Our previous investigation showed that the ordered hexagonal island pattern in the phase-separating polymeric blend films of polystyrene and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS/P2VP) formed due to the convection effect by proper control of PS molecular weight, solvent evaporation rate, and the weight ratio of PS to P2VP. In this paper, we further illustrate that, by adding a proper amount of the surfactant Triton X-100 to the PS/P2VP toluene solution, the ordered hexagonal island pattern can be transformed to the ordered honeycomb pattern. The effects of the amount of Triton X-100 on the surface morphology evolution and the pattern transformation are discussed in terms of the collapse of Triton X-100, phase separation between Triton X-100/P2VP and PS, the interfacial interaction between Triton X-100/P2VP and the mica substrate, and the Benard-Marangoni convection.

In this paper, the authors have systematically studied the microphase separation and crystallization during spin coating of an ABC triblock copolymer, polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO). The microphase separation of PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO and the crystallization of PEO blocks can be modulated by the types of the solvent and the substrate, the spinning speed, and the copolymer concentration. Ordered microphase-separated pattern, where PEO and P2VP blocks adsorbed to the substrate and PS blocks protrusions formed hexagonal dots above the P2VP domains, can only be obtained when PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO is dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide and the films are spin coated onto the polar substrate, silicon wafers or mica. The mechanism of the formation of regular pattern by microphase separation is found to be mainly related to the inducement of the substrate (middle block P2VP wetting the polar substrate), the quick vanishment of the solvent during the early stage of the spin coating, and the slow evaporation of the remaining solvent during the subsequent stage. On the other hand, the probability of the crystallization of PEO blocks during spin coating decreases with the reduced film thickness. When the film thickness reaches a certain value (3.0 nm), the extensive crystallization of PEO is effectively prohibited and ordered microphase-separated pattern over large areas can be routinely prepared.

A new kind of hybrid self-assembled film was obtained by means of alternating deposition of the polyoxometalate (POM), K-13[Eu(SiW11-O-39)(2)], and polyacrylamide (PAA) on the 3-aminopropylsilanized precursor film. The experimental results showed that the polyanions were successfully incorporated into the self-assembled multilayers of the polyacrylamide. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was taken to study the surface morphology of the film. The X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) verified that the polyoxometalates were incorporated into the multilayer films with a certain adsorption interaction. The effects of the polyacrylamide on the luminescence of the polyoxometalate were discussed in detail. The luminescence spectra showed that the energy was transferred from the ligands to the Eu3+ ions in the self-assembled films.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 4,4'-thiobisbenzenethiol (TBBT) can be formed on Au surface spontaneously. The structural characteristics and adsorption behavior of TBBT SAMs on Au have been investigated by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), electrochemical cyclic voltammetry (CV), ac impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is demonstrated that TBBT adsorbed on Au by losing a H atom, forming one Au-S bond, and the other mercapto group is free at the surface of the monolayer owing to the presence of the nu(S-H) at 2513 cm(-1) and the delta(C-S-H) at 910 cm(-1) in SERS. The enhancement of the vibration of C-S (1064 cm(-1)), the aromatic C-H vibration (3044 cm(-1)), and the absence of the vibration of S-S illustrate TBBT adsorbed on Au forming a monolayer with one benzene ring tilted with respect to the Au surface. The interpretation of the observed frequencies is aided by ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations at the HF/6-31G* level of theory. Electrochemical CV and EIS indicate TBBT monolayers can passivate the Au effectively for its low ratio of pinhole defects (theta = 99.6%). AFM studies give details about the surface morphology. The applications of TBBT SAMs have been extensively investigated by exposure of Cu2+ ion to TBBT SAMs on Au and covalent adsorption of metal nanoparticles.

A responsive polymer composite film was generated by the use of reversibly switchable Surface morphology of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) films in response to different block selective solvents on the rough isotactic poly(propylene) (i-PP) substrate. The Maximum difference of the water contact angle of the composite films increased from 22.6 degrees of PS-b-PMMA films on the smooth substrate to 42.6 degrees when they were treated by PS and PMMA selective solvents, respectively. The mechanisms of the responsive extent enhanced and the superhydrophobicity of the composite films were discussed in detail.

Self-doped polyaniline (PANI) micro-rings have been successfully generated electrochemically. The polymer forming rings were about 100 nm wide, and the ring diameter is tunable from several to dozens of micrometres depending on deferent current densities. The morphology of such nanostructured polyaniline rings was investigated and further confirmed with field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Furthermore, the film was characterized using UV/visible spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The bubble template formation mechanism of the micro-rings was also proposed. Such nanostructured materials synthesized electrochemically open up a new approach to surface morphology control.

