Lentil is a self-pollinating diploid (2n = 14 chromosomes) annual cool season legume crop that is produced throughout the world and is highly valued as a high protein food. Several abiotic stresses are important to lentil yields world wide and include drought, heat, salt susceptibility and iron deficiency. The biotic stresses are numerous and include: susceptibility to Ascochyta blight, caused by Ascochyta lentis; Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum truncatum; Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum; Sclerotinia white mold, caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum; rust, caused by Uromyces fabae; and numerous aphid transmitted viruses. Lentil is also highly susceptible to several species of Orabanche prevalent in the Mediterranean region, for which there does not appear to be much resistance in the germplasm. Plant breeders and geneticists have addressed these stresses by identifying resistant/tolerant germplasm, determining the genetics involved and the genetic map positions of the resistant genes. To this end progress has been made in mapping the lentil genome and several genetic maps are available that eventually will lead to the development of a consensus map for lentil. Marker density has been limited in the published genetic maps and there is a distinct lack of co-dominant markers that would facilitate comparisons of the available genetic maps and efficient identification of markers closely linked to genes of interest. Molecular breeding of lentil for disease resistance genes using marker assisted selection, particularly for resistance to Ascochyta blight and Anthracnose, is underway in Australia and Canada and promising results have been obtained. Comparative genomics and synteny analyses with closely related legumes promises to further advance the knowledge of the lentil genome and provide lentil breeders with additional genes and selectable markers for use in marker assisted selection. Genomic tools such as macro and micro arrays, reverse genetics and genetic transformation are emerging technologies that may eventually be available for use in lentil crop improvement.

Introduction: A resorbable collagen matrix with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP-2) was compared with traditional iliac crest bone graft for the closure of alveolar defects during secondary dental eruption. Methods: Sixteen patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate, aged 8 to 12 years, were selected and randomly assigned to group 1 (rhBMP-2) or group 2 (iliac crest bone graft). Computed tomography was performed to assess both groups preoperatively and at months 6 and 12 postoperatively. Bone height and defect volume were calculated through Osirix Dicom Viewer (Pixmeo, Apple Inc.). Overall morbidity was recorded. Results: Preoperative and follow-up examinations revealed progressive alveolar bone union in all patients. For group 1, final completion of the defect with a 65.0% mean bone height was detected 12 months postoperatively. For group 2, final completion of the defect with an 83.8% mean bone height was detected 6 months postoperatively. Dental eruption routinely occurred in both groups. Clinical complications included significant swelling in three group 1 patients (37.5%) and significant donor-site pain in seven group 2 patients (87.5%). Conclusions: For this select group of patients with immature skeleton, rhBMP-2 therapy resulted in satisfactory bone healing and reduced morbidity compared with traditional iliac crest bone grafting.

Background: Decreased signal intensity in the corpus callosum, reported in adult bipolar disorder patients, has been regarded as an indicator of abnormalities in myelination. Here we compared the callosal signal intensity of children and adolescents with bipolar disorder to that of matched healthy subjects, to investigate the hypothesis that callosal myelination is abnormal in pediatric bipolar patients. Methods: Children and adolescents with DSM-lV bipolar disorder (n=16, mean age +/- S.D. = 15.5 +/- 3.4 y) and matched healthy comparison subjects (n=21, mean age +/- S.D.=16.9 3.8 y) underwent a 1.5 T MRI brain scan. Corpus callosuin signal intensity was measured using an Apple Power Mac G4 running NIH Image 1.62 software. Results: Bipolar children and adolescents had significantly lower corpus callosum signal intensity for all callosal sub-regions (genu, anterior body, posterior body, isthmus and splenium) compared to healthy subjects (ANCOVA, all p < 0.05, age and gender as covariates). Limitations: Relatively small sample size. Conclusions: Abnormalities in corpus callosum, probably due to altered myelination during neurodevelopment, may play a role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder among children and adolescents. Background: Food portion size estimation involves a complex mental process that may influence food consumption evaluation. Knowing the variables that influence this process can improve the accuracy of dietary assessment. The present study aimed to evaluate the ability of nutrition students to estimate food portions in usual meals and relate food energy content with errors in food portion size estimation. Methods: Seventy-eight nutrition students, who had already studied food energy content, participated in this cross-sectional study on the estimation of food portions, organised into four meals. The participants estimated the quantity of each food, in grams or millilitres, with the food in view. Estimation errors were quantified, and their magnitude were evaluated. Estimated quantities (EQ) lower than 90% and higher than 110% of the weighed quantity (WQ) were considered to represent underestimation and overestimation, respectively. Correlation between food energy content and error on estimation was analysed by the Spearman correlation, and comparison between the mean EQ and WQ was accomplished by means of the Wilcoxon signed rank test (P < 0.05). Results: A low percentage of estimates (18.5%) were considered accurate (+/- 10% of the actual weight). The most frequently underestimated food items were cauliflower, lettuce, apple and papaya; the most often overestimated items were milk, margarine and sugar. A significant positive correlation between food energy density and estimation was found (r = 0.8166; P = 0.0002). Conclusions: The results obtained in the present study revealed a low percentage of acceptable estimations of food portion size by nutrition students, with trends toward overestimation of high-energy food items and underestimation of low-energy items.

