Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd. Vessels Scrapbook, 1964-1967, no date

The origins of Upper Lakes Shipping can be traced back to 1931, when Gordon Leitch, the general manager of Toronto elevators, sent Captain Bruce Angus to scout for potential ships that could be used to transport grain. The ship Sarnian was purchased as a result. It soon became apparent that more ships would be needed by the business, and Leitch subsequently partnered with James Norris of the Norris Grain Company, in order to transport their products more economically. The Upper Lakes and St. Lawrence Transportation Company (which later become known as Upper Lakes Shipping), was incorporated in 1932. In 1956, the company bought Port Weller Dry docks. At this point, the company began constructing new vessels designed to meet specific freight and classification needs.

Chamber's Historical Questions with Answers

The book is hardcover and inscribed with an illegible signature, dated 1880 and below that is the signature Margaret J. Woodruff. The preface of the book begins, "The present work is designed to fulfil an important purpose in Education - that of bringing clearly into view the leading facts which are supposed to be gained through a long course of instruction. Without proposing to supersede the elementary books usually employed, it offers a certain test of what is presumed to have been previously learned. With such a work in their hands, Schoolmasters, Tutors, Governesses, or Parents, may at once satisfy themselves as to the degree of knowledge on a variety of subjects attained by the young person under their charge, and for whose intellectual culture they feel a special interest." St. Catharines and District Chamber of Commerce records, 1943-1992, n.d.

The St. Catharines and District Chamber of Commerce merged with the Thorold Chamber of Commerce in 2006. In 2012, they joined a region wide Chamber, becoming part of the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is a "is a non-partisan, non-sectarian association of businesses, groups and individuals who support business growth and effective government fostering a sustainable and vibrant Niagara."

Upper Canada warrant of appraisement: warrant of the Surrogate of the District of Niagara to Isaac Hurst, George Bradshaw and Bernard Frey to appraise the goods and chattels of James Fields Deacon. This item is torn and has been taped. There is a hole where the seal has been and there is a stain. This does not affect the text, June 15, 1801.

Province of Upper Canada Grant (vellum) to George Upper of the Township of Niagara. He was formerly a private in the Lincoln Militia. He is granted 100 acres in the east half of lot no.28 in the 2nd Concession in the Township of Nissouri. This was registered Dec. 1827 – Folio no. 242. This document is extremely stained and torn on the lower half. No effect on the text, Nov. 27, 1827.

Province of Upper Canada Grant to Isaac Fuller

Province of Upper Canada Grant (vellum) to Isaac Fuller of the Township of Niagara. He was formerly a private in the Militia. He is granted 100 acres in the west half of lot no.29 in the 2nd Concession in the Township of Nissouri – Folio no. 233. This was registered Nov. 1833. The outside of this document is quite discoloured. This does not affect the text, Oct. 13, 1833.

Province of Upper Canada Grant (vellum) to Thompson Thair of the Township of Sidney in the County of Hastings. He is granted 200 acres of lot no.28 in the 1st Concession in the Township of Nottawasaga in the County of Simcoe. This was registered June 1836 – Folio no. 262, Oct. 2, 1834.

Province of Upper Canada Grant (vellum) to Elizabeth MacKay of the Township of Charlottenburgh in the County of Glengarry. She was the daughter of William MacKay, a United Empire Loyalist. She was granted 200 acres in the east halves of lots no. 8 and 10 in the 2nd Concession in the Township of Orillia. This was registered June 4, 1836 – Folio 168, May 27, 1836.
