The question of how we can encourage creative capacities in young people has never been more relevant than it is today (Pink, 2006; Robinson as cited in TEDtalksDirector, 2007; Eisner as cited in VanderbiltUniversity, 2009). While the world is rapidly evolving, education has the great challenge of adapting to keep up. Scholars say that to meet the needs of 21st century learners, pedagogy must focus on fostering creative skills to enable students to manage in a future we cannot yet envision (Robinson as cited in TEDtalksDirector, 2007). Further, research demonstrates that creativity thrives with autonomy, support, and without judgment (Amabile, 1996; Codack [Zak], 2010; Harrington, Block, & Block, 1987; Holt, 1989; Kohn, 1993). So how well are schools doing in this regard? How do alternative models of education nurture or neglect creativity, and how can this inform teaching practice all around? In other words, ultimately, how can we nurture creativity in education? This documentary explores these questions from a scholarly art-based perspective. Artist/researcher/teacher Rebecca Zak builds on her experience in the art studio, academia, and the art classroom to investigate the various philosophies and strategies that diverse educational models implement to illuminate the possibilities for educational and paradigmatic transformation. The Raising Creativity documentary project consists of multiple parts across multiple platforms. There are five videos in the series that answer the why, who, how, what, and now what about creativity in education respectively (i.e., why is this topic important, who has spoken/written on this topic already, how will this issue be investigated this time, what was observed during the inquiry, and now what will this mean going forward?). There is also a self-reflexive blog that addresses certain aspects of the topic in greater depth (located here, on this website) and in the context of Rebecca's lived experience to complement the video format. Together, all video and blog artifacts housed on this website function as a polyptych, wherein the pieces can stand alone individually yet are intended to work together and fulfill the dissertation requirements for Rebecca's doctorate degree in education in reimagined ways.

Artist’s rendering in colour of Isobel Price in an oval frame with a hook at the top and a section at the back which contains a lock of hair. This painting was done by Gerald Sinclair Hayward who was a renowned artist whose work was displayed at an exhibition in New York in 1899. He painted Theodore Roosevelt, William K. Vanderbilt and members of the ruling families of Britain, Germany and Russia. The frame is enclosed in a folding case lined with velvet and silk. The silk is quite worn. The outside of the case appears to be leather and has a stand for setting it upright. It closes with a metal latch. This is accompanied by a note by R. Band.

A drawing done on paper 50cm x 45cm and mounted in a frame under glass. This is a drawing of a meeting held at the St. Catharines House on February 26, 1849. The drawing was done from memory by W. Osborn who has signed the picture on one of the pillars on the right hand side of the picture. The caption under the picture reads "Act 1st Scene 1st". There is some dialogue, "Woodruff - 'He says gentlemen, my son holds an office under Government, of 400 pounds per year - he forgot to tell you, he sold his constituents at Cornwall' - Macdonald 'You're a liar'". The artist portrays a fight breaking out and lists the characters as Boyd , Rykert, Hobdon, Foley, The Sheriff, Woodruff, J.W.O. Clarke, McDonald, Lamb, Hamilton and Hathaway. There are some very slight wrinkles and tears in the drawing. They do not affect the drawing. [Rolland MacDonald (1810-1881) represented Cornwall in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1844-1846. He was called to the bar in 1832 and set up practice in St. Catharines. The quote on the drawing concerns the constituents at Cornwall. This meeting was covered in reports in the St. Catharines Journal on: March 1, March 8, march 15 and march 22, 1849. In this paper, we look at how labor market conditions at different points during the tenure of individuals with firms are correlated with current earnings. Using data on individuals from the German Socioeconomic Panel for the 1985-1994 period, we find that both the contemporaneous unemployment rate and prior values of the unemployment rate are significantly correlated with current earnings, contrary to results for the American labor market. Estimated elasticities vary between 9 and 15 percent for the elasticity of earnings with respect to current unemployment rates, and between 6 and 10 percent with respect to unemployment rates at the start of current firm tenure. Moreover, whereas local unemployment rates determine levels of earnings, national rates influence contemporaneous variations in earnings. We interpret this result as evidence that German unions do, in fact, bargain over wages and employment, but that models of individualistic contracts, such as the implicit contract model, may explain some of the observed wage drift and longer-term wage movements reasonably well. Furthermore, we explore the heterogeneity of contracts over a variety of worker and job characteristics. In particular, we find evidence that contracts differ across firm size and worker type. Workers of large firms are remarkably more insulated from the job market than workers for any other type of firm, indicating the importance of internal job markets.

Considérant que le Canada aura perdu presque un million de travailleurs qualifiés en 2020 et qu’en 2005, déjà 40 à 60% des travailleurs de la génération des baby-boomers ont pris leur retraite, on peut anticiper que les capacités d’innovation des entreprises sont en train de devenir un enjeu de société. De plus, depuis quelques années déjà, on remarque que la valeur des connaissances et de la créativité au sein des économies capitalistes a augmenté, plaçant les industries créatives au premier plan. En fait, les activités de création artistique incarneraient l’expression la plus avancée des modes de production et des relations au sein du monde du travail engendrées par les mutations récentes du capitalisme. Apprendre à innover devient dès lors une priorité et, comme les pratiques exemplaires émergent généralement chez les leaders d’une industrie, le cirque le plus applaudi à travers le monde, le Cirque du Soleil, représente un terrain idéal de renouvellement des pratiques d’innovation. Centrée spécifiquement sur le cas de l’innovation artistique, cette recherche explore les interactions entre les artistes et les managers pendant les premières phases d’un projet d’architecture menant à la construction d’un centre d’art et de divertissement, un des secteurs d’affaires de l’entreprise. Cette thèse présente les résultats d’une étude de cas effectuée dans un champ de recherche en émergence au sein des recherches en management : le croisement entre l’art et le management. À partir d’une perspective interdisciplinaire incluant une méthodologie ethnographique et une approche esthétique des organisations, l’étude met l’accent sur la co-création de connaissances parmi les artistes et les managers participant à un projet de grande envergure. La problématique de l’innovation est étudiée par le biais des pratiques managériales et artistiques, à partir de l’étude des organisations, de l’anthropologie et de la sociologie. L’étude vise à comprendre comment ces deux groupes culturels distincts travaillent et apprennent dans l’action et comment leurs pratiques collectives sont créées, partagées et mises en œuvre. À partir du quotidien de 26 artistes et managers suivi sur une période de 9 mois, complété par l’analyse de plus de 5500 pages de documents et de 20 heures de vidéo, une ethnographie de type récit de fiction donne accès à la culture de ces maîtres bâtisseurs, à leur imaginaire, à leur mode de vie et à leurs pratiques. La cognition partagée entre ces acteurs de l’industrie créative des arts du cirque donne lieu à sept pratiques (tribu, dialogue, récits, innovation, action, rapports et mémoire) qui sont décrites selon une double perspective, le management et les sciencs humaines. Outre une méthodologie qui intègre l’approche esthétique des organisations, une nouvelle définition de la face cachée de l’innovation est proposée, ainsi qu’un modèle conceptuel dynamique développé à partir des pratiques novatrices du Cirque du Soleil. Créatives, celles-ci constituent une source d’inspiration pour le domaine du management. En ce sens, cette recherche contribue à l’étude des organisations et au développement de pratiques créatives de management.
