Terrestrial remote sensing imagery involves the acquisition of information from the Earth's surface without physical contact with the area under study. Among the remote sensing modalities, hyperspectral imaging has recently emerged as a powerful passive technology. This technology has been widely used in the fields of urban and regional planning, water resource management, environmental monitoring, food safety, counterfeit drugs detection, oil spill and other types of chemical contamination detection, biological hazards prevention, and target detection for military and security purposes [2-9]. Hyperspectral sensors sample the reflected solar radiation from the Earth surface in the portion of the spectrum extending from the visible region through the near-infrared and mid-infrared (wavelengths between 0.3 and 2.5 µm) in hundreds of narrow (of the order of 10 nm) contiguous bands [10]. This high spectral resolution can be used for object detection and for discriminating between different objects based on their spectral xharacteristics [6]. However, this huge spectral resolution yields large amounts of data to be processed. For example, the Airbone Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) [11] collects a 512 (along track) X 614 (across track) X 224 (bands) X 12 (bits) data cube in 5 s, corresponding to about 140 MBs. Similar data collection ratios are achieved by other spectrometers [12]. Such huge data volumes put stringent requirements on communications, storage, and processing. The problem of signal sbspace identification of hyperspectral data represents a crucial first step in many hypersctral processing algorithms such as target detection, change detection, classification, and unmixing. The identification of this subspace enables a correct dimensionality reduction (DR) yelding gains in data storage and retrieval and in computational time and complexity. Additionally, DR may also improve algorithms performance since it reduce data dimensionality without losses in the useful signal components. The computation of statistical estimates is a relevant example of the advantages of DR, since the number of samples required to obtain accurate estimates increases drastically with the dimmensionality of the data (Hughes phnomenon) [13].

The selective solar absorber surface is a fundamental part of a solar thermal collector, as it is responsible for the solar radiation absorption and for reduction of radiation heat losses. The surface’s optical properties, the solar absorption (á) and the emittance (å), have great impact on the solar thermal collector efficiency. In this work, two coatings types were studied: coatings obtained by physical vapor deposition (PVDs) and coatings obtained by projection with different paints (PCs) on aluminum substrates. The most common industrial high performing solar selective absorbers are nowadays produced by vacuum deposition methods, showing some disadvantages, such as lower durability, lower resistance to corrosion, adhesion and scratch, higher cost and complex production techniques. Currently, spectrally selective paints are a potential alternative for absorbing surfaces in low temperature applications, with attractive features such as ease of processing, durability and commercial availability with low cost. Solar absorber surfaces were submitted to accelerated ageing tests, specified in ISO 22975-3. This standard is applicable to the evaluation of the long term behavior and service life of selective solar absorbers for solar collectors working under typical domestic hot water system conditions. The studied coatings have, in the case of PVDs solar absorptions between 0.93 and 0.96 and emittance between 0.07 and 0.10, and in the case of PCs, solar absorptions between 0.91 and 0.93 and emittance between 0.40 and 0.60. In addition to evaluating long term behavior based on artificial ageing tests, it is also important to know the degradation mechanism of different coatings that are currently in the market. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) allows for the assessment of mechanistic information concerning the degradation processes, providing quantitative data as output, which can easily relate to the kinetic parameters of the system. EIS measures were carried out on Gamry FAS2 Femostat coupled with a PCL4 Controller. Two electrolytes were used, 0.5 M NaCl and 0.5 M Na2SO4, and the surfaces were tested at different immersion times up to 4 weeks. The following types of specimens have been tested: Aluminium with/without surface treatment, 3 selective paint coatings (one with a poly(urethane) binder and two with silicone binders) and 2 PVD coatings. Based on the behaviour of the specimens throughout the 4 weeks of immersion, it is possible to conclude that the coating showing the best protective properties corresponds to the selective paint coating with a polyurethane resin followed by the other paint coatings, whereas both the PVD coatings do not confer any protection to the substrate, having a deleterious effect as compared to the untreated aluminium reference.

