Benthic foraminifers from Site 652, Site 653 (Hole 653A), and Site 654 of Leg 107 (Tyrrhenian Sea, Western Mediterranean), which penetrated with more or less good recovery the Plio-Pleistocene stratigraphic interval, were studied in a total of 699 close-spaced samples. A total number of 269 species have been classified and their quantitative distribution in each sample is reported. The benthic foraminifers assemblage is more diversified in Site 654, less diversified in Site 652. Less than a half of the benthic foraminifers species listed from Plio-Pleistocene Italian land sections are present in the coeval deep-sea Tyrrhenian record, in which shallow water species are missing and Nodosarids are poorly represented. A very few species have comparable stratigraphic distribution in the three deep-sea sequences and in Italian land sections when compared against calcareous plankton biostratigraphy. In the same three sites, the first appearance levels of several species are younger and younger, and last appearance levels are earlier and earlier from Site 654 to Site 653 and Site 652. Five biostratigraphic events, biochronologically evaluated and occurring at the same level in the deepsea Tyrrhenian record and in several land sections, have been selected as zonal boundaries of the proposed benthic foraminifers biostratigraphic scheme. The Plio-Pleistocene interval has been subdivided into four biozones and one subzone, recognizable both in the deep-sea and land-based sequences. The Cibicidoides (?) italicus assemblage zone stretches from the base of the Pliocene to the extinction level of the zonal marker, biochronologically evaluated at 2.9 Ma. The Cibicidoides robertsonianus interval zone stretches from the Cibicidoides (?) italicus extinction level to the Pliocene Mediterranean FO of Gyroidinoides altiformis, evaluated at 2.4 Ma. The Gyroidinoides altiformis interval zone stretches from the Mediterranean Pliocene FO of the zonal marker to the appearance level of Articulina tubulosa, evaluated at 1.62 Ma. The Articulina tubulosa assemblage zone stretches from the appearance level of the zonal marker to the Recent. In the Articulina tubulosa biozone, the Hyalinea baltica subzone is proposed. The appearance level of Hyalinea baltica is evaluated at 1.35 Ma, well above the Plio-Pleistocene boundary as defined in the Vrica stratotype section.

This study involves samples of Santonian to Eocene age (Cores 516F-125 to 516F-38) taken from the Rio Grande Rise in the South Atlantic Ocean. These samples are from DSDP Site 516 occupied during Leg 72 of the Glomar Challenger (details given in site chapter, Site 516, this volume). Only Santonian to Paleocene cores have been well sampled, and analyses of the Eocene samples are preliminary results. Results of the trace element analyses (Mg, Sr, Mn, Ni, Fe, Na, K) of the carbonate fraction and CaCO3 percentage for each sample can be found in Renard and others (1983). Whole geochemical data are treated by the statistical method of correspondence analysis. Oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios measured on samples close to the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary are not used in this study.

Two sites were drilled in the Celebes Sea as part of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 124; Site 767 and Site 770. Radiolarians are preserved in Paleogene pelagic claystones with minor occurrences in certain Neogene successions. The brown clays that immediately overlie basalt at both sites contain radiolarians of the late middle Eocene Podocyrtis chalara Zone. Late Eocene radiolarians are not found, due to dissolution and probable hiatus. The Oligocene is represented by the Theocyrtis tuberosa and Dorcadospyris ateuchus Zones. Oligocene sediments are strongly dominated by abundant and diverse radiolarians of the TristylospyrislDorcadospyris lineage. Preservation of Paleogene radiolarian assemblages ranges from good to very poor. Late Miocene radiolarians of the Didymocyrtis antepenultima Zone are found only in Site 770. Other Neogene sediments are barren of radiolarian remains, with the exception of latest Pleistocene and Holocene sediments.

This paper assesses rural vernacular heritage established in a warm temperate climate, with dry, hot summer, in São Vicente e Ventosa (SVV), Alentejo, Portugal, and takes part in a larger investigation intending to create rehabilitation guidelines, with sustainable criteria and integration of recent technologies, to improving indoor comfort, and revert the state of deterioration. To further reach this aim, this paper proposes a four phases methodology: data collection, evaluation, simulation and development; a first survey data analysis, including climate data and the adapted comfort climograph and isopleth diagram, allows an understanding of thermal comfort and main constraints in site, as well as suitable bioclimatic strategies for SVV: high thermal inertia for tempering extreme summer conditions and the considerable temperature amplitudes throughout the year, complementarily night ventilation for passive cooling, small-sized window openings and movable shading systems for solar radiation protection. An efficient behaviour in stabilizing indoor temperature swings is revealed.