In this paper, an approach for fabricating an active surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is adopted. This approach is based on the assembling of silver nanoparticles film on gold substrate. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and p-aminothiophenol (P-ATP) were used as probe molecules for SERS experiments, showing that this new active substrate has sensitivity to SERS response. Tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) was also used to investigate the surface morphology following the fabricating process of the active SERS substrate, which showed that large quantities of silver nanoparticles were uniformly coated on the substrate.

The surface morphology and crystallization behavior of a weakly segregated symmetric diblock copolymer, poly(styrene-b-6-caprolactone) (PS-b-PCL), in thin films were investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). When the samples were annealed in the molten state, surface-induced ordering, that is, relief structures with uniform thickness or droplets in the adsorbed monolayer, were observed depending on the annealing temperature. The polar PCL block preferred to wet the surface of a silicon wafer, while the PS block wet the air interface. This asymmetric wetting behavior led to the adsorbed monolayer with a PCL block layer having a thickness of around 4.0 nm. The crystallization of PCL blocks could overwhelm the microphase-separated structure because of the weak segregation. In situ observation of crystal growth indicated that the nucleation process preferred to occur at the edge of the thick parts of the film, that is, the relief structures or droplets. The crystal growth rate was presented by the time dependence of the distance between the tip of crystal clusters and the edge. At 22 and 17 degreesC, the average crystal growth rates were 55 +/- 10 and 18 +/- 4 nm/min, respectively.

In this paper, a new method of fabricating multilayers on a carbon substrate is presented. First, a uniformly charged carbon surface was prepared through molecular design. Then an ultrathin film consisting of layer-pairs of oppositely charged polymeric cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and silicotungstate, SiW12O404- (SiW12), was grown layer-by-layer onto the grafted carbon substrate using a molecular self-assembly technique and an electrochemical method. The technique allows one to prepare highly adherent, dense and smooth films of polyoxometalates with special properties. By combining cyclic voltammetry (CV) and X-ray (XR) reflectometry, it was determined that the average surface density of SiW12 was 2.10 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), and the thickness increase per adsorption of PDDA-SiW12 was 1.7 +/- 0.2 nm, indicating that the amount of SiW12 anion per one layer adsorption corresponded to a monolayer coverage. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was also used to examine the surface morphology and determine the grain size distribution and roughness for multilayer films. An increase in root-mean-square (RMS) surface roughness from 7 to 9 Angstrom was observed as the number of layer-pairs in the film increased from 2 to 6. FTIR results showed that the good stability of the multilayer films was due to Coulomb interactions between the SiW12 anion and the polymeric cations PDDA. Moreover, the multilayer films, in acidic aqueous solution, showed good electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of NO2-, and the catalytic currents increased with increasing the layer numbers of SiW12 adsorption. These characteristics of the multilayer films might find potential applications in the field of sensors and microelectronics devices.

The degradation behavior of polyimide (PMDA-ODA) induced by nitrogen laser irradiation was studied. The changes in the surface morphology and the composition of the irradiated polyimide films were examined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and FT-IR spectroscopy. The initial reaction was achieved by photochemical degradation of polyimide in the highly electronic excited state by the absorption of a second 337 nm photon. Atmospheric oxygen sequentially reacted with the produced radicals to form a highly oxidized layer. The formation of carbonyl group was enhanced by the heat remaining on the irradiated polyimide film surfaces. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the graft copolymers of styrene to nascent linear polyethylene reactor powders were prepared through plasma graft polymerization. The grafting reaction was initiated by the alkyl radicals formed on the surface of nascent polyethylene with plasma treatment as indicated by electron spin resonance spectra. In graft copolymerization by alkyl radicals, the grafting yield increased with either the plasma power or the plasma treatment lime. Compared with ordinary polyethylene powders, nascent polyethylene reactor powders were found to be more easily plasma-grafted. This has been attributed to the greater sensitivity to irradiation in producing reactive centres under the same conditions. High density polyethylene showed almost the same grafting yield as linear low density polyethylene at 50 degrees C. The surface morphology of nascent polyethylene observed by scanning electron microscope before and after the grafting showed that the silk-like fibrils were not destroyed by plasma treatment.

