Cancer stem cells belong to a small population of cells within the tumor with properties of self-renewal and differentiation into other cell types. In this study, the behavior of both portions, mesenchymal and epithelial, was evaluated. Six carcinosarcomas (CSs), 11 carcinomas within mixed tumors (CWMTs) grade I, 11 grade II, and 10 grade III were evaluated. In the epithelial portions of the CS and CWMTs was observed immunostaining for antibodies CD44, CD24, Oct-4 and ALDH-1. In the mesenchymal portions of the CS, in the epithelial portions of CMTs grades II and III no immunostaining for ALDH-1 was found. It was concluded that the tumor stem cells are expressed in equal proportions in the epithelial and mesenchymal portions of the CS. No immunostaining in the mesenchymal portions of well-differentiated CWMTs was seen.

The proposal of this study was to compare a wound healing between conventional suture and vaporization with CO2 laser in rats skin. ln such case 24 rats were utilized, making two longitudinal incisions in dorsum by scalpel. ln the left side incision the wound was sutured with nylon thread. ln the right side incision the wound were close by approach and vaporized with C02 laser, defocusing, 8 watts in continuous mode. The wound healing was followed by clinical photographic taking at the times: immediately after the procedure, 24 hours, 3, 7, 14, and 21 days. The results showed an early delay of reparation in healing vaporized in comparison with the sutured one, however occurred 21 days both repair tissue showed the same clinical characteristic. This results suggested that the C02 laser can be used by eventual substitute of suture.

Melanin is a very important pigment to human species, and besides defining skin, eyes and hair color, it is also involved in sun exposure protection. This pigment is classified into two subtypes: pheomelanin, which is responsible for lighter pigmentation and eumelanin, the dark pigment related. Due to this type of melanin variation it is possible to found different phenotypes of hair and skin color. The genetics MC1R variations are described as the most important for diversity in pigmentation, and this gene is directly related to the complex process of melanin synthesis. The use of these variations to phenotype prediction using genetic information has been used in Europe countries to infer physical features from biological samples, with the purpose of directing searches of criminal suspects and victims identification. The aim of this study was to analyze 8 major MC1R polymorphisms in a sample of Brazilian individuals. Analyzing 91 individuals, we observed with higher frequencies the polymorphisms rs1805005:G>T, rs2228479:G>A and rs885479:G>A, which are related to skin and hair colors, as previously showed in literature. These data suggest the possibility of predicting phenotype from genetic polymorphisms in Brazilian population. However it will be necessary to analyze a larger number of individuals to be able to confirm these associations and to perform a more detailed statistical analysis

Cancer biology is a complex and expanding field of science study. Due its complexity, there is a strong motivation to integrate many fields of knowledge to study cancer biology, and biological stoichiometry can make this. Biological stoichiometry is the study of the balance of multiple chemical elements in biological systems. A key idea in biological stoichiometry is the growth rate hypothesis, which states that variation in the carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus stoichiometry of living things is associated with growth rate because of the elevated demands for phosphorusrich ribosomal RNA and other elements necessary to protein synthesis. As tumor cells has high rate proliferation, the growth rate hypothesis can be used in cancer study. In this work the dynamic of two tumors (primary and secondary) and the chemical elements carbon and nitrogen are simulate and analyzed through mathematical models that utilize as central idea biological stoichiometry. Radiotherapy is a multidisciplinary speciality which uses complex equipment and radiation sources for delivery of treatment, using high-energy ionizing radiation to treat cancer at several stages of complexity. Since radiation therapy is a technique which involves a precalculated radiation dose, it shall be established quality assurance programs that provide an efficient and safety treatment. The International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) report No. 50 has recommended dose uniformity between 5% of the prescribed dose throughout the region of interest. This is one of the most primordial points that justify the importance of a suitable attendance of the equipments quality and performance. For quality control, the medical physicist will be involved with establishing and running a Quality Control Program (QCP). He must adapt or develop the procedures of equipment acceptance and commissioning, besides verifying the use of principles and accepted protocols of national and international reports to assure the correct quality, quantity, and placement of radiation during the performance of a radiological procedure, establishing adequate protocols to ensure accurate patient dosimetry. This present work consists of a description of the activities carried through the Sectors of Radiation Therapy of the Hospital of Clinics of the Campinas State University (Unicamp), particularly in the implementation of the Quality Control Program

Diuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) is a substituted urea herbicide widely used in crops of sugar cane, cotton and soybeans. In 1997, this agent has been classified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as known/likely human carcinogen because it induced tumors in the urinary bladder and renal pelvis of rats, and breast and skin of mice exposed to 2500 ppm for feed for two years. A previous study from our group demonstrated dose-response relationship in the gene expression profile associated with severe necrosis on bladder urothelium and increased incidence of simple hyperplasia in male Wistar rats treated with different concentrations of diuron for 20 weeks. To check how early the molecular changes occurs, rats were fed for 7 days with diets containing diuron at 0, 125, 500 or 2500 ppm. The main observations recorded were urothelium ultrastructural alterations and disruptions of molecular pathways associated with cell-cell interaction and the tissue organization maintenance. Particularly, the gene Glypican 3 (Gpc3), a surface proteoglycan related to cellular adhesion and apoptosis induction, was down regulated on urothelium exposed to 2500ppm diuron for 7 days and 20 weeks. The aim of this study was validate by quantitative RT-PCR real time, the reduced Gpc3 gene expression in epithelial cells of the urinary bladder of male Wistar rats treated with different concentrations of diuron for 7 days and 20 weeks. The endogenous control of the quantitative PCR real time technique was the β-actin gene and the target was the gene Gpc3. The relative quantification (RQ) was obtained by the method of relative quantification 2-ΔΔCt . Animals exposed to diuron for 7 days or for 20 weeks presented reduction of Gpc3 gene expression compared to the control group. This reduction was statistically significant only for the 7 days study. The paper presents the radiometric parameters determined by the medical physicist during routine radiotherapy planning service in cases of breast cancer . The contours of the breast volume in patients undergoing radiation breast tumors at the Hospital das Clinicas, Faculty of Medicine , UNESP, Botucatu ( HCFMB ) during the year 2012 were analyzed . In order to analyze the influence of physical and radiometric parameters for the determination of the dose distribution of irradiated breast volume , four measurements of isodose curves were prepared in four different heights breast , and compared with the isodose curves plotted computationally . In the routine of planning , the medical physicist must determine the isodose curve that gives the best dose distribution homogeneity in the irradiated volume . The choice of the treatment plan can be done by dedicated computer systems , which require significantly costly investments available services having better financial support . In the Service of Medical Physics , Department of Radiotherapy , HC FMB , we use a two-dimensional software for determination of isodose curves , however , this software is out of date and frequently becomes inoperable due to the lack of maintenance and it is a closed system without feasibility of interference from computer professionals . This fact requires manual preparation of isodose curves , which are subject to uncertainties due to the subjectivity in the clinical interpretation of medical radiation oncologist and medical physicist responsible for planning , plus dispendiar significant calculation time . The choice of the optimal isodose curve depends on the energy of the radiation beam , the geometry and dimensions of the irradiated area . Conto de fadas: Pele de asno de Charels Perrault, e sua retomada na modernidade por Marina Colasanti

Como base de estudo para esta pesquisa, buscaremos a comparação dos contos de fadas Pele de Asno de Charles Perrault, e sua retomada na modernidade em Entre a Espada e a Rosa por Marina Colasanti. O qual proveniente da cultura oral vem a encantar crianças e adultos por toda as gerações. Esses tão conhecidos contos sempre tiveram, como objetivo, desde seu nascimento, no século XVII, a perpetuação de valores e condutas a serem seguidas. E que hoje vem sendo utilizada como um instrumento superficial e didático, reduzindo as grandes obras clássicas em meras historinhas para passar o tempo. Recebendo ainda a critica direta que tal gênero vem determinar valores nas crianças, trataremos de analisar esses contos através das considerações apontadas por Propp em seus estudos. Assim tem-se como objetivos norteadores desta pesquisa, a comparação entre as características dessas narrativas, mantendo seus contextos histórico; as funções atribuídas pelo estruturalista russo em ambas as narrativas e suas representações na vida, contrapondo as criticas apontadas a cerca desse gênero literário
