Blocking Top-down awareness of Kanizsa Figures: An ERP Investigation into Bottom-up Processing of Illusory Contours

Neural models of the processing of illusory contour (ICs) diverge from one another in terms of their emphasis on bottom-up versus top-down constituents. The current study uses a dichoptic fusion paradigm to block top-down awareness of ICs in order to examine possible bottom-up effects. Group results indicate that the N170 ERP component is particularly sensitive to ICs at central occipital sites when top-down awareness of the stimulus is permitted. Furthermore, single-subject statistics reveal that the IC N170 ERP effect is highly variable across individuals in terms of timing and topographical spread. The results suggest that the ubiquitous N170 effect to ICs found in the literature depends, at least in part, on participants’ awareness of the stimulus. Therefore a strong bottom-up model of IC processing at the time of the N170 is unlikely.

The Backing of Government Debt and the Price Level

This paper studies the interdependence between fiscal and monetary policies, and their joint role in the determination of the price level. The government is characterized by a long-run fiscal policy rule whereby a given fraction of the outstanding debt, say d, is backed by the present discounted value of current and future primary surpluses. The remaining debt is backed by seigniorage revenue. The parameter d characterizes the interdependence between fiscal and monetary authorities. It is shown that in a standard monetary economy, this policy rule implies that the price level depends not only on the money stock, but also on the proportion of debt that is backed with money. Empirical estimates of d are obtained for OECD countries using data on nominal consumption, monetary base, and debt. Results indicate that debt plays only a minor role in the determination of the price level in these economies. Estimates of d correlate well with institutional measures of central bank independence.

Les figures de la lecture dans La possibilité d'une île de Michel Houellebecq

Dans ce mémoire, je compte étudier la lecture représentée dans l’œuvre de Michel Houellebecq. Mon travail sera divisé en deux parties. D’abord, je m’attacherai aux figures de lecteurs dans La possibilité d’une île et dans les autres romans de Houellebecq. Je verrai alors comment la lecture est incarnée dans les romans et quelles sont les fonctions des personnages-lecteurs. Par exemple, j’examinerai comment les personnages s’expriment sur la littérature dans La possibilité d’une île. Je compte pour ce faire utiliser les concepts de « liseur », de « lu » et de « lectant » proposés par Michel Picard dans La lecture comme jeu, mais dans le sens que leur donne Marcel Goulet dans ses travaux. La deuxième partie se centrera sur un « lecteur » particulièrement important : Houellebecq lui-même. Adoptant la définition de l’intertextualité donnée par Gérard Genette dans Palimpsestes, je me concentrerai uniquement sur les traces explicites d’autres textes dans La possibilité d’une île. Je me concentrerai d’abord sur les auteurs fréquemment cités, ceux dont Houellebecq se réclame ou dont il s’écarte. Je me questionnerai ensuite sur le rapport souvent négatif de Houellebecq avec la littérature du passé, pour essayer d’y voir une représentation de cette lecture critique à laquelle l’auteur tente de nous initier. Le travail sur l’intertextualité servira à identifier ce que Pierre Bayard nomme la « bibliothèque intérieure » de l’auteur et à questionner son rapport à celle-ci.
