We report a quantum-chemical study of electronic, optical and charge transporting properties of four platinum (II) complexes, pt((CN)-N-Lambda)(2) ((CN)-N-Lambda=phenylpyridine or thiophenepyridine). The lowest-lying absorptions at 442, 440, 447 and 429 nm are all attributed to the mixed transition characters of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and ligand-centered (LC) pi - pi(*) transition. While, unexpectedly, the lowest-lying phosphorescent emissions at 663, 660, 675 and 742 nm are mainly from metal-to-ligand charge transfer ((MLCT)-M-3) ligand-centered (LC) pi ->pi* transition. Ionization potential (IP), electron affinities (EA) and reorganization energy P (lambda(hole/electron)) were obtained to evaluate the charge transfer and balance properties between hole and electron.

Real-space self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is employed to study the effect of solvent molecular size on the self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymer in selective solvent. The phase diagrams in wide ranges of interaction parameters and solvent molecular size were obtained in present study. The results indicate that the solvent molecular size is a key factor that determines the self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymer. The self-assembled morphology changes from circle-like micelle to line-like micelle, then to loop-like micelle by decreasing the solvent molecular size in a wide range of solvent selectivity. We analyze and discuss this change in terms of the solvent solubility and the entropy contribution.

Highly uniform and well-dispersed CeO2 and CeO2:Eu3+ (Sm3+, Tb3+) nanocrystals were prepared by a nonhydrolytic solution route and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), UV/vis absorption, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra, respectively. The result of XRD indicates that the CeO2 nanocrystals are well crystallized with a cubic structure. The TEM images illustrate that the average size of CeO2 nanocrystals is about 3.5 nm in diameter. The absorption spectrum of CeO2:Eu3+ nanocrystals exhibits red-shifting with respect to that of the undoped CeO2 nanocrystals. Under the excitation of 440 nm (or 426 nm) light, the colloidal solution of the undoped CeO2 nanocrystals shows a very weak emission band with a maximum at 501 nm, which is remarkably enhanced by doping additional lanthanide ions (Eu3+, Tb3+, Sm3+) in the CeO2 nanocrystals. The emission band is not due to the characteristic emission of the lanthanide ions but might arise from the oxygen vacancy which is introduced in the fluorite lattice of the CeO2 nanocrystals to compensate the effective negative charge associated with the trivalent ions.

Nano-submicrostructured CaWO4, CaWO4 : Pb2+ and CaWO4 : Tb3+ particles were prepared by polyol method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), photoluminescence (PL), cathodo-luminescence (CL) spectra and PL lifetimes. The results of XRD indicate that the as-prepared samples are well crystallized with the scheelite structure of CaWO4. The FE-SEM images illustrate that CaWO4 and CaWO4 : Pb2+ and CaWO4 : Tb3+ powders are composed of spherical particles with sizes around 260, 290, and 190 nm respectively, which are the aggregates of smaller nanoparticles around 10-20 nm. Under the UV light or electron beam excitation, the CaWO4 powders exhibits a blue emission band with a maximum at about 440 nm. When the CaWO4 particles are doped with Pb2+, the intensity of luminescence is enhanced to some extent and the luminescence band maximum is red shifted to 460 nm. Tb3+-doped CaWO4 particles show the characteristic emission of Tb3+ D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J=6-3) transitions due to an energy transfer from WO42- groups to Tb3+.

Ti44Zr32Ni22Cu2 and Ti41Zr29Ni28Cu2 alloys were prepared by the melt-spinning method. The phase structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, and the electrochemical performances of the melt-spun alloys were investigated. The results indicated that the Ti44Zr32Ni22Cu2 alloy was composed of the icosahedral quasicrystals and amorphous phases, and the Ti41Zr29Ni28Cu2 alloy comprised icosahedral quasicrystals, amorphous, and Laves phases. The maximum discharge capacity was 141 mAh/g for the Ti44Zr32Ni22Cu2 alloy and 181 mAh/g for the Ti41Zr29Ni28Cu2 alloy, respectively. The Ti41Zr29Ni28Cu2 alloy also showed a better high-rate dischargeabifity and cycling stability. The better electrochemical properties should be ascribed to the high content of Ni, which was beneficial to the electrochemical kinetic properties and made the alloy more resistant to oxidation, as well as to the Laves phase in the Ti41Zr29Ni28Cu2 alloy, which could work as the electro-catalyst and the micro-current collector.

