School leaders face difficult decisions regarding discipline matters. Often, such decisions play an important role in determining the moral tone of the school and the health of the school community. Many stakeholders are affected by the outcome of such decisions. Codes of conduct, board and school policies, and discipline meetings are often shrouded under secrecy, making the discipline process mysterious. .; In this study I examined the process of moral reasoning. I sought to determine the extent to which school leaders were aware that they were involved in a process of moral reasoning, and ftirthermore, what kind of moral reasoning they practiced. As well, I investigated the ethical grounds and foundations underlying moral reasoning. Thus, in this study I probed the awareness of the process of moral reasoning and sought to find the ethical grounding of decision making. This qualitative study featured short field research. The process involved individual interviews with three different participants: school leaders of a public. Catholic, and an independent school. It found that each school leader practiced moral reasoning to varying degrees through the discipline process. It also explored the possible democratization of moral reasoning by linking to concepts such as fairness, due process, public accountability, and greater participation in the administering of discipline. This study has implications for practice, theory, and future research. The examination of school leaders as the primary focus for discipline matters opens the door to future research that could explore differences between the school systems and possibly other parties affected by moral reasoning in discipline cases.

The ability to introduce DNA and express custom DNA sequences in bacteria opened the door for improvements in a large number of fields including agriculture, pharmacology, medicine, nutrition, etc. The ability to introduce foreign DNA sequences into mammalian cells in an efficient manner would have a large impact on therapeutic applications especially gene therapy. The methods in use today suffer from low efficiencies and sometimes toxicity. In this work a number of factors were evaluated for their effect onONA uptake efficiency. The factors studied included exposure to sublethal concentration of hydrogen peroxide which have been show to lead to destabilisation ofthe lysosomes. These exposures have proven to be very toxic to cells when combined with either the calcium phosphate or the lipofectAMINE® transfection methods. Another factor evaluated was exposure to Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF). This was fuelled by the fact that EMF have been shown to mediate a number of effects on cell structure and/or physiology. EMF exposure by itself was not sufficient to induce the cells to pick up the DNA, therefore its effect on calcium phosphate and lipofectAMINE® was tested. Although some positive results were obtained, the variability of these results exceeded by far any observed enhancements which discouraged any further work on EMF. Also tested was the possible effect the presence of the cytomegalovirus (CMV) sequence might have on DNA uptake (based on previous results in this lab). It was found that the presence ofCMV in the DNA sequence does not enhance uptake or slow down degradation of the internalised DNA. The final factor tested was the effect of basic amino acids on transfection efficiency. It was found that arginine can enhance DNA uptake by about 170% v/ith calcium phosphate and about 200% with LipofectAMINE®. A model was proposed to explain the effect of arginine as well as the lack of effect from other amino acids.

Edward W. Bowslaugh (1843-1923) was the son of Jacob and Anna (Beamer) Bowslaugh. Edward Bowslaugh married Mary Southward, and the couple had six children, Edgar Morley, Edward Freeman, twins Alfred Malcolm and Alice Mary, Annie Olivia, John Jacob and Mabel Florence. Edward W. Bowslaugh was a farmer, contractor and owner of the Grimsby Planing Mills in Grimsby, Ont. and Bowslaugh’s Planing Mill in Kingsville, Ont. The mills manufactured door and sash trim and other wood related products. Some customers contracted the firm to provide wood products for cottages being built at Grimsby Park, the Methodist camp ground. Some time before 1885 Edward Bowslaugh and his family moved to Kingsville, Ont. to open up a new planing mill and door and sash manufactory. He later sold the Grimsby Planing Mills to Daniel Marsh. The diaries and account books include many names of workers as well as friends and family members residing in the Grimsby and Kingsville areas. James M. Bowslaugh (1841-1882) was the son of Jacob and Anna (Beamer) Bowslaugh. James married first Anna Catharine Merritt and after her death in 1875 he married Mary Gee in 1877. James and Anna had three children, Eliza, James Herbert, George Hiram, all died very young. James and Mary Gee had one son, Charles Leopold Kenneth Frederich Bowslaugh, b. 1881. James Bowslaugh was a farmer and lumberman, much like his younger brother Edward. James’ early diaries often note the activities of himself and his brother Edward. Both Edward and James were heavily involved in the Methodist church, teaching or leading Sunday school and attending prayer meetings. Alfred M. Bowslaugh b. 1873 was the son of Edward W. Bowslaugh and his wife Mary Southward. The school notebook is from his days as a student in Kingsville, Ont.

The company specialized in “weathertight casements in iron steel or gun-metal, unbreakable steel windows, fanlight opening-gear, leaded lights and stained glass, patent glass roofing, locks and door furniture, rainwater goods in cast lead and cast iron”. The letter is addressed to Mr. H.Y. [Harry Young] Grant, c/o Fenwick Farm, Lundy’s Lane, Niagara Falls, Ont. from R.W. Smith. The letter is in reply to a query about casement windows. Harry Young Grant (1860-1934), son of Sir James Alexander Grant and Maria Malloch of Ottawa, Ont. was a medical doctor specializing in the treatment of the eye, ear, nose and throat. After his retirement he became a member of the Niagara Parks Commission. He was married to Grace A. Smith, daughter of James R. Smith of Buffalo.

