Nano ceramic alumina powders are synthesized by solution combustion synthesis using aluminium nitrate as oxidizer and urea as fuel with different fuel to oxidizer ratio. The variation of adiabatic flame temperatures are calculated theoretically for different fuel/oxidizer ratio according to thermodynamic concept and correlated with the observed flame (reaction) temperatures. A ``multi channel thermocouple setup connected to computer interfaced Keithley multi meter 2700'' is used to monitor the thermal events occurring during the process. The combustion products, characterized by XRD, show that the powders are composed of polycrystalline oxides with crystallite size of 32 to 52 nm. An interpretation based on maximum combustion temperature and the amount of gases produced during reaction for various fuel to oxide ratio has been proposed for the nature of combustion and its correlation with the characteristics of as-synthesized powder.

We present a critical study of the temperature and field dependence magnetization of high temperature superconductors (HTSCs). The controversial field dependence of dM/dInB for YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) (YBCO) and Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8) (BSCCO) is discussed using different models. Moreover, for both the systems the magnetization (M(H)) dependence is compared with field (H) dependence. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the shape transformation of ZnO nanorods/nanotubes at temperatures (similar to 700 degrees C) much lower than the bulk melting temperature (1975 degrees C). With increasing annealing temperature, not only does shape transformation take place but the luminescence characteristics of ZnO are also modified. It is proposed that the observed shape transformation is due to surface diffusion, contradicting the previously reported notion of melting and its link to luminescence. Luminescence in the green-to-red region is observed when excited with a blue laser, indicating the conversion of blue to white light.

The variation in temperature and concentration plays a crucial role in predicting the final microstructure during solidification of a binary alloy. Most of the experimental techniques used to measure concentration and temperature are intrusive in nature and affect the flow field. In this paper, the main focus is laid on in-situ, non-intrusive, transient measurement of concentration and temperature during the solidification of a binary mixture of aqueous ammonium chloride solution (a metal-analog system) in a top cooled cavity using laser based Mach-Zehnder Interferometric technique. It was found from the interferogram, that the angular deviation of fringe pattern and the total number of fringes exhibit significant sensitivity to refractive index and hence are functions of the local temperature and concentration of the NH4Cl solution inside the cavity. Using the fringe characteristics, calibration curves were established for the range of temperature and concentration levels expected during the solidification process. In the actual solidification experiment, two hypoeutectic solutions (5% and 15% NH4Cl) were chosen. The calibration curves were used to determine the temperature and concentration of the solution inside the cavity during solidification of 5% and 15% NH4Cl solution at different instants of time. The measurement was carried out at a fixed point in the cavity, and the concentration variation with time was recorded as the solid-liquid interface approached the measurement point. The measurement exhibited distinct zones of concentration distribution caused by solute rejection and Rayleigh Benard convection. Further studies involving flow visualization with laser scattering confirmed the Rayleigh Benard convection. Computational modeling was also performed, which corroborated the experimental findings. pplication of pulsed plasma for gas cleaning is gaining prominence in recent years mainly from the energy consideration point of view. Normally, gas treatment is carried out, at or above room temperature, by a conventional dry type corona reactor. However, this treatment is still inadequate in the removal of certain stable gases present in the exhaust/flue gas mixture. The authors report some interesting results of the treatment of such stable gases with pulsed plasma at very low ambient temperature. Also reported in the paper is an improvement in DeNO/DeNOx efficiency using unconventional wet-type reactors, designed and fabricated by the authors, operating at different ambient temperatures. Apart from laboratory tests on simulated gas mixtures, field tests were also carried out on the exhaust gas of a 8 kW diesel engine. Further, an attempt was made to test the feasibility of a helical wire as a corona electrode in place of the conventional straight wire electrode. A comparative analysis of the various tests is presented together with a note on the energy consideration

We report magnetic, dielectric, and magnetodielectric responses of the pure monoclinic bulk phase of partially disordered La2NiMnO6, exhibiting a spectrum of unusual properties and establish that this compound is an intrinsically multiglass system with a large magnetodielectric coupling (8%-20%) over a wide range of temperatures (150-300 K). Specifically, our results establish a unique way to obtain colossal magnetodielectricity, independent of any striction effects, by engineering the asymmetric hopping contribution to the dielectric constant via the tuning of the relative-spin orientations between neighboring magnetic ions in a transition-metal oxide system. We discuss the role of antisite (Ni-Mn) disorder in emergence of these unusual properties.