The chain-length dependence of the Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter is introduced into the FH lattice theory for polydisperse polymer-blend systems. The spinodals are calculated for the model polymer blends with different chain lengths and distributions. It is found that all the related variables r(n), r(w), r(z), and chain-length distribution, have effects on the spinodals for polydisperse polymer blends.

A novel wide-bandgap conjugated polymer (PDHFSCHD) consisting of alternating dihexylfluorene and rigidly twisted biphenyl units has been synthesized. The new fluorene-based copolymer composed of rigid twisting segments in the main-chain exhibits an optical bandgap of as high as 3.26 eV, and a highly efficient ultraviolet emission with peaks at 368 nm and 386 nm. An electroluminescence device from PDHFSCHD neat film as an active layer shows UV emission which peaks at 395 nm with a turn on voltage below 8 V By optimizing the device conditions, a peak EL quantum efficiency of 0.054% and brightness of 10 cd.m(-2) was obtained. Furthermore, blending a poly(dihexylfluorene) in the PDHFSCHD host gave pure blue emission peaking at 417 nm, and 440 nm without long wavelength emission from aggregated species. Efficient energy transfer from PDHFSCHD to PDHF was demonstrated in these blended systems. Depressed chain-aggregation of PDHF in the PDHFSCHD host can correspond to pure blue emission behaviors.

The measurements of VUV-UV photoluminescence emission (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of rare earth ions activated strontium orthophosphate [Sr-3(PO4)(2):RE, RE = Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb] are performed. Whenever the samples are excited by VUV or UV light, the typical emission of Ce-3+,Ce- Sm3+, Eu3+, Eu2+ and Tb3+ ions can be observed in PL spectra, respectively. The charge transfer bands (CTBs) of Sm3+ and Eu3+ are found, respectively, peaking at 206 and 230nm. The absorption bands peaking in the region of 150-160 nm are assigned to the host lattice sensitization bands, i.e., the band-to-band transitions of PO43- grouping in Sr-3(PO4)(2). It is speculated that the first f-d transitions of Sm3+ (Eu3+), and the CTB of Tb3+ are, respectively, located around 165 (14 3) and 167 urn by means of VUV-UV PLE spectra and relational empirical formula, these f-d transitions or CT bands are included in the bands with the maxima at 150-160 nm, respectively. The valence change of europium from trivalent to divalent in strontium orthophosphate prepared in air is observe by VUV-UV PL and PLE spectra.

In situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) and an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) have been employed to follow the adsorption/desorption processes of phenanthraquinone (PQ sat. in 0.1 mol l(-1) HClO4, solution) accompanied with an electrochemical redox reaction on the Au electrode. The result shows that: (1) the reduced form PQH(2) adsorbed at the Au electrode and the desorption occurred when PQH(2) was oxidized to PQ; (2) the adsorption process initiates at steps or kinks which provide high active sites on the electrode surface for adsorption, and as the potential shifts to negative, a multilayer of PQH(2) may be formed at the Au electrode; (3) the reduced PQH(2) adsorbed preferentially in the area where the tip had been scanned continually; this result suggests that the tip induction may accelerate the adsorption of PQH(2) on the Au(111) electrode. Two kinds of possible reason have been discussed; (4) high resolution STM images show the strong substrate lattice information and the weak monolayer adsorbate lattice information simultaneously. The PQH(2) molecules pack into a not perfectly ordered condensed physisorbed layer at potentials of 0.1 and 0.2 V with an average lattice constant a = 11.5 +/- 0.4 Angstrom, b = 11.5 +/- 0.4 Angstrom, and gamma = 120 +/- 2 degrees; the molecular lattice is rotated with respect to the substrate lattice by about 23 +/- 2 degrees. A new kind of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed in aqueous solution through the pre-formed inclusion complexes (abbreviated CD . C-n) between alpha-, beta-cyclodextrins (CDs) and alkanethiols (CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH, n = 10, 14 and 18) was prepared successfully on gold electrodes. High-resolution H-1 NMR was used to confirm the formation of CD . C-n. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to characterize the resulting SAMs (denoted as M-CD . Cn). It was found that M-CD . Cn were more stable against repeated potential cycling in 0.5 M H2SO4 than SAMs of CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH (denoted as M-Cn), with a relative sequence of Mbeta-CD . Cn > Malpha-CD . Cn > M-Cn. In addition, an order of blocking the electron transfer between gold electrodes and redox couples (both Fe(CN)(6)(3-) and Ru(NH3)(6)(3+)) in solution, M-CD . C10 > M-CD . C14 > M-CD . C18, was observed. A plausible explanation is provided to elucidate some of the observations. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
