This paper presents the results of the investigations that were done to identify and to quantify the power quality problems resultant from the actions done to improve the efficiency on electric energy consumption. The efficiencies of several electric devices were evaluated, among them: fluorescent bulb, electronic ballast, soft-starter, temperature controller for showers, dimmer and others. This evaluation allowed to establish a cause/effect analysis of the power quality.

This paper shows the results of experimental investigations of three-phase banks composed of single-phase transformers and three-phase three-limb core transformers under simultaneous alternating and direct current excitations, for several winding connections. Harmonic analysis of excitation currents for different de saturation levels is performed.

This work proposes a methodology to generalize the Y-connections for 12- and 18-pulse autotransformers. A single mathematical expression, obtained through simple trigonometric operations, represents all the connections. The proposed methodology allows choosing any ratio between the input and the output voltages. The converters can operate either as step-up or as step-down voltage. To simplify the design of the windings, graphics are generated to calculate the turn-ratio and the polarity of each secondary winding, with respect to the primary winding. A design example, followed by digital simulations, illustrates the presented steps. Experimental results of two prototypes (12 and 18 pulses) are presented. The results also show that high power factor is an inherent characteristic of multi-pulse converters, without any active or passive power factor pre-regulators needs. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. This paper investigates the feasibility of using an energy harvesting device tuned such that its natural frequency coincides with higher harmonics of the input to capture energy from walking or running human motion more efficiently. The paper starts by reviewing the concept of a linear resonant generator for a tonal frequency input and then derives an expression for the power harvested for an input with several harmonics. The amount of power harvested is estimated numerically using measured data from human subjects. Assuming that the input is periodic, the signal is reconstructed using a Fourier series before being used in the simulation. It is found that although the power output depends on the input frequency, the choice of tuning the natural frequency of the device to coincide with a particular higher harmonic is restricted by the amount of damping that is needed to maximize the amount of power harvested, as well as to comply with the size limit of the device. It is also found that it is not feasible to tune the device to match the first few harmonics when the size of the device is small, because a large amount of damping is required to limit the motion of the mass.

In this work the problem of a spacecraft bi-impulsive transfer between two given non coplanar elliptical orbits, with minimum fuel consumption, is solved considering a non-Keplerian force field (the perturbing forces include Earth gravity harmonics and atmospheric drag). The problem is transformed in the Two Point Boundary Value Problem. It is developed and implemented a new algorithm, that uses the analytical expressions developed here. A dynamics that considered a Keplerian force field was used to produce an initial guess to solve the Two Point Boundary Value Problem. Several simulations were performed to observe the spacecraft orbital behaviour by different kind of perturbations and constraints, on a fuel consumption optimization point of view. (C) 2002 COSPAR. The superposition of optical interference patterns in a photoresist film can produce a rich variety of diffractive structures. In particular, a periodic non-sinusoidal surface relief profile can be synthesized by adding the Fourier components (sinusoidal gratings) of the desired profile. In order to control the shape of the grooves it is very important an accurate adjustment of the relative spatial shift between the recorded sinusoidal components. We describe the implementation of an opto-electronic feedback loop to select and lock such spatial shift at any desired position, thus allowing the synthesis of structures varying from symmetrical to asymmetrical relief profiles in a continuous range. To demonstrate the feasibility of the technique, the Fourier synthesis of two spatial harmonics is accomplished. The superposed sinusoidal gratings were recorded in positive photoresist films using a holographic setup operating at the line lambda = 457.9 run of an argon-ion laser. A detailed description of the procedure as well as the resulting profiles recorded in the photoresist is presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A new approach for studying photorefractive gratings in two-wave mixing experiments by a phase modulation technique is presented. The introduction of a large-amplitude, high-frequency sinusoidal phase modulation in one of the input beams blurs the interference pattern and provides powerful harmonic signals for accurate measurements of the grating diffraction efficiency eta and the output phase shift rho between the transmitted and diffracted waves. The blurring of the light fringes can be used to suppress the higher spatial harmonics of the grating, allowing a space-charge field with sinusoidal profile to be recorded. Although the presence of such a strong phase modulation affects the beam coupling in a rather complicated way, it is shown that for the special case of equal intensity input beams, the effect of the phase modulation on eta and rho is reduced to a weakening of the coupling strength. The potentialities of the technique are illustrated in a study of refractive-index waves excited by running interference patterns in a Bi12TiO20 crystal. Expressions for the diffraction efficiency and the output phase shift are derived and used to match numerically calculated curves to the experimental data. The theoretical model is supported by the very good data fitting and allows the computation of important material parameters.

This work describes a methodology for power factor control and correction of the unbalanced currents in four-wire electric circuits. The methodology is based on the insertion of two compensation networks, one wye-grounded neutral and other in delta, in parallel to the load. The mathematical development has been proposed in previous work [3]. In this paper, however, the determination of the compensation susceptances is based on the instantaneous values of load currents. The results are obtained using the MatLab-Simulink enviroment

A robust 12 kW rectifier with low THD in the line currents, based on an 18-pulse transformer arrangement with reduced kVA capacities followed by a high-frequency isolation stage is presented in this work. Three full-bridge (buck-based) converters are used to allow galvanic isolation and to balance the dc-link currents, without current sensing or current controller. The topology provides a regulated dc output with a very simple and well-known control strategy and natural three-phase power factor correction. The phase-shift PWM technique, with zero-voltage switching is used for the high-frequency dc-dc stage. Analytical results from Fourier analysis of winding currents and the vector diagram of winding voltages are presented. Experimental results from a 12 kW prototype are shown in the paper to verify the efficiency, robustness and simplicity of the command circuitry to the proposed concept.

This paper explains the conceptual design of instrumentation that measures electric quantities defined in the Std. 1459-2000. It is shown how the instantaneous-space-phasor approach, based on alpha, beta, 0 components, can be used to monitor electric energy flow, evaluate the utilization of transmission line, and quantify the level of harmonic pollution injected by nonlinear loads.
