ABSTRACT Acciona Energía has 150 MW of power capacity in Germany, all of them wind energy in a total of twelve installations, located in the south of the country. The main goal of the project is to compare the different ways to sell the energy which became from renewable source that German state offers for Acciona’s asset portfolio, finding the most advisable conclusion. To do so a study of standards and rules of Epex Spot electricity market and German law related to this topic has been made. In addition of an exhaustive monitoring of energy production and others wind farms variables has been analyzed. The reckoning and estimations saw the conclusion that the best option was the direct sell in Epex Spot market, in order to do that the first of all is to register as market agent. Despite this options assume bigger risks, it provide a substantial increase in income

Although others regulations regarding feed-in tariffs for photovoltaics (PV) existed in Spain previously, the one that meant a paradigm change was the introduction in 2007 of law R.D.661/2007 which established a feed-in tariff of 41,75 cents/kWh if the installed capacity was greater than 100KWp and 44,04 cents/kWh if it was smaller. The high level of the subsidies together with the lack of a limit for the total installed capacity originates the well-known Spanish photovoltaic boom. In September 2008 the installed PV capacity accounted for 3.2GWp (while the official objective stated in the national renewable roadmap was only 400MWp). To avoid this situation a new law, R.D. 1578/2008, was proclaimed which established a decreasing feed-in tariff of 32 cents/kWh (for ground installations) and 34 cents/kWh (for rooftops) and it limited the annual installed capacity to 500MWp. Although it was successful in limiting the PV subsidies total costs, the successive and sudden changes in regulations resulted very harmful to the local PV industry. In this article, the strong influence of feed-in tariff in the development of PV installed capacity and market evolution in Spain will be analyzed in detail. In addition, a comparison with other subsidized technologies which installed capacity has had a smoother evolution, as wind energy, will be presented.

In this work the concept of tracking integration in concentrating photovoltaics (CPV) is revisited and developed further. With respect to conventional CPV, tracking integration eliminates the clear separation between stationary units of optics and solar cells, and external solar trackers. This approach is capable of further increasing the concentration ratio and makes high concentrating photovoltaics (> 500x) available for single-axis tracker installations. The reduced external solar tracking effort enables possibly cheaper and more compact installations. Our proposed optical system uses two laterally moving plano-convex lenses to achieve high concentration over a wide angular range of ±24°. The lateral movement allows to combine both steering and concentration of the incident direct sun light. Given the specific symmetry conditions of the underlying optical design problem, rotational symmetric lenses are not ideal for this application. For this type of design problems, a new free-form optics design method presented in previous papers perfectly matches the symmetry. It is derived directly from Fermat's principle, leading to sets of functional differential equations allowing the successive calculation of the Taylor series coeficients of each implicit surface function up to very high orders. For optical systems designed for wide field of view and with clearly separated optical surfaces, this new analytic design method has potential application in both fields of nonimaging and imaging optics.

ABSTRACT In this project it is going to be studied the convenience of numerical simulation as to evaluate, design and improve the design of geothermal planar installations. With this purpose, the terrain and the geothermal system will be modeled by coupling a three-dimensional model (terrain) and a one-dimensional model formed by the geothermal piping network disposed in a plane with an orientation which will depend on the applications. For the numerical simulation commercial software of analyzing and resolving by finite elements will be used. Finally, geometric design parameters will be defined, and taking into account the thermal properties of each material, parametric studies will be performed to determine the influence of each group of parameters. This will require the completion of hundreds of numerical simulations which will enhance the performance of both horizontal (slabs) and vertical (diaphragm walls) geothermal systems.

