Single-phase Ba0.5Sr0.5(Ti0.80Sn0.20)O-3 (BST:Sn) powders with perovskite structure were prepared by the soft chemical method. Infrared data indicates that the BST:Sn powder is carbonate free while Raman analysis has shown that the transversal (TO) and longitudinal (LO) optical modes tend to disappear with tin addition. The electron diffraction pattern of the BST:Sn powder showed an interplanar distance of 3.94 angstrom characteristic of the pseudo-cubic structure. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, we report on the synthesis of SrMoO4 powders by co-precipitation method and processed in a microwave-hydrothermal at 413 K for 5 h. These powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). XRD analyses revealed that the SrMoO4 powders are free of secondary phases and crystallize in a tetragonal structure. FT-Raman investigations showed the presence of Raman-active vibration modes correspondent for this molybdate. UV-vis technique was employed to determine the optical band gap of this material. SrMoO4 powders exhibit an intense PL emission at room temperature with maximum peak at 540 nm (green region) when excited by 488 nm wavelength of an argon ion laser. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Glasses having the composition (100 - x)As2P2S8-xGa(2)S(3) with x ranging from 0 to 50% were investigated to determine the compositional effect on properties and local structure. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and the stability parameter against crystallization (T-x - T-g) increased with the addition of Ga2S3. The structure of these glasses was probed by Raman scattering, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance. on the basis of the observed vibrations and the strength of the P-31-P-31 homonuclear magnetic dipolar coupling, two scenarios can be proposed for the structural evolution induced by the addition of Ga2S3. For x <= 20% we may have the formation of GaS4E- groups (E = nonbonding electron), and for x >= 30% we have depolymerization of the As2P2S8 units and the formation of a network of GaPS4 units with each PS4/2 unit (Q(4)) species carrying a single positive formal charge.

In this paper 4.5SiO(2)-3Al(2)O(3-x)Nb(2)O(5)-2CaO powders have been synthesized using a chemical process the Polymeric Precursor Method. The process of glass formation has been investigated by XRD and DTA, the results confirm that the prepared powders are glasses. Experimental data show that amount of Nb2O5 had a considerable effect on the T-g values. The structures of glasses prepared. have been determined by Si-29 and Al-27 MAS NMR and the results indicated that the network is formed by SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedral linked and probably Si-O-Nb bonds are present in the vitreous network. Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are currently used for various dental applications such as luting cements or as restorative materials. The calcium fluoro-alumino-silicate system is the basis for degradable glasses used to obtain the GICs. The purpose of the present paper is to add niobium to conventional glass system because according to previous papers niobium addition improves the chemical resistance and the mechanical properties of glasses. Therefore, the GICs prepared from these glasses would result in cements with higher chemical and mechanical resistance. The niobium fluoride powders were prepared using the sol-gel process and were characterized by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis (DTA) and Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR. The results obtained by XRD showed that the powders prepared by this method are glass-ceramic. In the DTA curve was detected the presence of T-g and T-c temperatures. The analysis of MAS NMR spectra indicated that the framework of the powders is formed by SiO4 and AlO4 linked tetrahedra which are essential structures to yield the cements. Thus, we concluded that niobium fluoride silicate powders can be used in the preparation of GICs. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The mechanical activation is one of the most effective method for obtaining highly disperse system due to mechanical action stress fields form in solids during milling procedure. This effect results in changes of free energy, leading to release of heat, formation of a new surface, formation of different crystal lattice defects and initiation of solid-state chemical reaction. The accumulated deformation energy determines irreversible changes of crystal structure and consequently microstructure resulting in the change of their properties. Mechanochemical processing route has been developed recently for the production of intermetallic and alloy compounds. The intrinsic advantage of this process is that the solid-state reaction is activated due to mechanical energy instead of the temperature. It was shown that the chemical reactivity of starting materials could be improved significantly after mechanochemical activation and, subsequently, the calcination temperature was reduced. Besides, it was apparent that the mechanochemical treatment could enhance the reactivity of constituent oxides; however, the sintering process could not be avoided to develop the desired ceramics. A novel mechanochemical technique for synthesis of fine-grained perovskite structured powders has shown that it is possible to form perovskite at room temperature. The effect of milling on the formation of perovskite structure of barium titanate (BT), lead titanate (PT), PZT, PZN, magnesium niobate (PMN) and LM ceramic materials was analyzed. The dielectric properties of sintered ceramics are comparable with those prepared by other methods in the literature. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

PLZT ceramics belong to one of the very important groups of functional materials that make a basis for the production of a large range of electronic devices. The microstructure and properties of ceramics depend on the powder preparation and thermal processing conditions. Various techniques have been used to obtain chemically homogeneous and fine starting powders. PLZT powders have been prepared by two different production routes: by a modified Pechini method, using a polymeric precursor method (PMM) and by a partial oxalate method. A two-step sintering process, including a hot pressing, was carried out at 1100 and 1200degreesC Distinct phases obtained during the sintering process have been investigated by SEM and EDS techniques and dielectric properties such as permittivity and dielectric loss were measured in a frequency range from 1 to 20 kHz.. A significant difference in microstructure and dielectric properties, depending on powder origin and sintering procedure, has been noticed.
