This study collected a sample of YouTube videos in which parents recorded their young children utilizing mobile touchscreen devices. Focusing on the more frequently viewed and highly-discussed videos, the paper analyzes the ways in which babies’ ‘digital dexterity’ is coded and understood in terms of contested notions of ‘naturalness’, and how the display of these capabilities is produced for a networked public. This reading of the ‘baby-iPad encounter’ helps expand existing scholarly concepts such as parental mediation and technology domestication. Recruiting several theoretical frameworks, the paper seeks to go beyond concerns of mobile devices and immobile children by analyzing children’s digital dexterity not just as a kind of mobility, but also as a set of reciprocal mobilizations that work across domestic, virtual and publically networked spaces.

[en] In the first years of the twentieth century Ernest James Bellocq used his camera to capture the image of New Orleans’prosti¬tutes. Years later, in 1978, Louis Malle would be taking the life of this mysterious photographer to the screen in the controversial film Pretty Babe. Delving deeper into the work of these authors, we raise three questions. The first, will be to study the correspondence between the figure of Bellocq and that which Malle recreates. A second approach, will focus on the cinematic representation of them, in which the girls are portrayed in a brothel in Storyville. Finally, we will discuss the photographic act in its entirety and determine the transcription that the filmmaker builds, more definitively how Bellocq’s erotic vision and that of Louis Malle merge in the footage of the director.

A new foliar disease was observed on baby lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) in fields across western New York State, USA. The disease occurred in 10 fields with variable incidence and severity. Symptoms were initially necrotic, tan spots on leaves with red to reddish brown irregular margins that coalesced to encompass the entire leaf and cause abscission. Pycnidia were observed within the lesions. Isolations from diseased leaves yielded several pycnidial forming fungi, including a Didymella species. These isolates were characterized by morphology and sequencing of multiple reference genes (internal transcribed spacer (ITS), partial actin, β- tubulin (tub2), translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF), 28S rDNA large subunit (LSU), rpb2, and calmodulin). A four gene phylogeny (ITS, tub2, LSU, and rpb2) showed that the isolates from baby lima bean belonged to a well-supported clade that contained the type culture of Didymella americana. Pathogenicity of the isolates on three commonly grown cultivars of baby lima bean was confirmed. Symptoms that developed on inoculated plants were similar to those observed on diseased plants in the field. This is the first report of D. americana on baby lima bean.

“Enjoy your baby” Internet-based CBT for mothers with babies: a feasibility randomised control trial
Resumo:
Background: Postnatal depression is a global health problem with lasting effects on the family. Government policy is focussed on early intervention and increasing access to psychological therapies. There is a growing evidence base for the use of computerised CBT packages and this study investigated the feasibility of a CBT-based self-help internet intervention for new mothers. Objective: To assess the ability to recruit mothers, deliver an internet course, obtain follow-up data and evaluate what mothers think of the course. Design: A feasibility randomised control design was used to compare a waiting list control group (delayed access= DA) to the Enjoy Your Baby course (immediate access= IA). Measures were administered at baseline and 8 week follow-up. Methods: Adverts were placed in the Metro freesheet, on charity web pages, on social media, posters were put up in the community, and leaflets were handed out at mother and baby groups. Participants had to be 18 years old or over with a child less than 18 months old. The IA arm was given access to the course straight away. After 8 weeks all participants were asked to recomplete the original measures and those in the IA arm also gave feedback on the course. Participants in the DA arm were given access after recompleting the questionnaires. Due to a lack of follow-up data a small discussion group was conducted. Intervention: The course contains 4 core modules including helping mothers understand why they feel the way they do and helping them build closeness to their babies. Additional modules, worksheets and homework tasks were available. The DA group were given a list of additional support resources and services, and encouraged to seek additional help if required. All participants received weekly automated emails for 12 weeks as they worked through the course. It was not possible to deliver individualised support. 34 Results: Despite using a number of recruitment strategies, recruitment was lower and slower than anticipated, and attrition was high. 41 women, primarily recruited via the internet, were randomised (IA n=21, DA n=20). No significant differences were observed between participants in either arm at baseline and no statistically significant differences were identified when the demographics and baseline measures of participants who logged-on to the course were compared to those who did not, or when participants who completed follow-up measures were compared to those who did not. Pre and post intervention scores on the EPDS approached statistical significance (P=.059, r=.444) favouring the intervention arm. The discussion group suggested strengths of the course and recommended areas for improvement, including making the course more mobile friendly. Conclusion: Internet interventions show promise; however it is difficult to recruit mothers, engagement is low and attrition high. A number of recommendations are made and a further pilot or an internal pilot of a larger substantive study should be conducted to confirm recruitment and retention. Trial ID: ISRCTN90927910.

The paper develops a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model, which assesses the macroeconomic and labor market effects derived from simulating a positive shock to the stochastic component of the mining-energy sector productivity. Calibrating the model for the Colombian economy, this shock generates a whole increase in formal wages and a raise in tax revenues, expanding total consumption of the household members. These facts increase non-tradable goods prices relative to tradable goods prices, then real exchange rate decreases (appreciation) and occurs a displacement of productive resources from the tradable (manufacturing) sector to the non-tradable sector, followed by an increase in formal GDP and formal job gains. This situation makes the formal sector to absorb workers from the informal sector through the non-tradable formal subsector, which causes informal GDP to go down. As a consequence, in the net consumption falls for informal workers, which leads some members of the household not to offer their labor force in the informal sector but instead they prefer to keep unemployed. Therefore, the final result on the labor market is a decrease in the number of informal workers, of which a part are in the formal sector and the rest are unemployed.