Renewable energy sources are believed to reduce drastically greenhouse gas emissions that would otherwise be generated from fossil fuels used to generate electricity. This implies that a unit of renewable energy will replace a unit of fossil-fuel, with its CO2 emissions, on an equivalent basis (with no other effects on the grid). But, the fuel economy and emissions in the existing power systems are not proportional with the electricity production of intermittent sources due to cycling of the fossil fuel plants that make up the balance of the grid (i.e. changing the power output makes thermal units to operate less efficiently). This study focuses in the interactions between wind generation and thermal plants cycling, by establishing the levels of extra fuel use caused by decreased efficiencies of fossil back-up for wind electricity in Spain. We analyze the production of all thermal plants in 2011, studying different scenarios where wind penetration causes major deviations in programming, while we define a procedure for quantifying the carbon reductions by using emission factors and efficiency curves from the existing installations. The objectives are to discuss the real contributions of renewable energies to the environmental targets as well as suggest alternatives that would improve the reliability of future power systems.

This paper will present an open-source simulation tool, which is being developed in the frame of an European research project1. The tool, whose final version will be freely available through a website, allows the modelling and the design of different types of grid-connected PV systems, such as large grid-connected plants and building-integrated installations. The tool is based on previous software developed by the IES-UPM2, whose models and energy losses scenarios have been validated in the commissioning of PV projects3 carried out in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy, whose aggregated capacity is nearly 300MW. This link between design and commissioning is one of the key points of tool presented here, which is not usually addressed by present commercial software. The tool provides, among other simulation results, the energy yield, the analysis and breakdown of energy losses, and the estimations of financial returns adapted to the legal and financial frameworks of each European country. Besides, educational facilities will be developed and integrated in the tool, not only devoted to learn how to use this software, but also to train the users on the best design PV systems practices. The tool will also include the recommendation of several PV community experts, which have been invited to identify present necessities in the field of PV systems simulation. For example, the possibility of using meteorological forecasts as input data, or modelling the integration of large energy storage systems, such as vanadium redox or lithium-ion batteries. Finally, it is worth mentioning that during the verification and testing stages of this software development, it will be also open to the suggestions received from the different actors of the PV community, such as promoters, installers, consultants, etc.

In the framework of the OECD/NEA project on Benchmark for Uncertainty Analysis in Modeling (UAM) for Design, Operation, and Safety Analysis of LWRs, several approaches and codes are being used to deal with the exercises proposed in Phase I, “Specifications and Support Data for Neutronics Cases.” At UPM, our research group treats these exercises with sensitivity calculations and the “sandwich formula” to propagate cross-section uncertainties. Two different codes are employed to calculate the sensitivity coefficients of to cross sections in criticality calculations: MCNPX-2.7e and SCALE-6.1. The former uses the Differential Operator Technique and the latter uses the Adjoint-Weighted Technique. In this paper, the main results for exercise I-2 “Lattice Physics” are presented for the criticality calculations of PWR. These criticality calculations are done for a TMI fuel assembly at four different states: HZP-Unrodded, HZP-Rodded, HFP-Unrodded, and HFP-Rodded. The results of the two different codes above are presented and compared. The comparison proves a good agreement between SCALE-6.1 and MCNPX-2.7e in uncertainty that comes from the sensitivity coefficients calculated by both codes. Differences are found when the sensitivity profiles are analysed, but they do not lead to differences in the uncertainty.

Over the last few years, the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) under the sponsorship of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has prepared, organized, conducted, and summarized two international benchmarks based on the NUPEC data—the OECD/NRC Full-Size Fine-Mesh Bundle Test (BFBT) Benchmark and the OECD/NRC PWR Sub-Channel and Bundle Test (PSBT) Benchmark. The benchmarks’ activities have been conducted in cooperation with the Nuclear Energy Agency/Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (NEA/OECD) and the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety (JNES) Organization. This paper presents an application of the joint Penn State University/Technical University of Madrid (UPM) version of the well-known sub-channel code COBRA-TF (Coolant Boiling in Rod Array-Two Fluid), namely, CTF, to the steady state critical power and departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) exercises of the OECD/NRC BFBT and PSBT benchmarks. The goal is two-fold: firstly, to assess these models and to examine their strengths and weaknesses; and secondly, to identify the areas for improvement.

