The basis of this thesis was to optimize heat pump that uses multiple heat sources to get competitive heating system for residential building when life cycle costs are considered. The objectives were to compile necessary information to calculate life cycle costs for heating system of residential building and start to compose of designing program for heat pump based heating systems. Examinations were made for the purchase energy need of residential building. Features of heat pump, considered refrigerant and potential heat sources were examined to find out heat production potential of heat pumps. Necessary information for life cycle cost calculation was also examined. Collected data was used in two case analyses to design selected heat production systems and calculate their life cycle costs. On the basis of case analyses heat pump based hybrid heat production systems are very competitive on life cycle cost comparison against district heating when residential building uses a lot of energy. New buildings use considerably less energy and achieved energy cost savings with heat pump systems may not be enough to cover the relatively high investment cost in reasonable time period compared to district heating system. The calculation method was found to require further development to at least include the cooling energy need of the building. Cooling demand will continue to grow in the future, which improves the heat pump based heat production systems competitiveness compared to other systems.

Työn lähtökohtana oli tarkastella hankesuunnitteluvaiheen lämmitysjärjestelmän valintaa ja siihen vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Työssä käytettiin Case-tarkasteluna Espoon Finnoon aluetta. Rakennusosakeyhtiö Hartela voitti Espoon Finnoon ensimmäisen (Finnoo I) asemakaava-alueen suunnittelu ja toteuttamisen ideakilpailun vuoden 2012 lopussa. Finnoo I alueelle rakennettaan noin 155 000 kerrosmetriä eli huoneistot noin 4000 asukkaalle. Alueen ra-kennukset suunnitellaan energiatehokkaaksi, sekä lämmityksessä ja sähkössä on tarkoitus käyttää uusiutuvaa energiaa. Työssä käsiteltiin alueellista lämmitysjärjestelmää ja sen vaihtoehtoetoja. Työssä tutkittiin myös aurinkosähkön käytön mahdollisuutta alueella. Ensin työssä mitoitettiin rakennusten energiankulutuksen muodostuminen alustavien suunnitelmien ja arvioitujen ominaiskulu-tusten avulla. Sen jälkeen käytiin läpi mahdolliset lämmitysjärjestelmät, joita alueella voi-daan käyttää ja arvioitiin niiden aiheuttamat elinkaarikustannukset koko laskenta-ajan jak-solla. Elinkaarilaskentaan valittiin viisi toteutuskelpoisinta järjestelmää ja niistä laskettiin elinkaarikustannukset. Lisäksi laskettiin järjestelmien hiilidioksidipäästöt vuosittain. Työn tulosten pohjalta voidaan olettaa, että kokonaisvaltaisesti yhtä ainoata parasta lämmi-tysjärjestelmää alueelle ei ole, vaan kaukolämpöä, maalämpöä ja hybridijärjestelmiä tulisi käyttää alueella sekaisin. Lisäksi alue on mahdollista rakentaa niin, että alue käyttäisi nolla-lämpöalueen periaatetta, niin että rakennukset, jotka tuottavat lämpöä liikaa myisivät ne sitä rakennuksille jotka tarvitsevat sitä. Aurinkosähkön potentiaali alueella on hyvä ja sitä käyttämällä voidaan rakennusten E-lukua ja hiilidioksidipäästöjä laskea.

Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena oli tarkastella biokaasun liikennekäyttöön tarvittavia teknologisia ratkaisuja ja tehdä kustannusvertailua erilaisten jakeluvaihtoehtojen välillä Mikkelin ympäristön case-tapauksessa. Työn teoriaosassa on esitelty teknologisia vaihtoehtoja liikennebiokaasun jakelulle sekä eri teknologioiden kustannuksia. Tietämys eri teknologiavaihtoehdoista ja niiden hinnoista on muodostettu kirjallisuuskatsauksen, asiantuntijahaastatteluiden sekä saatujen tarjousten perusteella. Työn empiriaosassa on tarkasteltu kolmen eri jakeluskenaarion kustannuksia käyttäen elinkaarikustannuslaskentaa, sekä toimintoperusteista kustannuslaskentaa. Liikennebiokaasun jakelun kustannuksiksi työn case-tapauksissa saatiin jakelutavasta riippuen 0,37 €/kg – 1,02 €/kg (2,64 snt/kWh – 7,29 snt/kWh). Edullisin vaihtoehto liikennebiokaasun jakeluun on työn perusteella myydä tuotettu kaasu tuotantolaitoksella. Jos kaasua siirretään tankattavaksi tytärasemalle, on vaihtoehtoina paineistettu kaasu siirtokontein, nesteytetty kaasu trailerilla tai putkisiirto. Halvin siirtokeino tämän työn skenaarioissa oli kaasun putkisiirto.