Berberine was abstracted from coptis chinensis and its inhibition efficiency on corrosion of mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 was investigated through weight loss experiment, electrochemical techniques and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) with energy disperse spectrometer (EDS). The weight loss results showed that berbefine is an excellent corrosion inhibitor for mild steel immersed in 1M H2SO4. Potentiodynamic curves suggested that berbefine suppressed both cathodic and anodic processes for its concentrations higher than 1.0 x 10(-4) M and mainly cathodic reaction was suppressed for lower concentrations. The Nyquist diagrams of impedance for mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 containing berbefine with different concentrations showed one capacitive loop, and the polarization resistance increased with the inhibitor concentration rising. A good fit to Flory-Huggins isotherm was obtained between surface coverage degree and inhibitor concentration. The surface morphology and EDS analysis for mild steel specimens in sulfuric acid in the absence and presence of the inhibitor also proved the results obtained by the weight loss and electrochemical experiments. The correlation of inhibition effect and molecular structure of berberine was then discussed by quantum chemistry study. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three triazole derivatives (4-chloro-acetophenone-O-1'-(1',3',4'-triazolyl)-metheneoxime (CATM), 4-methoxyl-acetophenone-O-1'-(1',3',4'-triazolyl)-metheneoxime (MATM) and 4-fluoro-acetophenone-O-1'-(1',3',4'-triazolyl)-metheneoxime (FATM)) have been synthesized as new inhibitors for the corrosion of mild steel in acid media. The inhibition efficiencies of these inhibitors were evaluated by means of weight loss and electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. Then the surface morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adsorption of triazole derivatives is found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the thermodynamic parameters were determined and discussed. The relationship between molecular structure of these compounds and their inhibition efficiency has been investigated by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. The electronic properties such as the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels, energy gap (LUMO-HOMO), dipole moment and molecular orbital densities were computed. The concept of pellicular particles was suggested by Horváth and Lipsky over fifty years ago. The reasoning behind the idea of these particles was to improve column efficiency by shortening the pathways analyte molecules can travel, therefore reducing the effect of the A and C terms. Several types of shell particles were successfully marketed around this time, however with the introduction of high quality fully porous silica under 10 μm, shell particles faded into the background. In recent years a new generation of core shell particles have become popular within the separation science community. These particles allow fast and efficient separations that can be carried out on conventional HPLC systems. Chapter 1 of this thesis introduces the chemistry of chromatographic stationary phases, with an emphasis on silica bonded phases, particularly focusing on the current state of technology in this area. The main focus is on superficially porous silica particles as a support material for liquid chromatography. A summary of the history and development of these particles over the past few decades is explored, along with current methods of synthesis of shell particles. While commercial shell particles have a rough outer surface, Chapter 2 focuses on the novel approach to growth of smooth surface superficially porous particles in a step-by-step manner. From the Stöber methodology to the seeded growth technique, and finally to the layer-bylayer growth of the porous shell. The superficially porous particles generated in this work have an overall diameter of 2.6 μm with a 350 nm porous shell; these silica particles were characterised using SEM, TEM and BET analysis. The uniform spherical nature of the particles along with their surface area, pore size and particle size distribution are examined in this chapter. I discovered that these smooth surface shell particles can be synthesised to give comparable surface area and pore size in comparison to commercial brands. Chapter 3 deals with the bonding of the particles prepared in Chapter 2 with C18 functionality; one with a narrow and one with a wide particle size distribution. This chapter examines the chromatographic and kinetic performance of these silica stationary phases, and compares them to a commercial superficially porous silica phase with a rough outer surface. I found that the particle size distribution does not seem to be the major contributor to the improvement in efficiency. The surface morphology of the particles appears to play an important role in the packing process of these particles and influences the Van Deemter effects. Chapter 4 focuses on the functionalisation of 2.6 μm smooth surface superficially porous particles with a variety of fluorinated and phenyl silanes. The same processes were carried out on 3.0 μm fully porous silica particles to provide a comparison. All phases were accessed using elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen sorption analysis and chromatographically evaluated using the Neue test. I observed comparable results for the 2.6 μm shell pentaflurophenyl propyl silica when compared to 3.0 μm fully porous silica. Chapter 5 moves towards nano-particles, with the synthesis of sub-1 μm superficially porous particles, their characterisation and use in chromatography. The particles prepared are 750 nm in total with a 100 nm shell. All reactions and testing carried out on these 750 nm core shell particles are also carried out on 1.5 μm fully porous particles in order to give a comparative result. The 750 nm core shell particles can be synthesised quickly and are very uniform. The main drawback in their use for HPLC is the system itself due to the backpressure experienced using sub – 1 μm particles. The synthesis of modified Stöber particles is also examined in this chapter with a range of non-porous silica and shell silica from 70 nm – 750 nm being tested for use on a Langmuir – Blodgett system. These smooth surface shell particles have only been in existence since 2009. The results displayed in this thesis demonstrate how much potential smooth surface shell particles have provided more in-depth optimisation is carried out. The results on packing studies reported in this thesis aims to be a starting point for a more sophisticated methodology, which in turn can lead to greater chromatographic improvements.
