An amorphous phase has been synthesized by mechanical alloying in a planetary mill over a nickel content range of 1070 at.% in the Ti---Ni system and a copper content range of 1050 at.% in the Ti---Cu system. In the case of ternary Ti---Ni---Cu alloys the glass-forming composition range has been found to be given by x = 1020 for Ti60Ni40 ? xCux, x = 10 30 for Ti50Ni50 ? xCux and x = 10 40 for Ti40Ni60 ? xCux alloys. The difficulty in the amorphization of copper-rich compositions is explained in the light of enthalpy composition diagrams calculated for the ternary solid solution and the amorphous phase.

Deformation processing and microstructural development of an alpha(2)/O aluminide alloy Ti-25Al-15Nb (at.%) was studied in the temperature range of 950 to 1200 degrees C and strain rate range of 10(-3) to 100 s(-1). Regions of processing and instability were identified using dynamic materials model. Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of alpha(2)/O phase and p phase were seen to occur in the region of 950 to 1050 degrees C/0.001 to 0.05 s(-1) and 1125 to 1175 degrees C/0.001 to 0.1 s(-1), respectively. Unstable flow was seen to occur in the region of 1050 to 1190 degrees C/10 to 100 s(-1). Thermal activation analysis showed that DRX of alpha(2)/O and beta was controlled by cross-slip.

Oxides of the general formula La2-2xSr2xCu1-xII,M(x)(IV)O(4) (M = Ti, Mn, Fe, or Ru), crystallizing in the tetragonal K,NIF, structure, have been synthesized. For M=Ti, only the x=0,5 member could be prepared, while for M=Mn and Fe, the composition range is 0dence for an ordering of Cu(II) and M(IV) in the x = 0.5 members. While the members of the M=Ti, Mn, and Ru series are semiconducting/insulating, the members of the M=Fe series are metallic, showing a broad metal-semiconductor transition around 100 K for O Cu(III)-O-Fe(III) valence degeneracy. Increasing the strontium content at the expense of lanthanum in La2-2xSr2xCu1-xFexO4 for x less than or equal to 0.20 renders the samples metallic but not superconducting. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

A simple, novel, and fast method of preparation of metal nitride powders (GaN, TiN, and VN) using microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction and nitridation has been demonstrated. The procedure uses the respective oxides and amorphous carbon powder as the starting materials. Ammonia gas is found to be more effective in nitridation than high-purity N-2 gas. Complete nitridation is achieved by the use of a slight excess of amorphous carbon. Metals themselves are not found to be effectively nitrided. The products were characterized using XRD, TEM, and SAED and found to possess good crystallinity and phase purity. The method can be of general applicability for the preparation of metal nitrides.

Unstable flow during hot deformation of an alpha(2) titanium aluminide alloy Ti-24Al-20Nb alloy was analysed using two criteria, one of which was developed by Jonas and the other by Kalyankumar. Workability maps were constructed using the alpha parameter as suggested by Semiatin and Lahoti and instability maps were constructed based on the stability parameter xi(epsilon) as suggested by Kalyankumar. Microstructural study was carried out on deformed specimens to validate the two criteria. The results of the two criteria were compared. The particular case of highly negative alpha values has been discussed in detail and it is shown that these correspond to regions of unstable flow.

We describe the design and synthesis of new lithium ion conductors with the formula, LiSr(1.65)rectangle(0.35)B(1.3)B'O-1.7(9) (rectangle = vacancy; B = Ti, Zr; B' = Nb, Ta), on the basis of a systematic consideration of the composition-structure-property correlations in the well-known lithium-ion conductor, La-(2/3-x)Li(3x)rectangle((1/3)-2x)TiO3 (I), as well as the perovskite oxides in Li-A-B,B'-O (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; B = Ti, Zr; B' = Nb, Ta) systems. A high lithium-ion conductivity of ca. 0.12 S/cm at 360 degrees C is exhibited by LiSr(1.65)rectangle(0.35)Ti(1.3)Ta(1.7)O(9) (III) and LiSr(1.65)rectangle(0.35)Zr(1.3)Ta(1.7)O(9) (IV), of which the latter containing stable Zr(IV) and Ta(V) oxidation states is likely to be a candidate electrolyte material for all-solid-state lithium battery application. More importantly, we believe the approach described here could be extended to synthesize newer, possibly better, lithium ion conductors.

As deposited amorphous and crystallized thin films of Ti 37.5% Si alloy deposited by pulsed laser ablation technique were irradiated with 100 keV Xe(+) ion beam to an ion fluence of about 10(16) ions-cm(-2). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the implanted Xe formed amorphous nanosized clusters in both cases. The Xe ion-irradiation favors nucleation of a fcc-Ti(Si) phase in amorphous films. However, in crystalline films, irradiation leads to dissolution of the Ti(5)Si(3) intermetallic phase. In both cases, Xe irradiation leads to the evolution of similar microstructures. Our results point to the pivotal role of nucleation in the evolution of the microstructure under the condition of ion implantation.