Tässä työssä tarkastellaan elinkaarilaskentamalleja ja niihin liittyvää kritiikkiä. Työn tarkoitus on kartoittaa olemassa olevia malleja ja niiden erityispiirteitä. Toisena tutkimustavoitteena pohditaan elinkaarilaskentaan liittyvää kritiikkiä ja epäkohtia. Työssä esitellään elinkaarilaskennan käsitteitä, teoriaa, taustaa ja malleja. Työhön on valittu käsiteltäväksi 10 erilaista elinkaarilaskentamallia, joiden ominaisuuksia tarkastellaan. Kritiikkiä elinkaarilaskentaa kohtaan tarkastellaan omana kokonaisuutenaan. Päähavaintoina elinkaarilaskentamallit ovat spesifejä ja soveltuvat pitkälti vain niiden alkuperäiseen laskentakohteeseen. Valituista malleista on havaittavissa kolme keskeistä pääsuuntausta, joihin laskenta keskittyy. Nämä suuntaukset ovat ympäristökeskeiset, huoltokeskeiset ja optimointikeskeiset LCC-mallit.

Objective of the thesis is to create a value based pricing model for marine engines and study the feasibility of implementing such model in the sales organization of a specific segment in the case company’s marine division. Different pricing strategies, concept of “value”, and how perceptions of value can be influenced through value based marketing are presented as theoretical background for the value based pricing model. Forbis and Mehta’s Economic Value to Customer (EVC) was selected as framework to create the value based pricing model for marine engines. The EVC model is based on calculating and comparing life-cycle costs of the reference product and competing products, thus showing the quantifiable value of the company’s own product compared to competition. In the applied part of the thesis, the components of the EVC model are identified for a marine diesel engine, the components are explained, and an example calculation created in Excel is presented. When examining the possibilities to implement in practice a value based pricing strategy based on the EVC model, it was found that the lack of precise information on competing products is the single biggest obstacle to use EVC exactly as presented in the literature. It was also found that sometimes necessary communication channels are missing and that there is simply a lack of interest from some clients and product end-users part to spend time on studying the life-cycle costs of the product. Information on the company’s own products is however sufficient and the sales force is capable to communicate to sufficiently high executive levels in the client organizations. Therefore it is suggested to focus on quantifying and communicating the company’s own value proposition. The dynamic nature of the business environment (variance in applications in which engines are installed, different clients, competition, end-clients etc.) means also that each project should be created its own EVC calculation. This is demanding in terms of resources needed, thus it is suggested to concentrate on selected projects and buyers, and to clients where the necessary communication channels to right levels in the customer organization are available. Finally, it should be highlighted that as literature suggests, implementing a value based pricing strategy is not possible unless the whole business approach is value based.

Työn tavoitteena oli rakentaa käyttökelpoinen elinkaarikustannusmalli, jonka avulla voidaan arvioida investoitavien uusien koneiden elinkaaren aikaisia kustannuksia. Elinkaarikustannusmalli on rakennettu Microsoft Excel -ohjelman avulla. Mallin tavoitteena oli saada tarkempaa tietoa koneiden aiheuttamista elinkaarikustannuksista. Aiemmin tällaista mallia ei ole ollut käytössä, vaan investointien paremmuutta on paljolti verrattu takaisinmaksuajan ja hankintahinnan perusteella. Työssä hyödynnetään investointi- ja elinkaarilaskennan teorioita elinkaarikustannusmallin rakentamiseen. Työn empiirisessä osiossa käydään läpi, miten elinkaarikustannusmalli on rakennettu ja millaisia ominaisuuksia malli sisältää. Empiirisessä osassa myös testataan rakennetun mallin toimivuutta ja lasketaan elinkaarikustannukset yhdelle koneinvestoinnille. Teoriaosuudessa käsiteltiin myös elinkaarituottoja mallin jatkokehityksen kannalta. Työn tuloksena saatiin rakennettua käyttökelpoinen elinkaarikustannusmalli, jonka ominaisuuksina ovat sen helppo käyttö ja yksinkertaisuus. Mallia voidaan käyttää useammalle koneinvestointivaihtoehdolle samanaikaisesti ja sitä voidaan helposti laajentaa tulevaisuudessa.