ABSTRACT Over the years the concrete structures have been increasing their market share, replacing the masonry structures of stone or brick and subtracting as well the participation of the metallic structures. One of the first problems encountered in the implementing of the reinforced concrete structures was connecting a phase structure of this type at a later stage or a subsequent amendment. Until the 80s and 90s the connections of one phase of a reinforced concrete structure with a subsequent first phase were done by leaving the steel plates embedded in the fresh concrete using hooks or bent bars coated with expanded polystyrene. Once the concrete had hardened new bars could be connected to the next stage by welding them to the surface plate or by straightening the bent bars to embed them in the fresh concrete of the next phase. These systems required a previous knowledge of the existence and scope of the subsequent phase before concreting the previous one. They also required a very precise and complex rethinking of the connecting elements. Another existing problem in the concrete structures was the adhesion of a fresh concrete to a previously hardened concrete, since the contact surface of both concretes leaded to a weak point with low adherence. Since the 80s, the chemicals construction industry experienced a breakthrough in the development of products that generate a good grip on the concrete. This technological advance had its application both in the grip on one hardened fresh concrete and in the adhesion of bar post-installed in holes of hardened concrete. This system was termed as adherent anchors of steel bars in hardened concrete. The generic way of executing this system is by firstly drilling a cylindrical hole in the concrete support using a specific tool such as a drill. Then, cleaning the bore and filling it with bonding material to lastly, introduce the steel bar. These adherent anchors are divided into cement and chemical anchors, the latter being the most common, reliable, durable and easy to run. The use of adhesive anchor of steel bars in hardened concrete has spread across the production spectrum turning itself into a very common solution in both construction of reinforced concrete civil engineering and construction, and industrial works, installations and fixing elements as well. The execution of an anchor of a steel bar in hardened concrete depends on numerous variables which together or as a single solution may significantly affect the strength of the anchor. We are referring to variables of anchors which are often not considered, such as the diameter difference between the rod and the bore, the drilling system, cleansing of the drill, type of anchor material, the moisture of the substrate, the direction of the drill, the drill’s height, etc. During recent years, the emergence of self-compacting concrete adds an additional variable which has hardly been studied so far. According to mentioned this thesis aims to study the main performance conditions in the resistance of conventional and self-compacting concrete anchors. This research is primarily focused on the evaluation of the influence of several variables on the strength of the anchoring, both in conventional concrete and self-compacting concrete. In order to complete this study it has been required the manufacture of two concrete supports on which to develop the tests. One of the blocks has been manufactured with conventional concrete and the other with self-compacting concrete. A total of 174 steel bar anchors have been made in each one of the concrete pieces varying the studied parameters in order to obtain results for all variables considered. The tests to be performed on both blocks are exactly the same in order to compare the difference between an anchor on a stand with vibrated concrete (HVC) and a self-compacting concrete (SCC). Each type of test required two repetitions in the same piece. The pulling test of the bars was made with a hollow jack and with an instrumentation system for reading and recording data in real time. The use of a powerful statistical tool in the analysis of the results allowed to numerically determine and evaluate the influence of the variables considered in the resistance of the anchors made. It has likewise enabled to differentiate the results obtained in the self-compacting and conventional concretes, from both the outlook of the mechanical strength and the deformations undergone by uprooting. The mechanical strength of an anchor is defined as the strength undergone in a direction of the bar to uproot it from the support. Likewise, the movement is defined as the separation between a fixed point of the bar and a fixed point from the support considering the direction of the bar. These points are only determined once the anchor is finished, with the bar, at the intersection in the flat surface of the support. The conclusions obtained have established which variables affect the execution of the anchors and in what quantity. They have also permitted to determine the difference between the anchors in vibrated concrete and selfcompacting concrete with very interesting results that also allow to assess the influence of these mentioned variables. Three groups are highlighted among the conclusions called high influence, low influence and no influence. In every case is necessary to perform the study in terms of loading and movement. In terms of loading, there are considered as high influence two variables: drilling machinery and anchorage material. In terms of movement, there are considered as high influence the drilling diameter and the cleaning and moisture of the support, besides the drilling machinery and the anchorage material. Variables such as type of concrete, drilling direction and cleaning and moisture of the support are considered of low influence in terms of load. In terms of movement, the type of concrete and the direction of the drilling are considered variables of low influence. Within the no influence section in terms of loading, there are included the diameter of the drilling and the height of the drill. In terms of loading, the height of the drill is considered as a no influence variable. We can affirm that the differences among the loading values increase significantly in terms of movement.

