Introduction: TLR-4 has also been identified as a receptor for endogenous alarmins, which are increased post transplantation. TLR-4 has also been associated with a polymorphism that could impact graft outcome. Objective: To assess the expression of TLR-4 in kidney transplant patients carrying or not a polymorphism. Methods: TLR-4 polymorphism (A299G/T399I) was studied in 200 renal transplant patients. Healthy volunteers were also enrolled as control group. The polymorphism analysis was performed using restriction enzymes technique (RFLP). Functionality of TLR-4 polymorphism was assessed in samples from controls by quantification of TNF-alpha after LPS stimulus. TLR-4 and -2 expressions were also analyzed by flow cytometry. Results: TLR-4 polymorphism was present in 8.5% of renal transplant patients. This polymorphism was associated with impairment in TNF-alpha secretion. In general, in renal transplant patients, TLR-4 expression in monocytes and in neutrophils was lower than in health volunteers. TLR-2 and TLR-4 expressions in healthy volunteers with A299G/T399I TLR-4 polymorphism was higher than in wild-type genotype healthy volunteers (p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively), and also higher than A299G/T399I TLR-4 polymorphism renal transplant patients (p<0.05). TLR-2 expression on neutrophils in wild-type genotype renal transplant patients was higher compared to wild-type genotype healthy volunteers, and was also higher in relation to A299G/T399I kidney transplanted patients (p<0.01). Conclusion: Stable renal transplant patients with TLR-4 polymorphism have a lower expression of TLR-4 and TLR-2 receptors in peripheral mononuclear cells, which ultimately indicate a less responsiveness for alarmins. It has been well-documented that leukotrienes (LTs) are released in allergic lung inflammation and that they participate in the physiopathology of asthma. A role for LTs in innate immunity has recently emerged: Cys-LTs were shown to enhance Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis by alveolar macrophages (AMs). Thus, using a rat model of asthma, we evaluated Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis and killing of Klebsiella pneumoniae by AMs. The effect of treatment with a cys-LT antagonist (montelukast) on macrophage function was also investigated. Male Wistar rats were immunized twice with OVA/alumen intraperitoneally and challenged with OVA aerosol. After 24 h, the animals were killed, and the AMs were obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage. Macrophages were cultured with IgG-opsonized red blood cells (50: 1) or IgG-opsonized K. pneumoniae (30: 1), and phagocytosis or killing was evaluated. Leukotriene C(4) and nitric oxide were quantified by the EIA and Griess methods, respectively. The results showed that AMs from sensitized and challenged rats presented a markedly increased phagocytic capacity via Fc gamma R (10X compared to controls) and enhanced killing of K. pneumoniae (4X higher than controls). The increased phagocytosis was inhibited 15X and killing 3X by treatment of the rats with montelukast, as compared to the non-treated group. cys-LT addition increased phagocytosis in control AMs but had no effect on macrophages from allergic lungs. Montelukast reduced nitric oxide (39%) and LTC(4) (73%). These results suggest that LTs produced during allergic lung inflammation potentiate the capacity of AMs to phagocytose and kill K. pneumonia via Fc gamma R. Copyright (C) 2010 S. Karger AG, Basel

Polycrystalline Ni nanowires were electrodeposited in nanoporous anodized alumina membranes with mean diameter of approximately 42 nm. Their magnetic properties were studied at 300 K, by measurements of recoil curves from demagnetized state and also from saturated state. M(rev) and M(irr) components were obtained and M(rev)(M(irr)) H curves were constructed from the experimental data. These curves showed a behavior that suggests a non-uniform reversal mode influenced by the presence of dipolar interactions in the system. A qualitative approach to this behavior is obtained using a Stoner-Wohlfarth model modified by a mean field term and local interaction fields. