Discarge compilation from The Global River Discharge (RivDIS) Project

The Global River Discharge (RivDIS) data set contains monthly discharge measurements for 1018 stations located throughout the world. The period of record varies widely from station to station, with a mean of 21.5 years. These data were digitized from published UNESCO archives by Charles Voromarty, Balaze Fekete, and B.A. Tucker of the Complex Systems Research Center (CSRC) at the University of New Hampshire. River discharge is typically measured through the use of a rating curve that relates local water level height to discharge. This rating curve is used to estimate discharge from the observed water level. The rating curves are periodically rechecked and recalibrated through on-site measurement of discharge and river stage.

Physical oceanography measurements at the Håkon Mosby mud volcano (LOOME)

The deployment of LOOME was performed by lowering the LOOME frame by winch, followed by positioning of the surface sensors across the most active site by ROV. The frame was placed on an inactive slab of hydrates, eastwards and adjacent to the hot spot. As part of the LOOME-frame Sun & Sea multi parameter probe CTD 60M was deployed approximately 3 m above the seafloor. The device was rated to 2000 m water depth. As energy supply a DeepSea Power & Light SeaBattery (12V) was used, which allows a run time of the CTD 60M of more than a year. The memory capacity of the probe is sufficient to allow data storage for more than a year as well, applying a time resolution of better than one measurement per minute. The probe was configured to start running when the energy supply is connected and a magnetic switch is closed. An LED on top of CTD is indicating the current state of the probe. The major aim was to record the temperature and pressure regime in the bottom water at the Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano.

Development and institutionalization of communitarian thought in Thailand

In Thailand, communitarian ideas have been widely accepted and even institutionalized as a principle of national development plans and the Constitution of Thailand. This paper examines how and why the communitarian body of thought, described as "community culture thought," and originally created and shared within a small circle of social activists and academics in the early 1980s, came to be disseminated and authorized in Thai society. Contributors and participants, ways of expression, and avenues for disseminating this paradigm are the main topics in this paper. The paper reveals that these thoughts and concepts have been diversified and used as guiding principles by state elites, anti-state activists, and social reformists since the late 1980s. These people with such different political ideologies were connected through some key individuals. These critical connections networked them onto the same side for promoting communitarian thought in Thailand. When such leading advocates assumed key political positions, it was easy for them to push communitarian ideas into the guidelines and principles of state administration.

Balanced branching in transcription termination

The theory of stochastic transcription termination based on free-energy competition [von Hippel, P. H. & Yager, T. D. (1992) Science 255, 809–812 and von Hippel, P. H. & Yager, T. D. (1991) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 88, 2307–2311] requires two or more reaction rates to be delicately balanced over a wide range of physical conditions. A large body of work on glasses and large molecules suggests that this balancing should be impossible in such a large system in the absence of a new organizing principle of matter. We review the experimental literature of termination and find no evidence for such a principle, but do find many troubling inconsistencies, most notably, anomalous memory effects. These effects suggest that termination has a deterministic component and may conceivably not be stochastic at all. We find that a key experiment by Wilson and von Hippel [Wilson, K. S. & von Hippel, P. H. (1994) J. Mol. Biol. 244, 36–51] thought to demonstrate stochastic termination was an incorrectly analyzed regulatory effect of Mg2+ binding.

(Table T1) Gas hydrate fabric and dipping angles of ODP Leg 204 sediments

The sediments of Hydrate Ridge/Cascadia margin contain extensive amounts of gas hydrate. A total of 57 sediment samples including gas hydrate were preserved in liquid nitrogen and have been imaged using computerized tomography to visualize hydrate distribution and shape. The analysis gives evidence that gas hydrate in vein and veinlet structures is the predominant shape in the deeper gas hydrate stability zone with dipping angles from 30° to 90°(vertical).
