The Phycodnaviridae: The Story of How Tiny Giants Rule the World

The family Phycodnaviridae encompasses a diverse and rapidly expanding collection of large icosahedral, dsDNA viruses that infect algae. These lytic and lysogenic viruses have genomes ranging from 160 to 560 kb. The family consists of six genera based initially on host range and supported by sequence comparisons. The family is monophyletic with branches for each genus, but the phycodnaviruses have evolutionary roots that connect them with several other families of large DNA viruses, referred to as the nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDV).The phycodnaviruses have diverse genome structures, some with large regions of noncoding sequence and others with regions of ssDNA. The genomes of members in three genera in the Phycodnaviridae have been sequenced. The genome analyses have revealed more than 1000 unique genes, with only 14 homologous genes in common among the three genera of phycodnaviruses sequenced to date. Thus, their gene diversity far exceeds the number of so-called core genes. Not much is known about the replication of these viruses, but the consequences of these infections on phytoplankton have global affects, including influencing geochemical cycling and weather patterns.

Improving Students’ Story Problem Solving Abilities

In this action research study of my classroom of 8th grade mathematics students, I investigated if learning different problem solving strategies helped students successfully solve problems. I also investigated if students’ knowledge of the topics involved in story problems had an impact on students’ success rates. I discovered that students were more successful after learning different problem solving strategies and when given problems with which they have experience. I also discovered that students put forth a greater effort when they approach the story problem like a game, instead of just being another math problem that they have to solve. An unexpected result was that the students’ degree of effort had a major impact on their success rate. As a result of this research, I plan to continue to focus on problem solving strategies in my classes. I also plan to improve my methods on getting students’ full effort in class.

Thinkmix: dall'idea alla progettazione dello story network

Thinkmix è un network con componenti social che permette agli utenti di creare storie collaborando. La tesi illustra tutti gli step che hanno portato alla realizzazione di questo network: l'idea, la progettazione, lo sviluppo e la pubblicazione. Ritengo si tratti di un progetto ben riuscito e completo che mi ha permesso di esprimere totalmente le capacità acquisite durante il corso nelle varie materie (e non unicamente nella materia di riferimento) e di avvicinarmi a tematiche esterne a una laurea triennale (sicurezza informatica, marketing, acquisto e gestione di server dedicati, burocrazia per la pubblicazione di applicazione iOS e sito web con dominio).

Survival of the warzone interpreter; behind the untold story

This dissertation examines the complicated and still little-known role of the interpreters in conflict zones. After a brief overview of the figure of the community interpreters, the thesis focuses on the interpreters in conflict zones, local civilians who risk their lives every day in the front line in order to help the Western countries in war. This dissertation shows the danger interpreters face because of their job: they are seen as traitors by their fellow citizens, the Taliban and other insurgent groups and for this reason they are hunted and killed. The purpose of this thesis is to show that Western countries are not doing enough to protect these interpreters, and in particular the United States' case will be analyzed: this country does not offer interpreters the right protection backing exchange, leaving them in the hands of the enemy once the US troops have finished their mission. The latter part of the dissertation presents the main organizations and international projects aimed at helping interpreters who are still trapped in their countries.

Dynamic characterisation of four nine-story large-panel R.C. buildings in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan): A comparison between experimental ambient vibration analysis and numerical finite element modeling

With the outlook of improving seismic vulnerability assessment for the city of Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), the global dynamic behaviour of four nine-storey r.c. large-panel buildings in elastic regime is studied. The four buildings were built during the Soviet era within a serial production system. Since they all belong to the same series, they have very similar geometries both in plan and in height. Firstly, ambient vibration measurements are performed in the four buildings. The data analysis composed of discrete Fourier transform, modal analysis (frequency domain decomposition) and deconvolution interferometry, yields the modal characteristics and an estimate of the linear impulse response function for the structures of the four buildings. Then, finite element models are set up for all four buildings and the results of the numerical modal analysis are compared with the experimental ones. The numerical models are finally calibrated considering the first three global modes and their results match the experimental ones with an error of less then 20%.

J. R. R. Tolkien tra adattamento e invenzione: "The Story of Kullervo" come rielaborazione del poema epico finlandese e proposta di traduzione

Opera di recente pubblicazione, "The Story of Kullervo" è il racconto che più di tutti mostra l'esistenza di un profondo legame tra J. R. R. Tolkien e la lingua e cultura finlandese. Scopo di questo elaborato è quello di analizzare soprattutto il rapporto tra l'autore e il poema epico finlandese, il Kalevala, proponendo la traduzione della storia. L'elaborato è strutturato nel seguente modo: nel primo paragrafo viene trattato il Kalevala come opera letteraria e come fonte di ispirazione per Tolkien. Nel secondo paragrafo viene analizzato il testo del racconto in quanto testo letterario e nel terzo vengono commentate le scelte traduttive effettuate.

Zoë Wicomb's Ghosts. Uncanny Translocations in David's Story and The One That Got Away

This essay analyses Zoë Wicomb's novel David's Story and her latest collection of short stories, The One That Got Away, through the lense of cosmopolitanism and Jacques Derrida's concept of ‘hauntology’. Wicomb is a cosmopolitan author in a very precise sense: an author who embeds locally specific stories in a complex intertextual, historical and transnational web of cross-references. As settings, characters and objects move between Scotland and South Africa, it appears that the histories of these countries are mutually haunted by each other. Uncanny encounters with the past, and with memorials and art objects that take on a spectral quality, evoke an increasing sense of disorientation on the part of protagonists and readers alike. Assumptions about place, history and identity are thus constantly undermined and reconfigured.