ABSTRACT. In the following thesis, an acoustic study of the church San Sebastian in Alcorisa (Teruel) has been made. The aim is to find how the reformation in 2001 affected or changed the acoustic characteristics of the concert and conference hall area. Moreover, suggestion for improvements will also be presented later in the work. To start the study, the restoration project of the church, which was signed by the company mmt, SL in January 2001 is used. Based on the maps found in this project, two and three dimensions models of the room have been built before and after the restoration, to use them in the acoustic simulation. The simulation of the area studied has been adjusted according to the measurement in site, which will help giving the most realistic result possible. In addition to the architectural acoustic solutions, a sound system is collocated so that the hall can be used for concerts and conferences.

In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Sic1, an inhibitor of Clb-Cdc28 kinases, must be phosphorylated and degraded in G1 for cells to initiate DNA replication, and Cln-Cdc28 kinase appears to be primarily responsible for phosphorylation of Sic1. The Pho85 kinase is a yeast cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk), which is not essential for cell growth unless both CLN1 and CLN2 are absent. We demonstrate that Pho85, when complexed with Pcl1, a G1 cyclin homologue, can phosphorylate Sic1 in vitro, and that Sic1 appears to be more stable in pho85Δ cells. Three consensus Cdk phosphorylation sites present in Sic1 are phosphorylated in vivo, and two of them are required for prompt degradation of the inhibitor. Pho85 and other G1 Cdks appear to phosphorylate Sic1 at different sites in vivo. Thus at least two distinct Cdks can participate in phosphorylation of Sic1 and may therefore regulate progression through G1.

Opening and closing of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) Cl− channel is regulated by the interaction of ATP with its two cytoplasmic nucleotide-binding domains (NBD). Although ATP hydrolysis by the NBDs is required for normal gating, the influence of ATP binding versus hydrolysis on specific steps in the gating cycle remains uncertain. Earlier work showed that the absence of Mg2+ prevents hydrolysis. We found that even in the absence of Mg2+, ATP could support channel activity, albeit at a reduced level compared with the presence of Mg2+. Application of ATP with a divalent cation, including the poorly hydrolyzed CaATP complex, increased the rate of opening. Moreover, in CFTR variants with mutations that disrupt hydrolysis, ATP alone opened the channel and Mg2+ further enhanced ATP-dependent opening. These data suggest that ATP alone can open the channel and that divalent cations increase ATP binding. Consistent with this conclusion, when we mutated an aspartate thought to bind Mg2+, divalent cations failed to increase activity compared with ATP alone. Two observations suggested that divalent cations also stabilize the open state. In wild-type CFTR, CaATP generated a long duration open state, whereas ATP alone did not. With a CFTR variant in which hydrolysis was disrupted, MgATP, but not ATP alone, produced long openings. These results suggest a gating cycle for CFTR in which ATP binding opens the channel and either hydrolysis or dissociation leads to channel closure. In addition, the data suggest that ATP binding and hydrolysis by either NBD can gate the channel.

Pre-mRNA splicing requires the bridging of the 5′ and 3′ ends of the intron. In yeast, this bridging involves interactions between the WW domains in the splicing factor PRP40 and a proline-rich domain in the branchpoint binding protein, BBP. Using a proline-rich domain derived from formin (a product of the murine limb deformity locus), we have identified a family of murine formin binding proteins (FBP’s), each of which contains one or more of a special class of tyrosine-rich WW domains. Two of these WW domains, in the proteins FBP11 and FBP21, are strikingly similar to those found in the yeast splicing factor PRP40. We show that FBP21 is present in highly purified spliceosomal complex A, is associated with U2 snRNPs, and colocalizes with splicing factors in nuclear speckle domains. Moreover, FBP21 interacts directly with the U1 snRNP protein U1C, the core snRNP proteins SmB and SmB′, and the branchpoint binding protein SF1/mBBP. Thus, FBP21 may play a role in cross-intron bridging of U1 and U2 snRNPs in the mammalian A complex.
