Strategic trade policy, competition, and welfare: the case of voluntary export restraints between Britain and Japan (1971–2002)

I evaluate the voluntary export restraint placed on Japanese automobile exports from 1977 to 1999 by the UK. I show that the policy failed to assist the British domestic car industry. Instead, UK-based US multi-nationals and Japanese manufacturers were the primary beneficiaries, at a substantial cost to UK consumers. Whilst there are a number of caveats, the policy was on balance damaging to the UK economy in welfare terms.

Post-menopausal hormone therapy reduces autoantibodies to oxidized apolipoprotein B100

The aim of the study was to verify whether post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) modifies autoantibody titers against oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (anti-LDLoxi), against epitopes of oxidized apolipoprotein B100 and common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in these women. Sixty-eight women in pre-menopause (PMW) and 216 in post-menopause (POMW) were recruited; eighty-three had undergone HRT for at least 12 months, where 48 received conjugated estrogens alone (EHRT) and 35 received conjugated estrogen and medroxyprogesterone acetate (CHRT). ELISA was used to determine autoantibodies. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL), hepatic lipase (HL), cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) and phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) activities were assayed by radiometric methods. IMT was measured using Doppler ultrasound. Anti-oxidized LDL and anti-D antibodies increased by 40% (p <= 0.003) and 42% (p <= 0.006), respectively, with menopause. There was a surprising and significant 7% reduction in anti-D2 antibody titers with HRT (p <= 0.050), indicating a positive effect of treatment on the immune response to oxidized LDL. Combined HRT decreased activities of HL and LPL. HRT did not change common carotid IMT, which was increased by 32% as expected after menopause (p <= 0.030). This study describes, for the first time, the protective effect of HRT on decreasing autoantibody titers against oxidized apolipoprotein B in LDL.

Limitation of double folding potentials to simulate the polarization in reactions involving halo nuclei

In this work, we investigate the limitation of the use of strength coefficients on double folding potentials to study the presence of the threshold anomaly in the elastic scattering of halo nuclei at near barrier energies. The information capacity of hypercycles

Hypercycles are information integration systems which are thought to overcome the information crisis of prebiotic evolution by ensuring the coexistence of several short templates. For imperfect template replication, we derive a simple expression for the maximum number of distinct templates n(m). that can coexist in a hypercycle and show that it is a decreasing function of the length L of the templates. In the case of high replication accuracy we find that the product n(m)L tends to a constant value, limiting thus the information content of the hypercycle. Template coexistence is achieved either as a stationary equilibrium (stable fixed point) or a stable periodic orbit in which the total concentration of functional templates is nonzero. For the hypercycle system studied here we find numerical evidence that the existence of an unstable fixed point is a necessary condition for the presence of periodic orbits. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Crystal structure of the (Mg,Fe)[UO2(P,As)O-4](2) center dot 10H(2)O solid solution - A novel mineral variety of saleeite

The crystal structure of a novel variety {[(Mg0.81Fe0.19)(H2O)(6)](H2O)(4)}{(UO2)[(P0.67As0.33)O-4]}(2) of the mineral saleeite is determined using X-ray diffraction (Bruker Smart diffractometer, lambda MoK alpha, graphite monochromator, 2 theta(max) = 56.62 degrees, R = 0.0321 for 2317 reflections, T = 100 K). The main crystal data are as follows: a = 6.952(6) angstrom, b = 19.865(5) , angstrom, c = 6.969(2) angstrom, beta = 90.806(4)degrees, space group P12(l)/n1, Z = 2, and P-calcd = 3.34 g/cm(3). It is shown that the structure is formed by alternating (along the [010] direction) anionic layers, which are composed of uranium bipyramids and T(P,As) tetrahedra, and cation layers consisting of M(Mg, Fe) octahedra and water molecules, which are joined through a system of asymmetric hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen atoms are located, the scheme of hydrogen bonds is established, and their geometric characteristics are calculated.

Agrobacterium tumefasciens-mediated transformation of the aquatic fungus Blastocladiella emersonii

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is widely used for plant DNA transformation and more recently, has also been used to transform yeast, filamentous fungi and even human cells. Using this technique, we developed the first transformation protocol for the saprobic aquatic fungus Blastocladiella emersonii, a Blastocladiomycete localized at the base of fungal phylogenetic tree, which has been shown as a promising and interesting model of study of cellular function and differentiation. We constructed binary T-DNA vectors containing hygromycin phosphotransferase (hph) or enhanced green fluorescent protein (egfp) genes, under the control of Aspergillus nidulans trpC promoter and terminator sequences. 24 h of co-cultivation in induction medium (IM) agar plates, followed by transfer to PYG-agar plates containing cefotaxim to kill Agrobacterium tumefsciens and hygromycin to select transformants, resulted in growth and sporulation of resistant transformants. Genomic DNA from the pool o resistant zoospores were shown to contain T-DNA insertion as evidenced by PCR amplification of hph gene. Using a similar protocol we could also evidence the expression of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) in zoospores derived from transformed cells. This protocol can also open new perspectives for other non-transformable closely related fungi, like the Chytridiomycete class. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Growth, increasing returns, and public infrastructure : time series evidence