The PVCROPS project (PhotoVolta ic Cost r€duction, Reliability, Operational performance, Prediction and Simulation), cofinanced by European Commission in the frame of Seventh Framework Programme, has compiled in the “Good and bad practices: Manual to improve the quality and reduce the cost of PV systems” a collection of good and bad practices in actual PV plants . All the situations it collects represent the state-of-the-art of existing PV installations all around Europe. They show how the different parts of an installation can be implem ented properly or not. The aim of this manual is to represent a reference text which can help any PV actor (installers, electricians, maintenance operators, owners, etc.) not only to check and improve an already existing installation but will also, and mainly, avoid the previously known bad practices for the construction of a new PV installation. Thus, solving a priori the known errors, new PV installations will be more reliable, efficient and cost-effective and can recover the initial investment in a shorter time. The manual is going to be free available in the PVCROPS website in several languages.

The definition of technical specifications and the corresponding laboratory procedures are necessary steps in order to assure the quality of the devices prior to be installed in Solar Home Systems (SHS). To clarify and unify criteria a European project supported the development of the Universal Technical Standard for Solar Home Systems (UTSfSHS). Its principles were to generate simple and affordable technical requirements to be optimized in order to facilitate the implementation of tests with basic and simple laboratory tools even on the same SHS electrification program countries. These requirements cover the main aspects of this type of installations and its lighting chapter was developed based on the most used technology at that time: fluorescent tubes and CFLs. However, with the consolidation of the new LED solid state lighting devices, particular attention is being given to this matter and new procedures are required. In this work we develop a complete set of technical specifications and test procedures that have been designed within the frame of the UTSfSHS, based on an intense review of the scientific and technical publications related to LED lighting and their practical application. They apply to lamp reliability, performance and safety under normal, extreme and abnormal operating conditions as a simple but complete quality meter tool for any LED bulb.

Between 2003 and 2007 an urban network or road tunnels with a total constructed tubes length of 45 km was built in the city of Madrid. This amazing engineering work, known as "Calle 30 Project" counted with different kinds of tunnel typologies and ventilation systems. Due to the length of the tunnels and the impact of the work itself, the tunnels were endowed with a great variety of installations to provide the maximum levels of safety both for users and the infrastructure includieng, in some parts of the tunnel, fixed fire fighting system based on water mist. Whithin this framework a large-scale programme of fire tests was planned to study different aspects related to fire safety in the tunnels including the phenomena of the interaction between ventilation and extinguishing system. In addition, these large scale fire tests allowed fire brigades of the city of Madrid an opportunity to define operational procedures for specific fire fighting in tunnels and evaluate the possibilities of fixed fire fighting systems. The tests were carried out in the Center of Experimentation "San pedro of Anes" which includes a 600 m tunnel with a removable false ceiling for reproducing different ceiling heights and ventilation conditions (transverse and longitudinal ones). Interesting conclusions on the interaction of ventilation and water mist systems were obtained but also on other aspects including performance of water mist system in terms of reduction of gas temperatures or visibility conditions. This paper presents a description of the test's programme carried out and some previous results obtained.
