Trends in overall age-standardized, truncated (35-64 years) and age-specific (40 to 49) cancer death certification rates in Switzerland from 1951 to 1984 were analysed. There was a substantial rise in lung cancer mortality in males, with an over 100% increase in overall rates. Thus, in the early 1980's, lung cancer alone accounted for 26% of all cancer deaths in Swiss males. However, male lung cancer rates tended to level off in subsequent cohorts starting from younger middle age in the late 1960's. In females, lung cancer mortality was approximately ten times lower than in males, but rates had been consistently rising since the late 1960's in all age groups. Declines were observed for several neoplasms of the digestive tract: besides stomach (overall decline 68% in males, 77% in females), trends were markedly downwards also for oesophageal cancer in males (-57%), and there was some moderate fall for intestinal sites in both sexes and gallbladder in females. Several trends for other common neoplasms were similar to those observed in other developed countries, such as the declines for (cervix) uteri, the general stability for breast cancer, or the increases in pancreatic cancer and (melanoma) of the skin. A peculiar feature of Swiss data, besides the marked decline in oesophageal cancer in males, was the consistent downward trend in thyroid cancer for both sexes. Thus, overall age-standardized total cancer mortality over the last three decades was moderately upwards in Swiss males, but consistently downwards in females. Male trends were more reassuring in middle age, chiefly in consequence of the flattening in lung cancer rises. Possible interpretations of these trends in terms of aetiological hypotheses (i.e., changes in alcohol drinking and improvements in diet for oesophageal cancer, or reduced prevalence of iodine deficiency for thyroid neoplasms) are discussed.

Harinera La Montserrat, S.A, a company involved in the manufacturing and trading of cereals and flour, was founded in Girona in 1898 by Jos Ensesa y Ca., Sociedad en Comandita. With the objective to determine how the product activity of this business was structured, we have studied in detail the operations that were carried out over the agricultural year 1903-1904. We have focused on three main aspects. Firstly, the purchasing of wheat (origin, transportation, prices); secondly, the production of flour (using internal and external wheat, profits); and thirdly, its distribution (customers, destination). Finally, we have analyzed the profit and loos account for this period in order to find out if this business was profitable

The search for techniques that extend shelf life of guava (Psidium guajava) fruits, and reduce its postharvest losses is desirable. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of concentrations of competitive ethylene antagonist 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on conservation of 'Pedro Sato' guava fruits. Treatments consisted of 0, 100, 300 or 900 nL L-1 of 1-MCP for 3 hours followed by storage at 25C, and 10C with 90±5% RH. The application of 900 nL L-1 1-MCP for 3 hours was efficient in delaying loss of skin color, and in keeping fruit firmness at both storage temperatures. The 300 nL L-1 of 1-MCP concentration was efficient in delaying skin color loss only when fruits were stored at 10C. The effect of 1-MCP was quite significant on the reduction of rot incidence at both storage temperatures. The respiratory rate was lower in fruits treated with 300 and 900 nL L-1 of 1-MCP during storage at 25C. The product was efficient in delaying the ripening of fruits, and the concentration of 900 nL L-1 showed the best effect.

The Greene County, Iowa, overlay project, completed in October, 1973, was evaluated in October, 1978, after five years of service and most recently in October, 1983, after ten years of service. The 33 fibrous concrete sections, four CRCP sections, two mesh reinforced and two plain concrete sections with doweled reinforcement were rated relative to each other on a scale of 0 to 100. The rating was conducted by original members of the Project Planning Committee, Iowa DOT, Iowa County, Federal Highway Administration, University of Illinois and industry representatives. In all, there were 23 and 24 representatives who rated the project in 1978 and 1983 respectively. The 23 or 24 values were then averaged to provide a final rating number for each section or variable. All experimental overlay sections had performed quite well in the period from five through 10 years, experiencing only limited additional deterioration. Based upon this relatively good performance through 10 years, the sections will be maintained for further research with another evaluation at 15 years. The 4" thick nonfibrous mesh reinforced continuous reinforced concrete pavement overlay sections provided the best performance in this research project. Another nonfibrous 5" thick bar reinforced overlay section performed almost as well. The best performance of a fibrous reinforced concrete section was obtained with 160 pounds of fiber per cubic yard.

With inflation, there is no longer a completely adequate budget for highway construction and maintenance. Restricted budgets have generated development and implementation of pavement management programs. A need for management guidelines generated National Cooperative Highway Research Program Synthesis of Highway Practice 84, "Evaluation Criteria and Priority Setting for State Highway Programs". Traffic volumes and present conditions are two major factors in determining the priority of a proposed highway improvement. The Iowa DOT, Highway Division, Office of Materials has been conducting pavement condition inventory surveys on a three-year frequency since 1969 as input for pavement management. Development of substantial wheel rutting on paved roadways results in a potential hazard to highway safety. During periods of rain, these water-filled ruts may cause hydroplaning and loss of vehicle control. It is, therefore, imparitive that Iowa roadways be continually monitored for rut depths and further that this data be used in a pavement management program to determine priorities for rehabilitation or resurfacing.

More and more, integral abutment bridges are being used in place of the more traditional bridge designs with expansion releases. In this study, states which use integral abutment bridges were surveyed to determine their current practice in the design of these structures. To study piles in integral abutment bridges, a finite element program for the soil-pile system was developed (1) with materially and geometrically nonlinear, two and three dimensional beam elements and (2) with a nonlinear, Winkler soil model with vertical, horizontal, and pile tip springs. The model was verified by comparison to several analytical and experimental examples. A simplified design model for analyzing piles in integral abutment bridges is also presented. This model grew from previous analytical models and observations of pile behavior. The design model correctly describes the essential behavioral characteristics of the pile and conservatively predicts the vertical load-carrying capacity. Analytical examples are presented to illustrate the effects of lateral displacements on the ultimate load capacity of a pile. These examples include friction and end-bearing piles; steel, concrete, and timber piles; and bending about the weak, strong, and 45 axes for H piles. The effects of cyclic loading are shown for skewed and nonskewed bridges. The results show that the capacity of friction piles is not significantly affected by lateral displacements, but the capacity of end-bearing piles is reduced. Further results show that the longitudinal expansion of the bridge can introduce a vertical preload on the pile.

Iowa's first field application of synthetic engineering fabrics was on research project HR-158, "Prevention of Reflective Cracking in Asphalt Overlays". This research placed in September 1971 used three different engineering fabrics. A final report concluding generally favorable performance was distributed in May 1977. There have been a number of Iowa engineering fabric installations since that initial project.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a possibilidade de produo de goiaba de boa qualidade comercial, em diferentes pocas do ano, de acordo com podas realizadas em setembro e dezembro de 2003, maro e junho de 2004. Utilizaram-se goiabeiras, cultivar Pedro Sato, com os ramos podados a 30 cm da base, sem desfolhamento, com quatro anos de idade, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso. Avaliaram-se: nmero de frutos produzidos, produo por planta, firmeza, slidos solveis (SS), acidez titulvel (AT), relao SS/AT, pH e acares solveis totais. Observou-se que as pocas de poda afetaram de maneira expressiva as caractersticas avaliadas. A produo de frutos por planta variou de 269,8 a 500,8 e foi inversamente proporcional ao peso dos frutos (186,9 a 205,5 g). A produo foi entre 55,5 e 93,6 kg por planta. O perodo de poda tambm influenciou as caractersticas fsico-qumicas dos frutos, mas no afetou a firmeza. possvel a produo de frutos de boa qualidade ao longo de nove meses do ano, com o manejo das podas.
