6-[omega-arylalkenyl]-5,6-dihydro-alpha-pyrones from Cryptocarya moschata (Lauraceae)

Eleven 6-[omega-arylalkenyl]-5,6-dihydro-alpha-pyrones, cryptomoscatones D2, E1, E2, E3 and F1 and cryptopyranmoscatones A1, A2, A3, B1, B2 and B4, in addition to goniothalamin and cryptofolione, were isolated from branch and stem bark of Cryotocarya moschata, Lauraceae. Synthesis and structural studies of (3,5-dinitrobenzoate)bis(triphenylphosphine)copper(I)

The compound (3,5-dinitrobenzoate)bis(triphenylphosphine)copper(I) was synthesized and studied by IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. It is monomeric with the carboxylato acting as a monodentate ligand. The copper atom shows a trigonal planar coordination geometry. © 1993.

2,3,4,6-Tetra-O-(3-nitropropanoyl)-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, a new antimicrobial from the roots of Heteropteris aphrodisiaca

A new 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-(3-nitropropanoyl)-O-β-D-glucopyranoside anomer was isolated from the roots of Heteropteris aphrodisiaca and characterized by spectroscopic methods. Activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, and C. tropicalis was demonstrated.

Structural control of photoluminescence of four poly(urethane-urea-co-1,3,5-triazine)s: Synthesis and characterization

A series of segmented poly(urethane-urea)s containing 1,3,5 triazine in the hard block and hexamethylene spacers in the soft block was prepared. The hard to soft segment ratio was varied systematically, to afford a series of polymers in which the chromophore concentration varied from 4.2% to 18.1%. Although triazine emission is located in the UV region, the films with higher content of the chromophore emitted a visible blue light (425 nm) when excited at the very red-edge of the absorption band. The photophysical properties of the materials were strongly dependent on the relative amount of triazine moieties along the main chain. Isolated moieties emit in copolymers with small amount of triazine groups, indicating that even though in solid state, these moieties tend to be apart. Two photophysical consequences were observed when the amount of triazine increases: there is some energy transfer process involving isolated moieties with consequent decrease of the lifetime and an additional red-edge emission attributed to aggregated lumophores. The mono-exponential decay observed for the isolated form is substituted by a bi-exponential decay of the aggregated species. The materials were not strong emitters, but since the N-containing triazine moieties are good electron transport groups, the polymers have potential application as electron transport enhancers in various applications. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Treinamento esfncteriano anal: Estudo transversal em crianças de 3 a 6 anos de idade

Objective: To assess the practice of children's toilet training through interviews with parents and caretakers. Methods: A cross-sectional study of healthy children using a questionnaire applied to parents or caretakers of 100 consecutive children aged 3 to 6 years old. Results: 97% of the children were home-trained by their mothers and 92% of them used their intuition, previous experience with an older child and grandmothers' experience. Bowel and bladder toilet training started simultaneously in 84% of the cases, whereas 41% of the children mastered stool control earlier. Mothers with lower educational level and of social classes C, D and E initiated the training earlier and one of the related reasons was the cost of disposable diapers. Age in initiation or duration of toilet training was similar for boys and girls. Children presented most of the readiness symptoms for toilet training and only a small number of them used a seat reducer or a foot support. There was no increase in constipation prevalence after toilet training and there was no encopresis. Conclusions: Mothers were responsible for bowel toilet training and initiated it with no specialized help. In C-D-E social classes, the cost of diapers was determinant to initiate bowel toilet training.

Synthesis, crystal structure and photoluminescence of a binuclear complex of europium(III) containing 3,5-dicarboxypyrazolate and succinate

The new europium binuclear complex [Eu2(dcpz) 2(suc)(H2O)8]·(H2O) 1.5 (dcpz = 3,5-dicarboxypyrazolate and suc = succinate) has been synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The binuclear complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1̄ and consists of two lanthanide ions linked by two different bridging organic ligands. 3D supramolecular framework is constructed by hydrogen bonds. The compound shows strong red emission under UV excitation at room temperature associated to IL transitions indicating a ligand to metal energy transfer mechanism since the triplet energy level lies higher than that of europium 5D0 level. Magnetic susceptibility studies showed weak temperature dependence characteristic of the Van Vleck paramagnetism. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Synthesis, cytotoxic activity and DNA interaction of Pd(II) complexes bearing N′-methyl-3,5-dimethyl-1-thiocarbamoylpyrazole

A new series of complexes of general formulae [PdX2(tmdmPz)] {X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3), SCN (4); tmdmPz = N′-methyl-3,5-dimethyl-1- thiocarbamoylpyrazole} have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivities, IR, 1H and 13C{ 1H} NMR spectroscopy. In these complexes, the tmdmPz coordinates to Pd(II) center as a neutral N,S-chelating ligand. The geometries of the complexes have been optimized with the DFT method. Cytotoxicity evaluation against LM3 (mammary adenocarcinoma) and LP07 (lung adenocarcinoma) cell lines indicated that complexes 1-4 were more active than cisplatin. The binding of the complexes with a purine base (guanosine) was investigated by 1H NMR and mass spectrometry, showing that the coordination of guanosine occurs through N7. Electrophoretic DNA migration studies showed that all of them modify the DNA tertiary structure. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