During summer, the northern Indian Ocean exhibits significant atmospheric intraseasonal variability associated with active and break phases of the monsoon in the 30-90 days band. In this paper, we investigate mechanisms of the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) signature of this atmospheric variability, using a combination of observational datasets and Ocean General Circulation Model sensitivity experiments. In addition to the previously-reported intraseasonal SST signature in the Bay of Bengal, observations show clear SST signals in the Arabian Sea related to the active/break cycle of the monsoon. As the atmospheric intraseasonal oscillation moves northward, SST variations appear first at the southern tip of India (day 0), then in the Somali upwelling region (day 10), northern Bay of Bengal (day 19) and finally in the Oman upwelling region (day 23). The Bay of Bengal and Oman signals are most clearly associated with the monsoon active/break index, whereas the relationship with signals near Somali upwelling and the southern tip of India is weaker. In agreement with previous studies, we find that heat flux variations drive most of the intraseasonal SST variability in the Bay of Bengal, both in our model (regression coefficient, 0.9, against similar to 0.25 for wind stress) and in observations (0.8 regression coefficient); similar to 60% of the heat flux variation is due do shortwave radiation and similar to 40% due to latent heat flux. On the other hand, both observations and model results indicate a prominent role of dynamical oceanic processes in the Arabian Sea. Wind-stress variations force about 70-100% of SST intraseasonal variations in the Arabian Sea, through modulation of oceanic processes (entrainment, mixing, Ekman pumping, lateral advection). Our similar to 100 km resolution model suggests that internal oceanic variability (i.e. eddies) contributes substantially to intraseasonal variability at small-scale in the Somali upwelling region, but does not contribute to large-scale intraseasonal SST variability due to its small spatial scale and random phase relation to the active-break monsoon cycle. The effect of oceanic eddies; however, remains to be explored at a higher spatial resolution.

PEFCs employing Nafion-silica (Nafion-SiO2) and Nafion-mesoporous zirconium phosphate (Nafion-MZP) composite membranes are subjected to accelerated-durability test at 100 degrees C and 15% relative humidity (RH) at open-circuit voltage (OCV) for 50 h and performance compared with the PEFC employing pristine Nafion-1135 membrane. PEFCs with composite membranes sustain the operating voltage better with fluoride-ion-emission rate at least an order of magnitude lower than PEFC with pristine Nafion-1135 membrane. Reduced gas-crossover, fast fuel-cell-reaction kinetics and superior performance of the PEFCs with Nafion-SiO2 and Nafion-MZP composite membranes in relation to the PEFC with pristine Nafion-1135 membrane support the long-term operational usage of the former in PEFCs. An 8-cell PEFC stack employing Nafion-SiO2 composite membrane is also assembled and successfully operated at 60 degrees C without external humidification.

A chemoselective reduction of olefins and acetylenes is demonstrated by employing catalytic amounts of ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O) and aqueous hydrazine (NH2NH2 center dot H2O) as hydrogen source at room temperature. The reduction is chemoselective and tolerates a variety of reducible functional groups. Unlike other metal-catalysed reduction methods, the present method employs a minimum amount of aqueous hydrazine (1.5-2 equiv.). Also, the scope of this method is demonstrated in the synthesis of ibuprofen in aqueous medium.

