The morphology of polyamidelOlO/polypropylene blends was found to significantly depend upon the concentration of the compatibilizer[polypropylene-grafted-acrylic acid (PP-g-AA)]. A significant reduction in phase size was observed because of the interaction that existed between the PP-g-AA and polyamide. These interactions have been confirmed by several methods. The tensile mechanical properties and impact behavior of the prepared blends were investigated and correlated with scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of the fracture surfaces. It was found that PP-g-AA as the compatibilizer has a profound effect upon the properties of the blends. This behavior is attributed to a series of chemical and physico-chemical interactions taking place between the two components.

The effect of lanthanum and calcium on the structure and function of human erythrocyte membranes was investigated by fluorescence polarization, spin- labeled electron spin resonance (ESR) and laser Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that low concentration of La3+ (0.5 mu mol/L) activated a Little (Na++K+)-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase activities, and it inhibited obvi ously the ATPase activities with increasing its concentrations. La3+ lowered the lipid fluidity of human erythrocyte membranes and decreased the vibration intensity of alpha-helix of the protein in the Amide I '. The effect of Ca2+ on the lipid fluidity and alpha-helix of the protein in the Amide I ' was smaller than that of La3+.

ESR method has been used to study superhyperfine. interaction of I-127 in [Cu (IO5OH)(2)](5-) ion for Na4KCu(IO5OH)(2) . 12H(2)O single crystal. The main purpose of this paper is to confirm the existence of unpaired electron spin on iodine atom and to find a reasonable explanation for the spin delocalization of CU2+ ions. Based on the ESR parameters of paramagnetic [Cu(IO5OH)(2)](5-) ions, the calculated results show that about 0.77% of the unpaired eletron spin is located on each iodine atom.

We consider the motion of ballistic electrons within a superlattice miniband under the influence of an alternating electric field. We show that the interaction of electrons with the self-consistent electromagnetic field generated by the electron current may lead to the transition from regular to chaotic dynamics. We estimate the conditions for the experimental observation of this deterministic chaos and discuss the similarities of the superlattice system with the other condensed matter and quantum optical systems.

A quantum Monte Carlo algorithm is constructed starting from the standard perturbation expansion in the interaction representation. The resulting configuration space is strongly related to that of the Stochastic Series Expansion (SSE) method, which is based on a direct power series expansion of exp(-beta*H). Sampling procedures previously developed for the SSE method can therefore be used also in the interaction representation formulation. The new method is first tested on the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. Then, as an application to a model of great current interest, a Heisenberg chain including phonon degrees of freedom is studied. Einstein phonons are coupled to the spins via a linear modulation of the nearest-neighbor exchange. The simulation algorithm is implemented in the phonon occupation number basis, without Hilbert space truncations, and is exact. Results are presented for the magnetic properties of the system in a wide temperature regime, including the T-->0 limit where the chain undergoes a spin-Peierls transition. Some aspects of the phonon dynamics are also discussed. The results suggest that the effects of dynamic phonons in spin-Peierls compounds such as GeCuO3 and NaV2O5 must be included in order to obtain a correct quantitative description of their magnetic properties, both above and below the dimerization temperature.

Effective collision strengths for electron-impact excitation of the phosphorus-like ion Cl III are presented for all fine- structure transitions among the levels arising from the lowest 23 LS states. The collisional cross sections are computed in the multichannel close-coupling R-matrix approximation, where sophisticated configuration-interaction wave functions are used to represent the target states. The 23 LS states are formed from the basis configurations 3s(2)3p(3). 3s3p(4). 3s(2)3p(2)3d, and 3s(2)3p(2)4s, and correspond to 49 fine- structure levels, leading to a total possible 1176 fine- structure transitions. The effective collision strengths. obtained by averaging the electron collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of electron velocities. are tabulated in this paper for all 1176 transitions and for electron temperatures in the ranges T(K) = 7500-25.000 and log T(K) = 4.4-5.3. The former range encompasses the temperatures of particular importance for application to gaseous nebulae. while the latter range is more applicable to the study of solar and laboratory-type plasmas. Measurements of electron velocity distributions emitted at 0degrees for collisions of 10- and 20-keV H+ incident ions on H-2 and He show that the electron capture to the continuum cusp formation, which is still possible at these low impact energies, is shifted to lower momenta than its standard position (centered on the projectile velocity), as recently predicted. Classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations reproduce the observations remarkably well, and indicate that a long-range residual interaction of the electron with the target ion after ionization is responsible for the shifts, which is a general effect that is enhanced at low nuclear velocities.

We discuss a parity nonconserving asymmetry in the cross section of KLL dielectronic recombination of polarized electrons on the hydrogenlike ions with Z less than or similar to 60. This effect is strongly enhanced because of the near degeneracy of doubly excited 2l2l(') states of opposite parity in He-like ions. For ions with Z similar to 30 the asymmetry is of the order of 10(-9). For Z approximate to 48 a level crossing takes place, leading to the PNC asymmetry of -1.3x10(-8), which is 10(8) times greater than the basic strength of the weak interaction in atoms.