Efficient production and consumption of energy has become the top priority of national and international policies around the world. Manufacturing industries have to address the requirements of the government in relation to energy saving and ecologically sustainable products. These industries are also concerned with energy and material usage due to their rising costs. Therefore industries have to find solutions that can support environmental preservation yet maintain competitiveness in the market. Welding, a major manufacturing process, consumes a great deal of material and energy. It is a crucial process in improving a product’s life-cycle cost, strength, quality and reliability. Factors which lead to weld related inefficiencies have to be effectively managed, if industries are to meet their quality requirements and fulfil a high-volume production demand. Therefore it is important to consider some practical strategies in welding process for optimization of energy and material consumption. The main objective of this thesis is to explore the methods of minimizing the ecological footprint of the welding process and methods to effectively manage its material and energy usage in the welding process. The author has performed a critical review of the factors including improved weld power source efficiency, efficient weld techniques, newly developed weld materials, intelligent welding systems, weld safety measures and personnel training. The study lends strong support to the fact that the use of eco-friendly welding units and the quality weld joints obtained with minimum possible consumption of energy and materials should be the main directions of improvement in welding systems. The study concludes that, gradually implementing the practical strategies mentioned in this thesis would help the manufacturing industries to achieve on the following - reduced power consumption, enhanced power control and manipulation, increased deposition rate, reduced cycle time, reduced joint preparation time, reduced heat affected zones, reduced repair rates, improved joint properties, reduced post-weld operations, improved automation, improved sensing and control, avoiding hazardous conditions and reduced exposure of welder to potential hazards. These improvement can help in promotion of welding as a green manufacturing process.

Nopeasti muuttuvissa kilpailutilanteissa varsinkin pienet ja keskisuuret ohjelmistoyritykset joutuvat kilpailuetuja saavuttaakseen tekemään strategisia päätöksiä, joiden vaikutukset voidaan todeta vasta pitkän ajan kuluttua. Sen vuoksi yritysjohto tarvitsee päätöksentekoa varten tukijärjestelmiä, jotka sekä tuottavat informaatiota päätöksenteon tueksi että auttavat vähentämään päätöksistä aiheutuneita riskejä. Tämän työn tavoitteena oli kehittää ohjelmistoyritysten ohjelmistotuoteliiketoimintaa varten elinkaarikustannusmalli, jonka avulla yritysjohto voi arvioida ohjelmistotuotteiden koko-naiskustannuksia koko elinkaaren ajalta. Elinkaarikustannusmallia tutkittiin sekä elinkaarikustannusten että ohjelmistotuotantoprosessien teoreettisissa viitekehyksissä. Empiirinen tieto kerättiin tutkimukseen osallistuneen ohjelmistoyrityksen avulla. Tutkimuksessa kehitetty elinkaarikustannusmalli eroaa monista muista tutkituista kustannusmalleista siinä, että se lähestyy elinkaarikustannusten problematiikkaa strategisesta näkökulmasta, kun taas monet muut mallit toteuttavat tietoteknistä lähestymistapaa. Siten ohjelmistoyrityksen johto voi ohjata tuoteliiketoimintaa osana strategista päätöksentekoa sekä tuotteen elinkaaren kokonaiskustannusten avulla että elinkaarikustannusmallin epäsuorien vaikutusten kautta

Diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää, kuinka sähkösuodattimella voidaan vaikuttaa sisäilman laatuun ja kuinka kilpailukykyinen vaihtoehto pienkiinteistöissä sähkösuodatin on perinteisiin kuitusuodattimiin verrattuna. Teoriaosassa tarkasteltiin, kuinka ilman hengitettävät hiukkaset muodostuvat ja miten ne vaikuttavat sisäilman laatuun sekä ihmisten terveyteen. Tarkasteltiin hiukkasten koon, lukumäärän, massan ja pinta-alan yhteyksiä niiden terveysvaikutuksiin. Ultrapienet hiukkaset ovat terveydelle haitallisimpia, koska hiukkasten lukumäärä ja pinta-ala lisäävät terveyshaittoja enemmän kuin hiukkasten massa. Tutkittiin pienkiinteistöjen ilmanvaihtoratkaisuja ja erilaisia tuloilmanpuhdistus-menetelmiä. Soveltavassa osassa tarkasteltiin sähkösuodattimen toimintaa ja sen mahdollisuuksia sisäilman parantajana verrattuna perinteisiin kuitusuodattimiin. Tehtiin sähkösuodattimen ja kuitusuodattimen välinen elinkaarikustannusvertailu keskisuurelle omakotitalolle. Kirjallisuuden ja tutkimushavaintojen perusteella sähkösuodattimen suurin etu muihin suodattimiin verrattuna on sen kyky poistaa kaiken kokoisia, myös ultrapieniä, hengitettäviä hiukkasia ja siten tehokkaasti vähentää hengitettävien hiukkasten lukumäärää ja pinta-alaa. Tällä voi olla vaikutusta yleisten terveyshaittojen ja ympäristöherkkyyden ennaltaehkäisemisessä. Ympäristöherkkyyteen sairastuneiden oireiluun sähkösuodatin voi tuottaa helpotusta kotioloissa ja siirrettävän ilmanpuhdistimen avulla myös työpaikoilla. Elinkaarikustannusvertailun perusteella selvisi, että sähkösuodatin on kalliimmasta hinnastaan huolimatta kokonaiskustannuksiltaan selvästi edullisempi vaihtoehto kuin kuitusuodattimet. Sähkösuodattimen haasteena on uuden teknologian lanseeraaminen pientalorakentamiseen. Pienrakennusten tuloilman puhdistusmenetelmien kehittämisellä olisi mahdollista parantaa suomalaisten elämänlaatua ja saavuttaa merkittäviä säästöjä terveydenhoitokuluissa.