Background: Shrimp is a frequent cause of food allergy. Tropomyosin is the major allergen in shrimp, and it shares homology to tropomyosins from other crustaceans, dust mites, cockroach, and parasites. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the value of detection of IgE to shrimp tropomyosin in the diagnosis of shrimp allergy. Methods: We have studied 35 patients with asthma, rhinitis, or both who were sensitized to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. All subjects underwent skin prick testing in addition to double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges (DBPCFC); oral open challenges; or both with shrimp. Measurements of IgE to shrimp and shrimp tropomyosin were carried out by means of CAP and chimeric ELISA, respectively. Results: Oral challenges confirmed the diagnosis of shrimp allergy in 7 patients. IgE measurement to shrimp tropomyosin was positive in 71.4% of the patients with shrimp allergy. Of the 28 patients without shrimp allergy, only 7.1% (2/28) had IgE to shrimp tropomyosin compared with 25% (7/28) who had IgE to shrimp and 35.7% (10/28) who had positive skin prick test responses to shrimp. Sensitivity was similar for all 3 methods (71.4%); in contrast, specificity of IgE to shrimp tropomyosin (92.8%) was greater than that of IgE to shrimp (75%) and skin prick testing (64.2%). With regard to diagnostic efficiency, measurement of IgE to shrimp tropomyosin was superior to measurement of IgE to shrimp and skin prick testing (88.5%, 74.2%, and 65.7%, respectively). Conclusion: Use of measurements of IgE to shrimp tropomyosin provided added value to the diagnosis of shrimp allergy. (J Allergy Clin Immunol 2010;125:872-8.)

A 47-year-old man presented with complaints of progressive diplopia in downgaze and a painful firm mass on the left medial superior canthus. On examination, there was marked hyperemia of the superior bulbar conjunctiva of the left eye. Systemic examination revealed erythematous papules on his trunk and pulmonary infiltrates. CT of the orbits revealed a fusiform enlargement of the left superior oblique muscle and diffuse infiltration of the left temporal region. Biopsy of the left superior oblique muscle and temporal muscle disclosed Congo red deposits that show apple-green birefringence under polarized light. A comprehensive systemic investigation failed to show any disease that could explain the amyloid deposits. The patient was then diagnosed as having primary systemic amyloidosis. We think that this case highlights the necessity of a biopsy in any atypical extraocular muscle enlargement before a diagnosis of myositis.

In this article, we propose a mathematical model that describes the competition between two plant virus strains (MAV and PAV) for both the host plant (oat) and their aphid vectors. We found that although PAV is transmitted by two aphids and MAV by only one, this fact, by itself, does not explain the complete replacement of MAV by PAV in New York State during the period from 1961 through 1976; an interpretation that is in agreement with the theories of A. G. Power. Also, although MAV wins the competition within aphids, we assumed that, in 1961, PAV mutated into a new variant such that this new variant was able to overcome MAV within the plants during a latent period. As shown below, this is sufficient to explain the swap of strains; that is, the dominant MAV was replaced by PAV, also in agreement with Power`s expectations.

