Computer-Based Design Synthesis Research: An Overview

One of the hallmarks of engineering design is the design synthesis phase where the creativity of the designer most prominently comes into play as solutions are generated to meet underlying needs. Over the past decades, methodologies for generating concepts and design solutions have matured to the point that computation-based synthesis provides a means to explore a wider variety of solutions and take over more tedious design tasks. This paper reviews advances in function-based, grammar-based, and analogy-based synthesis approaches and their contributions to computational design synthesis research in the last decade. Aboriginal peoples in Canada have been mapping aspects of their cultures for more than a generation. Indians, Inuit, Métis, non-status Indians and others have called their maps by different names at various times and places: land use and occupancy; land occupancy and use; traditional use; traditional land use and occupancy; current use; cultural sensitive areas; and so on. I use “land use and occupancy mapping” in a generic sense to include all the above. The term refers to the collection of interview data about traditional use of resources and occupancy of lands by First Nation persons, and the presentation of those data in map form. Think of it as the geography of oral tradition, or as the mapping of cultural and resource geography. (PDF contains 81 pages.)

The design of multimesh, multidepth gillnet fleets for use in the Lake Victoria Fisheries Research Project

Multimesh, multidepth gillnet fleets are useful in assessing fish stock abundance, size distribution and depth distribution. Using data collected on net mesh selectivity for Nile perch, Lates niloticus (L.), in the Kenyan waters of Lake Victoria, suitable mesh sizes for gillnet fleets for use in the Lake Victoria Fisheries Research Project were determined. The modal selection length for Nile perch in the mesh sized used in the earlier experiment were determined, as was the size range vulnerable to capture. Initial trials suggest 60% of the Nile perch swim within 5 m of the bottom. Setting and hauling of the nets is simple and quick, allowing the nets to be used at the same time as other sampling programmes.