The configuration interaction (CI) approach to quantum chemical calculations is a well-established means of calculating accurately the solution to the Schrodinger equation for many-electron systems. It represents the many-body electron wavefunction as a sum of spin-projected Slater determinants of orthogonal one-body spin-orbitals. The CI wavefunction becomes the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation as the length of the expansion becomes infinite, however, it is a difficult quantity to visualise and analyse for many-electron problems. We describe a method for efficiently calculating the spin-averaged one- and two-body reduced density matrices rho(psi)((r) over bar; (r) over bar' ) and Gamma(psi)((r) over bar (1), (r) over bar (2); (r) over bar'(1), (r) over bar'(2)) of an arbitrary CI wavefunction Psi. These low-dimensional functions are helpful tools for analysing many-body wavefunctions; we illustrate this for the case of the electron-electron cusp. From rho and Gamma one can calculate the matrix elements of any one- or two-body spin-free operator (O) over cap. For example, if (O) over cap is an applied electric field, this field can be included into the CI Hamiltonian and polarisation or gating effects may be studied for finite electron systems. Measurement of highly transient electrical charging following high-intensity laser-solid interaction

The multi-million-electron-volt proton beams accelerated during high-intensity laser-solid interactions have been used as a particle probe to investigate the electric charging of microscopic targets laser-irradiated at intensity similar to10(19) W cm(2). The charge-up, detected via the proton deflection with high temporal and spatial resolution, is due to the escape of energetic electrons generated during the interaction. The analysis of the data is supported by three- dimensional tracing of the proton trajectories. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

The transport of an intense electron-beam produced by the Vulcan petawatt laser through dense plasmas has been studied by imaging with high resolution the optical emission due to electron transit through the rear side of coated foam targets. It is observed that the MeV-electron beam undergoes strong filamentation and the filaments organize themselves in a ringlike structure. This behavior has been modeled using particle-in-cell simulations of the laser-plasma interaction as well as of the transport of the electron beam through the preionized plasma. In the simulations the filamentary structures are reproduced and attributed to the Weibel instability.

Phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy, with high temporal resolution, shows that wave-particle interactions play a fundamental role in sustaining capacitively coupled rf plasmas. The measurements are in excellent agreement with a simple particle-in-cell simulation. Excitation and ionization mechanisms are dominated by beam-like electrons, energized through the advancing and retreating electric fields of the rf sheath. The associated large-amplitude electron waves, driven by a form of two-stream instability, result in power dissipation through electron trapping and phase mixing. Resonant strengths have been measured for dielectronic recombination of Li-like iodine, holmium, and bismuth using an electron beam ion trap. By observing the atomic number dependence of the state-resolved resonant strength, clear experimental evidence has been obtained that the importance of the generalized Breit interaction (GBI) effect on dielectronic recombination increases as the atomic number increases. In particular, it has been shown that the GBI effect is exceptionally strong for the recombination through the resonant state [1s2s(2)2p(1/2)](1).

Voltammetric studies of the reduction of oxygen in the room temperature ionic liquid [C(4)dmim][N(Tf)(2)] have revealed a significant positive shift in the back peak potential, relative to that expected for a simple electron transfer. This shift is thought to be due to the strong association of the electrogenerated superoxide anion with the solvent cation. In this work we quantitatively simulate the microdisc electrode voltammetry using a model based upon a one-electron reduction followed by a reversible chemical step, involving the formation of the [C(4)dmim](+)center dot center dot center dot O-2(center dot-) ion-pair, and in doing so we extract a set of parameters completely describing the system. We have simulated the voltammetry in the absence of a following chemical step and have shown that it is impossible to simultaneously fit both the forward and reverse peaks. To further support the parameters extracted from fitting the experimental voltammetry, we have used these parameters to independently simulate the double step chronoamperometric response and found excellent agreement. The parameters used to describe the association of the O-2(center dot-) with the [C(4)dmim](+) were k(f) = 1.4 x 10(3) s(-1) for the first-order rate constant and K-eq = 25 for the equilibrium constant.

In chloroform, [RuCl2(nbd)(py)(2)] (1) (nbd = norbornadiene; py = pyridine) reacts with 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,2,3,4-tetramethyl-1,3-butadiene (1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS) to give the dimer [Ru2Cl3(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(2)]Cl (2a), whereas, in THF [RuCl2(1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(PY)(2)] (3) is isolated as the sole product of reaction. Compound 2 exists as a 4:1 mixture of two noninterconverting isomers, the major with C, symmetry and the minor with either C, or C-2 symmetry. A single-crystal X-ray analysis of [Ru2Cl3 (eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(2)] [SbF6] (2b), the hexafluoroantimonate salt of 2a, revealed that the diphosphine coordinates in an unusual manner, as a eta(4)-six-electron donor, bonded through both P atoms and one of the double bonds of the butadiene tether. Compounds 2a and 3 react with 1,2-ethylenediamine (en) in THF to afford [RuCl2(1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)] (4), which rapidly dissociates a chloride ligand in chloroform to give [RuCl(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)] [Cl] (5a). Complexes 4 and 5a cleanly and quantitatively interconvert in a solvent-dependent equilibrium, and in THF 5a readily adds chloride to displace the eta(2)-interaction and re-form 4. A single-crystal X-ray structure determination of [RuCl(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)][ClO4] (5b) confirmed that the diphosphine coordinates in an eta(4)-manner as a facial six-electron donor with the eta(2)-coordinated double bond occupying the site trans to chloride. The eta(4)-bonding mode can be readily identified by the unusually high-field chemical shift associated with the phosphorus atom adjacent to the eta(2)-coordinated double bond. Complexes 2a, 2b, 4, and 5a form catalysts that are active for transfer hydrogenation of a range of ketones. In all cases, catalysts formed from precursors 2a and 2b are markedly more active than those formed from 4 and 5a.