Objective. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of irrigating solutions and their combinations against Enterococcus faecalis. Study design. One hundred ten single-rooted human teeth were inoculated with E. faecalis and incubated for 21 days. Teeth were divided according to the irrigant: Group I (GI), 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl); GII, 2.5% NaOCl + 10% citric acid; GIII, 2.5% NaOCl + apple cider vinegar; GIV, apple cider vinegar; GV, 2% chlorhexidine solution; GVI, 1% peracetic acid; GVII, saline solution. Microbiological samples were taken after root canal preparation and 7 days later. Data were submitted to ANOVA (5%). Results. All solutions promoted reduction of E. faecalis after instrumentation, but bacterial counts were higher in the final sample. GI, GV, and GVI had lower bacterial counts than the other groups. Conclusions. The irrigating solutions may present activity but do not eradicate E. faecalis in the root canal system. (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod 2011; 112:396-400)

Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of calcium ions and smear layer removal by using root canal chelators according to flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and scanning electron microscopy. Forty-two human maxillary central incisors were irrigated with 15% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 10% citric acid, 10% sodium citrate, apple vinegar, 5% acetic acid, 5% malic acid, and sodium hypochlorite. The concentration of calcium ions was measured by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, and smear layer removal was determined by scanning electron microscopy. Mean +/- standard deviation, one-way analysis of variance, Tukey-Kramer, Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn, and kappa tests were used for statistical analysis. The use of 15% EDTA resulted in the greatest concentration of calcium ions followed by 10% citric acid; 15% EDTA and 10% citric acid were the most efficient solutions for removal of smear layer. Introduction: The greatest reduction in microhardness of the most superficial layer of dentin of the root canal lumen is desired. The use of chelating agents during biomechanical preparation of root canals removes smear layer, increasing the access of the irrigant into the dentin tubules to allow adequate disinfection, and also reduces dentin microhardness, facilitating the action of endodontic instruments. This study evaluated the effect of different chelating solutions on the microhardness of the most superficial dentin layer from the root canal lumen. Methods: Thirty-five recently extracted single-rooted maxillary central incisors were instrumented, and the roots were longitudinally sectioned in a mesiodistal direction to expose the entire canal extension. The specimens were distributed in seven groups according to the final irrigation: 15% EDTA, 10% citric acid, 5% malic acid, 5% acetic acid, apple vinegar, 10% sodium citrate, and control (no irrigation). A standardized volume of 50 mu L of each chelating solution was used for 5 minutes. Dentin microhardness was measured with a Knoop indenter under a 10-g load and a 15-second dwell time. Data were analyzed statistically by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey-Kramer multiple-comparison test at 5% significance level. Results: EDTA and citric acid had the greatest overall effect, causing a sharp decrease in dentin microhardness without a significant difference (p > .05) from each other. However, both chelators differed significantly from the other solutions (p < .001). Sodium citrate and deionized water were similar to each other (p > .05) and did not affect dentin microhardness. Apple vinegar, acetic acid, and malic acid were similar to each other (p > .05) and presented intermediate results. Conclusion: Except for sodium citrate, all tested chelating solutions reduced microhardness of the most superficial root canal dentin layer. EDTA and citric acid were the most efficient. Breeding methodologies for cultivated lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), an autotetraploid, have changed little over the last 50 years, with reliance on polycross methods and recurrent phenotypic selection. There has been, however, an increase in our understanding of lucerne biology, in particular the genetic relationships between members of the M. sativa complex, as deduced by DNA analysis. Also, the differences in breeding behaviour and vigour of diploids versus autotetraploids, and the underlying genetic causes, are discussed in relation to lucerne improvement. Medicago falcata, a member of the M. sativa complex, has contributed substantially to lucerne improvement in North America, and its diverse genetics would appear to have been under-utilised in Australian programs over the last two decades, despite the reduced need for tolerance to freezing injury in Australian environments. Breeding of lucerne in Australia only commenced on a large scale in 1977, driven by an urgent need to introgress aphid resistance into adapted backgrounds. The release in the early 1980s of lucernes with multiple pest and disease resistance (aphids, Phytophthora, Colletotrichum) had a significant effect on increasing lucerne productivity and persistence in eastern Australia, with yield increases under high disease pressure of up to 300% being recorded over the predominant Australian cultivar, up to 1977, Hunter River. Since that period, irrigated lucerne yields have plateaued, highlighting the need to identify breeding objectives, technologies, and the germplasm that will create new opportunities for increasing performance. This review discusses major goals for lucerne improvement programs in Australia, and provides indications of the germplasm sources and technologies that are likely to deliver the desired outcomes.

