Carbon-supported Pt-TiO2 (Pt-TiO2/C) catalysts with varying at. wt ratios of Pt to Ti, namely, 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1, are prepared by the sol-gel method. The electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), both in the presence and absence of methanol, is evaluated for application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The optimum at. wt ratio of Pt to Ti in Pt-TiO2/C is established by fuel cell polarization, linear sweep voltammetry, and cyclic voltammetry studies. Pt-TiO2/C heattreated at 750 degrees C with Pt and Ti in an at. wt ratio of 2:1 shows enhanced methanol tolerance, while maintaining high catalytic activity toward ORR. The DMFC with a Pt-TiO2/C cathode catalyst exhibits an enhanced peak power density of 180 mW/cm(2) in contrast to the 80 mW/cm(2) achieved from the DMFC with carbon-supported Pt catalyst while operating under identical conditions. Complementary data on the influence of TiO2 on the crystallinity of Pt, surface morphology, and particle size, surface oxidation states of individual constituents, and bulk and surface compositions are also obtained by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive analysis by X-ray, and inductively coupled plasm optical emission spectrometry.
Effect of the method of preparation and pretreatment on the texture of alumina and related catalysts
Resumo:
The effect of the method of preparation and pretreatment on catalyst texture was investigated in the case of alumina, silica-alumina, 10 × molecular sieve and thoria catalysts. All the catalysts were characterised with respect to their specific surface area, surface acidity, pore size distribution and pore volume. The above properties were found to reflect the textural changes that might have been undergone by the catalyst surface as a result of the method of preparation and pretreatment. The method of preparation was found to influence markedly the acidity of the surface and to a lesser extent the surface area and pore size distribution. Acid-treatment was found to increase selectively the acidity of the catalyst while heat-treatment was found to decrease proportionally the acidity as well as surface area of the catalyst.

E-health can facilitate communication and interactions among stakeholders involved in pandemic responses. Its implementation, nevertheless, represents a disruptive change in the healthcare workplace. Organisational preparedness assessment is an essential requirement prior to e-health implementation; including this step in the planning process can increase the chances of programme success. The objective of this study is to develop an e-health preparedness assessment model for pandemic influenza (EHPM4P). Following the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), 20 contextual interviews were conducted with domain experts from May to September 2010. We examined the importance of all preparedness components within a fivedimensional hierarchical framework that was recently published. We also calculated the relative weight for each component at all levels of the hierarchy. This paper presents the hierarchical model (EHPM4P) that can be used to precisely assess healthcare organisational and providers' preparedness for e-health implementation and potentially maximise e-health benefits in the context of an influenza pandemic. Fabrication of multilayer ultrathin composite films composed of nanosized titanium dioxide particles (P25, Degussa) and polyelectrolytes (PELs), such as poly(allyl amine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate sodium salt) (PSS), on glass substrates using the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique and its potentia application for the photodegradation of rhodamine B under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has been reported. The polyelectrolytes and TiO2 were deposited on glass substrates at pH 2.5 and the growth of the multilayers was studied using UV/vis speccrophotometer. Thicknes measurements of the films showed a linear increase in film thickness with increase in number of bilayers. The surface microstructure of the thin films was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope. The ability of the catalysts immobilized by this technique was compared with TiO2 films prepared by drop casting and spin coating methods. Comparison has been made in terms of film stability and photodegradation of rhodamine B. Process variables such as the effect of surface area of the multilayers, umber of bilayers, and initial dye concentration on photodegradation of rhodamine B were studied. Degradation efficiency increased with increase in number of catalysts (total surface area) and bilayers. Kinetics analysis indicated that the photodegradation rates follow first order kinetics. Under maximum loading of TiO2, with five catalyst slides having 20 bilayers of polyelectrolyte/TiO2 on each, 100 mL of 10 mg/L dye solution could be degraded completely in 4 h. The same slides could be reused with the same efficiency for several cycles. This study demonstrates that nanoparticles can be used in wastewater treatment using a simple immobilization technique. This makes the process an attractive option for scale up.

BaZr0.8Y0.2O3- (BZY)-NiO composite powders with different BZY-NiO weight ratios were prepared by a combustion method as anodes for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). After heating to 1100C for 6 h, the composite powders were made of a well-dispersed mixture of two phases, BZY and NiO. Chemical stability tests showed that the BZY-NiO anodic powders had good stability against CO2, whereas comparative tests under the same conditions showed degradation for BaCe0.7Zr 0.1Y0.2O3--NiO, which is at present the most used anode material for proton-conducting SOFCs. Area specific resistance (ASR) measurements for BZY-NiO anodes showed that their electrochemical performance depended on the BZY-NiO weight ratio. The best performance was obtained for the anode containing 50 wt BZY and 50 wt NiO, which showed the smallest ASR values in the whole testing temperature range (0.37 cm2 at 600C). The 50 wt BZY and 50 wt NiO anode prepared by combustion also showed superior performance than that of the BZY-NiO anode conventionally made by a mechanical mixing route, as well as that of Pt.

Thin films of ZrO2 were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering. Annealing of the films exhibited a drastic change in the properties due to improved crystallinity and packing density. The root mean square roughness of the sample observed from atomic force microscope is about 5.75 nm which is comparable to the average grain size of the thin film which is about 6 nm obtained from X-ray diffraction. The film annealed at 873 K exhibits an optical band gap of around 4.83 eV and shows +4 oxidation state of zirconium indicating fully oxidized zirconium, whereas higher annealing temperatures lead to oxygen deficiency in the films and this is reflected in their properties. A discontinuity in the imaginary part of the AC conductivity was observed in the frequency range of tens of thousands of Hz, where as, the real part does not show such behavior.

