In Mozambique, the portuguese language is considered the official language, second language, national language and competes with more than twenty Bantu languages spoken by the majority of population. The standard norm lose away their floor to the Mozambican Portuguese which carries own characteristics pertaining to the sociolinguistic context of the country. Schools attempt their best, but they cannot teach the European standard due the multilingual and Portuguese contact with African languages, a fact that is reflected in the media and in the literature through their oral and written forms. These difficulties result in high rates of failures due to problems encountered in using the European standard by teachers and writers who prepare the school books. This research suggests the standardization of the Mozambican variant as well as the preparation of dictionaries and grammars illustrating the sociolinguistic reality of Mozambique in order to improve the quality of education. It also emphasizes the need for a self-esteem spirit on Mozambicans in general as a conduit to eliminate the soaring bias that Mozambicans can not speak portuguese language

Based on the assertions of the Theory of Linguistic Variation and Change, this paper proposes a discussion about the possible action of linguistic norms over two variable phenomena in Brazilian Portuguese: the position of clitic pronouns associated with a single verb, and the use of prepositions with verbal complements indicating a ?goal/recipient?. By the analysis of data from the newspapers from São Paulo and Rio Claro between (the years of) 1900 and 1915, we intend to describe each phenomenon; compare these descriptions and evaluate the role played by the standard and the common usage which is (already) perceptible in the ?paulistas? continuous published pages of that period.

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate mandibular and maxillary changes induced by the use of Herbst applianceand by natural growth through oblique cephalometric radiographs in children with Class II division 1 malocclusion with mandibular retrusion. A sample of 49 individuals with age ranging from 8 to 10 years old (before growth peak) with Class II division 1, were into two groups: Herbst treated group (n=24) and control group (n=25). Both groups were paired for gender and chronological age. Statistical analysis was performed through Student’s t test. The Herbst appliance promoted the Class II correction in a 7 months period by mesialization of lower permanent first molars and distalization of upper permanent first molars. The Herbst appliance had no influence over the mandibular structure or the mandibular length. It was concluded that early treatment with Herbst appliance corrected the Class II malocclusion by means of dentoalveolar changes.

The ability to tridimensionally evaluate pathological and anatomical areas, in apical surgery planning, presents a number of advantages. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was developed for dental applications. This paper aims to present a literature review on CBCT, highlighting its advantages over both conventional computed tomography (CT) and radiography. Moreover, its clinical applications in apical surgery are discussed. LITERATURE REVIEW AND CONCLUSION: Unlikely CT, CBCT captures a volume of data in a single 360º rotation, providing benefits such as higher accuracy, better resolution, reduced scanning time and reduced radiation dose. In the maxillofacial region, CBCT has been mainly used in the assessment of dento-alveolar pathology and oral traumatology. CBCT provides a better diagnosis and quantitative information on periodontal bone levels than conventional radiography. It has also been used for patients requiring surgical facial reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, and more complex tooth extractions. Besides that, it seems to be a significant tool in modern endodontic practice, presenting useful applications in apical surgery.

Introduction: The request of three-dimensional images (3D) of the dentomaxillofacial complex has increased. Hence, new possibilities for assessment, treatment as well as follow-up after treatment have increased their importance with the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The images in two dimensions (2D) have inherent problems that can be solved with treedimensional images assessment. Objectives: To clarify the main doubts about the operational mechanism of complementary diagnostic method; to explain the advantages and disadvantages, to discuss the effective radiation dose and possible applications in orthodontia. Conclusion: The information generated by 2D images from the CBCT does not show differences that may endanger the orthodontic planning when compared with the images of 2D conventional radiographs. The effective radiation dose received by the patient should not be considered as a limiting factor of the tomography exam request.

Aiming to evaluate the methodologies of surveys related with the specifications of Geo-referencing Rural Parcels in Brazil, established by INCRA (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform), in attendance to the Law 10.267/01, and considering aspects of precision and accuracy, a test area was set up in the Assentamento Florestan Fernandes, in the county of Presidente Bernardes, SP. This area was subdivided in three sub-areas in order to simulate the existence of three contiguous rural parcels. The first stage of work consisted in the implantation and determination of the control points coordinates in their respective areas. These control points were determined by the process of direct transport, using dual frequency (L1/L2) GPS receivers and through the process of traverse with baselines of up to 20 km, using single frequency receivers (L1). The coordinates of the points of the perimeter of the three sub-areas were determined using single frequency GPS receivers, from two survey methods, both using static relative positioning. The first one, so called traverse, each point that delimits the property was occupied successively, starting from the control point and closing at another. In other, denominated double irradiation, each point of the property was irradiated from two control points. These procedures were accomplished with the intention to define and to implement a mistake control strategy, to realize redundancy measurements and to use an adjustment method correctly, to obtain trustworthily values in the patterns demanded in each kind of survey. With the data collected and processed some analyses could be accomplished from the discrepancies between the coordinates obtained by different methodologies. The results show that this test area may be used to validate other methodologies and equipments. The results were satisfactory and attended the specifications of Geo-referencing Rural Parcel.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase protein that has been recently correlated with obesity and insulin resistance. Therefore, we first examined whether human recombinant SAA (rSAA) could affect the proliferation, differentiation and metabolism of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. DESIGN: Preadipocytes were treated with rSAA and analyzed for changes in viability and [H-3-methyl]-thymidine incorporation as well as cell cycle perturbations using flow cytometry analysis. The mRNA expression profiles of adipogenic factors during the differentiation protocol were also analyzed using real-time PCR. After differentiation, 2-deoxy-[1,2-H-3]-glucose uptake and glycerol release were evaluated. RESULTS: rSAA treatment caused a 2.6-fold increase in cell proliferation, which was consistent with the results from flow cytometry showing that rSAA treatment augmented the percentage of cells in the S phase (60.9 +/- 0.54%) compared with the control cells (39.8 +/- 2.2%, ***P<0.001). The rSAA-induced cell proliferation was mediated by the ERK1/2 signaling pathway, which was assessed by pretreatment with the inhibitor PD98059. However, the exposure of 3T3-L1 cells to rSAA during the differentiation process resulted in attenuated adipogenesis and decreased expression of adipogenesis-related factors. During the first 72 h of differentiation, rSAA inhibited the differentiation process by altering the mRNA expression kinetics of adipogenic transcription factors and proteins, such as PPAR gamma 2 (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma 2), C/EBP beta (CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta) and GLUT4. rSAA prevented the intracellular accumulation of lipids and, in fully differentiated cells, increased lipolysis and prevented 2-deoxy-[1,2-H-3]-glucose uptake, which favors insulin resistance. Additionally, rSAA stimulated the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha, and upregulated SAA3 mRNA expression during adipogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: We showed that rSAA enhanced proliferation and inhibited differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and altered insulin sensitivity in differentiated cells. These results highlight the complex role of SAA in the adipogenic process and support a direct link between obesity and its co-morbidities such as type II diabetes.