To determine the potential for rootstocks to improve avocado quality, 'Hass' fruit from trees on seedling 'Velvick' (SV), clonal 'Velvick' (CV) or clonal 'Duke 7' (CD) rootstocks were harvested in 1999 and 2000, ripened at 20 C immediately after harvest (non-stored) or stored at 5 C for four weeks (stored), and then fruit quality and mineral concentrations determined. In 2000, non-stored CV fruit had lower severity of body rots (5% of flesh volume affected, caused mainly by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) than CD fruit (20%), while body rots severity in stored CV fruit was 20% compared with 38% in stored CD fruit. Stored CV fruit had less severe diffuse discoloration (3% and 9% in 1999 and 2000, respectively) than CD fruit (7% and 20%, respectively). Stored CV fruit also had less severe vascular browning (19%) than CD fruit (33%) in 2000. In both seasons, CV fruit had 15-19% higher flesh calcium concentrations, 17-22% higher flesh boron concentrations, and 14-15% lower flesh nitrogen concentrations than CD fruit. In 2000, CV fruit also had 27% more skin calcium and 14% less skin nitrogen than CD fruit. There were no effects of rootstock on yield, canopy volume, measured length of non-suberized roots, average fruit weight, fruit length: width ratio, skin thickness, dry matter, proportion of the fruit skin purple-black when ripe, or seed mass: fruit weight ratio. These results suggest that there is potential to improve 'Hass' avocado quality through rootstock selection, and that tree and fruit mineral concentrations have a role in this relationship.

The first genetic linkage map of macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia and M. tetraphylla) is presented. The map is based on 56 F-1 progeny of cultivars 'Keauhou' and 'A16'. Eighty-four percent of the 382 markers analysed segregated as Mendelian loci. The two-way pseudo-testcross mapping strategy allowed construction of separate parental cultivar maps. Ninety bridging loci enabled merging of these maps to produce a detailed genetic map of macadamia, 1100 cM in length and spanning 70-80% of the genome. The combined map comprised 24 linkage groups with 265 framework markers: 259 markers from randomly amplified DNA fingerprinting (RAF), five random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and one sequence-tagged microsatellite site (STMS). The RAF marker system unexpectedly revealed 16 codominant markers, one of them a putative microsatellite locus and exhibiting four distinct alleles in the cross. This molecular study is the most comprehensive examination to date of genetic loci of macadamia, and is a major step towards developing marker-assisted selection for this crop.

Esta dissertação inscreve-se no debate sobre educação e política, voltado para análise da relação entre educação, currículo escolar e violência simbólica, na perspectiva do adolescente entre 12 e 17 anos que cumpre medida socioeducativa no Centro de Referência Especializado de Assistência Social – CREAS de Vitória (ES). Tem por objetivo analisar e refletir sobre a inadequação curricular no que se refere às expectativas desses adolescentes. A hipótese sustentada é que há inadequação curricular de um modo geral e, em particular, para atender à condição dos alunos em cumprimento de medida socioeducativa. A pesquisa demonstra que existe uma discrepância grande entre a regulamentação das medidas e a prática no cotidiano escolar desses adolescentes, e um dos grandes entraves para essa adequação é a ausência de protagonismo, ou seja, os professores que trabalham com esses adolescentes e o próprio adolescente não foram ouvidos para a formulação das propostas. Resultado disso é uma escola totalmente desinteressante para esses adolescentes e ineficaz do ponto de vista pedagógico. Teoricamente, o fio condutor desta análise teve como base a violência simbólica a partir de Bourdieu e Passeron e as discussões feitas por Apple e Candau.