A low temperature polyol process, based on glycolaldehyde mediated partial reduction of FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O at 120 degrees C in the presence of sodium acetate as an alkali source and 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)-bis-(ethylamine) as an electrostatic stabilizer has been used for the gram-scale preparation of biocompatible, water-dispersible, amine functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) with an average diameter of 6 +/- 0.75 nm. With a reasonably high magnetization (37.8 e.m.u.) and amine groups on the outer surface of the nanoparticles, we demonstrated the magnetic separation and concentration implications of these ultrasmall particles in immunoassay. MRI studies indicated that these nanoparticles had the desired relaxivity for T-2 contrast enhancement in vivo. In vitro biocompatibility, cell uptake and MR imaging studies established that these nanoparticles were safe in clinical dosages and by virtue of their ultrasmall sizes and positively charged surfaces could be easily internalized by cancer cells. All these positive attributes make these functional nanoparticles a promising platform for further in vitro and in vivo evaluations.

α-Manganese dioxide is synthesized in a microemulsion medium by a redox reaction between KMnO4 and MnSO4 in presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate as a surface active agent. The morphology of MnO2 resembles nanopetals, which are spread parallel to the field. The material is further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area. Supercapacitance property of α-MnO2 nanopetals is studied by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling. High values of specific capacitance are obtained.

Nanocrystalline Zn1-xMnxS films (x=0.04, 0.08 and 0.12) were deposited on glass substrates at 400 K using a simple resistive thermal evaporation technique. All the deposited films were characterized by chemical, structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy studies showed that all the films investigated were in nanocrystalline form with the grain size lying in the range 10–20 nm. All the films exhibited cubic structure and the lattice parameters increase linearly with composition. The absorption edge shifted from the higher-wavelength region to lower wavelengths with increase in Mn concentration. The magnetization increased sharply with increase of the Mn content up to x=0.08 and then decreased with further increase of the Mn content. Particularly, Zn0.92Mn0.08S concentration samples show a weak ferromagnetic nature, which might be the optimum concentration for optoelectronic and spintronic device applications.

Isoquinoline was prepared through the Beckmann rearrangement of cinnamaldoxime over different H-zeolites, K-10 montmorillonite clay, amorphous SiO2–Al2O3 and γ-alumina under well-optimized conditions of temperature, weight hourly space velocity and catalyst loading. Cinnamaldoxime under ambient reaction conditions over the catalysts underwent migration of the anti-styryl moiety to electron deficient nitrogen (Beckmann rearrangement) followed by an intramolecular cyclization to yield isoquinoline. Cinnamo-nitrile (dehydration product) and cinnamaldehyde were formed as by-products. Isoquinoline formation was high on zeolite catalysts (ca. >86.5%) and mordenite (ca. 92.3%) was the most efficient in the series. Catalysts were susceptible for deactivation and the decrease in the percentage conversion of oxime with time is associated with a corresponding increase in the acid hydrolysis producing salicylaldehyde at later stages of the reaction. However, these catalysts retain activity considerably and can be recycled without loss of activity and change of product distribution.

Crystalline Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles have been achieved through a modified sol–gel process using a mixture of ethylenediamine and ethanolamine as a solvent. The Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetry (DSC/TG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that well-dispersed 5–60 nm Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were prepared through heat-treating the precursor at 650 °C and the high density pellets were obtained at temperatures lower than those commonly employed. The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the Bi5NbO10 solid solutions were investigated in the 0.1 Hz to 1 MHz frequency range. Two distinct relaxation mechanisms were observed in the plots of dielectric loss and the imaginary part of impedance (Z″) versus frequency in the temperature range of 200–350 °C. The dielectric constant and the loss in the low frequency regime were electrode dependent. The ionic conductivity of Bi5NbO10 solid solutions at 700 °C is 2.86 Ω−1 m−1 which is in same order of magnitude for Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 ceramics at same temperature. These results suggest that Bi5NbO10 is a promising material for an oxygen ion conductor.

The transesterification of methyl salicylate with phenol has been studied in vapour phase over solid acid catalysts such as ZrO2, MoO3 and SO42- or Mo(VI) ions modified zirconia. The catalytic materials were prepared and characterized for their total surface acidity, BET surface area and powder XRD patterns. The effect of mole-ratio of the reactants, catalyst bed temperature, catalyst weight, flow-rate of reactants, WHSV and time-on-stream on the conversion (%) of phenol and selectivity (%) of salol has been investigated. A good yield (up to 70%) of salol with 90% selectivity was observed when the reactions were carried out at a catalyst bed temperature of 200 degrees C and flow-rate of 10 mL/h in presence of Mo(VI)/ZrO2 as catalyst. The results have been interpreted based on the variation of acidic properties and powder XRD phases of zirconia on incorporation of SO42- or Mo(VI) ions. The effect of poisoning of acid sites of SO42- or Mo(VI) ions modified zirconia on total surface acidity, powder XRD phases and catalytic activity was also studied. Possible reaction mechanisms for the formation of salol and diphenyl ether over acid sites are proposed.