Since the days of Digital Subscriber Links (DSL), time domain equalizers (TEQ's) have been used to combat time dispersive channels in Multicarrier Systems. In this paper, we propose computationally inexpensive techniques to recompute TEQ weights in the presence of changes in the channel, especially over fast fading channels. The techniques use no extra information except the perturbation to the channel itself, and provide excellent approximations to the new TEQ weights. Adaptation methods for two existing Channel shortening algorithms are proposed and their performance over randomly varying, randomly perturbed channels is studied. The proposed adaptation techniques are shown to perform admirably well for small changes in channels for OFDM systems. (C) 2012 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Three-dimensional numerical study of natural convection in a vertical channel with flush-mounted discrete heaters on opposite conductive substrate walls is carried out in the present work. Detailed flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for various Grashof numbers. The heat transfer effects on one wall by the presence of heaters on its opposite wall is examined. It is found that heat transfer rates on one wall are increased by the presence of heaters on its opposite wall. The thermal boundary layers on the opposite walls complement each other for enhanced heat transfer. The effects of spacing between the heated walls, spacings between heaters and substrate conductivity on flow and heat transfer are examined. Existence of optimum spacings between the heated walls for maximum heat transfer and mass flow are observed. It is found that the heat transfer and fluid flow do not follow the same optimum spacings. Mass flow rate reaches maximum value at a wall spacing greater than the spacing for maximum heat transfer. This is because the interaction of thermal boundary layers on individual walls ceases at a lower spacing before the velocity boundary layers separate each other. It is found that increased spacings between heaters reduce individual heater temperatures provided the heaters close to exit on both substrates avail sufficient substrate potions on the exit side. Insufficient substrate portions between the exit heaters and the exit cause abnormal local temperature rise in the exit heaters which are the hottest ones among all the heaters. Optimal heater spacings exist for minimum hottest heater temperature rise. Correlations are presented for dimensionless mass flow rate, temperature maximum, and average Nusselt number.

Temperature dependent X-ray powder diffraction and dielectric studies have been carried out on tetragonal compositions of (1-x) PbTiO 3(x) BiMeO 3; Me similar to Sc and Zn 1/2 Ti 1/2. The cubic and the tetragonal phases coexist over more than 100 degrees C for 0.70 PbTiO 30.3 Bi ( Zn 1/2 Ti 1/2) O 3 and 0.66 PbTiO 30.34 BiScO 3. The wide temperature range of phase coexistence is shown to be an intrinsic feature of the system, and is attributed to the increase in the degree of the covalent character of the ( Pb +Bi ) O bond with increasing concentration of Bi at the Pb -site. The d-values of the {111} planes of the coexisting phases are nearly identical, suggesting this plane to be the invariant plane for the martensitic type cubic-tetragonal transformation occurring in these systems.

DC reactive magnetron sputtering technique was employed for deposition of titanium dioxide (TiO2) films. The films were formed on Corning glass and p-Si (100) substrates by sputtering of titanium target in an oxygen partial pressure of 6x10-2 Pa and at different substrate temperatures in the range 303 673 K. The films formed at 303 K were X-ray amorphous whereas those deposited at substrate temperatures?=?473 K were transformed into polycrystalline nature with anatase phase of TiO2. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies confirmed the presence of characteristic bonding configuration of TiO2. The surface morphology of the films was significantly influenced by the substrate temperature. MOS capacitor with Al/TiO2/p-Si sandwich structure was fabricated and performed currentvoltage and capacitancevoltage characteristics. At an applied gate voltage of 1.5 V, the leakage current density of the device decreased from 1.8?x?10-6 to 5.4?x?10-8 A/cm2 with the increase of substrate temperature from 303 to 673 K. The electrical conduction in the MOS structure was more predominant with Schottky emission and Fowler-Nordheim conduction. The dielectric constant (at 1 MHz) of the films increased from 6 to 20 with increase of substrate temperature. The optical band gap of the films increased from 3.50 to 3.56 eV and refractive index from 2.20 to 2.37 with the increase of substrate temperature from 303 to 673 K. We revisit the assignment of Raman phonons of rare-earth titanates by performing Raman measurements on single crystals of O18 isotope-rich spin ice Dy2Ti2O718 and nonmagnetic Lu2Ti2O718 pyrochlores and compare the results with their O16 counterparts. We show that the low-wavenumber Raman modes below 250 cm-1 are not due to oxygen vibrations. A mode near 200 cm-1, commonly assigned as F2g phonon, which shows highly anomalous temperature dependence, is now assigned to a disorder-induced Raman active mode involving Ti4+ vibrations. Moreover, we address here the origin of the new Raman mode, observed below TC similar to 110 K in Dy2Ti2O7, through a simultaneous pressure-dependent and temperature-dependent Raman study. Our study confirms the new mode to be a phonon mode. We find that dTC/dP = + 5.9 K/GPa. Temperature dependence of other phonons has also been studied at various pressures up to similar to 8 GPa. We find that pressure suppresses the anomalous temperature dependence. The role of the inherent vacant sites present in the pyrochlore structure in the anomalous temperature dependence is also discussed. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