The country has witnessed tremendous increase in the vehicle population and increased axle loading pattern during the last decade, leaving its road network overstressed and leading to premature failure. The type of deterioration present in the pavement should be considered for determining whether it has a functional or structural deficiency, so that appropriate overlay type and design can be developed. Structural failure arises from the conditions that adversely affect the load carrying capability of the pavement structure. Inadequate thickness, cracking, distortion and disintegration cause structural deficiency. Functional deficiency arises when the pavement does not provide a smooth riding surface and comfort to the user. This can be due to poor surface friction and texture, hydro planning and splash from wheel path, rutting and excess surface distortion such as potholes, corrugation, faulting, blow up, settlement, heaves etc. Functional condition determines the level of service provided by the facility to its users at a particular time and also the Vehicle Operating Costs (VOC), thus influencing the national economy. Prediction of the pavement deterioration is helpful to assess the remaining effective service life (RSL) of the pavement structure on the basis of reduction in performance levels, and apply various alternative designs and rehabilitation strategies with a long range funding requirement for pavement preservation. In addition, they can predict the impact of treatment on the condition of the sections. The infrastructure prediction models can thus be classified into four groups, namely primary response models, structural performance models, functional performance models and damage models. The factors affecting the deterioration of the roads are very complex in nature and vary from place to place. Hence there is need to have a thorough study of the deterioration mechanism under varied climatic zones and soil conditions before arriving at a definite strategy of road improvement. Realizing the need for a detailed study involving all types of roads in the state with varying traffic and soil conditions, the present study has been attempted. This study attempts to identify the parameters that affect the performance of roads and to develop performance models suitable to Kerala conditions. A critical review of the various factors that contribute to the pavement performance has been presented based on the data collected from selected road stretches and also from five corporations of Kerala. These roads represent the urban conditions as well as National Highways, State Highways and Major District Roads in the sub urban and rural conditions. This research work is a pursuit towards a study of the road condition of Kerala with respect to varying soil, traffic and climatic conditions, periodic performance evaluation of selected roads of representative types and development of distress prediction models for roads of Kerala. In order to achieve this aim, the study is focused into 2 parts. The first part deals with the study of the pavement condition and subgrade soil properties of urban roads distributed in 5 Corporations of Kerala; namely Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode. From selected 44 roads, 68 homogeneous sections were studied. The data collected on the functional and structural condition of the surface include pavement distress in terms of cracks, potholes, rutting, raveling and pothole patching. The structural strength of the pavement was measured as rebound deflection using Benkelman Beam deflection studies. In order to collect the details of the pavement layers and find out the subgrade soil properties, trial pits were dug and the in-situ field density was found using the Sand Replacement Method. Laboratory investigations were carried out to find out the subgrade soil properties, soil classification, Atterberg limits, Optimum Moisture Content, Field Moisture Content and 4 days soaked CBR. The relative compaction in the field was also determined. The traffic details were also collected by conducting traffic volume count survey and axle load survey. From the data thus collected, the strength of the pavement was calculated which is a function of the layer coefficient and thickness and is represented as Structural Number (SN). This was further related to the CBR value of the soil and the Modified Structural Number (MSN) was found out. The condition of the pavement was represented in terms of the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) which is a function of the distress of the surface at the time of the investigation and calculated in the present study using deduct value method developed by U S Army Corps of Engineers. The influence of subgrade soil type and pavement condition on the relationship between MSN and rebound deflection was studied using appropriate plots for predominant types of soil and for classified value of Pavement Condition Index. The relationship will be helpful for practicing engineers to design the overlay thickness required for the pavement, without conducting the BBD test. Regression analysis using SPSS was done with various trials to find out the best fit relationship between the rebound deflection and CBR, and other soil properties for Gravel, Sand, Silt & Clay fractions. The second part of the study deals with periodic performance evaluation of selected road stretches representing National Highway (NH), State Highway (SH) and Major District Road (MDR), located in different geographical conditions and with varying traffic. 8 road sections divided into 15 homogeneous sections were selected for the study and 6 sets of continuous periodic data were collected. The periodic data collected include the functional and structural condition in terms of distress (pothole, pothole patch, cracks, rutting and raveling), skid resistance using a portable skid resistance pendulum, surface unevenness using Bump Integrator, texture depth using sand patch method and rebound deflection using Benkelman Beam. Baseline data of the study stretches were collected as one time data. Pavement history was obtained as secondary data. Pavement drainage characteristics were collected in terms of camber or cross slope using camber board (slope meter) for the carriage way and shoulders, availability of longitudinal side drain, presence of valley, terrain condition, soil moisture content, water table data, High Flood Level, rainfall data, land use and cross slope of the adjoining land. These data were used for finding out the drainage condition of the study stretches. Traffic studies were conducted, including classified volume count and axle load studies. From the field data thus collected, the progression of each parameter was plotted for all the study roads; and validated for their accuracy. Structural Number (SN) and Modified Structural Number (MSN) were calculated for the study stretches. Progression of the deflection, distress, unevenness, skid resistance and macro texture of the study roads were evaluated. Since the deterioration of the pavement is a complex phenomena contributed by all the above factors, pavement deterioration models were developed as non linear regression models, using SPSS with the periodic data collected for all the above road stretches. General models were developed for cracking progression, raveling progression, pothole progression and roughness progression using SPSS. A model for construction quality was also developed. Calibration of HDM–4 pavement deterioration models for local conditions was done using the data for Cracking, Raveling, Pothole and Roughness. Validation was done using the data collected in 2013. The application of HDM-4 to compare different maintenance and rehabilitation options were studied considering the deterioration parameters like cracking, pothole and raveling. The alternatives considered for analysis were base alternative with crack sealing and patching, overlay with 40 mm BC using ordinary bitumen, overlay with 40 mm BC using Natural Rubber Modified Bitumen and an overlay of Ultra Thin White Topping. Economic analysis of these options was done considering the Life Cycle Cost (LCC). The average speed that can be obtained by applying these options were also compared. The results were in favour of Ultra Thin White Topping over flexible pavements. Hence, Design Charts were also plotted for estimation of maximum wheel load stresses for different slab thickness under different soil conditions. The design charts showed the maximum stress for a particular slab thickness and different soil conditions incorporating different k values. These charts can be handy for a design engineer. Fuzzy rule based models developed for site specific conditions were compared with regression models developed using SPSS. The Riding Comfort Index (RCI) was calculated and correlated with unevenness to develop a relationship. Relationships were developed between Skid Number and Macro Texture of the pavement. The effort made through this research work will be helpful to highway engineers in understanding the behaviour of flexible pavements in Kerala conditions and for arriving at suitable maintenance and rehabilitation strategies. This thesis is aimed to initiate implementing sustainable building construction in the kingdom of Bahrain, i.e. Building-Integration PhotoVoltaic (BIPV) or Wind Energy (BIWE). It highlights the main constrains that discourage such modern concept in building and construction. Three groups have been questioned using a questionnaire. These are the policy and decision makers, the leading consultants and the contractors. The main constrains of the dissemination of BIVP and BIWE, according to the policy and decision makers, are: lack of knowledge and awareness of the public in sustainable technology, low cost of electricity, low cost of gas and oil and difficulty in applying local environmental taxes. The consultants had attributed the constrains to ignorance of life cycle cost of PV and Wind turbines systems, lack of education and knowledge in sustainable design, political system, shortage of markets importing sustainable technologies and client worries in profitability and pay-back period. The contractors are found to be very enthusiastic and ready to take over any sustainable building project and prefer to have a construction manger to coordinate between the design and contracting team. Design and Build is found the favorable procurement method in Bahrain for conducting BIPV or BIWE projects.

