This study evaluated the resistance to demineralization and fluoride incorporation of enamel irradiated with Er:YAG. A total of 110 bovine teeth were selected and divided into eight groups: unlased, 37% phosphoric acid, and samples irradiated with the Er:YAG laser at several fluences (31.84 J/cm(2), 25.47 J/cm(2), 19.10 J/cm(2), 2.08 J/cm(2), 1.8 J/cm(2), and 0.9 J/cm(2)). The application of acidulated phosphate fluoride was performed after treatments. All samples were immersed in 2 ml of 2.0 M acetic-acetate acid solution at pH 4.5 for 8 h, and fluoride, calcium, and phosphorus ions dissolved were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry and spectrophotometry. The phosphoric acid and 31.84 J/cm(2) groups presented the lowest dissolution of calcium and phosphorus ions. Higher fluoride incorporation was observed on 1.8 J/cm(2) and 0.9 J/cm(2) groups. Based on these results, Er:YAG laser was able to decrease acid dissolution and increase fluoride uptake and can be a promissory alternative for preventive dentistry.

LiNbO3 thin films were grown on (0001) sapphire substrates by a chemical route, using the polymeric precursor method. The overall process consists of preparing a coating solution from the Pechini process, based on metallic citrate polymerization, the precursor films, deposited by dip coating, are then heat treated to eliminate the organic material and to synthesize the phase. In this work, we studied the influence of the heat treatment on the structural and optical properties of single-layered films. Two routes were also investigated to increase the film thickness: increasing the viscosity of the coating solution and/or increasing the number of successively deposited layers. The x-ray diffraction theta -2 theta scans revealed the c-axis orientation of the single- and multilayered films and showed that efficient crystallization can be obtained at temperatures as low as 400 degreesC, the phi-scan diffraction evidenced the epitaxial growth with two in-plane variants, A microstructural study revealed that the films were crack free, homogeneous, and relatively dense. Finally, the investigation of the optical properties (optical transmittance and refractive index) confirmed the good quality of the films. These results indicate that the polymeric precursor method is a promising process to develop lithium niobate waveguides.

By means of IR spectroscopy, we determined the teeth ablation mechanism by an Er:YAG laser oscillating at 2.94 mum. Ejected dental material, ablated by the laser from human teeth, was deposited on an IR window and the absorption spectra were measured in the range 2500-20,000 nm. Sound teeth were used, and the corresponding film spectra were compared to spectra obtained by traditional methods. The films spectra obtained do not differ appreciably from those obtained by the traditional method for sound teeth, indicating that the material ejected by an Er:YAG represents the tooth condition. The obtained results confirm that a spectroscopic analysis of a tooth treated with an Er:YAG laser can be done measuring the absorbance of a film composed of ejected material without the need to slice it. In addition, we could determine that the laser absorption occurs mainly by the interstitial water, and the temperature elevation of the ejected material does not exceed 60degreesC. The mechanism of the Yb(3+)-->Er(3+) energy transfer as a function of the donor and the acceptor concentration was investigated in Yb(3+)-Er(3+) codoped fluorozirconate glass. The luminescence decay curves were measured and analyzed by monitoring the Er(3+)((4)I(11/2)) fluorescence induced by the Yb(3+)((2)F(5/2)) excitation. The energy transfer microparameters were determined and used to estimate the Yb-Er transfer rate of an energy transfer process assisted by excitation migration among donors state (diffusion model). The experimental transfer rates were determined from the best fitting of the acceptor luminescence decay obtained using a theoretical approach analog to that one used in the Inokuti-Hirayama model for the donor luminescence decay. The obtained values of transfer parameter gamma [gamma(exp)] were always higher than that predicted by the Inokuti-Hirayama model. Also, the experimental transfer rate, gamma(2)(exp), was observed to be higher than the transfer rate predicted by the migration model. Assuming a random distribution among excited donors at the initial time (t=0) and that a fast excitation migration, which occurs in a very short time (t

