In this paper we propose the use of the least-squares based methods for obtaining digital rational approximations (IIR filters) to fractional-order integrators and differentiators of type sα, α∈R. Adoption of the Padé, Prony and Shanks techniques is suggested. These techniques are usually applied in the signal modeling of deterministic signals. These methods yield suboptimal solutions to the problem which only requires finding the solution of a set of linear equations. The results reveal that the least-squares approach gives similar or superior approximations in comparison with other widely used methods. Their effectiveness is illustrated, both in the time and frequency domains, as well in the fractional differintegration of some standard time domain functions.

Many recent inverse scattering techniques have been designed for single frequency scattered fields in the frequency domain. In practice, however, the data is collected in the time domain. Frequency domain inverse scattering algorithms obviously apply to time-harmonic scattering, or nearly time-harmonic scattering, through application of the Fourier transform. Fourier transform techniques can also be applied to non-time-harmonic scattering from pulses. Our goal here is twofold: first, to establish conditions on the time-dependent waves that provide a correspondence between time domain and frequency domain inverse scattering via Fourier transforms without recourse to the conventional limiting amplitude principle; secondly, we apply the analysis in the first part of this work toward the extension of a particular scattering technique, namely the point source method, to scattering from the requisite pulses. Numerical examples illustrate the method and suggest that reconstructions from admissible pulses deliver superior reconstructions compared to straight averaging of multi-frequency data. It is demonstrated that distortion of the terahertz beam profile and generation of a cross-polarised component occur when the beam in terahertz time domain spectroscopy and imaging systems interacts with the sample under test. These distortions modify the detected signal, leading to spectral and image artefacts. The degree of distortion depends on the optical design of the system as well as the properties of the sample.
A dual QPSK soft-demapper for ECMA-368 exploiting time-domain spreading and guard interval diversity

When considering the relative fast processing speed and low power requirements for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) and Wireless Universal Serial Bus (USB) consumer based products, then the efficiency and cost effectiveness of these products become paramount. This paper presents an improved soft-output QPSK demapper suitable for the products above that not only exploits time diversity and guard carrier diversity, but also merges the demapping and symbol combining functions together to minimize CPU cycles, or memory access dependant upon the chosen implementation architecture. The proposed demapper is presented in the context of Multiband OFDM version of UWB (ECMA-368) as the chosen physical implementation for high-rate Wireless USB.

An efficient finite difference scheme is presented for the inviscid terms of the three-dimensional, compressible flow equations for chemical non-equilibrium gases. This scheme represents an extension and an improvement of one proposed by the author, and includes operator splitting.

We present a finite difference scheme, with the TVD (total variation diminishing) property, for scalar conservation laws. The scheme applies to non-uniform meshes, allowing for variable mesh spacing, and is without upstream weighting. When applied to systems of conservation laws, no scalar decomposition is required, nor are any artificial tuning parameters, and this leads to an efficient, robust algorithm.

A finite difference scheme is presented for the solution of the two-dimensional equations of steady, supersonic, compressible flow of real gases. The scheme incorparates numerical characteristic decomposition, is shock-capturing by design and incorporates space-marching as a result of the assumption that the flow is wholly supersonic in at least one space dimension. Results are shown for problems involving oblique hydraulic jumps and reflection from a wall.

In this paper, the Prony's method is applied to the time-domain waveform data modelling in the presence of noise. The following three problems encountered in this work are studied:(1)determination of the order of waveform;(2)de-termination of numbers of multiple roots;(3)determination of the residues. The methods of solving these problems are given and simulated on the computer. Finally,an output pulse of model PG-10N signal generator and the distorted waveform obtained by transmitting the pulse above mentioned through a piece of coaxial cable are modelled, and satisfactory results are obtained. So the effectiveness of Prony's method in waveform data modelling in the presence of noise is confirmed.

We describe a fluid cell for the measurement of aqueous solutions of biomolecules adapted particularly for the requirements of THz time-domain spectroscopy. The design is simple, requires small-volume samples, avoids cross-contamination and is inexpensive.
