operation until 1979 when it was purchased for a church, the Fairview-Louth Community church, which later became Southridge Community church. Currently, the building is occupied by the Niagara Korean Presbyterian Church.

I do hereby authorise and permit Thomas Clark of Queenstown in the County of Lincoln in the Province of Upper Canada merchant to take possession of all that Lot, piece and parcel of Land (being part of the land reserved by his Majesty for Military purposes) situate, lying and being at Queenstown in the Township of Newark, in the Home District in the said Province of Upper Canada, bounded and abutted as follows, that is to say beginning at the Distance of two Chains and ninety links from the South East End of his Majesty’s Store House, the said distance being measured along the Bank up Stream, thence South thirty nine degrees and an half West one Chain and fifty links thence south fifty degrees and an half East one Chain and thirty links thence North thirty nine degrees and an half East to the Edge of the Bank and from thence along the Bank to the place of beginning, containing thirty one perches and one hundred and twenty five square links and to occupy and hold the said Lot, piece and parcel of Land during pleasure subject nevertheless to the provisoes and Conditions herein after contained, that is to say. The Niagara Parks Commission administrative headquarters are located in Oak Hall which is on the cliff above Dufferin Islands. In 1798 this land was granted by the crown to United Empire Loyalist James Skinner until 1898. A century later it was the home of the Clarks, Streets and Macklems. These families controlled the mills of Bridgewater which was a pioneer industrial village located at Dufferin Islands. Then, it was known as Clark Hill. Colonel Thomas Clark, commander of the Second Lincoln Militia in the War of 1812 is the earliest known occupant of the house. When Clark died in 1837, the house went to Thomas Clark Street who was the son of the Colonel’s partner. Mr. Street was a bachelor and his sister, widow of Dr. T.C. Macklem, managed his household. Mrs. Macklem had 2 sons. The eldest son drowned in the Niagara River at the age of 8 and the younger son, Sutherland became heir to the estate. Mr. Macklem opened Cynthia Islands and Cedar Island to the public and had roads built to reach them. Two suspension bridges connected them to the mainland and tolls were charged on the bridges. The improvements to the land cost Macklem $18,962. He called the bridges “Bridge Castor” and “Bridge Pollux”. There was also an office built at the end of Bridge Castor. Macklem also spent $454 fixing up the Burning Spring Building (the burning spring is enclosed in a barrel which collects gas and lets it out through a tube at the top). Macklem received a yearly income of $56,378.79 from tourists and visitors. In 1887 Cynthia Islands and Cedar Island were deeded to the crown and became part of Queen Victoria Park. A book entitled Histoire de la foundation du Grand Orient de France by Claude-Antoine Thory, 1812. This is likely an editor’s copy for a new edition. It has 471 pages and is annotated throughout. There are 4 plates at the end of the book that contain various illustrations resembling lockets. The title page states that the book contains the “…revolutions that have preceded, accompanied and followed until one thousand seven hundred ninety nine, era of the meeting in this body, the Grand Lodge of France, known as the Grand Orient de Clermont, or the Arcade de la Pelleterie, with an appendix containing the supporting documents, several curious and unpublished reports with the history of the Franche- Masonry, the details of many rites and a fragment of the secret meetings of women.” (Section 1 pp1-96, Section 2 pp. 97-183, Section 3 pp.184-281, Section 4 pp. 282-346, Section 5 pp. 347-471)

Report sent to the President and Director of the Port Dalhousie and Thorold Railway stating that the location of the line extension of the railway is completed. The distance from Thorold Station to Port Colborne is 20 miles. The estimate provides for construction of a permanent structure across the Chippewa and Welland River. Estimates for building a first class road, culverts and bridges will be of permanent and durable masonry. This includes estimates for various station buildings such as a warehouse in Port Colborne and a warehouse in Port Dalhousie. Surveys and plans are ready and will be registered this week.