Initial endogenous growth models emphasized the importance of external effects and increasing retums in explaining growth. Empirically, this hypothesis can be confumed if the coefficient of physical capital per hour is unity in the aggregate production function. Previous estimates using time series data rejected this hypothesis, although cross-country estimates did nol The problem lies with the techniques employed, which are unable to capture low-frequency movements of high-frequency data. Using cointegration, new time series evidence confum the theory and conform to cross-country evidence. The implied Solow residual, which takes into account externaI effects to aggregate capital, has its behavior analyzed. The hypothesis that it is explained by government expenditures on infrasttucture is confIrmed. This suggests a supply-side role for government affecting productivity.

Interviewing the Brazilian military: reflections on a research experience

My purpose is to present some reflections about my experience in interviewing Brazilian military officers. Despite the specificity of the Brazilian case, I trust that these observations may serve as a comparative reference for the study of military institutions in other contexts.

O artigo começa por tentar esclarecer os conceitos de etnografia, por um lado, e de observação participante, por outro, bem como as diferenças e semelhanças entre observação participante e estudo de caso. A partir de um exemplo concreto – descrição interpretativa de uma cultura emergente numa turma de uma escola do primeiro ciclo do ensino básico – é abordada a problemática da recolha de dados, incluindo a questão epistemologicamente crucial da definição de categorias de análise dos dados recolhidos. Com base em literatura pertinente, o artigo avança uma hipótese de organizaçãodaquelas categorias numa estrutura semelhante à das FAQs (frequently asked questions).

Rastreabilidade de subprodutos de origem animal em dietas com levedura e trigo para frangos

O objetivo deste trabalho foi rastrear a inclussão de farinhas de origem animal em rações para frango de corte com ou sem levedura de cana-de-açúcar e farelo de trigo, por meio da análise do músculo peitoral das aves pelas técnicas dos isótopos estáveis de carbono e nitrogênio. Foram utilizados 210 pintos machos (Cobb), com um dia de idade, distribuídos aleatoriamente em sete tratamentos de 30 aves cada, tendo sido um tratamento controle (dieta vegetal) e seis com inclusão de farinha de carne e ossos bovina ou farinha de vísceras de aves na dieta, com ou sem levedura de cana-de-açúcar e farelo de trigo. Aos 42 dias de idade, foram abatidas quatro aves, por tratamento, escolhidas ao acaso, cujo músculo peitoral foi retirado para análise da razão isotópica. Os resultados obtidos foram submetidos à análise multivariada. Os tratamentos experimentais diferiram do tratamento controle, e foi identificada a inclusão de farinha de origem animal, pelas técnicas dos isótopos estáveis, mesmo com inclusão de levedura ou farelo de trigo na dieta.

Determinação dos tipos de resistência em genótipos de feijoeiro ao ataque de Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)

Adubação e inseticidas no controle de Empoasca kraemeri e Bemisia tabaci, em cultivares de feijoeiro semeados no inverno

Vários fatores influenciam a produtividade da cultura do feijoeiro, dentre estes podem ser citados as pragas, merecendo destaque, a cigarrinha verde, Empoasca kraemeri Ross & Moore (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) e principalmente a mosca branca, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), que prejudica o feijoeiro pela transmissão do vírus do mosaico dourado. Este trabalho avalia o efeito de cultivares de feijoeiro, adubação e inseticidas nas populações de E. kraemeri e B. tabaci na época de semeadura de inverno. Os genótipos utilizados foram IAPAR MD-806, IAPAR MD-808, IAC-Carioca e Bolinha. Avaliaram-se, dos 7 aos 56 dias após emergência das plantas, o número de ninfas e adultos de cigarrinha verde e mosca branca, percentual de ataque de cigarrinha e número de plantas com sintomas de mosaico dourado. Na colheita, foram avaliados o número e peso de vagens por planta, o número de grãos por planta e peso de grãos (kg ha-1). Os danos de cigarrinha verde e os sintomas de mosaico dourado foram menos intensos em IAPAR MD-806 e IAPAR MD-808 em relação ao Bolinha e IAC-Carioca. A adubação não influenciou o número médio de adultos de cigarrinha verde nos genótipos de feijoeiro. As aplicações de inseticidas e adubo proporcionaram menores números médios de adultos de mosca branca nos genótipos de feijoeiro quando avaliados em conjunto aos 56 dias após emergência das plantas.