PV energy is the direct conversion of solar radiation into electricity. In this paper, an analysis of the influence of parameters such as global irradiance or temperature in the performance of a PV installation has been carried out. A PV module was installed in a building at the University of Málaga, and these parameters were experimentally determined for different days and different conditions of irradiance and temperature. Moreover, IV curves were obtained under these conditions to know the open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current of the module. With this information, and using the first law of thermodynamics, an energy analysis was performed to determine the energy efficiency of the installation. Similarly, using the second law of thermodynamics, an exergy analysis is used to obtain the exergy efficiency. The results show that the energy efficiency varies between 10% and 12% and the exergy efficiency between 14% and 17%. It was concluded that the exergy analysis is more suitable for studying the performance, and that only electric exergy must be considered as useful exergy. This exergy efficiency can be improved if heat is removed from the PV module surface, and an optimal temperature is reached.

Ultraviolet-A radiation (UV-A: 315–400 nm) is a component of solar radiation that exerts a wide range of physiological responses in plants. Currently, field attenuation experiments are the most reliable source of information on the effects of UV-A. Common plant responses to UV-A include both inhibitory and stimulatory effects on biomass accumulation and morphology. UV-A effects on biomass accumulation can differ from those on root: shoot ratio, and distinct responses are described for different leaf tissues. Inhibitory and enhancing effects of UV-A on photosynthesis are also analysed, as well as activation of photoprotective responses, including UV-absorbing pigments. UV-A-induced leaf flavonoids are highly compound-specific and species-dependent. Many of the effects on growth and development exerted by UV-A are distinct to those triggered by UV-B and vary considerably in terms of the direction the response takes. Such differences may reflect diverse UV-perception mechanisms with multiple photoreceptors operating in the UV-A range and/or variations in the experimental approaches used. This review highlights a role that various photoreceptors (UVR8, phototropins, phytochromes and cryptochromes) may play in plant responses to UV-A when dose, wavelength and other conditions are taken into account.

The present work describes the measurement effort for direct normal irradiance (DNI) evaluation in the sunny south of Portugal, with a network of eight radiation measurement stations in several locations (including Évora) providing a good coverage of the region. This new initiative for DNI measurement will still need many years (typically 10 or more) to produce a time series which can claim having long term statistical value. This problem can, however, be temporarily mitigated by measuring DNI at the same time as GHI and DHI, in a place where long term series dating back, already exist for those two. It so happens that a long term series (20 years) of global and diffuse solar irradiation exists for the location Évora. So the expectation is to establish correlations with the goal of attributing at least some long term statistical significance to the short and recent DNI series. The paper describes the setup of the measuring stations and presents the preliminary measurements obtained. It further presents the first correlations of monthly averages between normal beam (DNI), global and diffuse radiation. It then uses these correlations, admittedly without acceptable statistical significance (short series of less than one year of measured data), to exemplify how to get a prediction of long term DNI for Évora. This preliminary obtained value is compared to that predicted by the commercial data from Meteonorm.

Stirling engines with parabolic dish for thermal to electric conversion of solar energy is one of the most promising solutions of renewable energy technologies in order to reduce the dependency from fossil fuels in electricity generation. This paper addresses the modelling and simulation of a solar powered Stirling engine system with parabolic dish and electric generator aiming to determine its energy production and efficiency. The model includes the solar radiation concentration system, the heat transfer in the ther- mal receiver, the thermal cycle and the mechanical and electric energy conversion. The thermodynamic and energy transfer processes in the engine are modelled in detail, including all the main processes occur- ring in the compression, expansion and regenerator spaces. Starting from a particular configuration, an optimization of the concentration factor is also carried out and the results for both the transient and steady state regimes are presented. It was found that using a directly illuminated thermal receiver with- out cavity the engine efficiency is close to 23.8% corresponding to a global efficiency of 10.4%. The com- ponents to be optimized are identified in order to increase the global efficiency of the system and the trade-off between system complexity and efficiency is discussed.

