Crystal growth, electrical and magnetic properties are reported for mixed valence manganite Pr1-xPbxMnO3 (x = 0.2, 0.23, and 0.3). The crystals with x = 0.2 and 0.23 are ferromagnetic and insulating, whereas that with x = 0.3 is ferromagnetic below 200 K and shows an insulator-metal transition at 235 K. This composition shows a magnetoresistance of 90% in a field of 5 T. In the paramagnetic region, the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility of the crystals follows a Curie-Weiss behavior. The thermal evolution of magnetization in the ferromagnetic phase varies as T-3/2, in accordance with Bloch's law. The spin-stiffness constant D obtained from the Bloch constant is found to increase linearly with x. The magnetization does not reach complete saturation upto a field of 5 T. A possible contribution of the Pr spins to the total magnetic moment is discussed.

The binding of a 14 kDa beta-galactoside animal lectin to splenocytes has been studied in detail. The binding data show that there are two classes of binding sites on the cells for the lectin: a high-affinity site with a K-a ranging from 1.1 x 10(6) to 5.1 x 10(5) M-1 and a low affinity binding site with a K-a ranging from 7.7 x 10(4) to 3.4 x 10(4) M-1 The number of receptors per cell for the high- and low-affinity sites is 9 +/- 3 x 10(6) and 2.5 +/- 0.5 x 10(6) respectively. The temperature dependence of the K value yielded the thermodynamic parameters. The energetics of this interaction shows that, although this interaction is essentially enthalpically driven (Delta H - 21 kJ lambda mol(-1)) for the high-affinity sites, there is a very favorable entropy contribution to the free energy of this interaction (-T Delta S - 17.5 Jmol(-1)), suggesting that hydrophobic interaction may also be playing a role in this interaction. Lactose brought about a 20% inhibition of this interaction, whereas the glycoprotein asialofetuin brought about a 75 % inhibition, suggesting that complex carbohydrate structures are involved in the binding of galectin-1 to splenocytes, Galectin-1 also mediated the binding and adhesion of splenocytes to the extracellular matrix glycoprotein laminin, suggesting a role for it in cell-matrix interactions. We demonstrate a top-gated field effect transistor made of a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) monolayer (graphene) by dielectrophoresis. The Raman spectrum of RGO flakes of typical size of 5 mu m x 5 mu m shows a single 2D band at 2687 cm(-1), characteristic of single-layer graphene. The two-probe current-voltage measurements of RGO flakes, deposited in between the patterned electrodes with a gap of 2.5 mu m using ac dielectrophoresis, show ohmic behavior with a resistance of similar to 37 k Omega. The temperature dependence of the resistance (R) of RGO measured between 305 K and 393 K yields a temperature coefficient of resistance [dR/dT]/R similar to -9.5 x 10(-4)/K, the same as that of mechanically exfoliated single-layer graphene. The field-effect transistor action was obtained by electrochemical top-gating using a solid polymer electrolyte (PEO + LiClO4) and Pt wire. The ambipolar nature of graphene flakes is observed up to a doping level of similar to 6 x 10(12)/cm(2) and carrier mobility of similar to 50 cm(2)/V s. The source-drain current characteristics show a tendency of current saturation at high source-drain voltage which is analyzed quantitatively by a diffusive transport model. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. We report the results of our non-resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) studies on single crystals of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl 2212) which reflect the occurrence of intrinsic Josephson coupling in these crystals. We have studied the magnetic field induced microwave absorption at various temperatures from 4.2K to T-c (similar to 104K) using a standard CW EPR spectrometer (H-dc parallel to c). We observe the appearance of a characteristic feature in the NRMA signals similar to the ones observed earlier by us in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi 2212) starting a few degrees below T-c, which on cooling passes through a maximum in intensity before disappearing at a further low temperature. This behaviour is attributed to the appearance, strengthening and disappearance of Josephson response consequent to the temperature dependence of the viscosity of the Josephson medium between the CuO2 superconducting sheets.

Photoacoustic (PA) technique is used to study glass transition and temperature dependence of thermal diffusivity in AsxTe1-x glasses with 0.25 0.60. PA amplitude goes through a minimum and the phase shows a maximum at glass transition temperature Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with temperature shows sharp decrease near Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with composition shows maximum at = 0.40 for all temperatures T Tg.

The temperature dependence of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and a closed-loop coexistence curve are obtained, via Monte Carlo simulations, in the water surfactant limit of a two-dimensional version of a statistical mechanical model for micro-emulsions, The CMC and the coexistence curve reproduce various experimental trends as functions of the couplings. In the oil-surfactant limit, there is a conventional coexistence cure with an upper consolute point that allows for a region of three-phase coexistence between oil-rich, water-rich and microemulsion phases.