Modern buildings are designed to enhance the match between environment, spaces and the people carrying out work, so that the well-being and the performance of the occupants are all in harmony. Building services are systems that facilitate a healthy working environment within which workers productivity can be optimised in the buildings. However, the maintenance of these services is fraught with problems that may contribute to up to 50% of the total life cycle cost of the building. Maintenance support is one area which is not usually designed into the system as this is not common practice in the services industry. The other areas of shortfall for future designs are; client requirements, commissioning, facilities management data and post occupancy evaluation feedback which needs to be adequately planned to capture and document this information for use in future designs. At the University of Reading an integrated approach has been developed to assemble the multitude of aspects inherent in this field. The means records required and measured achievements for the benefit of both building owners and practitioners. This integrated approach can be represented in a Through Life Business Model (TLBM) format using the concept of Integrated Logistic Support (ILS). The prototype TLBM developed utilises the tailored tools and techniques of ILS for building services. This TLBM approach will facilitate the successful development of a databank that would be invaluable in capturing essential data (e.g. reliability of components) for enhancing future building services designs, life cycle costing and decision making by practitioners, in particular facilities managers.

The cost of a road construction over its service life is a function of the design, quality of construction, maintenance strategies and maintenance operations. Unfortunately, designers often neglect a very important aspect which is the possibility to perform future maintenance activities. The focus is mainly on other aspects such as investment costs, traffic safety, aesthetic appearance, regional development and environmental effects. This licentiate thesis is a part of a Ph.D. project entitled “Road Design for lower maintenance costs” that aims to examine how the life-cycle costs can be optimized by selection of appropriate geometrical designs for the roads and their components. The result is expected to give a basis for a new method used in the road planning and design process using life-cycle cost analysis with particular emphasis on road maintenance. The project started with a review of literature with the intention to study conditions causing increased needs for road maintenance, the efforts made by the road authorities to satisfy those needs and the improvement potential by consideration of maintenance aspects during planning and design. An investigation was carried out to identify the problems which obstruct due consideration of maintenance aspects during the road planning and design process. This investigation focused mainly on the road planning and design process at the Swedish Road Administration. However, the road planning and design process in Denmark, Finland and Norway were also roughly evaluated to gain a broader knowledge about the research subject. The investigation was carried out in two phases: data collection and data analysis. Data was collected by semi-structured interviews with expert actors involved in planning, design and maintenance and by a review of design-related documents. Data analyses were carried out using a method called “Change Analysis”. This investigation revealed a complex combination of problems which result in inadequate consideration of maintenance aspects. Several urgent needs for changes to eliminate these problems were identified. Another study was carried out to develop a model for calculation of the repair costs for damages of different road barrier types and to analyse how factors such as road type, speed limits, barrier types, barrier placement, type of road section, alignment and seasonal effects affect the barrier damages and the associated repair costs. This study was carried out using a method called the “Case Study Research Method”. Data was collected from 1087 barrier repairs in two regional offices of the Swedish Road Administration, the Central Region and the Western Region. A table was established for both regions containing the repair cost per vehicle kilometre for different combinations of barrier types, road types and speed limits. This table can be used by the designers in the calculation of the life-cycle costs for different road barrier types.

Maintenance planning of road pavement requires reliable estimates of roads’ lifetimes. In determining the lifetime of a road, this study combines maintenance activities and road condition measurements. The scope of the paper is to estimate lifetimes of road pavements in Sweden with time to event analysis. The model used includes effects of pavement type, road type, bearing capacity, road width, speed limit, stone size and climate zone, where the model is stratified according to traffic load. Among the nine analyzed pavement types, stone mastic had the longest expected lifetime, 32 percent longer than asphalt concrete. Among road types, ordinary roads with cable barriers had 30 percent shorter lifetime than ordinary roads. Increased speed lowered the lifetime, while increased stone size (up to 20 mm) and increased road width lengthened the lifetime. The results are of importance for life cycle cost analysis and road management.