The applicability of the confusion principle and size factor in glass formation has been explored by following different combinations of isoelectronic Ti, Zr and Hf metals. Four alloys of nominal composition Zr41.5Ti41.5Ni17, Zr41.5Hf41.5Ni17, Zr25Ti25Cu50 and Zr34Ti16Cu50 have been rapidly solidified to obtain an amorphous phase and their crystallisation behaviour has been studied. The Ti-Zr-Ni alloy crystallises in three steps. Initially this alloy precipitates icosahedral quasicrystalline phase, which on further heat treatment precipitates cF96 Zr2Ni phase. The Zr-Hf-Ni alloy can not be amorphised under the same experimental conditions. The amorphous Zr-Ti-Cu alloys at the initial stages of crystallisation phase-separateinto two amorphous phases and then on further heat treatment cF24 Cu5Zr and oC68 Cu10Zr7 phase are precipitated. The lower glass-forming abilityof Zr-Hf-Ni alloy and the crystallisation behaviour of the above alloys has been studied. The rationale behind nanoquasicrystallisation and the formation of other intermetallic phases has been explained.

Here we report a temperature-dependent Raman study of the pyrochlore ``dynamic spin-ice'' compound Pr(2)Sn(2)O(7) and compare the results with its non-pyrochlore (monoclinic) counterpart Pr(2)Ti(2)O(7). In addition to phonon modes, we observe two bands associated with electronic Raman scattering involving crystal field transitions in Pr(2)Sn(2)O(7) at similar to 135 and 460 cm(-1) which couple strongly to phonons. Anomalous temperature dependence of phonon frequencies that are observed in Pyrochlore Pr(2)Sn(2)O(7) are absent in monoclinic Pr(2)Ti(2)O(7). This, therefore, confirms that the strong phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions, responsible for the temperature-dependent anomalous behavior of phonons, arise due to the inherent vacant sites in the pyrochlore structure. Hypoeutectic boron addition (0.1 wt.%) to Ti-6Al-4V is known to cause significant refinement of the cast microstructure. In the present investigation, it has been observed that trace boron addition to Ti-6Al-4V alloy also ensures excellent microstructural homogeneity throughout the ingot. A subdued thermal gradient, related to the basic grain refinement mechanism by constitutional undercooling, persists during solidification for the boron-containing alloy and maintains equivalent beta grain growth kinetics at different locations in the ingot. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy shows relatively strong texture with preferred components (e.g. ingot axis parallel to[0 0 0 1] or [1 0 (1) over bar 0]) over the entire ingot and gradual transition of texture components along the radius. For Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy, significant weakening characterizes both the high-temperature beta and room-temperature a texture. In addition to solidification factors that are responsible for weak beta texture development, microstructural differences due to boron addition, e.g. the absence of grain boundary alpha phase and presence of TiB particles, strongly affects the mechanism of beta -> alpha phase transformation and consequently weakens the alpha phase texture. Based on the understanding developed for the boron-modified alloy, a novel mechanism has been proposed for the microstructure and texture formation during solidification and phase transformation. In the present study, the beta transus of boron-modified Ti-6Al-4V alloy was found to be almost equivalent to that of the normal alloy, although there is a difference in interstitial element content large enough to produce significant change. Compositional analysis confirms the scavenging ability of the boride particles that are present in the microstructure toward the interstitial elements. This factor can successfully retard the alpha -> beta phase transformation locally and increase the overall beta transus of boron-added material.

Electronic states of CeO(2), Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) , and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x -aEuro parts per thousand y) Ti (y) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) electrodes have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as a function of applied potential for oxygen evolution and formic acid and methanol oxidation. Ionically dispersed platinum in Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x -aEuro parts per thousand y) Ti (y) Pt (x) O(2 -aEuro parts per thousand delta) is active toward these reactions compared with CeO(2) alone. Higher electrocatalytic activity of Pt(2+) ions in CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) compared with the same amount of Pt(0) in Pt/C is attributed to Pt(2+) ion interaction with CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) to activate the lattice oxygen of the support oxide. Utilization of this activated lattice oxygen has been demonstrated in terms of high oxygen evolution in acid medium with these catalysts. Further, ionic platinum in CeO(2) and Ce(1 -aEuro parts per thousand x) Ti (x) O(2) does not suffer from CO poisoning effect unlike Pt(0) in Pt/C due to participation of activated lattice oxygen which oxidizes the intermediate CO to CO(2). Hence, higher activity is observed toward formic acid and methanol oxidation compared with same amount of Pt metal in Pt/C.