Solar radiation data is crucial for the design of energy systems based on the solar resource. Since diffuse radiation measurements are not always available in the archive data series, either due to the inexistence of measuring equipment, shading device misplacement or missing data, models to generate these data are needed. In this work, one year of hourly and daily horizontal solar global and diffuse irradiation measurements in Évora are used to establish a new relation between the diffuse radiation and the clearness index. The proposed model includes a fitting parameter, which was adjusted through a simple optimization procedure to minimize the Least Square Error as compared to measurements. A comparison against several other fitting models presented in the literature was also carried out using the Root Mean Square Error as statistical indicator, and it was found that the present model is more accurate than the previous fitting models for the diffuse radiation data in Évora.
Cloud parameter retrievals from Meteosat and their effects on the shortwave radiation at the surface

A method based on Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) measured reflectance at 0.6 and 3.9 µm is used to retrieve the cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud effective radius (re) over the Iberian Peninsula. A sensitivity analysis of simulated retrievals to the input parameters demonstrates that the cloud top height is an important factor in satellite retrievals of COT and re with uncertainties around 10% for small values of COT and re; for water clouds these uncertainties can be greater than 10% for small values of re. The uncertainties found related with geometries are around 3%. The COT and re are assessed using well-known satellite cloud products, showing that the method used characterize the cloud field with more than 80% (82%) of the absolute differences between COT (re) mean values of all clouds (water plus ice clouds) centred in the range from ±10 (±10 µm), with absolute bias lower than 2 (2 μm) for COT (re) and root mean square error values lower than 10 (8 μm) for COT (re). The cloud water path (CWP), derived from satellite retrievals, and the shortwave cloud radiative effect at the surface (CRESW) are related for high fractional sky covers (Fsc >0.8), showing that water clouds produce more negative CRESW than ice clouds. The COT retrieved was also related to the cloud modification factor, which exhibits reductions and enhancements of the surface SW radiation of the order of 80% and 30%, respectively, for COT values lower than 10. A selected case study shows, using a ground-based sky camera that some situations classified by the satellite with high Fsc values correspond to situations of broken clouds where the enhancements actually occur. For this case study, a closure between the liquid water path (LWP) obtained from the satellite retrievals and the same cloud quantity obtained from ground-based microwave measurements was performed showing a good agreement between both LWP data set values.

SUMMARY This article attempts to verify the method used by Swartman and Ogunlade (1966) in the areas of Limón, Buenos Aires, Fabio Baudrit (Alajuela), Nicoya and Puntarenas, where data exist concerning solar brilliance, relative humidity and daily global solar radiation based on monthly averages. The validity of this method is proved in reference to the above mentioned study sites, with an acceptable error factor of ± 10% in the majority of the cases. The usage of this method is recommended in the absence of apparatus that measure directly the global solar radiation, because you only need data concerning relative humidity and solar brilliance; data that is directly collected in all of the meteorogical stations located in Costa Rica.

Values of ultraviolet global solar radiation were measured with an ultraviolet radiometer and also predicted with an atmospheric spectral model. The values obtained with the atmospheric spectral model, which is physically based, were analyzed and compared with the experimental values measured in situ. The measurements were performed for different zenith angles under clear skies conditions in Heredia, Costa Rica. The necessary input data include latitude, altitude, surface albedo, Earth-Sun distance, as well as atmospheric characteristics: atmospheric turbidity, precipitable water and atmospheric ozone. The comparisons between the measured and predicted values gave satisfactory results.

Knowledge of direct and diffuse solar radiation in the area is vital importance for the use of solar energy, since it is a prerequesite information for the assessment and design of solar energy system. The work presented here focus on calculation and plotting of contours values of direct and diffuse solar radiation maps based on sixty two scattered radiometric stations nation wide. In the plotting of these contours experimental and predicted values are used, these are compared with the period of dry and rainy season into the six main climate regions of Costa Rica: Central Valley, North Pacific, Central Pacific, South Pacific, North Zone and Caribbean Region. The observed daily mean levels of direct solar radiation oscillate between 6.1 and 10.1 MJ/m2 with higher values in the North Pacific, western part of the Central Valley and in the tops of the highest mountains. The lowest values agree with the North Zone and the Caribbean Region. The highest values of diffuse solar radiation agree with the North Zone and the South Pacific. It is observed an increase of 40% of the direct radiation during dry season months.
