Surveys were taken of motor vehicle drivers’ and passengers’ seat belt usage. These surveys are before and after parts of the “Click it or Ticket” education and enforcement campaign. The whole project starts with a pre-campaign survey followed by the four-week public information, education and enforcement campaign. Finally, the postcampaign survey is taken to test the effectiveness of the education and enforcement campaign.

The requirements included the involvement of a qualified statistician in the sampling and weighting portions of the process as well as a variety of operational details. The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau contracted with Iowa State University’s Survey & Behavioral Research Services (SBRS) in 2011 to develop the study design and data collection plan for the State of Iowa annual survey that would meet the new requirements of the NHTSA. A seat belt survey plan for Iowa was developed by SBRS with statistical expertise provided by Zhengyuan Zhu, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Statistics at Iowa State University. The Iowa plan was submitted to NHTSA in December of 2011 and official approval was received on March 19, 2012.

Se hace un análisis del transecto discontinuo realizado en la ladera suroeste del Cerro Verde, localizado en el departamento de Santa Ana, determinando la dominancia de las especies, a diferentes alturas de transecto, el cual va desde 1,580 hasta 2,000 m.s.n.m. Se consideran todos los arboles con una circunferencia a la altura del pecho(C.A.P. de 30 cas. O más), se determina el índice de valor de importancia, para cada especie; las especies dominantes resultaron ser: Montanoa Guatemalensis a 1,580 m.s.n.m., Lonchocarpus minimiflorus a 1,600 m.s.n.m., Oreopanax xalapensis a 1,750 m.s.n.m., Styrax argentus a 1,750 m.s.n. m.a 1,800 m.s.n.m. Eugenia sp. a 2,000 m.s.n.m., Quercus sp. a 2,000 m.s.n.m. A cada especie se le aplica el modelo de Poisson para determinar el grado de dispersión de la vegetación; Roupala Borealis resulto distribuida al azar; las demás ya mencionadas aparecen como agregadas.

Os gradientes altitudinais são importantes modelos em ecologia pois permitem, numa escala reduzida, estudar a influência da variação de diversas variáveis ambientais nos padrões de biodiversidade existentes. Estes padrões são influenciados por diversos factores, desde variáveis climáticas às relacionadas com a perturbação humana. Nesta tese é estudada a variação na composição das comunidades de borboletas ao longo do gradiente altitudinal na Serra da Estrela e são testadas duas hipóteses sobre os padrões de riqueza específica ao longo do gradiente altitudinal: a regra de Rapoport e o “Mid Domain Effect” (MDE). Foram assinaladas 70 espécies de borboletas neste estudo e constatou-se que a variação na riqueza de espécies de borboletas apresenta um padrão “mid peak” apoiando o MDE. Verificou-se também que as comunidades de borboletas do mesmo nível altitudinal são mais semelhantes entre si independentemente da vertente em que se encontram e são também mais semelhantes com as comunidades dos níveis altitudinais adjacentes. Finalmente, a análise da distribuição de algumas espécies ameaçadas de borboletas torna evidente a necessidade de realização de mais estudos sobre a biologia da conservação deste grupo de animais em Portugal; Abstract: Altitudinal gradients are important ecological models because they allow us to study the influence of diverse environmental variables in the existing biodiversity patterns. These patterns are influenced by various factors, from climatic variables to variables related to human disturbance. In this thesis we studied the variations in the composition of the butterfly assemblages along the altitudinal gradient of Serra da Estrela and we tested two hypotheses regarding the species richness patterns along the altitudinal gradient: Rapoport’s rule and the Mid Domain Effect (MDE). In this study 70 butterfly species were marked recorded and it was observed that the butterfly species richness presents a mid-peak pattern supporting the MDE. It was also noted that the butterfly assemblages in the same altitudinal level show more similarity within themselves regardless of the slope they are found in, and are also more similar to the assemblages present in the adjacent altitudinal levels. Finally, the distribution of some threatened butterfly species was analyzed and it became evident the need to do more studies regarding the conservation biology of this animal group in Portugal.

The advancement of online teaching environments during the past several years presents an exciting opportunity to extend existing teaching methodologies. The software package known as Elluminate is one example of a virtual classroom, facilitating the provision of real time interaction, collaboration and group meetings. This paper will examine the use of Elluminate in the teaching of large classes. The use of such technology for large classes is of particular interest, as large classes are often, unfairly, associated with a reputation for being impersonal as well as notions of conveyor belt learning. In this paper the potential to extend teaching and learning opportunities using Elluminate, in the context of large classes, will be explored. It will be shown that the use of technology such as Elluminate can assist in providing students with a more flexible means of accessing academic support, as well as allowing for a customised delivery of course content so as to focus learning outcomes.

Correct use of child restraints reduces the risk of death and injury. Use of adult seat belts is better than being unrestrained but can result in injury to children who are too small. New Australian legislation extends the requirement for using child-specific restraints until children are 7 years old and thus requires more appropriate levels of protection for these children. As part of a larger study of injury prevention in Queensland, parents of children 0-9 years old were surveyed regarding their restraint practices before the introduction of the new legislation. The restraint status of 18% of the children would not be compliant with the new legislation, with the problem being more prevalent for 5-9 year olds (22%) than 0-4 year olds (16%). A high proportion of older children used an adult seat belt. Very few children aged 0-4 (1.3%) usually travelled in the front seat in contravention of the new requirement, but around 11% of this age group were reported as ever having done so. Usual travel in the front seat was higher among 5-9 year olds (8.5%), with more than half of the 5-9 year olds reported as ever having done so. Given the widespread use of adult seat belts by older children, there is a need to consider improving protection of children in the ‘gap’ between when the requirement for the child to use a booster ceases (effectively age 7) and when the adult belt is likely to actually fit the child (closer to age 9 or 10).