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Polycrystalline Ni nanowires with different diameters were electrodeposited in nanoporous anodized alumina membranes. First-Order Reversal Curves (FORCs) were measured and FORC distributions were calculated. They clearly showed an asymmetric behavior with a strong maximum at negative interaction fields, evidencing the dominant demagnetizing interactions which depend on the geometry of the nanowires. The hysteretic behavior of mechanically alloyed nanocomposites FeCo + MnO was studied at high temperatures. These composites present an unusual high and thermally stable coercivity, compared to FeCo milled at equal conditions. Coercivity enhancement was observed in hysteresis loops obtained between room temperature and 750 K. It is attributed to the isolation of the FeCo ferromagnetic particles by the paramagnetic MnO (T(N) = 120 K). The M(rev)(M(irr))(H) curves are clearly linear for the composite, indicating that coherent rotation is the reversal mechanism in these materials. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work involved an investigation to ascertain how the substitution of nickel ions for zinc ions affects the structural, morphological and magnetic properties of NiFe(2)O(4) ferrite samples. Ni(1-x)Zn(x)Fe(2)O(4) (x = 0.0, 0.3 0.5, 0.7) powders were prepared by combustion reaction and characterized structurally by X-ray diffraction. The specific surface area of the powders was determined by the nitrogen adsorption method (BET). Magnetization measurements were taken using an alternative gradient magnetometer (AGM), which revealed that the powders prepared by combustion reaction resulted in nanosized particles with a particle size of 18-27 nm. The crystallite size and lattice parameter increased as the concentration of Zn increased. Moreover, augmenting the Zn content in the NiFe(2)O(4) ferrite increased the saturation magnetization and coercive field. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ni-Zn ferrites have been widely used in components for high-frequency range applications due to their high electrical resistivity, mechanical strength and chemical stability. Ni-Zn ferrite nanopowders doped with samarium with a nominal composition of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2-xSmxO4 (x = 0.0, 0.05, and 0.1 mol) were obtained by combustion synthesis using nitrates and urea as fuel. The morphological aspects of Ni-Zn-Sm ferrite nanopowders were investigated by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption by BET, sedimentation, scanning electron microscopy and magnetic properties. The results indicated that the Ni-Zn-Sm ferrite nanopowders were composed of soft agglomerates of nanoparticles with a high surface area (55.8-64.8 m(2)/g), smaller particles (18-20 nm) and nanocrystallite size particles. The addition of samarium resulted in a reduction of all the magnetic parameters evaluated, namely saturation magnetization (24-40 emu/g), remanent magnetization (2.2-3.5 emu/g) and coercive force (99.3-83.3 Oe). The distributions of coercivities and magnetic interactions in a set of polycrystalline Ni(0.8)Fe(0.2)/FeMn bilayers have been determined using the first-order reversal curve (FORC) formalism. The thickness of the permalloy (Py) film was fixed at 10 nm (nominal), while that of the FeMn film varied within the range 0-20 nm. The FORC diagrams of each bilayer displayed two clearly distinguishable regions. The main region was generated by Py particles whose coercivities were enhanced in comparison with those in which the FeMn film was absent (sample O). The minor region was produced by Py particles with coercivities similar to or slightly higher than those of particles in the Py film of sample O. Each sample presented two distributions of interaction fields, one for each region, and both were centred slightly below the exchange-bias field, thus indicating a prevalence of magnetizing interactions. These results are consistent with a grain size distribution in the Py layer and the presence of uncompensated antiferromagnetic moments.

