The molecular ordering of coronene (C24H12) obtained by vacuum-deposition onto predominantly Ag(111) on mica has been investigated using the scanning tunnelling microscope. Real-space topographic images reveal that in certain regions we obtain layer-by-layer ordered growth of the molecules on this substrate which agrees with previous indirect measurements (the growth did not display this ordering in other regions). In our experiments on the ordered regions, we observe the best imaging contrast at a voltage bias of -0.28 V which may correspond to a resonant tunnelling process through the molecules. 1995.

Under the environment of seawater, durability of concrete materials is one of the chief factors considered in the design of structures. The decrease of durability of structures is induced by the evolution of micro-damage due to the erosion of chlorine and sulfate ions, which is characterized by the reduction of modulus, strength, and toughness of the material. In this paper, the variation of the flexural strength of cement mortar under sulfate erosion is investigated. The results obtained in present work indicate that the erosion time, concentration of sulfate solution, and water-to-cement ratio will significantly affect the flexural strength. The energy, velocity, angle distribution of ions in magnetoactive electron cyclotron resonance plasma have been studied with a two-dimension hybrid mode. The dependence of these distribution functions versus position and pressure are discussed. Our simulation results are in good agreement with many experimental measurements. The ablation rate of a hydrogen isotopic spherical pellet G(is) due to the impact of energetic ions of the respective isotopes and its scaling law are obtained using the transsonic neutral-shielding model, where subscript s might refer to either hydrogen or deuterium. Numerical results show that if E0s/E0e2 greater-than-or-equal-to 1.5, G(is)/G(es) greater-than-or-equal-to 20%, where E0s and E0e are the energy of undisturbed ion and electron, respectively, and G(es) is the ablation rate of a pellet due to the impact of electrons. Hence, under the NBI heating, the effect of the impact of energetic ions on the pellet ablation should be taken into consideration. This result also gives an explanation of the observed enhancement of pellet ablation during NBIH.

[EN]Rumenic acid (cis9,trans11-18:2) is the main natural isomer of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Rumenic acid has many purported health benefits, but effects of most other CLA isomers are unknown. Typically trans7,cis9-18:2 is the second most abundant CLA isomer, but it co-elutes with rumenic acid on conventional polar gas chromatography (GC) columns, requiring complimentary analysis with silver-ion high performance liquid chromatography (Ag(+)-HPLC). Herein we report a rapid method for analyzing rumenic acid and trans7,cis9-18:2 using a 30 m ionic-liquid GC column. Optimal resolution of the two CLA isomers was at 145 degrees C and analysis of backfat from barley-fed cattle compared well with GC/Ag(+)-HPLC (y =0.978x - 0.031, r =0.985, P <0.001).

We propose a universal quantum computation scheme for trapped ions in thermal motion via the technique of adiabatic passage, which incorporates the advantages of both the adiabatic passage and the model of trapped ions in thermal motion. Our scheme is immune from the decoherence due to spontaneous emission from excited states as the system in our scheme evolves along a dark state. In our scheme the vibrational degrees of freedom are not required to be cooled to their ground states because they are only virtually excited. It is shown that the fidelity of the resultant gate operation is still high even when the magnitude of the effective Rabi frequency moderately deviates from the desired value.

Using conventional methods, a laser pulse can be focused down to around 6-8 mu m, but further reduction of the spot size has proven to be difficult. Here it is shown by particle-in-cell simulation that with a hollow cone an intense laser pulse can be reduced to a tiny, highly localized, spot of around 1 mu m radius, accompanied by much enhanced light intensity. The pulse shaping and focusing effect is due to a nonlinear laser-plasma interaction on the inner surface of the cone. When a thin foil is attached to the tip of the cone, the cone-focused light pulse compresses and accelerates the ions in its path and can punch through the thin target, creating highly localized energetic ion bunches of high density.

<p>Collector-type experiments have been conducted to investigate two different aspects of sputtering induced by keV ions. The first study looked for possible ejection mechanisms related to the primary charge state of the projectile. Targets of CsI and LiNbO_3 were bombarded with 48 keV Ar^(q+), and a Au target was bombarded with 60 keV Ar^(q+), for q = 4, 8, and 11. The collectors were analyzed using heavy-ion Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy to determine the differential angular sputtering yields; these and the corresponding total yields were examined for variations as a function of projectile charge state. For the Au target, no significant changes were seen, but for the insulating targets slight (~10%) enhancements were observed in the total yields as the projectile charge state was increased from 4+ to 11+.</p> <p>In the second investigation, artificial ^(92)Mo/^(100)Mo targets were bombarded with 5 and 10 keV beams of Ar^+ and Xe^+ to study the isotopic fractionation of sputtered neutrals as a function of emission angle and projectile fluence. Using secondary ion mass spectroscopy to measure the isotope ratio on the collectors, material ejected into normal directions at low bombarding fluences (~ 10^(15) ions cm^(-2)) was found to be enriched in the light isotope by as much as ~70 compared to steady state. Similar results were found for secondary Mo ions sputtered by 14.5 keV O^-. For low-fluence 5 keV Xe^+ bombardment, the light-isotope enrichment at oblique angles was ~20 less than the corresponding enrichment in the normal direction. No angular dependence could be resolved for 5 keV Ar^+ projectiles at the lowest fluence. The above fractionation decreased to steady-state values after bombarding fluences of a few times 10^(16) ions cm^(-2) , with the angular dependence becoming more pronounced. The fractionation and total sputtering yield were found to be strongly correlated, indicating that the above effects may have been related to the presence of a modified target surface layer. The observed effects are consistent with other secondary ion measurements and multiple-interaction computer simulations, and are considerably larger than predicted by existing analytic theory.</p>

We investigated the effect of cerium oxide on the precipitation of Ag nanoparticles in silicate glass via a femtosecond laser irradiation and successive annealing. Absorption spectra show that Ce3+ ions may absorb part of the laser energy via multiphoton absorption and release free electrons, resulting in an increase of the concentration of Ag atoms and a decrease of the concentration of hole-trapped color centers, which influence precipitation of the Ag nanoparticles. In addition, we found that the formed Ag-0 may reduce Ce4+ ions to Ce3+ ions during the annealing process, which inhibits the growth of the Ag nanoparticles.

A multiple-staged ion acceleration mechanism in the interaction of a circularly polarized laser pulse with a solid target is studied by one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The ions are accelerated from rest to several MeV monoenergetically at the front surface of the target. After all the plasma ions are accelerated, the acceleration process is repeated on the resulting monoenergetic ions. Under suitable conditions multiple repetitions can be realized and a high-energy quasi-monoenergetic ion beam can be obtained.

We report a method for the selective introduction of fluorescent Ag nanoclusters in glass. Extinction and photoluminescence spectra show that a fraction of the Ag atoms are generated through femtosecond laser induced multiphoton reduction and then aggregate to form Ag nanoclusters after heat treatment. Red luminescence from the irradiated region is observed under blue or green laser excitation. The fluorescence can be attributed to interband transitions within Ag nanoclusters. This method provides a novel route to fabricate fluorescent nanomaterials in 3D transparent materials. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
