This work consisted in an experiment installed at Unesp, Campus of Jaboticabal, from January to May 2006 and the objective was to evaluate dry matter accumulated and nutrients by cauliflower, hybrid Verona, during the cycle. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in plots subdivided on the time, with three replications. The plants were sampled at 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120 days after sowing (DAS), and were evaluated: number of leaves, stem length, stem and curd diameter, leaf area, stem, leaves and curd dry matter and accumulate of nutrients. The cauliflower growth had four different phases. In the first one, from 0 to 30 DAS, was correspondent of the period from sowing to transplant. In the second phase, from 30 to 75 DAS, the dry matter accumulated in leaves and stem were small in comparison with the total. The third growth phase, from 75 to 97 DAS, was characterized with great dry matter accumulated, increase in the number of leaves and leaf area. This phase ended with visualization of the curd, and was the beginning to the fourth phase, from 97 to 120 DAS. In the culture estimated in 25,000 plants/ha and productivity of 25.2 t ha(-1) the accumulated quantities with of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S were, corresponding to, 224.5; 54; 156; 136; 21.75; 63.5 kg ha(-1) and 714.8; 270; 236.7 and 33.3 g ha(-1), corresponding to Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu.

Given the importance of heart, especially among the high brassica consumption, coupled with the scarcity of studies that report symptoms of nutritional disorders in the culture, the work was carried out to evaluate the effect of the omission of macronutrients in the development and nutritional status of cabbage, and describe visual symptoms of nutritional deficiency. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions in the UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP. The experiment was arranged in completely randomized design with three replications and seven treatments, corresponding to complete nutritive solution (macro and micronutrients) and individual N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S omission. Plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, shoot, root and whole plant dry mass and macronutrient levels were determined and nutritional deficiency symptoms were described. Individual omissions of N, P, K or Ca were limiting for cabbage growth, considerably reducing plant height, number of leaves, and shoot, root and whole plant dry mass. Nutritional deficiency symptoms were observed for each element. Shoot macronutrient levels in control and nutrient omission treatments were, respectively: N = 31.0-11.9; P = 5.3-0.60; K = 63.5-4.8; Ca = 25.9-4.8; Mg = 5.2-0.5; S = 10.3-1.4 g kg(-1).

The cultivation of pastures in Brazil is mostly done with the species Brachiaria spp. However, there is little research on nutrition with manganese for this forage. It was aimed to asses the effects of manganese in the development and nutrition of marandu grass. The experimental design used was fully randomized, consisting of five rates of manganese ( 0, 15, 30, 60 e 120 mg dm(-3)) and four repetitions. The experimental unit was formed in a vase filled with a Red Latosol dystrophic. There were two cuts, the first after 38 days of transplanting seedling and the second 30 days after the first cut. Was evaluated the content of manganese leaf, the dry mass of the shoot, the number of tillers and the leaf area. The levels of manganese increased its accumulation in the plant, second cut compared to the first cut. The marandu grass showed high tolerance to manganese toxicity, reaching a high leaf content in the shoot without affecting plant growth.

The objectives of the study were to assess changes in fine root anisotropy and specific root lengths throughout the development of Eucalyptus grandis ( W. Hill ex Maiden) plantations and to establish a predictive model of root length density (RLD) from root intercept counts on trench walls. Fine root densities (<1 mm in diameter) were studied in 6-, 12-, 22-, 28-, 54-, 68- and 72-month-old E. grandis plantations established on deep Ferralsols in southern Brazil. Fine root intercepts were counted on 3 faces of 90-198 soil cubes (1 dm(3) in volume) in each stand and fine root lengths (L) were measured inside 576 soil cubes, sampled between the depths of 10 cm and 290 cm. The number of fine root intercepts was counted on one vertical face perpendicular to the planting row (N(t)), one vertical face parallel to the planting row (N(l)) and one horizontal face (N(h)), for each soil cube sampled. An overall isotropy of fine roots was shown by paired Student's t-tests between the numbers of fine roots intersecting each face of soil cubes at most stand ages and soil depths. Specific root lengths decreased with stand age in the upper soil layers and tended to increase in deep soil layers at the end of the rotation. A linear regression established between N(t) and L for all the soil cubes sampled accounted for 36% of the variability of L. Such a regression computed for mean Nt and L values at each sampling depth and stand age explained only 55% of the variability, as a result of large differences in the relationship between L and Nt depending on stand productivity. The equation RLD=1.89*LAI*N(t), where LAI was the stand leaf area index (m(2) m(-2)) and Nt was expressed as the number of root intercepts per cm(2), made it possible to predict accurately (R(2)=0.84) and without bias the mean RLDs (cm cm(-3)) per depth in each stand, for the whole data set of 576 soil cubes sampled between 2 years of age and the end of the rotation.

The sugarcane is a widely adapted species to tropical climate and has made key role in economic development in Southeast and Northeast. The ability to adapt in different environments can be evaluated through the growth analysis and yield. This study aimed to evaluate the growth and yield of four sugarcane varieties (RB92579 and SP79-1011, RB931530 and RB93509) in the third ratoon. The experiment was conducted at the CECA/UFAL, Rio Largo (28 degrees 02'09 '' S, 35 degrees 49'43 '' W and 127m). The experimental design was randomized blocks. Was evaluated monthly the number of plants, height, leaf area index and stem diameter. The quality of raw material, dry matter and yield were evaluated at 360 DAC. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and means compared to each other by Tukey test. The results showed that the maximum tillering occurred at 90 DAC for all varieties, and the RB92579 showed greater tillering and greater height at 360 DAC. The variety RB931530 had superior diameter than the others. The RB92579 and RB93509 were higher than the others on the sugar production, dry matter and yield, however, differed ech only on the matter. Varieties RB92579 and RB931530 had similar levels of Brix, PCC and ATR. Since this latter variable responsible for developing the pricing of sugarcane industry.