Oriented LiNbO3 thin films were prepared using a polymeric precursor solution deposited on (0001) sapphire substrate by spin coating and crystallized in a microwave oven. Crystallization of the films was carried out in a domestic microwave oven. The influence of this type of heat treatment on the film orientation was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and electron channeling patterns, which revealed epitaxial growth of films crystallized at 550 and 650 degreesC for 10 min. A microstructural study indicated that the films treated at temperatures below 600 degreesC were homogeneous and dense, and the optical properties confirmed the good quality of these films. This work reports on the preparation, structural and luminescent studies of nanosized up-converter phosphors Y2O2S:Yb(4%), Er(0.1%) and Y2O2S:Yb(4%), Tm(0.1%),both from polymeric and basic carbonate precursors. The precursors were submitted to a sulphuration process that was previously developed for oxysulfide preparation from basic carbonate. From XRD data, all phosphors presented the oxysulfide phase and the mean crystallite size estimated from the Scherrer formula in the range of 15-20 nm. Polymeric precursor leads to the smallest crystallite size independent on the doping ion. SEM and TEM results confirmed that basic carbonate leads to spherical particles with narrow size distribution and mean diameter of 150 nm, and polymeric precursor smaller spherical particles with diameter between 20 and 40 nm. Up-conversion studies under 980 nm laser excitation showed that Er-doped phosphors present strong green emission related to H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) Er transitions as well as the red ones, F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2). Tm-doped samples show strong blue emission assigned to (1)G(4) --> H-3(6) and also the red ones, related to (1)G(4) --> F-3(4). Therefore, the sulphuration method was successfully applied to prepare nanosized and nanostructured blue and green up-converter oxysulfide phosphors starting from basic carbonate and polymeric precursors. Photoconductivity of SnO2 sol-gel films is excited, at low temperature, by using a 266 nm line-fourth harmonic-of a Nd:YAG laser. This line has above bandgap energy and promotes generation of electron-hole pairs, which recombines with oxygen adsorbed at grain boundary. The conductivity increases up to 40 times. After removing the illumination on an undoped SnO2 film, the conductivity remains unchanged, as long as the temperature is kept constant. Adsorbed oxygen ions recombine with photogenerated holes and are continuously evacuated from the system, leaving a net concentration of free electrons into the material, responsible for the increase in the conductivity. For Er doped SnO2, the excitation of conductivity by the laser line has similar behavior, however after removing illumination, the conductivity decreases with exponential-like decay. Statement of problem. During tooth preparation, both high-speed handpieces and lasers generate heat, which, if not controlled, can cause pulpal necrosis.Purpose. The aim of this study was to compare temperature increases produced by a high-speed dental handpiece with those produced by a relatively new instrument, the Er:YAG (erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet) laser.Material and methods. Thirty bovine mandibular incisors were reduced to an enamel/dentin thickness of 2.5 mm. Class V preparations were completed to a depth of 2.0 mm, measured with a caliper or by a mark oil the burs. A thermocouple was placed inside the pulp chamber to determine temperature increases (degreesC). Analysis was performed on the following groups (n = 10): Group 1, high-speed handpiece without water cooling, Group 11, high-speed handpiece with water cooling (30 mL/min), and Group III, the noncontact Er:YAG laser (2.94 mum at 350 mJ/10 Hz) with water cooling (4.5 mL/min). The temperature increases were recorded by a computer linked to the thermocouples. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The Dunn multiple comparison test was used as post hoc test (alpha = .05).Results. The average temperature rises were: 11.64degreesC (+/-4.35) for Group 1, 0.96degreesC (+/-0.71) for Group 11, and 2.69degreesC (+/-1.12) for Group III. There were no statistical differences between Groups 11 and III, both 11 and III differed from Group I significantly (P = .000 and P = .002, respectively).Conclusion. The preparations made with the high-speed and the laser instrument generated similar heat increases under water cooling. Water cooling was essential to avoid destructive temperature increases when using both the high-speed handpiece and laser.

Objective: This study was conducted to analyze microleakage in Class V cavity preparation, using rewetting (or not) just after burr or Er:YAG laser preparation of enamel and dentin walls in permanent teeth. Background Data: Several studies reported microleakage around composite restorations when cavity preparation was done or treated by Er:YAG laser. As the hybridized laser is removed when this laser is used to cut dental hard tissue, there is a need for new materials or techniques to minimize gaps and microleakage. Results: Primer solution showed significant effect in enamel and dentin, at the level of 5%, when Er:YAG laser was used as a cutting tool. Using primer solution after phosphoric acid in preparations with the laser, microleakage was similar in degree to when cavities were prepared with the burr. Conclusion: Re-wetting surface just after Er:YAG irradiation and chemical treatment with phosphoric acid using HEMA aqueous solution seems to improve the quality of bioattachment between the adhesive system and enamel/dentin, showing similarities between restoration behaviors independently of the cutting tool, whether burr or laser.

The local environment of Er3+ ions in microporous titanosilicate ETS-10 and in synthetic narsarsukite and glassy materials obtained by calcination of ETS-10 has been investigated by EXAFS, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies. Er L-III-edge EXAFS studies of Er3+-doped ETS-10 support the view that the exchanged Er3+ ions reside close to the (negatively charged) TiO6 octahedra. In ETS-10, Er3+ is partially bonded to framework oxygen atoms and hydration water molecules. The Er...Ti distance (3.3 Angstrom) is similar to the Na...Ti distances (3.15-3.20 Angstrom) reported previously for Na-ETS-10. Although the exact location of the ErO6 units within the host structure of Er3+-doped synthetic narsarsukite is still an open question, it is most likely that Er3+ substitutes Ti4+ rather than Na+ ions. EXAFS spectroscopy indicates that no significant clustering of erbium atoms occurs in the titanosilicate samples studied. Evidence for the insertion of Er3+ ions in the framework of narsarsukite has been obtained by Raman spectroscopy. This is indicated by the increasing full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the 775 cm(-1) peak and the increasing intensity of the anatase peaks as the erbium content increases. In addition, as the narsarsukite Er3+ content increases a band at ca. 515 cm(-1) firstly broadens and subsequently a new peak appears at ca. 507 cm(-1).Er3+-doped narsarsukite exhibits a characteristic local vibrational frequency, (h) over bar omega ca. 330 cm(-1), with an electron-phonon coupling, g ca. 0.2, which constitutes additional evidence for framework Er3+ insertion. The number of lines in the infrared emission spectrum of synthetic narsarsukite indicates the presence of two optically-active erbium centres with very similar local environments and an average I-4(13/2) lifetime of 7.8 +/- 0.2 ms.