Side door to Founders' Hall, now Roosevelt Hall, Chapman College, Orange, California. Life trustee James Roosevelt’s name graces this historical building, which was originally named Founders’ Hall, until its rededication in 1994. This building completed in 1928 (2 floors, 12,280 sq.ft.) is listed in the National Registry for Historical Buildings and houses the Center for Academic Success, Department of Languages, Division of Social Sciences and the Writing Center. Originally constructed to serve as the Art & Cafeteria Building for Orange Union High School, it was acquired by Chapman in 1954.

It may have been built around the time the county constructed other schools, namely, Grapeview and Glenridge. Nicholson and Macbeth may have been the architects of this school, as some features on the building, ie. the carved stone children’s faces below the lintel of the front door , appear in another known and proven Nicholson and Macbeth building, the former YMCA on Queen Street in St. Catharines. The school remained in operation until 1979 when it was purchased for a church, the Fairview-Louth Community church, which later became Southridge Community church, now located on Glenridge Avenue, St. Catharines, Ont. Today the building is occupied by the Niagara Korean Presbyterian Church.

The Sovereign Great Priority of Canada is a national Masonic organization which consists of seventy-six preceptories that are organized within fifteen districts. The no.8 Plantagenet, St. Catharines is listed under the Hamilton District .The warrant (document issued to authorize formation of a lodge) was issued to this preceptory on November 14th, 1866. This preceptory is still active and meets on the first Monday of every month excepting June, July, August and September. with information from the website Sovereign Great Priory of Canada Meaning of the Tyler/Tiler’s Register: Historically speaking, medieval craft guilds guarded their trade secrets. They placed a guard outside their doors. This person would generally be a junior apprentice who was not entitled to attend trade discussions. The Masons continued this use of doorkeepers. In 1723 in The First Book of Constitutions Dr. James Anderson mentioned “another brother to look after the door, but shall not be a member of it” and in regulation XXVI charged the use of “doorkeepers”. In the minutes of June 8, 1732 this person’s specific title was referred to as “the Tyler”. The word “tyler” appeared in print in new regulation XXVI of the 1738 Second Book of Constitutions. The Masonic ritual of today calls him “a brother without the door”. The Tyler is usually a Past Master who is very knowledgeable in Masonic law and customs. He does not need to be a member of the lodge. He greets brethren and assures that they are “duly qualified”. Les microARNs appartiennent à la famille des petits ARNs non-codants et agissent comme inhibiteurs des ARN messagers et/ou de leurs produits protéiques. Les mi- croARNs sont différents des petits ARNs interférants (siARN) car ils atténuent l’ex- pression au lieu de l’éliminer. Dans les dernières années, de nombreux microARNs et leurs cibles ont été découverts chez les mammifères et les plantes. La bioinforma- tique joue un rôle important dans ce domaine, et des programmes informatiques de découvertes de cibles ont été mis à la disposition de la communauté scientifique. Les microARNs peuvent réguler chacun des centaines de gènes, et les profils d’expression de ces derniers peuvent servir comme classificateurs de certains cancers. La modélisation des microARNs artificiels est donc justifiable, où l’un pourrait cibler des oncogènes surexprimés et promouvoir une prolifération de cellules en santé. Un outil pour créer des microARNs artificiels, nommé MultiTar V1.0, a été créé et est disponible comme application web. L’outil se base sur des propriétés structurelles et biochimiques des microARNs et utilise la recherche tabou, une métaheuristique. Il est démontré que des microARNs conçus in-silico peuvent avoir des effets lorsque testés in-vitro. Les sé- quences 3’UTR des gènes E2F1, E2F2 et E2F3 ont été soumises en entrée au programme MultiTar, et les microARNs prédits ont ensuite été testés avec des essais luciférases, des western blots et des courbes de croissance cellulaire. Au moins un microARN artificiel est capable de réguler les trois gènes par essais luciférases, et chacun des microARNs a pu réguler l’expression de E2F1 et E2F2 dans les western blots. Les courbes de crois- sance démontrent que chacun des microARNs interfère avec la croissance cellulaire. Ces résultats ouvrent de nouvelles portes vers des possibilités thérapeutiques.

En raison de la prématurité ou de conditions médicales, un grand nombre de nouveau-nés reçoivent de la nutrition parentérale totale (NPT) en période néonatale. Durant la période d’administration, l’impact métabolique et les effets néfastes de la NPT et celui de son administration avec des sacs exposés à la lumière sont en grande partie connus. Il est admis que des évènements se produisant in utero ou en période néonatale entraînent des modifications métaboliques chez l'adulte. Mais on ignore si la nutrition parentérale possède des effets à long terme. Le but de notre étude est donc d’évaluer l'effet d'une courte période néonatale de NPT sur le métabolisme énergétique de l’adulte. De J3 à J7, des cochons d'Inde sont nourris par NPT dont le sac et la tubulure sont exposés ou protégés de la lumière et sont comparés à des animaux nourris par voie entérale. Après J7, les trois groupes sont nourris de la même façon, par voie entérale exclusivement. Les animaux nourris par NPT montrent une prise pondérale inférieure, un catabolisme plus marqué et des concentrations de substrats énergétiques abaissées (glucose, cholestérol et triglycérides). À 3 mois, le foie des groupes NPT montre des concentrations de triglycérides et de cholestérol abaissées et des changements d'activité enzymatique. La photoprotection de la NPT néonatale diminue la prise pondérale et les concentrations de triglycérides et de cholestérol hépatiques. Notre étude est la première à explorer l’effet à long terme de la NPT néonatale. Elle ouvre la porte à des études humaines qui permettront, nous l’espérons, d’améliorer la prise en charge des nouveau-nés les plus fragiles et les plus immatures.