The effect of nonmagnetic Ti4+ substitution for Mn4+ on magnetic ordering of La1-xPbxMn1-yTiyO3 (x = 0.15,0.26, and 0.4; 0 less than or equal to y less than or equal to x )has been studied. The ferromagnetic transition temperature and the magnetization decrease with increasing amount of titanium. Complete substitution of Mn4+ by Ti4+, for x = y, excludes the Mn3+-O-Mn4+ double exchange. However, these compounds still show ferromagnetism if the dilution of the Mn sublattice by Ti is small enough (y less than or equal to 0.2). This ferromagnetism probably originates from a ferromagnetic Mn3+-O-Mn3+ superexchange. A thorough study of magnetic properties including AC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, temperature dependence of coercivity and relaxation of remanent magnetization has been carried out and gives evidence of cluster spin glass behaviour for La0.6Pb0.4Mn0.6Ti0.4O3. The effect of high hydrostatic pressure up to 1.5 GPa on ionic motion in (NH4)4Fe(CN)6.1.5H2O has been studied by wide-line 1H NMR experiments performed in the temperature range from room temperature to 77 K. The experiments at room temperature have shown a large increase in the second moment at 0.45 GPa as a result of a pressure-induced phase transition. The temperature dependence study up to 0.425 GPa has shown a gradual increase in the values of activation energy and attempt frequency with increase in pressure. The activation volume for motion at 300 K has been estimated to be 6% of molar volume. Vacancy-assisted ionic jumps are concluded to be the mode of charge transport. Second moments estimated at 77 K show evidence for tunnelling reorientation of at least one of the two NH4+ groups in the compound.

The electronic structure of the insulating sodium tungsten bronze, Na0.025WO3, is investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that near-E-F states are localized due to the strong disorder arising from random distribution of Na+ ions in the WO3 lattice, which makes the system insulating. The temperature dependence of photoemission spectra provides direct evidence for polaron formation. The remnant Fermi surface of the insulator is found to be the replica of the real Fermi surface in the metallic system

We report transport and magnetic properties of a different class of highly conducting polyaniline, doped with boron trihalides BX3 (X=F, Cl, and Br). In order to understand the transport mechanism we analyze the temperature dependence of resistivity of a large number of samples, made by pelletizing doped polyaniline powder and by doping films of polyaniline. We find that the charge transport in this class of conducting polyaniline is driven by the charging-energy limited transport of charge carriers, in contrast to the quasi-one-dimensional variable range hopping conduction prevalent in conventional proton-doped polyaniline samples. Magnetic susceptibility provides further insight into the unusually high intrinsic conductivity behavior.

Phase diagram studies show that at ambient pressure only one ternary oxide, Cu(2)Ln(2)O(5), is stable in the ternary systems Cu-Ln-O (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) at high temperatures. The crystal structure of Cu(2)Ln(2)O(5) can be described as a zig-zag arrangement of one-dimensional Cu2O5 chains parallel to-the a-axis with Ln atoms occupying distorted octahedral sites between these chains. Four sets of emf measurements on Gibbs energy of formation of Cu(2)Ln(2)O(5) (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu; Y) from component binary oxides and one set of high-temperature solution calorimetric data on enthalpy of formation have been reported in the literature. Except for Cu2Y2O5, the measured values for the Gibbs energies of formation of all other Cu(2)Ln(2)O(5) compounds fall in a narrow band (+/-1 kJ mol(-1)) and indicate a regular increase in stability with decreasing ionic radius of the lanthanide ion. The values for the second law enthalpy of formation, derived from the temperature dependence of emf obtained in different studies, show larger differences, as high as 25 kJ mol(-1) for Cu2Tm2O5. Though associated with an uncertainty of +/-4 kJ mol(-1), the calorimetric measurements help to identify the best set of emf data. The trends in thermodynamic data correlate well with the global instability index (GII) based on the overall deviation from the valence sum rule. Low values for the index calculated from crystallographic information indicate higher stability. Higher values are indicative of the larger stress in the structure.

Brillouin scattering studies on single crystals of a charge-ordered manganite, Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3, have been carried out for the first time. The spectra show two modes at similar to 27 GHz (B-mode) and 60 GHz (S-mode). The B-mode frequency and intensity from 300 K to 27 K, covering both the charge ordering transition at 250 K and the antiferromagnetic transition, at 170 K, exactly follow the same temperature dependence as the d.c. magnetic susceptibility. The B-mode is associated With bulk magnetic excitations and the S-mode with surface magnetic excitations of the manganite with ferromagnetic correlations. The study is strongly indicative of the presence of ferromagnetic inhomogeneities in the charge-ordered as well as antiferromagnetic phases.

Results of a theoretical study on ultrasonic attenuation and NMR relaxation in excitonic insulators are reported. The transition rates derived have anomalous temperature dependence owing to the occurrence of coherence factors analogous to the case of superconductors. It is found that these coherence factors are characteristically different for the interband and the intraband scattering processes. It is suggested that experimental observation of these temperature-dependent coherence factors may help identify the existence of an excitonic phase.

Introduction The alum family of double salts with the general formula M1+M3+(RO4)2.12H2O where M1+ is a monovalent ion (M1+ = K, Rb, Cs, Tl, NH4, CH3NH3, NH3OH3 NH3NH2, etc.) and M3+ is a trivalent metal such as Al, Fe, Cr, V, In, Ga, etc. and R is S or Se, form an isomorphous series and their general features indicate a common cubic space group Pa3. Lipson1 showed subsequently that there exist three different structure types agr, β and γ and the structure of a particular alum is dependent on the radius of the monovalent atom. The agr structure is typical of medium sized ions, the β of the larger ones and the γ of the small Na atom.2 Ferroelectricity has been reported only in alums containing NH4, CH3NH3, NH3NH3 and NH3OH. Their hindered rotations as well as the influence of sulphate group disorder on the dielectric behaviour of alums is still not clear.3 No study of the temperature dependence of the low frequency dielectric constant of some of the alums, particularly those of Cs, Rb and Tl, have been made so The present investigation was undertaken to correlate their dielectric behaviour with their composition and structural differences. Under the same experimental conditions, methyl ammonium and ammonium alums also were studied and compared with the known data.