O estudo teve como objetivo investigar as ações constituídas por uma escola pública de Ensino Fundamental para o envolvimento de alunos com deficiência e com transtornos globais do desenvolvimento no currículo escolar. Contou com as contribuições teóricas de Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Michel de Certeau e Philippe Meirieu para uma discussão sociológica, filosófica e pedagógica das situações desencadeadas pela pesquisa. No campo do currículo, aproximou-se das teorizações de Silva, Moreira, Apple e Sacristán, dentre outros, por serem teóricos que analisam o trabalho com o conhecimento no contexto escolar. Já no campo da Educação Especial, dialogou com as produções de pesquisadores que postulam pela ideia de que o processo de inclusão escolar pressupõe acesso à escola, bem como permanência e a garantia do direito de apropriação dos conhecimentos socialmente produzidos. Como aporte teórico-metodológico, apoiou-se nos pressupostos da pesquisa-ação colaborativo-crítica que advoga pela possibilidade de, por meio da pesquisa científica, produzir conhecimento sobre a realidade social, promover mudanças nas situações desafiadoras e envolver os sujeitos pesquisados em processos de formação continuada em contexto. O trabalho de pesquisa foi realizado em uma escola de Ensino Fundamental, pertencente à Rede Pública Municipal de Ensino de Vila Velha/ES, envolvendo professores, pedagogos, dirigente escolar, responsáveis pelos discentes e alunos matriculados do 1º ao 6º ano do Ensino Fundamental. O processo de produção de dados se efetivou no período de julho de 2010 a julho de 2011. O pesquisador esteve três vezes por semana no campo de pesquisa, participando das intervenções em sala de aula, dos espaços para planejamento e formação continuada e também de momentos informais na entrada, recreio e saída dos alunos. Para o desenvolvimento do estudo, trabalhou-se com três frentes correlacionadas: a observação participante e a escuta dos discursos produzidos por alunos, professores, equipe técnico-pedagógica e responsáveis pelos discentes sobre o envolvimento dos estudantes com indicativos à Educação Especial no currículo escolar; a constituição de espaços de formação continuada, tomando os dados produzidos na primeira etapa do estudo como elementos de sustentação da dinâmica formativa; o acompanhamento das ações praticadas pela escola para envolvimento das necessidades educacionais dos alunos com indicativos à Educação Especial no currículo escolar, a partir das reflexões desencadeadas nos espaços de formação continuada. Como resultados, a pesquisa aponta a necessidade de advogar pela constituição de currículos escolares mais abertos para contemplar as necessidades de aprendizagem de alunos com comprometimentos físicos, psíquicos, intelectuais ou sensoriais. Esta pesquisa se distancia de lógicas que defendem a flexibilização curricular como um esvaziamento do currículo em nome das condições existenciais dos alunos. Entende que, entre o currículo escolar e a produção de conhecimentos pelos alunos com indicativos à Educação Especial, há uma pluralidade de situações que precisam ser problematizadas pela escola: a leitura produzida sobre a aprendizagem dos alunos; a falta de conhecimento sobre a sexualidade humana; os desafios presentes na relação família e escola; e os pressupostos da normalidade/anormalidade. Esses fatores podem se configurar como elementos que impedem que os alunos obtenham sucesso em sua jornada educativa, porém, em contrapartida, podem ser utilizados como questões a subsidiar espaços de formação continuada. O estudo aponta que, por meio de atitudes colaborativas e críticas entre os profissionais da escola, é possível articular ações que garantam o direito de aprender do estudante com deficiência e com transtornos globais do desenvolvimento na escola de ensino comum.
