Despite enormous potential for technological applications, fundamentals of stable non-equilibrium micro-plasmas at ambient pressure are still only partly understood. Micro-plasma jets are one sub-group of these plasma sources. For an understanding it is particularly important to analyse transport phenomena of energy and particles within and between the core and effluent of the discharge. The complexity of the problem requires the combination and correlation of various highly sophisticated diagnostics yielding different information with an extremely high temporal and spatial resolution. A specially designed rf microscale atmospheric pressure plasma jet (µ-APPJ) provides excellent access for optical diagnostics to the discharge volume and the effluent region. This allows detailed investigations of the discharge dynamics and energy transport mechanisms from the discharge to the effluent. Here we present examples for diagnostics applicable to different regions and combine the results. The diagnostics applied are optical emission spectroscopy (OES) in the visible and ultraviolet and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. By the latter spatially resolved absolutely calibrated density maps of atomic oxygen have been determined for the effluent. OES yields an insight into energy transport mechanisms from the core into the effluent. The first results of spatially and phase-resolved OES measurements of the discharge dynamics of the core are presented.

A system capable of deployment as a microwave security sensor which can automatically reject background clutter is presented. The principle of operation is based on analog homodyne detection using 1. Q single side-band down conversion of an AM backscattered modulating signal envelope. A demonstrator is presented which operates with a carrier frequency of 2 GHz and 500 KHz backscattered signal. When deployed in a multipath rich open plan office environment the S/N ratio obtained at the detection output was better than 20 dB at 20 in range with 20 dBm EIRP in a 2 MHz detection bandwidth despite the presence of time varying and static clutter. In this letter, we show how a 2.4-GHz retrodirective array operating in a multipath rich environment can be utilized in order to spatially encrypt digital data. For the first time, we give experimental evidence that digital data that has no mathematical encryption applied to it can be successfully recovered only when it is detected with a receiver that is polarization-matched to that of a reference continuous-wave (CW) pilot tone signal. In addition, we show that successful detection with low bit error rate (BER) will only occur within a highly constrained spatial region colocated close to the position of the CW reference signal. These effects mean that the signal cannot be intercepted and its modulated data recovered at locations other than the constrained spatial region around the position from which the retrodirective communication was initiated.

The authors discuss the imaging properties and transfer of amplitude and phase-modulated signals through a phase conjugating lens (PCL). The authors outline the mechanisms of the near-field and far-field subwavelength imaging of Hertzian dipole sources using PCL, particularly the authors show that one-dimensional subwavelength resolution of multiple sources is possible in the far-field using a PCL augmented with specially designed scatterers located in both the adjacent vicinity of the sources and in the mirror symmetric positions in the image plane. These scatterers enable evanescent-to-propagating spectrum and its dual, propagating-to-evanescent, field conversion. Thus, the subwavelength information encoded into propagating waves on the source side can be extracted on the image side. Next, for the first time the transfer of amplitude and phase modulated signals through a PCL augmented with evanescent-to-propagating spectrum conversion is discussed and it has been demonstrated that multiple amplitude or phase modulated dipole sources can be distinguished in the far-field with subwavelength resolution without the necessity for numerical post-processing of the received data. From the study conducted here, it is concluded that a system of transmitters/receivers augmented with a PCL and appropriate scatterers operates without the need for any numerical processing of the receive data in order to separate channel information from very close proximity stations.
Modulated wavepackets associated with longitudinal dust grain oscillations in a dusty plasma crystal
Resumo:
The nonlinear amplitude modulation of longitudinal dust lattice waves (LDLWs) propagating in a dusty plasma crystal is investigated in a continuum approximation. It is shown that long wavelength LDLWs are modulationally stable, while shorter wavelengths may be unstable. The possibility for the formation and propagation of different envelope localized excitations is discussed. It is shown that the total grain displacement bears a (weak) constant displacement (zeroth harmonic mode), due to the asymmetric form of the nonlinear interaction potential. The existence of asymmetric envelope localized modes is predicted. The types and characteristics of these coherent nonlinear structures are discussed. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

A theoretical study is presented of the nonlinear amplitude modulation of waves propagating in unmagnetized plasmas contaminated by charged dust particles. Distinct well-known dusty plasma modes are explicitly considered, namely, the dust-acoustic wave, the dust-ion acoustic wave, and transverse dust-lattice waves. Using a multiple-scale technique, a nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation is derived, describing the evolution of the wave amplitude. A stability analysis reveals the possibility for modulational instability to occur, possibly leading to the formation of different types of envelope-localized excitations (solitary waves), under conditions which depend on the wave dispersion laws and intrinsic dusty plasma parameters.
