Este artigo é o que o seu título indica: notas de leitura. Na tentativa de vincular atividade docente e investigação, procuro aqui sintetizar temas surgidos a partir dos cursos de Filosofia das Ciências Humanas do Instituto de Letras, Ciências Sociais e Educação da Universidade Estadual Paulista (ILCSE — UNESP, Campus de Araraquara). Temas para discussão, eles procuram alinhar formulações que unem questões Clássicas a problemas contemporâneos: a crise da sociedade burguesa e as origens do totalitarismo, a reprodução da maneira burguesa de ver o mundo, a conquista do aparelho de estado, e a revolução social, o pensamento liberal e o totalitarismo. Constitui tentativa (não certamente acabada) de escrever para o leitor-aluno e, ao mesmo tempo, resgatar uma referência a problemas teóricos que necessitam tratamento mais profundo.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated posteroanterior cephalograms before and after treatment and long term follow-up of Class II division 1 patients treated with bionator. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to demonstrate the transverse growth of maxilla and mandible during and after bionator therapy. METHODS: Measurement of transverse dimensions between posterior maxillary and mandibular implants, as well as the distances between the buccal, gonial and antegonial points were recorded. Measurements were analyzed at three periods: T1 = before bionator therapy, T2 = after bionator therapy and T3 = 5.74 years after T2. RESULTS: There was statistically significant transverse increase due to growth and/or treatment for all variables, except for the distance between the anterior maxillary implants. CONCLUSIONS: During the study period only the anterior maxillary area did not show transverse growth.

Ergonomics, the science of working rationalization, seeks the best relationship between man and his working tools. In Dentistry, ergonomics is present as for the professional working correctly seated, in functional comfort, intervening of supine position patient, by means of suitable equipment and instrument. Nowadays, dental equipment is justly rationalized; however, some instruments should take shape, in order to adapt those requirements. The hand tool design should permit a comfortable, non-slip and safe handling. Thus, anatomical details, the correct position of the operator for its use and specific characteristics of application should be taken into account. The instrument under analysis - forceps - was conceived according to these requirements along with a new alveolar tooth extraction technique, based on electromyographic and biomechanical studies. The morphology of the instrument, which makes possible a simple and natural kinetics of the operator, was obtained by changing the paradigm of the conventional cross-action instruments (whose grip is always on the arms of the tool), divesting the handle from the tool arm. This induced on anatomical conceiving of perpendicular handles to the extremity of the tool arm, resulting an efficient and effective instrument, according to indicated on its experimental phase