Glass microspheres containing radionuclides are used to treat liver cancer. A promising alternative therapy is being developed based on the magnetic hyperthermia which is related to the heat supplied by a magnetic material under an alternating current magnetic field. The advantage of this option is that most of killed cells are cancer cells which are more susceptible to the temperature raise. In the present work aluminum iron silicate glasses containing minor glass modifiers and nucleating agents were synthesized as irregular shape particles which were further transformed in microspheres by using a petrol liquefied gas-oxygen torch. The optimized processing parameters which lead to microspheres that give a response to the magnetic field were determined. The dissolution rate in water at 90 degrees C was determined to be 3 x 10(-8) g cm(-2) min(-1). The microsphere size distribution was determined by laser scattering. The crystalline phase responsible for the ferromagnetic response was identified as magnetite. Since this phase has a high saturation magnetization and high Curie temperature, it is potentially useful for biomedical applications. The hysteresis magnetic loop was measured for materials produced in different conditions, and some of them showed to be appropriated for thermotherapy. The ratio Fe(3+)/Fe(total) was determined by Mossbauer spectroscopy. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ribbons of nominal composition (Pr(9.5)Fe(84.5)B(6))(0.96)Cr(0.01)(TiC)(0.03) were produced by arc-melting and melt-spinning the alloys on a Cu wheel. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals two main phases, one based upon alpha-Fe and the other upon Pr(2)Fe(14)B. The ribbons show exchange spring behavior with H (c) = 12.5 kOe and (BH)(max) = 13.6 MGOe when these two phases are well coupled. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the coupled behavior is observed when the microstructure consists predominantly of alpha-Fe grains (diameter similar to 100 nm.) surrounded by hard material containing Pr(2)Fe(14)B. The microstructure is discussed in terms of a calculation by Skomski and Coey. A first-order-reversal-curve (FORC) analysis was performed for both a well-coupled sample and a poorly coupled sample. The FORC diagrams show two strong peaks for both the poorly coupled sample and for the well-coupled material. In both cases, the localization of the FORC probability suggests magnetizing interactions between particles. Switching field distributions were calculated and are consistent with the sample microstructure.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the influence of the urea and glycine fuels on the synthesis of Mn-Zn ferrite by combustion reaction The morphology and magnetic properties of the resulting powders were investigated. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption (BET), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), and magnetic measurement of M x H curves. The X-lay diffraction patterns indicated that the samples containing urea resulted in the formation of crystalline powders and the presence of hematite as a secondary phase The samples containing glycine presented only the formation of crystalline and monophases (Mn,Zn)Fe(2)O(4). The average crystallite size was 18 and 35 nm and saturation magnetization was 3.6 and 75 emu/g, respectively, for the samples containing urea and glycine. The samples synthesized with glycine fuel showed better magnetic properties for application as soft magnetic devices. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved

An evaluation was made of the influence of calcination temperatures on the structure, morphology and eletromagnetic properties of Ni-Zn ferrite powders. To this end, Ni(0.5)Zn(0.5)Fe(2)O(4) ferrite powders were prepared by combustion reaction and calcined at temperatures of 800, 1000 and 1200 degrees C/2 h. The resulting powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and reflectivity measurements in the frequency bands of 8-12 GHz. The results demonstrated that raising the calcination temperature increased the particle sizes of the powders of all the systems in question, improving the reflectivity of the materials. This paper reports on a study of Cr(3+)-doped nanosized Ni-Zn ferrites produced by combustion reaction, and evaluates their morphological and magnetic properties. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SEM and magnetic properties. All the compositions showed the formation of the inverse spinel phase of Ni-Zn ferrite. The average crystallite size ranged from 21 to 26 nm. The saturation magnetization was found to be in the range of 53-43 emu/g. The increase in Cr(3+) concentration in the Ni-Zn ferrite caused a reduction in hysteresis losses and a slight reduction in the saturation magnetization. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Films of isotropic nanocrystalline Pd(80)Co(20) alloys were obtained by electrodeposition onto brass substrate in plating baths maintained at different pH values. Increasing the pH of the plating bath led to an increase in mean grain size without inducing significant changes in the composition of the alloy. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant was estimated and the value was of the same order of magnitude as that reported for samples with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. First order reversal curve (FORC) analysis revealed the presence of an important component of reversible magnetization. Also, FORC diagrams obtained at different sweep rate of the applied magnetic field, revealed that this reversible component is strongly affected by kinetic effect. The slight bias observed in the irreversible part of the FORC distribution suggested the dominance of magnetizing intergrain exchange coupling over demagnetizing dipolar interactions and microstructural disorder.
